Taken from (Sam Bundy)….really, Whatever happened to COACHES with good sportsmanship?  Karma is a b**** !!

What's your point?  Can you actually address the facts?

    How about:

Greeneville only ran 25 plays the entire game.  That is about 6 plays each quarter.

    2 tds on punt returns

    2 tds on int returns

What exactly would you have done as a coach?  How disrespectful would it have been to start taking a knee on every play after half-time?  Do you fall down and let them walk into the end-zone?  33 players made defensive plays.  That is at least 3rd or 4th team.

Zero problems with the final score of the game,  I take issue with Sam Bundy taking shots at what…. Sullivan East?  Seriously? We need that article written taking shots at the kids and coaches, then covering it up on his twitter and saying “That was directed at the coaches.”  Sure idiot, good thing you printed it and it got passed around for everyone to read. At Sullivan East?  Really?  Who asked for that article to be written? Again, the score was not run up.

only thing I think that should be added is that the running clock should be a anytime thing, not a 2nd half game.  Far too many games are getting out of hand by the 2nd quarter.

I agree with everything that you’ve stated. Bundy is an absolute hack. Classy guys  like former sports editor Wayne Phillips have to be embarrassed by Bundy’s garbage. Totally unprofessional, he occasionally will manage to work his political stances into his articles. Perhaps even more embarrassing was the way that he covered the GHS baseball team while his son played. In every article, you could read about how his son had done in that game. Oftentimes, it would be something along the lines of him hitting a hard line-drive out,  or if he didn’t get a hit, he would manage to report that he successfully handled 3 or 4 grounders. It was like the dreaded little league parent, except he has a sports column.

I appreciate your posting this, but there are still ways you can hold the score down. I was once part of a staff where the QB started taking a knee on every play late in the 3rd qtr. IMO, there should be a “run rule” like in softball or baseball, not just a running clock. When a lead reaches a certain point, say 60 points, you shake hands and go to the house.

I see 2 sides of this. In many ways it’s completely unfair for a guy like Gudger to only get 3 touches in a game, especially when you try to compare players across the state. I see that the Johnson City Press publishes stat leaders throughout the year, and I noticed Jaxon Diamond was the leading passer. If  Quillen had gotten to play more in those blowout games, there’s no doubt that his stats would have been padded.
Having said that, I’m still not sure I understand the use of Quillen. I know this was discussed a long time ago, but Cannon seems to have a much better arm. I know that it was stated that Quillen played because he’s a running threat. Last night, it seemed like there were several opportunities where he could have made big gains if he had run the ball. Throughout the year(and last night on the Tom Taylor pre-game), it was stated that this could be the best group of receivers that Greeneville has ever had. If so, they certainly were underutilized.

Congrats to the Cyclones, made my night, especially after seeing Greenville run the score up earlier in the year on Sullivan East. Hope you win State, very classy program!

I have to comment on this. I feel the same about teams running the score up. When I saw this score, I thought the same as you.  However, after finding out a few facts, I discovered that my initial knee-jerk reaction was wrong.

These is taken from the Sam Bundy(Greeneville Sun) article(not my comments).

    • The Greene Devils gave the ball nine times to Keelen Lester, a guy so far down on a stacked depth chart at running back that he hadn’t touched the ball all season. Lester, a senior playing on senior night, took advantage, gaining 107 yards and scoring two touchdowns. After the game, Lester wasn’t boastful. He was just a kid truly grateful for the opportunities he got. Knowing he’ll probably not get another chance like Friday night, it meant a great deal to him.
    • Despite being a senior on senior night, Greeneville’s star running back Mason Gudger only got to carry the ball three times. Could he help it if he ran for 51 yards and scored twice? The only way the Patriots would have kept that guy from reaching pay dirt is if he hadn’t dressed for the game.
    • Anthony Petersen, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound beast who would be a thousand-yard rusher on most teams in East Tennessee but is also stuck behind Gudger, carried the ball just once. Could he help it if he scored untouched from 18 yards out?
    • Starting quarterback Brady Quillen and backup Corbin Cannon split time and threw just nine passes, including just two after halftime. Could they help it if they completed seven for 178 yards and three TDs?
    • Greeneville ran just 25 offensive plays and rolled up 394 yards, or 16 yards a snap. What were the Greene Devils supposed to do? Gain a couple yards and drop to the turf?
    • Four Greeneville touchdowns came on two punt returns and two interceptions, and the Greene Devils had another punt return for a TD called back on a holding penalty far off the play. What were the Devils supposed to do? Call fair catch? Run out of bounds?
    • Greeneville had 33 players make the defensive stats sheet. That’s three teams deep on the depth chart.
    • Sullivan East ran 57 offensive plays, meaning the Patriots had more than double the chances Greeneville had to score. Yet the Patriots mustered just 71 yards, or a little over a yard a snap, and couldn’t get the goose egg off the scoreboard (except when the scoreboard was malfunctioning). What were the Greene Devils supposed to do? Call down the middle school team from the stands to give the Patriots a shot at the end zone?

    so theres no stream tonight?

What was the story with this?  It was reported that Greeneville would not allow this.  Can someone verify this?  Can't imagine any good reason that they wouldn't allow this game to be streamed.  If so, seems petty.  Unless it has something to do with HUDL.  However, this doesn't stop WCYB from broadcasting from Burley.

  6. Just finished watching the Knox Central game. It was a limited observation, but Cannon appears to be a much better passer than Quillen. He seemed to run pretty well too. Quillen’s arm seems pretty weak based on tonight’s throws, and some decisions were pretty poor. Maybe tonight was an anomaly, but Quillen looked much like he did last year. To beat Elizabethton, they’ll need to mix up the run with a passing attack. Not sure Cannon isn’t a better option at this point.

I'm not even near Greenville but bet the farm greeneville wins at home against Elizabethton. Greeneville by 2 touchdowns. I will also say Greenville is in the state championship game this year.

I don't think Greeneville's regular season game against Elizabethton this year is at home.  Maybe you were predicting a playoff matchup at home.

It may sound amateur but the other guy is also the director of schools for Elizabethton so to ask him to not cheer would be like asking a baby not to cry.

I completely understand that the director of schools would want to clap and cheer for his team.  However, there are stands there for that sole purpose.  You generally like for your color analyst to add something to the broadcast besides sounding like the cheer captain.

Tom was hard to listen to last night. Clapping does not sound good coming thru the phone. My advice call the game and it is fine to raise your voice when a good play happens but no clapping or cheerleading while on air.

I've listened to Tom before, and he wasn't bad.  Last night however, was pretty poor.  The guy that was with him really made it sound very amateurish.  The clapping and hollering was over the top.  I realize that most radio broadcasters have the "homers", but openly cheering sounds pretty silly.

You are correct about a lot of the PA announcers. The TSSAA states the PA is considered part of the field and game, hence should be totally neutral. Only down and distance, plus public announcements. In the 70s, 80’s and 90’s Ray Smith of Greeneville was the Epitome of a true TSSAA PA man. As a young coach about 1980 our squad was playing at Crockett. The PA was screaming draw, screen etc. I cut his wires as I was a spotter on top the press box. No regrets.

That's awesome, and I'm pretty sure the statute of limitations has expired.

Nope still no playclock. As a DB fan i find it crazy too

Any reasoning?  I'm absolutely certain it can't be a money issue.  I thought maybe it was a Graham Clark preference, but if the coaching change didn't bring an on-file play clock, it must be something else.  I'd have to think that it would benefit the players.  Maybe a good question for the new AD Mr. Debusk.

That team from JC does have a nice stadium. Too bad the team, the fans and the entire city doesn't deserve it. Those are the rudest people I have ever seen. Case in point, they put the band beside the DB crowd. How immature was that? a guy in the DB crowd was cheering on the Indians and some 'lady' from JC goes and gets a policeman and says that he was calling her names. We thought for a minute they was going to throw him out of the game. The announcer for JC was just so annoying, Does he work for the school or something?

I agree about the PA announcer, but this is (unfortunately) the same at many schools. Maybe I'm showing my age, but I much prefer they stick to giving information, rather than cheerleading.  I've been to Science Hill, and I could also hear it on the youtube video last night, and it does get old rather quickly(and I'm not a Science Hill fan).  It's almost as back as the rooster crowing at the Cocke County games.  Not sure if they still do it, but the silly cannon at Greeneville games was stupid.  On more than one occasion(depending on the weather), they'd fire that small cannon, and the huge cloud of smoke wouldn't clear for several minutes.  Sometimes it would linger for most of the game.  One that I don't mind is the Cyclone Warning at Elizabethton games.  Perhaps if I went to their games more frequently, I'd get tired of it as well.

On a semi-related note, the last time I was at J.Fred Johnson for a game(a couple years ago), I thought not having a play clock on the field was ridiculous.  They spend a fortune on a fancy video scoreboard, but can't get a playclock located on the field.  Maybe they've added it in the last couple seasons.

Man, I have only been a D-B fan for two years now... I now know why the PA guy at JFJ refuses to acknowledge "the team from Johnson City."

What's the story with the PA guy.  I've never heard this one.

On a side note, I'm not a supporter of either school, but watched the game on youtube while listening to WKPT ESPN radio stream.  It sounded like Steve Wilmoth doing the game,  but whoever it happened to be was one of the worst I've ever heard.  The commentating wasn't bad, but the constant whining about the referees was over the top.

Here’s an interview with Cade.  He’s a humble young man. Glad he’s doing well.

Great interview.  I can't understand why they keep saying he was 30-0 as a starter.  He started 4 years, and the 30-0 mark was his last 2 years only.  They showed this same graphic on the television broadcast during the UTSA game.  However, the statistics were for a 4-yr period.

McCurry would have been extremely successful if he would have stayed at Greeneville. McCurry was doing anything he could to get the program on top with new weights, new football equipment, Jersey's, Etc. but  wasn't the best with talking to administration at central office lol.  When your response to the School board director is "I don't answer to you when private donors are the ones getting us the new equipment" isn't going to rub someone right who has raised their kids in Greene Co their entire life and your the new guy in town lol.  He would have done anything for the program and respected him as a coach because he got in your grill but would fight for you tooth and nail.  He changed the philosophy of being a hammer not a nail as he liked to put it and didn't care who your mom or dad was when it came to playing the best player.  That's why him and Ballard where good with each other because he had total control off the D and he let Ballard have complete control of the offense that Greeneville has ran since 2007.  McCurry went on to Coach in NC and is now an Assistant Principal and AD for AC Reynolds in Asheville, NC the School he came from and had won state championships at in 4a in NC.  His oldest just signed to play at ETSU.

The difference of opinions  was Ballard wanted to move to the Spread instead the I formation and Seller still wanted to call plays even though Ballard was the OC.  We moved to the 2 back spread in 06 and then 07 when Ballard came back it was mostly 1 back spread and sometimes 2 back spread depending on who we played that week.

    Thanks for the insight.

Ballard did take over when the state went to 6 classifications in 2009 and Greeneville decided to play where the TSSAA put them instead of playing.  When McCurry came here in 2007 Greeneville was coming off a 4-6 record and a loss to David Crockett.  McCurry made the administration redo the weight room, implement a weight lifting period, started Devil Camp, Work outs became a way of life and not an option anymore.  The Greene Devils in 2007 went 10-3 getting put out in the Quarter's by Sullivan South and Curt Phillips a team they had beaten in the Regular Season.  Coaches that are still on Greeneville's Staff since that 2007 season are OLine Coach Bentley, Head Coach Spradlen, and OC Baugh.  Ballard had been the OC for Greeneville for a long time before Him and Zeller got into it about Offensive Philosophy.  As a former Greene Devils player (05-07) knew Ballard would be back as OC my Senior Year (07) since he had Promised us my Junior year he would come back and Coach Us.  Do I believe there were some Greeneville teams that could have won a State title if playing in the correct classification over the years? Yes I do instead of having to go through Maryville to to do.  Since McCurry was hired the weight room has been the huge difference compared to the past.  Greeneville has always had athletes but bigger, faster, stronger is always better and that's what Greeneville has done

That's a great post Swipes.  I've always felt that McCurry would have been extremely successful if he had stayed. Unfortunately, we'll never know.  He gets too little credit for the long run of GHS success.

If you don't mind, what was the difference of opinion regarding offensive philosophy?

let's also not forget that coach Mccurry deserves a ton of credit for the "culture" change at greeneville. Ballard continued what McCurry brought. Ballard also coached under quarles at murvull...Spradlen will be just fine here if people will stay off his ars and let him work. ballard lost i beleive 4 games his first year with alot older and more talented team. There's a pretty big learning curve for any first time head coach dont ya think? Eddie will do a great job here, no doubt in my mind

Also, I seem to recall that Ballard took over when GHS changed classifications.  For many years, GHS always played in the largest state classifications.  I seem to recall that GHS was dropping to the correct classification when McCurry left.  Someone can confirm this.  I think that Ballard was a very good coach, but it is impossible to compare him to the other coaches at GHS that "played up".

There has been a lot of football games that have changed because a big play but you have to find a way to win no matter the circumstances.Greeneville is young and the better football team one this game.

I absolutely agree.  If they played 10 times this year, EHS would win 10 times.  As I mentioned, I think GHS is mediocre.  I just wasn't that impressed with EHS.  This is the 3rd time I've watched them, and I thought they looked good against Science Hill, but I thought they looked average against Boone.
