Austin Westlake won the weather-shortened Aggie Cup Invitational at Miramount Country Club on Monday.
The Chaparrals, who finished eighth at the Class 6A state tournament, shot 15-under for 27 holes, besting host A&M Consolidated by 23 strokes. Highland Park, which was fourth in 6A last year, was a shot back of Consol at 9-over-par. Houston Memorial, which was third in 6A last year, and Montgomery Lake Creek tied for fourth at 15-under.
The Woodlands (19-over), Southlake Carroll (26-over) and A&M Consolidated’s second squad (113-over) rounded out the field. The Woodlands was the state runner-up last year in 6A to Lake Travis and Southlake Carroll was 10th.
Austin Westlake senior Adam Villanueva grabbed medalist honors. He shot 5-under 67 on the first round and was 4-under on the second round, which was shortened to nine holes. Villanueva, who has signed with the University of Texas, was the medalist at the 2023 Class 6A state tournament, shooting 12-under to lead Westlake to its sixth straight title. Houston Memorial sophomore Grant DeLorenzo and Westlake freshman Henry Talarico tied for second at 7-under. Talarico matched Villanueva’s opening 67, while Delorenzo’s 5-under on the final nine holes was the field’s best score. Austin junior Sterling Hurd was fourth at 6-under. A&M Consolidated senior Raines Watson, who signed with Rice, and Highland Park senior Brooks Simmons, another UT signee, tied for fifth at even par.
Other Consol scores were freshman Ryan Lee 1-over, tied for eighth; sophomore Jackson Black 2-over, tied for 10th; senior Giacomo Iero 7-over, tied for 24th; sophomore Eli Moffitt 12-over, tied for 28th; senior Tucker Stapp 22-over, 35th; junior Jaxon Neely 30-over, 37th; junior James Oben 33-over, 38th; senior Owen Solether 38-over, 39th; and junior Will Bondurant 43-over, 40th.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Jan. 20-21.
