  1. After looking at the new classifications, What is your opinion on Bartlett being the only County School in 5A? What will this do for them in football???

I would think that a more likely possibility would be for Bartlett to join a number of the teams that now make up Region 7. Look for Bartlett to join Hardin Co., Jackson Ns, Munford, Dyer Co., and Brighton in a new district.

    Strong possibility.

  2. I expect this year's results to be somewhat similar to last year's. Kingsbury is light years better than Raleigh Egypt was last year, and it is inevitable that many Henry County fans will underestimate their team, I still think that Henry County will handle them. From what I hear of Kingsbury, they're all run and no pass with Gabriel Hunter (who I am assuming will be playing more minutes than earlier in the season). Though I have not seen them play, they sound like a better version of Jackson NorthSide from last year with Hunter being slightly better than Mann. I expect Hardin to put up a respectable fight, much like Kingsbury, but ultimately fall to Fairley or East. Note: I know absolutely nothing about East. The interesting matchup, should it occurr, would be if Melrose and Liberty met up, with two big-play offenses with athletes everywhere. However, I'd be surprised if Liberty could out-athlete Melrose. After seeing Brighton firsthand, the loss of their starting quarterback was their ultimate undoing. I do not see Brighton beating Liberty for the second seed in 7-4A. Ultimately, everything does hinge on the East-Melrose game. Love to get some Memphis guy's opinions on that game coming up in a couple of weeks.

Melrose will handle East and will therefore finish 2nd with Fairley being the #l seed. East will be 3 with Kingsbury being the last to qualify in 4th. Kingsbury will make the trip to Paris with Gabriel Hunter and will give the fans in Paris a look at a truly outstanding back. (committed to Ole Miss). He is an outstanding player however as good as he is, Henry should be able to outscore the Falcons. I believe from what I've heard and seen, Region 8 will win the other three. Fairley, East and Melrose should best Region 7's Liberty, Brighton, and Hardin. The fans in Orange Mound are eagerly awaiting another matchup between the golden wildcats and Henry. Hopefully this will transpire and Memphians will be treated to a great game. As for first round action. look for Liberty to beat Brighton and then Brighton will be matched with Melrose. This should be no contest as the speed of Melrose will make this easier than one would think. Hardin can not nor will not hang with Fairley. East is the X factor but has several outstanding athletes. I'm going to give the edge to East here. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Just an early opinion. -

  3. Helmet to Helmet on the QB after releasing the Ball. Not so much late as the H to H hit.

Absolutely correct. (Leading with the helmet to the head). Not only illegal but highly dangerous for both youngsters!

  4. You are probably one of these jokers, a NET referee. We tried it this week and the fastest you can snap a ball and legally ground it is 2.1 seconds and then the ref has to signal for the play to stop and clock stop or did you forget that part. It took 3.5 for it all to happen. They can try tpo cover up all they want. Boone. Was robbed but that is part of officiating in NET. They are not partial. It just happened tp be !oone this time.

I would have to respectfully disagree with your assessment with respect to time. 1.3 plus seconds is enough time to snap and spike the ball. Also take into consideration the referee understands the concept and will be quick with the signal to stop the clock. If the ECO does not stop the clock in time, I again repeat the referee can and will adjust the clock to allow an additional play.

  5. Daniel Boone lost a game against Morristown West friday night after West was able to snap and spike the ball with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. The officials stopped the clocked after West got the first down and waited for the chains to be set before starting the clock. West snapped the ball and spiked it and the officials said there was still time remaining. West was able to kick a field goal to put the game into overtime.

Does a TSSAA rule exist that states a ball cannot be snapped and spiked in less than a certain number of seconds?

Not only possible but very probable. Under this scenario, a first down is picked up and the clock is stopped immediately to move the sticks..The offensive team, if they are lined up properly, upon my starting the clock can most certainly snap and spike the ball (incomplete pass) in that period of time. Also, if in the opinion of the ref, the clock did not stop immediately upon the ball hitting the ground with the official's signal, in his judgment, he is allowed to put time back on the clock. Chances are this team we are discussing was well versed in this procedure. Just my two cents worth!

  6. Are you kidding me--Is Henry County really playing this worse-than-mediocre of team, Memphis Treadwell?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    1) Why on earth would Henry County schedule EVER a "joke of a team," such as Treadwell?

    2) Trust me when I tell you--Treadwell probably could not beat yall's Freshman team! No exaggeration. They really ARE just that bad!

    3) Look for the "mercy rule" to kick in, mid-way thru the 2nd quarter, if not sooner. Seriously!

    4) Henry County would be better off benching all its starters by the end of the 1st Qtr, if not sooner. Why risk injury vs such an unqualified/ opponent.

    5) Why, Henry County--Why? Please tell me why!

    6) What is the point/benefit of playing this game? /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

Easy question to answer. The Principal at Treadwell know that football there is a losing proposition, money-wise. I can assure you that Treadwell will lose money over the course of the year. (i.e. ticket sales will not come close to paying expenses necessary to keep the program going), therefore, they will let people like you "buy" the game. The money that you will pay will help them continue on with the program. However, the ones that lose here are the kids...It does your team no good other that posting a W that might be important in a tie-breaker situation. It does absolutely no good for Treadwell considering that they will not be competetive. They will be beat unmercifully (even though you may not try) and will take a physical beating that will affect their kids for weeks to come. Unfortunately, we see a lot of this in Memphis and personally while I understand why these mismatches take place, it is painful to watch and I can't help but feel for kids in this situation (on both sides). Hopefully the kids from Treadwell will come out of your game physically ok and the money they receive will help them continue to fund the program.

  7. Let's take the season One game at a time. The competition will get much better as the season progresses. I have been involved with the Millington program for over 20 years and I have to say that was the worst Munford team that I can ever recall. So, Let's not hang out hat on that victory. There are plenty of postives to take away from the game however.

    1. We were able to play just about our entire roster. There is no substitute for experience.

    2. We escaped the game virtually injury free. (We didn't need to get one of our key contributors hurt in a game that was

    so lopsided.)

    3. Coach Hawkins showed incredible CLASS by not running up the score. If he had wanted to the score could have been 80-0. Coach Randall should have sent him a STEAK Dinner after the game.

    4. Teseaun Holmes touched the ball 4 times and scored 3 TD's. (TD Runs of 4 and 3 and a TD rec of 77 yards).

    5. Mario Harwell scored his first Varsity TD. (13 yd run).

    6. Demetre Jones was a BEAST. 8 tackles (6 for loss). He has to play with that kind of fire all year long.!!

Arlington is next...... Home Opener...... Should be a packed house!!!

Had a late snack with the umpire that worked your ballgame and everything you said was evidently right on target. He said that he had not seen a more complete football team than the one he saw the other night. Offense, Defense and the kicking game were outstanding. He also agreed that coach Hawkins showed a great deal of class by in fact playing his entire squad against a very overmatched Munford team. It's good to know that W. Tenn will have a genuine threat this year to challenge for a state championship. And the thing I liked even better is knowing that we do have some coaches that reflect the traits of character and sportsmanship such as yours did the other night. Congratulations and good luck down the road!

  8. I can't believe that this topic got buried 3 pages deep in just 2 days. Let's get it back to front page news.

I find it hard to believe that you are concerned that there is not much chatter about this matchup! Let's face it...When you talk about the M and M bowl, It's been all Millington! When was the last time Munford won? Can't remember...Me either! Why not just call it the M bowl! On a serious note, this should be no contest. Millington is loaded from top to bottom and Munford struggled to beat a Northside team that has now lost 31 in a row. I see this all Millington but hope I am wrong.

  9. I hear from inside the Munford camp they are struggling with several areas and losing the Purty kid is a tough loss for them. I think losing Coach Settler on the offensive line is going to be tough to overcome. It should be an opportunity for Millington to play alot of their younger players in the first game to see how they have progressed through camp. I wonder if Munford will be able to win this friday against Northside? Northside has had some good talent the last couple seasons but no depth has killed them as the game progressed and they get tired and Munford has pulled away. If Munford get that win it will sure help their intensity when the millington games arrives. if they lose to northside then the millington game could be ugly early.

Pretty solid observation. Understand the Cougars lost another one in the Jamboree at Covington...Understand it was one of the bigger linemen. With the rash of injuries they've already incurred and the loss of the back that was forced to move, the coaching staff up there will face a difficult challenge not only with the Trojans, but with their entire schedule. It'll be interesting to see just how the younger players will respond. As for next Friday, this weekend against NS will tell a great deal as to what you might expect.

  10. Who is Deondre Purdy?

Problems abound for the Cougars. Whether the coaching staff can overcome them is something we'll have to wait and see. The Purty kid transferred due to the death of his guardian and has moved to Knoxville to be with the only family he has left. Big hit for the already thin Cougars. Millington has another fine football team that very well could make a deep run in the playoffs. One has to think that if Munford were to pull this out, it would have to be considered an "upset of dynamic proportions." But...you know, somebody goes down every Friday, Saturday and Sunday that wasn't supposed to. Should either be over soon, or if not, could get interesting.

  11. The transfer that Henry County got came from out of state; not from down the road. And I am willing to bet that he will not move back to where he came from as soon as the season is over. Speaking about Munford; why is it that they don't turn in their information to Murphy Fair for the magazine? How tough is that to do? Or is it that they are smarter than all of those dumb coaches who cooperate? They don't swap films with other coaches and they don't even cooperate with Murphy Fair. What's the problem over in Munford? Are those teams who choose to cooperate with other teams (film swapping) and cooperate with Murphy Fair, just plain stupid? Those are the reasons for the Munford comments. I simply do not understand the lack of cooperation. What is the purpose for this lack of cooperation? You tell me, or better yet, refer the question to wtnoff or cougarmike. They have never been able to adequately explain the reasoning. I coached elsewhere for over 30 years and I can tell you that the Munford way, is not the norm. If they have a great reason for such blatant non-cooperation, then share it with the rest of the state. Enlighten us please. You did not mention Northside. What are your thoughts about their team? I expect Munford to contend for a playoff spot, but Brighten is a mystery, as you say. I also extend good luck to all teams in the region and definitely hope for no injuries to anyone who plays this great game.

Alright...The Warrior is back! It is good to see you and your antagonistic way back on the board! I can't answer anything about Northside, but I can tell you a little about Brighton. I had an opportunity to see them and they are much improved. They were throwing the ball all over the place with some very good skill guys. Good schemes and crisp routes with a better than average QB. Liberty has some fine looking athletes. Coach Helton in Memphis told me that they have 7 legitimate prospects. Wonder how they will fit into the scheme of things? I'm not in a position to comment on other region teams. Simply don't have the opportunity to see them. Our MIAA Jamboree is in progress now. Last night several teams played with no one standing out. Tonight will be much better with W.Station, Whitehaven, Fairley, and Melrose playing. Will be interesting to see who looks good out of the city. From all accounts this should be a "banner year" for Henry County. What is the word on your other region teams? I do have a word on your favorite team, Munford, however any comments about the goings on there would be immediately viewed upon as whining. They have some problems that I'm not sure they will be able to overcome. Only time will tell if they can. I do have some knowledge about the coach there. He's solid and will definitely bring order to the program. How quickly improvement will come is anyone's guess. I guess football is finally here since you are back with your condemnations and rapier wit about any and all things. Look forward to reading your comments as the year unfolds!

  12. VG I fell just like you. The only reason I made the point was that WNTOFF stated that white coaches could not get hired in Memphis. If a coach is good he is good, no matter what color.

I assure you that this is the last I'll mention on this subject. Reading in the paper today, I found these facts to be interesting...1. Weedon received his last evaluation a week before he was fired. (l0 areas of evaluation found seven to be the highest possible, with the remaining 3 areas satisfactory) Overall evaluation was tagged as "commendable". 2. He has been asked to remain on the job until late Sept. in order to set up stadium schedules, finish the insurance programs, etc. (Obvious request since the new AD has had absolutely NO EXPERIENCE in this area. 3. The board policy states that "All employment decisions are based on job experience (10 yrs as opposed to 0), qualifications (obviously has been deemed to be qualified) and finally performance (Evaluations speak for themselves, and one might note that in the 10 years in which he has served, there is not one negative or derogatory notation in his file!) The last observation that stands out is that he is white! Now...Say what you like, these are the facts...Kinda stands out as to this situation doesn't it? This subject is closed in my book. What another travesty of justice by people that feel they are "teflon coated." *****One last note after reading this morning's paper...It turned out that Cash had not seen Weedon's evaluation(s) when he decided to terminate him. Doesn't it seem only logical that before making such a decision that Cash would have gathered all the information available to him from Weedon's 10 year tenure to gain the most insight so as to be able to make the most intelligent and informed decision as to the man's job status. NO...He didn't do that! What does that say? It screams like a voice crying in the wilderness as to the bias and blatant racism that exists within the system. I'm done!

  13. WTNOFF I can read between the lines from this post and your others what you are attempting to say. I hope you do not officate at any all black schools.

Gee whiz, what don't you understand. Millington is loaded. If they run the football, they should be dominant!! Throwing the football at inappropriate times cost them last year. Simple enough. Melrose has very good athletes and their coaching staff does a very good job. They have an excellent opportunity. I think Mitchell has very good athletes also but, I think they get outcoached in what turns out to be big, pivotal games. That's my opinion. Two of the three have a chance. As far as your comment about me officiating games involving all black schools (and that's is almost all of the city schools), I've been doing this for a lot of years and my rating sheet is one of the best! (FYI the rating sheet scores are submitted by the coaches themselves). As I've said earlier, one's character and integrity is perhaps the most important thing an individual can posses. I try and not mess it up!!

  14. Rogers makes more at MUS as an asst than he ever would as a head coach at a public school. Dont see him leaving.

As far as the Southwind coach...he may have a good coaching track record but he better be a little more careful thus year. Last year, he had four kids go to the emergency room for severe dehydration because he only allowed one 2 minute water break for over a 2 hour practice in 95 plus degree temps. Every other coach across the county was happy to hear that they had to start practicing post 6 pm because he could not give water breaks!

I can assure you that Rogers wouldn't be carried off the field in a playoff game by the police because he couldn't control himself in a "killing" by W.Sta. To compound matters the game was televised as the "Game of the Week". I 've know Rogers for a while and he conducts himself as a gentleman. I can think of no reason why he would not be an outstanding coach.

  15. Yeah, I'm really torn up about Wayne Weedon.

Can we please get back to football!

Maybe someone will walk into your office one day and tell you to "get out" with no explanation. Should that happen, and I hope it won't, how do you think you would feel? I'm ready for football too. I have 2 big scrimmages to handle before the Jamboree. I'm interested in how your region will shake down in your opinion.

  16. Well, it's very good that you clarify that for me. I cannot say that I support your argument, though, in very many ways, at least from a philosophical point of view. Perhaps you'll argue that the "real world" is different.

Our team's "half-dozen" supporters actually provide more than 85% of the money that funds the sports that I coach. In the school systems that surround me, those supporters often provide 100% of the money that funds those sports, including uniforms, supplies, transportation, entry fees, and other money associated with an athletic budget. (I am thinking specifically of several top-of-the-line programs with dozens of kids on the team.) I'm not opposed to to that, since we have loads more freedom to do exactly what we want to do in terms of travel and competitions than we would if I had to argue for every dime we spent. But let's be clear that football does not always fund us "minor" sports.

Athletic departments are not providing these sports with all of the money you suggest, at least not in this area. Individual boosters clubs are--and I'm not talking about those boosters associated with football. Most of us see very, very little money with any relation whatsoever to football or any other sport. I wouldn't mind having it--more money is always better! But it has not happened during my tenure as a coach.

Neither is the difference "night and day" if you are at a good school. At a good school the coaching staff is expected to do more than just coach--period.

I agree with you..He is expected to do more than coach..he is expected to WIN! See what happens if he doesn't yet excells in the classroom. That's why there is a TSSAA BULLETIN BOARD with dozens of jobs open each DEC. and JAN.

I see that this thread has gone astray. I rarely post on football threads, although they are always more interesting than everything else other than girls' soccer, but I had to in this case because of the argument above re: coaches, teaching, and (later) athletic budgets.

You are perfectly correct...I'm talking the REALWORLD here!!!!

  18. The simple fact that only Melrose and Germantown are the only two teams from West Tn that have made it to the BIG DANCE in the last 10 years that I know of and only ONE of them got it done and actually won a gold ball. As heavily populated as that area is surely some team should have made it more than that because the atheletes ARE there.

Is it the fault of the AD of the area or what? Is he the one that is picking the Coaches? If not then who exactly is picking them? All I know is the fact some teams from the Memphis area should be making the trip to Murfreesboro more often than is happening. The fact they are NOT is telling me something is wrong there.

Ridgeway went and won..East won in 99, lost in finals in 00, Mitchell has been, Melrose several times. You need to understand that there are I think 27 city teams, 7 county teams, and too many private schools to mention. Talent truly prevails in Memphis, however, remember that talent is spread out. Also, you'll find if you look at Murphy's book in the coaching records, you'll be hard pressed to find many that appear above .500. That should tell you a little something. As previous posters have said..There have been numerous coaches highly qualified for positions only to be told they were of the wrong color. Coaching supplements in Memphis are extremely low (ex. asst. coach with less than 5 yrs experience will receive only about a thousand dollars). This certainly is a negative factor for someone considering coaching in the MCS.

As for the duties of the city athletic director, he sets up schedules (stadium schedules) for the city team, including middle, jr. high, B team, and varsity programs. He coordinates the same for all other sports. He is responsible for the stadiums and playing field conditions for all sports. He handles local rules meetings in coordination with tssaa rules. He works in part with the Medical and Insurance programs for the city schools and local athletes. He is responsible for writing and applying for grants. (weight equipment). He is responsible for purchasing equipment needed for various athletic events (ex. vaulting pads, jumping bars, etc. for track). He is also responsible for double checking eligibility for each athlete submitted for each school. He coordinates all championship events in the city. He is responsible for providing and maintaing security at all athletic events. And if these things weren't enough, he is supposed to do it with a very limited budget.

Weedon may not have been the most popular person in the world, but I will give him this....Stadium and playing fields were vastly improved under his direction, athletic events were well run and supervised, and I know that he made vast improvements in the insurance programs as well as updating equipment. To compare him to his predecessor is like comparing BMWs to Volkswagons. Too bad he was too pale for the job!!!! Hopefully he'll stand up and say ENOUGH!!!!

  19. This year will not be status quo. Can't speak for any other teams, but East talent is coming back up. There were a lot of young guys playing. The seniors were the let downs. They get the big running back back from knee injury. The QB was a first year starter that got very little protection last year (Looks like they corrected it this spring). East has a new $10K + weight room that the players have been in since the season was over. They have doubled their coaching staff. I don't know how this year will go, but their future is bright. You will see a difference this year. Melrose will have trouble beating Fairley. I would not be so quick to hand it to Melrose. Kingsbury depends on their line and how well they can pass and defend. East will come down to its defense. I would not be so quick to dismiss East. They were not that talented last year and were physically weak and undisciplined. All of those issues have been addressed. Only time will tell wtnoff. I can't wait.

I know you support your team but let's face facts. You aren't gonna beat Melrose...period! You aren't gonna beat Fairley!..period. You aren't gonna beat Kingsbury!....period. It again comes down to you and RE. Lose and you're out of the playoffs again! Until you show us different (on the field) you can expect exactly "more of the same." As for NS, they will continue their winless ways under their new coach. As for another snippet, East will not be Pear Cohn in Nashville. I see you losing to Pearl Cohn, Melrose, Fairley, RE. and Kingsbury. You will have to beat NS and win your other 4 non league games to avoid another dismal, losing season. What a pity you've fallen so far so fast!

  20. Your position is exactly right, however the US of A does not exist anymore; as evidenced by the fact that most cases today are decided solely on the merit of race not facts. In Memphis the same perfidious standard applies to hiring and firing.

Sadly, your post has a great deal of merit. Hopefully, those wronged will continue to challenge the powers that be and maybe, just maybe, justice will prevail in some cases. It's going to take someone to "burst the bubble" and once done, if the penalty is high enough ($) some of this will stop! Until the bubble bursts though, you continue to bang on it as you would a pinata.
