  1. By the way. Did your school in NC take advantage to let athletes know about the program?

I can't think of a single player I coached coming to Cedar Ridge for the IB program. I can remember a couple of Cross Country runners who were big in IB, but that was about it. Is it a recruiting tool? Not for athletics, but for the school overall. Seem to remember a lot of band kids there because of IB.

  2. What exactly is an IB program for? If you don't start taking IB classes until the junior year of high school then why do kids go to that school as freshman and not juniors?

Stands for International Baccalaureatte. It is a program that attempts to meet international standards for education and a school can be an IB school and also offer IB courses much like AP courses. While you may not take the classes as a junior, class structure and preparation in lower level classes are designed for those classes. The school I was at in N.C. was an IB school. You can get more information at http://www.ibo.org/

  3. Is it a jamboree or a scrimmage? Haven't known Wartburg to play in preseason jamborees since I played for them back in the eighties.

This started out as a 4 team jamboree back in the spring, but has dropped to only 2 teams now. We have tried to add additional teams as the original participants started dropping out, but we not able to do so. As a result, Taft and Wartburg will play 2 quarters this Friday starting at 7:30 PM (heat index permitting). It will be "game like" conditions with limitations on the kicking game etc. We already have commitments for more teams next year and hope to do this on a bigger scale.

  4. Im getting fired up for football season. Spring will give us enough to get us salivating. When do all of the Morgan County teams negin spring practice? From what I can gather I believe Wartburg is beginning the first week of May. What about the other 3 schools. Any scrimmages?

Wartburg will begin Spring Practice on April 30th. Will end up with a scrimmage here on May 14th. Scrimmage will be with Sequoyah. Looking forward to a good Spring!!

  5. Im eager to see how it all ends up.I know Coach Loftis will bust his tail for his formal high school And where are you head coach at coachshoe

I am starting my second season as head coach at Wartburg. I coached at Fox Middle School with Squirrel and Ronnie for one season back in the day. Good times back then.

  6. If this is true then that's a very nice hire for the Blue Devils. That program needs stability more than anything and I think Coach Loftis will give them just that being a hometown guy. I wish the Blue Devils luck in the upcoming years and maybe we can schedule each other in the near future. I think both programs are on the rise!

I think this is a great hire and wish Sean and the Blue Devils all the luck in the up coming season. Now if he can get some good help, some community support, and a little sweat from the players, he will get it back right.

    Good Luck Sean!!

  7. Recipe for Success:

    1. I think getting a proven head coach to come to JC would be nearly impossible.

    2. Go after a quality assistant coach from a proven program

    3. Does not even have to be a cooridantor, a posistion coach would be fine

    4. Give whoever it is four years minumum to turn things around

    5. Have the arm-chair quarterbacks keep their mouths shut and let the guy do his job

    6. Get the community to support football like they do girls basketball (of course a winning program is easier to support)

Don't know names, but here are some possiblities: Runnings backs coach at Trousdale, any assistant from York or Oneida (both teams have been winning and one of the assistants may be ready for the next level), Clay County OC, Cannon county running backs coach, Special teams coach at Scott.

Good list to pick through and who knows one of them might be interested.

Any word on who the new head coach is???

  8. I got my start at the middle school level. I was a volunteer assistant and when I finally got my first teaching job, I also coached. Find a coach that needs some help, and be willing to work with him. Get to some clinics and find out how other coaches coach. As was already stated, listen more than you talk and be very organized in your drill work and practice time. Keep looking and you will find the right position for you.

    Good Luck

  9. Link to Story

Coach Mark Wattenbarger has been selected as the new head football coach of Stone Memorial High School. He will begin his duties immediately.

Coach Wattenbarger played free safety and tight end at Tennessee Tech from 1987 - 1990 and led the team his senior year in pass receptions. He was named OVC Academic Honor Roll all four years.

Coach Wattenbarger coached at Cumberland County High School from 1997 to 2005. He led the Jets to 3 playoff appearances, with 5 of the 9 seasons having a .500 or better record, including an 8-3 season in 2002 and tying for the region championship in district 4-1. During his tenure he was named regional coach of the year in 1998, Coca-Cola regional coach of the year and was selected to coach the East-West Shriners All Star game held in Murfreesboro.

I knew Coach Wattenbarger from his Harriman days and he is a good selection for this team. If he is allowed to hire a staff and get the community support, there will be good things on the horizon for Stone.

  10. From someone who has played them for four years--yes, I think this is Alcoa's "weakest" team in a while but---They are still very, very good. Their D is very, very fast. We have a good QB with a very good arm--he can't throw the same passess against Alcoa's db's that he can the rest of the year, including BB and Loudon. Offensively, they are not as good as when Cobb and Lanxster (sp?) were there but they still have excellent athletes at TB(best we faced). Sam T at WR is great. Great place to play, fans are generally respectful and fair. Missing the hamburgers and fries though will bad--I save may cholestoral diet for the week when we play there. Don't come intimidated or you will be down fast. They are younger-only 10 seniors I believe so they are loaded up with some very talented "younger" players. Good luck to both but we'll be rooting our Region, so go Tornados

I have seen them for the last 16 years and this is not a weak Alcoa Team. Don't kid yourself there Marion County. I am pulling for you. I played in the Sequatchie Valley Conference back in the day. But this team is unlike any you have seen. Prepare for speed like you have never seen!!! Good Luck Friday. I will be there to root you on. But you had better get ready!!

  11. Loftis and Chaffin both fit this description perfectly. I think the program needs a homegrown coach that plans on making this job his first and last. I think the administration is making a mistake if both of these young men aren't given a shot over any outsider.

Agreed!! Both of these guys are local and I think will do a good job. Get them some help, and support the program and they will be fine.

  12. whoops! I was wrong. Yes they did scrimmage in preseason.

I saw both in the pre-season scrimmage and I feel that this a good match-up. I am unsure how injuries are affecting both or what players have developed since the pre-season at Webb. Any news on either of these two about injury or player development. Should be a great match up.

  13. I don't get on here and write too much. But this is a big event in the history of Morgan County Football. Because of that, I feel that I should post a few thoughts. Coach Kreis was a great coach, a great competitor and someone I considered a friend. He helped me as a young coach and I hate to hear he is hanging it up. He will be missed and I wish him well as he moves into the next phase of his life.

All the other noise on here simply distracts from the honor and accomplishment of the man. Talking about all of that on this thread is inappropriate. Take it off-line or on another thread. This should be for those who want to talk about Coach Kreis and what he has meant to football in Tennessee, Morgan County, Coalfield or them personally.

Good Luck Coach, You will be missed!!

  14. question is can these kids handle his works ethics ,and being pushed to the limit, bill is a good coach and he can get everything out of a player.dont know what type of kids will be there or if any have played but if they have been playing he will do all right in his first year program

I know Coach Price, his work ethic and his record. My brother played for him at Lookout Valley many years ago. He will do well. There is enough $$$ , community support, and new facilities to garner enough interest. 2 years from now, it will be a great program.

    Good Luck Coach Price

  15. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> THis is a little early for speculating, but being from LV and coaching somewhere to the north, I am unsure of the region standing and playoff implecations etc. Where possibly will the Jackets go for the playoffs. I was there at Coalfield and Sunbright in the past and would love to travel again. Sounds as though this is a banner year!!!

    Go Jackets!!

  16. Medicine Man speaks the most sense I have heard in a while. Thank you for adding a little perspective to this thread. Great comments and thanks for adding "positive" material to this discussion.

As for Stack, if you have no interest, why are you posting on the Wartburg Thread???? This Thread was started by Lil Hoot in order to try to get some "local" discussion. 5 of the last 10 post have been from you all up North. Free country and a free discussion board, but If you have no interest, why are you all always posting???? If you have no interest, go back to your own thread.

Remember, bring your money and visit the concession stand often. It will be brand new you and you all will get to break it in.

Usually lurk and don't say much, but this this is getting on the verge of foolish.

Now this is really productive isn't it. This thread was started to talk Bulldog football and we are now to the point of " Bring money to the concession stand"

As for Barnes, he will be at RB and used on the edge to catch the ball I think. Getting him the ball on the edge with a pass is as good as running the sweep.

I don't mind seeing folks talk, speculate and even ask questions that can answered without giving too much away. But to promote the new concession stand kind of misses the point don't you think!!! Lets talk football.

  17. QUOTE(knockknock @ May 9 2007 - 11:46 AM) 826455382[/snapback]They say Coach Shoemaker is running practice until another coach is named. The new coach will be selected this week. He was out there with three or four other coaches. Practice was intense.

I have been running the spring practice until a new coach is in place. We have had some good work this Spring and the kids and coaches are working hard. Will be glad when we get our spring sports folks get out there with us. Kids are really eager for the new coach to be named.
