High school scoreboard: Western Branch wins Class 6 Region A softball championship

Baseball

Class 6 Region A championship

No. 6 Glen Allen 1, No. 5 Deep Run 0

The Jaguars won the Class 6 Region A championship in a shutout of the Wildcats. Jake Bratton pitched a complete game for the Jaguars and scored on a Caleb Whitehead RBI double in the fifth inning.

Class 4 Region A championship

Gloucester 13, Hampton 4

WP: Trevor Richardson

The Dukes collected 16 hits at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton on their way to back-to-back region championships.

Class 3 Region A championship

No. 2 Grafton at No. 1 New Kent, Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Class 2 Region A championship

No. 5 Poquoson 4, No. 2 King William 2, 10 innings

Tyler Martin’s single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Lucas Power and Eli Monroe to win the title for the Islanders, who scored two runs in the first inning and two in the final frame.

Power singled and later scored on an error in the first, and Monroe came home on Dan Sperling’s single.

Because of impending weather, the Islanders’ state quarterfinal at home against Strasburg was moved up to 5 p.m. Monday.

Softball

Class 6 Region A championship

No. 1 Western Branch 2, No. 3 Glen Allen 0

Haylee Bandura pitched a complete game, striking out nine over seven innings, as the top-seeded Bruins won their 12th consecutive game to claim  the region title on their home field Thursday.

Bandura walked one and permitted six hits, while Maddie Lemasters finished with three hits and an RBI and Kaileigh Taylor added a hit and drove in a run. The Bruins (15-2) scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Class 5 Region B championship

No. 2 Kecoughtan 4, No. 1 Granby 3

Class 4 Region A championship

No. 1 Gloucester 3, No. 2 Warhill 0

Class 3 Region A championship

No. 1 New Kent 11, No. 2 York 1

The Trojans earned a home game in the state quarterfinals and forced the Falcons to travel. Hannah Tober doubled, homered and drove in three runs. Kendall White and Libby Britt both doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Mariah Leonard was 2 for 3 and scored four runs.

Class 2 Region A championship

No. 1 King William 9, No. 3 Lunenburg Central 5

The Cavaliers outplayed the Chargers to earn a first-round home game in the state tournament.

Boys soccer

Class 6 Region A championship

No. 1 Cosby 2, No. 7 Deep Run 0

The top-seeded Titans became repeat Class 6 Region A champions with a shutout of the No. 7 Wildcats. Cosby scored once in each half.

Class 5 Region A championship

No. 1 Kellam 2, No. 3 Hickory 0

Class 4 Region A championship

No. 2 Jamestown 1, No. 4 Smithfield 0

The Eagles secured the region championship after James Snead scored with an assist by Jason Franzone. Jamestown next plays in the Class 4 state quarterfinals at home Tuesday against the loser of the Class 4 Region B final between No. 5 Monacan and No. 7 Spotsylvania. Smithfield will travel to play the victor.

Class 3 Region A championship

No. 1 Hopewell 2, No. 6 Tabb 1

The Blue Devils defeated the Tigers to win their first region championship. Orrin Besley scored first and Jeremiah Mackin recorded the game-winning goal for homestanding Hopewell.

Class 2 Region A championship

No. 4 Nandua at No. 2 Bruton

Girls soccer

Class 6 Region A championship

No. 3 Deep Run 7, No. 2 Western Branch 0

The Wildcats blanked the Bruins to secure the region title as Sophia Calisto and Tori Gauch scored twice apiece. The Wildcats (18-1) have outscored foes 94-3 this season and have won four straight region titles.

Class 5 Region A championship

No. 1 Kellam 3, No. 2 Ocean Lakes 0

Class 4 Region A championship

No. 1 Jamestown 1, No. 3 Warhill 0

The Eagles scored in the first half and shut out the Lions.

Boys tennis

Class 2 state quarterfinal

Woodstock Central 5, Poquoson 1

The Region A runner-up Islanders won three first sets but gained their only team point at No. 5 singles. The Region B champion Falcons came from a set down for two victories, eliminating the need for doubles. Central advanced to a Monday match against the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal between Riverheads and defending state champion Bruton.
