  1. Hes not a saint cause he's Protestant, but do you know how rare it is for a high school football coach in TN to be ejected from a game? I know of 2 cases in all of my years and they both happened last year. Warrior aren't u an HC guy? Why so defensive or are you Hodge still fighting the HC fight???

I coached for 30 years in Mississippi before retiring to HC so I know about penalties. I don't think a coach should be judged on a couple of penalties and a single ejection. He does need to calm down and I'll bet that he does. What HC fight are you talking about? I thought he did a great job at HC with Gaddis and he also did real good at Dresden. That's why I'm pulling for him.
  2. Passionate and instability are very different! My brother has coached a long time and the program he is with is very successful and passionate but I can assure you there has never been a flag thrown on any of the coaches and an ejection is just embarrassing!

Well your brother must the SAINT of all saints! Good for him!!! Too bad the new super wasn't looking for a saint to hire. As far as your embarrassment....GET OVER IT!
  3. I've just got to address the elephant! If he is soooo good, why didn't Dresden hire him?

Coach Hodge is sometimes too passionate during a game. He lets poor officiating get to him sometimes. He was penalized on several occasions and was ejected once. I love the passion and my bet is that now that he's a head coach that it won't happen again (the penalties and ejection). The players and fans will love him and he WILL win!

  4. I wanted Chad as much as anyone, but can we please move on. He is the coach at McNairy Central now. Coach Rang is our head coach so lets support him and the young men on the team. You can't kick these kids to the curb just because we didn't get the coach we wanted. That's like the little kid that takes his toys and goes home because he didn't get his way. Trust me these kids read everything that is said on here.

I'm sure they do and I'm sure this doesn't surprise or bother them like it seems to bother you. This will pass and the talk on here will be Dresden football as it should be. But at the moment this is big news that the players expect. They love Hodge and are likely happy for him.

  5. He didn't kiss enough arse to get the head job at Dresden. MCNairy did well with this hire. He won't play daddy games and the kids who work will be the ones on the field. Give him a year or two and Adamsville will have their hands full. Are they a 3 or 4A school?

    Great hire for McNairy!

  6. Here is my problem with all this keep supporting our team that everyone keeps saying. First of all go to a QB club meeting and see all the support they get from Dresden and the community. You will see the same 10-12 people that are always there. Less than half of the football player parents even belong to the club. If it wasn't for them our team would've had to drive up at the state championship game in a regular school bus that might or might not have made it there. Look at all the great things going on around the football field. Not possible if we didn't have a ex governor pass away and leave money. Rotary club gets 100% of the concessions and best I can tell haven't purchased anything for the team since the building of the stadium in 1971. Granted they give a small portion back to the athletic fund (after taking it away from the football team cause presidents wife was cheer coach) Next time you drive by the field study the light poles, the electric company refuses to change out lights because the poles are so unsafe. Last time they did they used the bucket truck to support the pole while the guy climbed it.

Walk into the gym and look around, you'll see stat boards for the girls who've scored 1000 points or rebounds. Go into basketball locker rooms, girls have couches and carpet, boys wooden bench and busted up lockers. Check out the weight room, cant believe we've only had one child get mersa from that place. What I'm throwing another tantrum as Hevy says, is Dresden high School is just like Gleason High everything revolves around girls basketball. The admin wont make janitors go clean the weight room or field house but you can bet girls locker room is clean. Dresden has had more state football players in the last five or six years than I can remember. This past year had two all state, six-eight district players, four all west TN players, two in west TN all star game and one that played in KY vs TN all star game. Where is their recognition? Where is the jersey of Hutcherson who was nominated for Mr. Football? Where is the name of Slusher and his four years of college played? Take a look in Gleason's gym at what I like to call the wall of Willy T, look at Union City's gym and the pictures of athletes back to the 20's who played at the next level.

Ok I'm done beating up my little brother and throwing a tantrum. Good luck Coach Rang and Dresden Lions. Hope this years team gets the support they need.

GREAT POST!!  Your post had nothing to do with Hodge or Rang but it's right on the money. There's the problem and it won't get better any time soon. What you speak of is well known in coaching circles.

  7. I don't have a reading comprehension problem at all but I appreciate your concern. Keith Hodge did a heck of a job as a head coach for us and his brother did a great job as a volunteer assistant coach helping him.

It's time for us to move on and support coach Rang and the Lions and that is what the discussion needs to be at this point, so there is no reason for me (or anyone else) to list the reasons here that Chad didn't get the job but all of us have seen with our own eyes (or heard with our own ears) the reasons why Chad did not get the job. If Chad didn't have so many issues while as an assistant then I'm sure he would have been the natural choice to replace his brother but that wasn't the case and I'm not sure how that is the administrations fault.

You are obviously from Henry county so you have a personal tie to Chad and I can understand that, but maybe you need to sit back and think about the fact that he was passed over for the Henry County job, passed over for the Dresden job, and hasn't been hired as a head coach at any other school as a head coach either and realize maybe the people that have done the hiring at Henry County, Weakley County, and the countless other counties that have had open head coaching jobs come open have also not hired Chad. The administration here had no issues giving Keith the head coaching job when it came open and the administration hasn't changed from then to now so the same people smart enough to hire Keith didn't hire Chad. Case closed.

I think it would be best for all involved, since it's over and done with now, for you to go back to supporting and commenting on Henry County threads and let us as Dresden supporters turn our attention to our new leader and to our kids. I think the community will rally around the kids and our new coach and hopefully propel our programs to even greater things!

    Go Lions!!

I wasn't concerned your reading comprehension issues...I just stated that you had them. I'm actually not a Henry County guy although I did retire there about nine years ago. I coached for 30 years mostly in Mississippi. I don't really know Hodge personally but I have many contacts in coaching. He was not passed over for the Henry County job..,he didn't apply. In fact, what other jobs are you saying he was "passed over"? You are as inaccurate as they come.

  8. I have had the honor and pleasure of serving as the Powell High radio play by play guy for the last 14 years and have covered high school football in East Tennesse as a member of both the broadcast and print media for the last 20 years. During the year that Rang was the head coach at Powell, and for the last year while he has been at Carson-Newman, I have had the opportunity to get to know Derek Rang very well.

What you are getting in Derek Rang, first and foremost, is a quality human being who will work hard to better the young men in the program both on the field and off. He's a very bright young guy, he is a tireless worker, and he is as knowlegable a football mind as I have been around. He demands an honest effort from his players both on the field and in the classroom. He trusts his assistants to do their jobs, and will put his players in the best possible position to to be successful.

In his year at Powell he took a team that had lost some 17 starters from the previous team that finished 14-1 and lost a heartbreaking 17-14 game to Henry County in the 2011 Blue Cross Bowl and still got them back to the semi finals in 2012. Derek knows what he is doing.

Rang has 3 state championship rings of his own as a player from his high school career at Maryville and he learned from one of the best high school head coaches in the game in George Quarles. He also played under a great defensive coordinator at Maryville in Jimmy Gaylor. As a defensive coordinator at Knoxville West he helped lead the Rebels to two class 5A semi final appearances before being hired as the head coach at Powell and then making it once again to the 5A semis, and believe me - that was a great coaching job to do that. He's been part of some very successful programs as either the defensive coordinator or head coach thus far in his young career.

It's my opinion that Rang is a great hire by Dresden and he will be very successful there. And from talking with him this evening, he genuinely wants to be at Dresden and feels like it is somewhere he can be for a long time.

Once you folks get an opportunity to meet Derek and get to know him I believe you will understand what a good hire this is for your program.

I'm not a Dresden guy but some friends say the same things about Rang that you've said. I hope he does well.

  9. Derek is a good young mand and a good coach. I have known him for 3/4's of his life. I just hope it works out for him in Dresden. I will come back to Dresden from time to time. Will be there early summer to see how Derek and the players are doing

He may be a great guy and a great coach. I hope he is and I wish him well. He's done nothing wrong. I hope Dresden continues their winning ways.

  10. Don't you think comparing resumes would be a good way to pick a candidate? You ignoring this fact tells me you haven't made many hires in your life.

You keep stating the administration made a mistake as if it is a fact, only time will tell if Coach Rang was the right hire or not. YOUR stubbornness and obvious emotional tie to Coach Hodge won't allow you to admit that, and that's ok as well.

It's time to support Coach Rang as he is now OUR football coach at Dresden. If Coach Hodge is a such a slam dunk head coach hire as you keep implying then I'm sure he will have a head coaching job somewhere else next year. Surely all the other administrations in the state all can't make the same "mistake" and not hire him as well, right?

How many days until Westview week?????

You have a comprehension problem and it's bad. Let me spell it out for you. Hodge was a big reason for the success at Dresden. If you disagree with that then you're a fool. The only type of coach who should've been hired over him would be a legendary coach..,a state championship coach. If Dresden had just come off of a bad few years then Hodge shouldn't have been considered at all. This isn't about Rang. The administration should've hired Hodge because of what he did THERE at Dresden...UNLESS they had a proven winner with championships on his resume.

  11. How do you know what is best for the program or the players? How do you know Hodge was a better choice than Coach Rang? Have you compared their resumes? Chad Hodge helped his brother take our program to new heights and we should be forever grateful for the work he put in but even if you take out the antics of Chad from the equation i'm not sure how on paper you can know for sure Chad is the best option.

I do know that Derek Rang was hired to be the head coach of a 5A school coming off a state championship appearance and when he left became a paid, full time assistant college coach. The same can't be said for Chad....

I don't have to compare their resumes and the fact that you bring that up tells me that you're out of touch. Hodge had his success at Dresden. No other candidate can say that. Rang may do a great job, and I hope he does. The administration made a mistake. Your stubbornness won't allow you to admit that and that's ok. This is not about Rang. It's about an administration that made a mistake...and that doesn't mean that Rang isn't a good coach. I'm sure he's very good.
  12. This disappointment has nothing to do with the kids. The administration didn't do what's best for the program or the players. Good luck to the new coach. He's not at fault either. I hope he does well. The administration has put him in a horrible position. Hodge was the best choice and his support was very strong. It should've been an easy choice. The administration made a mistake. That doesn't mean the new coach isn't good. But this is ridiculous.

  13. I have heard from a very reliable source that a coach has been decided on and that an announcement is coming next week. I know that is vague, but I wasn't given the name of the coach or day. I was just told a coach has been decided on.

I've heard exactly the same thing. I heard this two weeks ago too but they're running out of time so I guess I believe it this time.
  14. I'm hearing we will know tomorrow!!! Honestly this is getting dumber by the second. I've decided that the powers that be are a bunch of idiots!!! Have the testicular fortitude to make a decision and live with it. All your doing is hurting the kids.

I don't blame the whole team, QB club and community if they go to Murray or anywhere else.

I hope your source is better than mine. Mine should be a great one because he is close friends with one of the two who did the interviews. I'm at a loss as to why this is taking so long. Either it isn't going to be Hodge and they're bracing themselves, or it is Hodge and they don't have the good sense to announce it. What makes you think tomorrow?

  15. I've been hearing a little about a east TN coach but no concrete news. I've googled the guy and if they pass chad up for him I'll become a McKenzie Rebel fan next year! lol

Where is he from? I talked to my friend just a few minutes ago and he didn't mention any change to what he had already told me EXCEPT that they seem in no hurry to make the call. I asked why not and he said that the "powers" are intent to do this on their own timeline and weren't concerned with what anyone thought about it. He reiterated that the decision had been made but the announcement may not be as quick as he once thought. I asked him if the job had been offered to someone and his response was "I really don't think so".

  16. Red Warrior, do you have a name to go with that statement???

With a 99% degree of accuracy...YES. But I'm sworn to secrecy. The only way that I know is one of my best friends is best friends with a key person in the selection process. Unless something falls through, it's done. I say 99% rather than 100% because I didn't hear it firsthand....but the guy who told me knows for sure.
