  1. Thank you and congrats on the state titles/ you should be proud... jerilyn Harper played at my old high school and broke the scoring record in the old 6-6 days. She played well in college, even coming out of the archaic high school rules for girls/ thanks again

  2. White long sleeve shirt had small black threads in shoulder seam...those tight rules on uniforms are crazy...The R should have made BC sub for her at start of game, since she was on floor and not legally dressed, but he allowed her to change, and that held up the start.  Guess he was  not up on the proper ruling...Not a technical, though....T on Ridgeway was for incorrect number in scorebook

  3. There has to be contact for any common or personal foul. The rule is both for safety and sporting play. Players were "feinting" contact and that is considered unsporting (thus a technical penalty, as well as posing an injury threat). Best early to call a block and warn players of the a penalty to follow if the it occurs again. High school players and coaches are well aware of this rule.

  4. Rule 5 - 2010-2011 Case Book Page 42

5.6 Comment B: "If a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a quarter, the next quarter is started by administering the free throws. This applies even when the foul occurs after the first half has ended. It also applies when the foul occurs after the second half has ended, provided the score is tied. If the score is NOT tied, the free throws ARE administered unless the outcome of the game will NOT be affected. If the outcome is not already decided, the free throws are attempted immediately as if the foul had been part of the fourth quarter. The division line throw-in following the technical foul cannot be carried over to the overtime as the fourth quarter ended with the last free throw." See Rule (5-6-4)

That rule reads "If a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a quarter or extra period, the next quarter or extra period is started by administering the free throws. This applies when the foul occurs after any quarter has ended, including the FOURTH quarter, provided there is to be an extra period. If there is no way to determine whether there will be an extra period until the free throws are administered, the free throws are attempted immediately, as if the foul had been a part of the preceding quarter."

So, if the score was tied and the fourth quarter had ended, (as per your initial post) and the technical then occurred with the score tied, the officials erred in their decision. The shots should have been taken to start the overtime, and the shooting team should get possession opposite table to start the overtime period. I have been a high school official for ten years, and always find unique rulings interesting. I hope this shines some light on the situation.

  5. CCHS didnt look ready to play from the warm-ups. Saturday afternoon game against a team they just ran out of the gym at home..didn't come out focused. Couldn't buy a free throw against Jeff.

Yep, CCHS probably lucked out by losing to Jeff except for the fact that its a road game. Science Hill and DB are what sets the two regions apart. The other top IMAC teams are pretty much even with the Big 9.

Any reports on the game last night??

West has no inside threats and CC dominated pulling away in the second half...Post play for CC was the difference..West guards worked hard and hustled, but just couldn't score...Cocke Co. played good defense and Ray did a good job of using his timeouts...Good luck to both teams in the region....

  6. /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" /> Whew! Thank goodness you aren't an official, but if you were I'll bet you would be overpaid! Ha! Ha! I have no sore spots, so nice try. Answer me a question Dick. My original post was aimed at consistently poorly performing officials....... not the young ones, middle aged ones, nor the "experienced" ones. I have expressed my appreciation to those officials who are doing what they can to make things work like they should. Put on your reading glasses and start reading from the beginning of this thread. Now, the question. You have 20 seconds to answer and get the prize...... Do you not agree that an official who CONSISTENTLY makes bad/questionable calls, one a large group of coaches agree is performing poorly (notice I said large group...not one or two) should be disciplined, reschooled, removed, whatever for the sake of safe play, fairness, and keeping things on a level playing field? Now, before you answer, read what I asked closely. I'm not saying ALL officials, nor even those I just plain old don't like. I'm asking about those who are consistently bad. What's your answer Dickey? /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

    Bearclaw,

I know you didn't ask me, but yes, something should be done to remedy that situation....and it is about the kids playing - not the refs, coaches, parents, or fans - but some from each group should face some of the blame for the problems....As adults we should all check our ego at the door and act in a sane and mature way, even in heated contests - we all fail at that from time to time.... /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

  7. Just throwing my two cents in for what it's worth. Referring to your comment about coaches are replaced and players are benched for not doing a good enough job... Imagine trying to replace a coach when you have zero other applicants, or the only applicant was a middle school coach that had 1 year of experience, and you knew you'd be throwing him into the fire so to speak. That would be similar to the jobs the assignors try to do. Also, imagine trying to sub in for a player that's having a bad game when you either have an empty bench or the next closest thing is a brand new player that knows none of the plays, just knows a little about the game? See where I'm trying to go with this? Coaches play the best 5 players they have on their bench (atleast we hope they do), assignors for the TSSAA put the best officials they can out there night to night. The third legs are out there because without them we'd have 1 and maybe 2 officials on each game each night... Hince why you see better officiating as you get deeper into the season, with fewer and fewer games going on. Region and Substate should have some of the better officials and the State tournament will have, well, should have the best officials the state has to offer. Just something to think about. /ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" />

    Bingo....kismet....checkmate....game over.....

  8. You apparently have never really played the game of basketball and try to hold on to the game by being a ref. Whatever dude!!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! The tssaa is a communist organization!

Boy is a good name for you....Have played and know the difference between communism and sarcasm....dude...

  9. If you only have so many certified tssaa sanctioned officials - "third legs" or whatever, on a busy January Friday night, every single official available is working....Some veterans, some newer officials, and some "third legs" have to work....Bearclaw, since you are an x official, you must know how hard it is to keep officials year in and year out...to keep them in an association and keep them happy (giving them the games they think they should have)...So many variables in an official's dedication and committment to officiating in general...

But to beat a dead horse again, I see more consistency in high school bb officiating than I do in college games....game in and game out...

Dick, you and I share the same sentiment....some people will complain and complain and complain....Referees rise above the pettiness.....we have to, because somebody has to be in charge of the contests...Just the way it is... /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

  10. Not suggesting anyone lose, but... this (really bad) system (devised only because districts want tournament revenue, when the state does not require them to hold a tournament; but only provide four teams to them for the start of the regional tournament)...... leaves itself open for teams to potentially conveniently have a bad performance in a game to get a better match-up somewhere.

Of course, it's also the same system that makes it possible to go 4-3 (or 3-3 if you had a bye) in the postseason and make the state tournament.

Enough ranting....Here's the regional tournament bracket possibilities...(With the likely team that will be in that position based off seeding listed first)

    Upper Bracket

    D1 #1 Science Hill/Sullivan Central

    D2 #4 Jefferson County/Greeneville

    D2 #2 Cocke County/Morristown West

    D1 #3 Tennessee High/Sullivan South

    Lower Bracket

    D2 #1 Morristown West/Cocke County

    D1 #4 Sullivan South/Tennessee High

    D1 #2 Sullivan Central/Science Hill

    D2 #3 Greeneville/Jefferson County

  11. That is the biggest form of horse**** I have ever heard. I wouldn't never down grade myself to be part of that sorry organization. lol! The TSSAA is out to get money and that is that! If we want to have a real champion in any sport...we need to have it like kentucky and indiana...No classifications. Shoot...in football, you can have a loosing record and make it to the playoffs! How lame.

u sir, r ignorant 2 the powers that be.... we can't call it the eastnboy way.... tssaa is bigger than your pony ######...

  12. Classic exzmple of tonights game with Elizabethton vs Happy Valley, bad calls on both ends but fans from other schools who were awaiting their game said Eliz got robbed! Eliz kids were knocked down and beat on most palys under the basket but couldnt get a call. Elizabethton had every chance to win the game but could not hit the shots from 3 to 6 feet inside. The game went to 3 overtimes with HV winning 50-48

    Believe it or not......good post earlier, Dick.... /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" />

  13. The college style is different...you know that...the quality of play is better...you know that....coaches make a lot more money and have more clout in college....you know that....high school officials are requested by the state office to call more fouls...attend a state meeting and you would become more enlightened on what the states wants refs to call.....Some college officials also call high school ball, too, and that may change their style of calling from time to time...who knows...

I'm not saying it is right or wrong, it is just the way it is...With your major playing experience, maybe you need to join and association and put on the stripes...If you can't beat um, join um!!

  14. The biggest problem I have with refs in High School is the "out of position calls." If the refs are not in shape to keep up...go ref in a little league game.

Also, I have played college ball and one of the biggest things you have to get used to is the rougher play that the refs let slide in college. In high school, you can barely touch someone or bump someone and the ref calls a foul!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please don't tell me that this is to keep the players safe...that is BS.

Until they reprimand the refs for being horrible at thier job, nothing will change...they have all the power in sports. Like B. Knight said...refs are the most protected organization in the world.

You must have missed the Ole Miss/TN game the other night.....touch fouls everywhere...

  15. It kills me to have to get on here and say I told you so but thats what I am going to have to do. I told everyone that coach crumbley is a joke of a coach and this year has proved it. I told everyone she has no coaching ability and that she has simply been able to feed off the talent that bill mulhahan has provided to her through the middle school. Well i think its pretty ironic in that the players coach crumbley has now are either the first or second season after mulhahan left and look how its turned out. Greeneville is no longer a powerhouse which is typical of the last 4 years. The reason their no powerhouse is simply in the fact that coach crumbly doesn't have one ounce of coaching ability and she has showed that this season. The technical fouls and ejection she got earlier this year is an absolute joke. The fact that the team gets suspended for their involvement in a fight shows how much control she has. It's also pretty funny i think that neither jordan short nor the sophmore point guard names were mentioned in the suspension for WATCHING the fight until coach crumbley talked to alshie, brought their names up and said they should be suspended at which time they were. What happens???? Greeneville boys get beat in 4 ots to jeff county thus ending their season. It has always been clear that coach crumbly tried to get ideas from coach d and to copy some of the things he does because she has no idea her self but what she did with alshie is a new time low. Just because she can't control her team she is going to take a low blow at coach duncan like that? Its rediculous. She has a terrible attitude, her mouth and verbal abuse of language is completely inappropriate for use around high school girls. I hope coach crumbly gets to read this cause I'm gonna tell you what you need to do. This will be a career saver so listen up....you need to put your coaching resume out right now and get the word out there your looking for a job because the absolute unbelievable amount of talent(not your coaching) you have had the past 4 or 5 years has allowed you to post a very good record on your resume...so get out now because if you stay for 3 or 4 more years your record is gonna get all messed up because your good players are gone and your not a good enough coach and make them players and by then after your record approaches 500 its gonna be tough to get a job somewhere else so get out now.

    Wow /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" /> /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" /> /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

That was harsh...I wonder what the boy's coach will do for the rest of the playoffs...Do guest commentary?

  16. Couldn't possibly have been another crew, huh?! /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" I'm sure there were other crews that did just as well a job that night. Kudos are good, but don't make the other crews in your area think that they didn't have a good game by singling out one crew.

    I wasn't trying to single one out ..... I just know BEARCLAW haunts that gym /ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" /> ....I support all the referees.... /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

  17. /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" /> Yes, it was, and Grainger won the game. Had Grainger lost, the "take" on the officials would be the same.

    Veteran and new officials working together...That's how you build a solid association /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  18. /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" /> Just got home from two good games tonight. 3 officials on the court. One experienced, and the other two fairly new at calling high school ball. All 3 did a good job. All covered where they were supposed to be and helped each other out, as one would expect. No grandstanding, some missed calls, and some bad calls, but that is understandable. Two gentlemen and a lady. Good job tonight "STRIPES". Keep up the good work!

    Must have been at Grainger....
