1. My All Conference team:

When you look at this, you need to know that:

A: I am not using a predetermined # of players from a school

B: I have seen a limited # of games this year, so some of my opinions are going to be based on what many of you have said on here, and what I have seen in previous years.

1st team: This is by position I would play them at:

    1 - Buda- Cocke County

    2 - Goins- M West

    3 - Depew - Cocle County

    4 - Dickson - Greeneville

    5 - T Hall - M West

    2nd tean:

1- Fanney -M West (this was the closest position to pick)

2 - I don't think there is another "true" all star 2 guard in the conference, so I am going to pick two 3's. Maybe Hale at East qualifies...

3 - Shipley - Greeneville, Lewis - Cocke County ( and I could have picked Smith from West)

    4 - Leeper - M East

    5 - Ryans - Cherokee

    Okay - I am an easy target - tell me where I am wrong... /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Your first team sounds pretty good, but both games this year one on one the Nelson girl from Jeff has out performed Fanney. She doesn't get the recognition of the other 2 guards in my opinion due to not playing on a State ranked team. I watched her tonight against East and she led her team down the stretch and hit a 3 pointer with no time left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Jeff went on to win the game and will play West friday. Congratulations to Taylor Hall on being a finalist. Great player.

  2. In hindsight, I was really thinking more about a big crowd/gate than quality of opponent in losing G'ville. G'ville is a big game/gate for us. I don't think Seymour or South Doyle will make up that gate in basketball just b/c of distance. Seymour is already been on our schedule in football. Sevier Co, though could be another story and another natural rivalry. Still hate losing the G'ville game.

The Lady Red had another very un-inspiring performance last night. If Jeff simply makes lay-ups and free throws, this is a very different game. Very nice honor for Shannon recognizing her 1000 points. There are lots of seniors graduating who are very active at school.

After talking with PTS, I agree, there is an up-side to the G'ville-CCHS coin toss this weekend either way. If we win, we will not play from Friday until Friday and have a bye into the regional. If we lose, we still stay in our regular routine of games during the week and not be off for a whole week and West made a great run last year from the bottom spot - though the down side is you have to win. So we will see.

I'm out of town the rest of the week, so even though we have 1 more conference game tonight, I thought I would give my end of the year district awards. My opinion only. Based on only what I saw and not averages. I saw all 6 teams play at least once and West and G'ville at least 4 times. I will give each team a member though I think two out of Fanney, Ramsey, Story, Suggs, Sprouse or maybe even Shelby May lose out b/c of that decision. I will give Mo West as champs 3, CCHS and G'ville 2 and the rest 1 for a total of 10. My choices would be:

West: Hall, Goins, Smith - though I really like Fanney and May

CCHS - Depew and Buda. I thought mid-way through the year, I would not know who else to add to Depew b/c no one else stood out and team level was pretty high. Last 3 weeks, Morgan has played her best and actually, is the only one holding our team together right now.

GHS - Dickson and for much the same reasons as CCHS I am not sure who else b/c the team concept is good. I think b/c of her scoring against us in the second game, I will take Christopher, though they struggle w/o Ramsey on the floor and Story's presence and rebounding was a big difference in the two games we played against them.

    Jeff - Kyle over Nelson

Cherokee - Ryans, who I really like

East - Leeper over Orick, though Leeper had very few points against us.

That is a pretty good all-star team.

Coach: Gaylon. For 2 reasons. I am one who believes you still have to coach regardless of how high the level of talent is, b/c the game is more than X and O's. Second, when Mo West had the game won against us in January with 2-3 minutes still to play. He called 2 time-outs on successive plays angrily fussing at his team for not controlling the game the way he wanted. It appeared to me that he was trying to get his team to play better and that was as important as winning a big game in January.

Wade and Crumbley have both done a very good job.

MVP. This is actually hard for me. Shannon has become a very consistent well rounded ball-player. Her mid-range jump shot is the best in our league. Her rebounding and ball-handling are very strong. She has a good basketball mind. Defense is solid. Does not have lateral quickness but is a very consistent player. Sidney Goins is very fast and very quick to the goal. Great to see her recovery from last year's injury. Always running in our games. Not a consistent outside shooter. Solid defense and good rebounder. Shannon and Goins will tie for 3rd in my mind.

2nd goes to Nicole Dickson. A very good shooter from any spot on the court. Quick release. She has especially hurt us with last second shots at the end of the quarter or half for 4 years. When she wants to, she can get every rebound. Only downside, she tends to take plays off. She has represented G'ville and the IMAC very well for 4 years. I don't know what G'ville does to recognize big time players, but she is one and they should. This is a close call in my mind - but - to the winners go the spoils.

So, my MVP is Taylor Hall. Inside - outside. Rebounds. Defense. Undefeated in our league. I don't have the experience that many of you have in watching players for years, but for me, she is as complete a high school player as I have seen.

You really need to get out to the games more. You're out of touch.......

  3. They aren't 12 deep. Coach Bryan Lewis is playing 12, which I think is a mistake. Maybe if he picked 8 or maybe 9 players, and stayed consistent, then maybe the players wood play a little more consistently, and maybe there would be a reason to work hard in practice, so to keep a spot, or maybe work into a spot.

To keep from getting out rebounded, you have to box out, and very few of JC's players do that. The guards watch shots go up, and don't box out the shooter, and then wonder why there girl is getting the rebound. They try for a steal in the press, and then don't hustle back and play defense. Some of the players need to learn it isn't how many points an individual scores, but if your team ends up ahead on the scoreboard. The JC players either don't know, don't care, or don't want to do the little things that they need to do to overcome thier lack of size. Or maybe the ones that know how to, aren't getting enough playing time. Most of the ones playing just don't work very hard at anything.

Depew is a perfect example. She wasn't scoring the otherr night, but did she let that affect the rest of her game? No, she worked hard on defense, and owned the boards. She helped her team in other areas than scoring. Lewis and Buda picked up the slack.

And I would take Buda over Nelson any night of the week. As freshmen, they might have been identical. Buda has made so much more progress with her game since then, while nelson has stagnated.

And 50 free throw attempts? Some of that was fouling in the 4th quarter, trying to get back into the game, but still that is an indication of being out of position, reaching, poor defense. A lot of those were fouls after giving up an offensive rebound, and that means not boxing out.

Last point on the subject. One of the last plays of the 1st half shows you what they can do, if they want to. Whiteside boxes out the big girl, and then races to the other end, and gets rewarded with an easy layup. It took the box out by Whiteside, a rebound by a teammate, the outlet pass to the guard, who hits Whiteside in stride for the layup. But that kind of effort by the whole team doesn't happen enough against good teams for them to beat good teams.

It's more like the entire sports program at Jeff has become stagnated not just some players. Losing the last few years seems to have become a way of life and accepted by most in all the sports programs with the exception of ladies golf.

  4. You are right, as I only go to a few games now, it would be nice if someone else got on here and talked about Jeff County.

I went to the game Tuesday, and I would sure like some feedback from the Lady Red's fans on this. It was the kind of game that I kept asking myself, how is Jeff County staying in this game? Don't get me wrong, I was happy that Jeff Coiunty was staying in it, but if you go down the starting limne-ups for each team, I don't think any of the Jeff County starters matchup with the Cocke County starters.

Depew had a terrible shooting night, and several times, looked exhausted out there. Was she feeling okay? I was thinking she might have been battling the flu or something.

As for Jeff County, they did not take advantage of the opportunity presented Tuesday night. Buda had foul trouble, yet they didn't force her to play defense, or take the ball to her, and as I said, Depew was having trouble making shots.

I think Friday at West is going to be a lonnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg game for the Lady Patriots.

I couldn't agree more concerning Friday nights game with West. But, this has been true with most teams that have played West this year with the exception of South Greene. Shannon Depew did not appear to be herself against Jeff and did struggle offensively from the field but was a force under the basket. With the combinaton of Cocke struggling from the field and Jeff playing almost like a balanced team the first 3 quarters they kept the game close. As far as no Jeff players matching up with Cocke, Jeff can match them at both guard positions and did during this last game. Both Nelson and Miller should have been in the game more at the same time to utilize their speed. The Nelson girl got in foul trouble and set out several minutes and eventually fouled out but still had 18 points. I thought the Huff girl did a good job of rebounding while she was in the game. Jeff has no size and they have to try and run their opponents till their tougues drag the floor but this is never the case in my oppinion Jeff tries to slow play down and post up with much taller and more physical teams. This is only my personnel oppinion and observation as a Jeff County fan for many years...

  5. Was last night Greene Devil win a milestone for someone? There are three pictures in the picture gallery of Coach C and Nicole holding a game ball. Just curious. Maybe it was as simple as the gameball presentation, but I have never seen newspaper coverage of that before.

There was a reference in the article about Nicole being the all time leading scorer.... did she do that last night? I mean, reach the mark last night.

Nicole was given the ball before the game for becoming the all time leading scorer at Greeneville during their last tournament.

  6. JCfan is still here. I have been on a mission trying to find our offense and that BIG D that was so prevalant early in the season (I think they left it in the parking lot at Soddy Daisy). It must be like March "In like a lion and out like a lamb". NO one can make much sence out of the line up. West batting .367 can't find a spot on the field. Hyde now Johnson a experianced senior catcher is at third. Peterson batting .050 is on first. The first three in the lineup can't hit a mack truck with a beach ball. Only consistancy is from Potts and Johnson. Pitchers are throwing well enough to win, but hard to throw night after night with no run support. 3 consecutive losses by one run to teams that should have been cake walks the way they played earlier. Its frustrating for the girls, the coaches, and most of all JC#1fan. As is always I love my lady PATS, girls it will come you have to be able to push through this stuff. If you can get a handle on yourselfs and focus there will few teams that can handle you in MAY (WHEN IT REALLY MATTERS) GO LADY PATS!!!!!!!!!!

With Potts and Johnson being seniors on a young team I would hope they would step up and provide the leadership needed. As for the first 3 batters on the team not being able to hit a Mack truck with a beach ball I haven't seen the other 6 positions lighting it up the last few games. It appears their present slump is a team effort from what I've observed.

  7. I hope she is OK. It almost seams like Morristown West is Snake Bit with the Injury bug. They have had allot of knee problems in the last few Years. I hope for her sake that it is sprain and not a tare she is a great athlete and I am sure that Track team and Ladies Basketball team will miss her if she can not compete.

Our prayers are with Sidney Goins. She is a great athelete and we hope the outcome Monday is positive.

  8. Just a lil tid bit, I'm assuming that you were at Cocke Co. and from the radio broadcast that I heard of this game, Nelson wasn't in there when Jeff made their run and had the press on that gave the Lady Red such fits. Also, she had 2 points (on free throws) against Cocke Co. so maybe Coach Lewis does know what he's doing over there. Obviously he did something right to come back and demolish East. First running clock situation I've heard of in H.S. basketball (I know it's a rule by TSSAA). I think there was some selfish attitudes late in the game at Cocke Co. and something was done about that obviously in the East game.

Also, Nelson averages about 14 ppg, but most of those come on fast break opportunities and she could have a lot more of those but chooses to take some plays off in the backcourt or she could have about 18 ppg. Next year will be very difficult for Nelson when teams start being able just to key in on her. But to be honest, her ppg are slightly inflated and I would take the blonde girl from Greeneville, Budda, West, and Cherokee's PG's over her b/c they are more complete players and run the team much better than Nelson does.

Great win for Jeff Co over East tuesday night and that gets them somewhat back into the picture and maybe it jump starts them into this 2nd half of the conference season. Maybe that rumor that Jeff Co fades toward the end of the year can be changed this year.

Points are points any way you can get them wheather it be 2 or 14. Most point guards do score from fast break opportunities the last time I checked. How many ppg are the other guards in the conference averging a game? The bigger problem is until the last East game Jeff has not been scoring enough as a team. You can have the other guards we're happy with the one we have at Jeff.

  9. had to reply to one thing lady red......you do a great job......but buda is so much faster than nelson!

i have a question!...starting with nelson , what are opposing guards scoring with buda on them?

i dont have theses totals sure someone does

Not sure I agree about Buda being any faster than the Nelson girl from Jeff. Buda seems to rest at times as does others on defense for several teams. The Nelson girl is Jeff's leading scorer somewhere around 13 to 14 ppg. She has to work on becoming more consistent. She had I believe 29 against East with 2 ot and then didn't score the next game against Cherokee.

  10. I don't know about 3 or 4 me players, but there's one for sure. When you try and drive against 3 players that were all taller than you and you lucky and get bailed out with a foul which was probably a bad call. On top of that you get the ball with over 8 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter. You look directly at the clock and you slowly dribble up court and throw up a half court shot without looking for anyone else. Not to mention several turnovers. 3 to start the game. She's a great little player but one person cannot do it. She is going to have to realize there are other players on the court and play under control. She looked great on one fast break with a beautiful assist but that's the only one I remember. It's hard to step up when they rarely touch the ball unless there's a play being run. I think a lot of the stepping up each girl has to look in herself and see what they're made of. Defense and rebounding went away the second half but Fulton did start making some shots. 5 in 5 out might work with the right combo.

In response to lastlaps comments, I've been to most of the Jeff games this year. If the guard didn't try to make something happen the scoring would be even less than what it presently is. The games I've attended she passes on a regular basis but everyone stands flatfooted and doesn't seem to try and execute a designed play. There are 3 starting seniors on this team and 1 or all of them need to step up and take charge of this team. I agree 1 person can't do it all it takes all five on that floor working together. I don't presently see that. Hopefully, they will get it together and turn the season around. GO LADY PATRIOTS........

  11. game of attrition...East had 4 starters fouled out also...awesome show of effort and clutch plays

I agree. A very exciting game even when the lights went out. All the girls on both teams played with a lot of heart and it's tough for either team to have to lose this type of game. The PG for Jeff stepped her game up in the 2nd half and finished strong when they needed it. Congratulations to both teams.

  12. The hiring of the new Jeff Co. coach was Friday, Monday were when tryouts were held. I got a chance to catch the second half of the Jeff/West game and to be honest with you, I was not impressed with Jeff's PG until the final 2 minutes when she actually decided to use her speed and play defense. She could be one of the quickest gaurds in the conference however it doesn't seem like she cares about playing defense. She would much rather be the girl who cherry picks and gets those easy layups. I heard that Elliott came out and banged in 2 3's for Jeff but then Jeff didn't seem to find her again until it was almost too late. If I had the conference leader in 3's on my team, I'd be feeding her the ball, just my opinion. Plus, there were several times that there was a lack of communication on what defense they were playing and that lead to several easy baskets for West. Oh and Goins looked like she was doing drills b/c she kept getting the ball in the same place and would make a move and put it up. Way too easy for her, but I think she will be a factor in every game if west is to be successful. After seeing this 2nd half of play, i think this year could be just like last year and be a crazy race at the end.

Coach Lewis at Jeff Co. is a very capable coach. He has the desire and knowledge to be a H.S. coach. You talk about middle school and high school ball being different, when you take your team to the state tourny i 2 or 3 times in a row you have to know what you are talking about. He has talent, but just give him time to get these girls to play his system and from what I saw, Jeff. Co. has to get together and play tough defense for the entire game. After Christmas break I believe Jeff Co. will be a much better team on both sides of the ball. You can't really complain to much on offense when I look at the scores for jeff co. they are scoring over 50 points a game and 60 in the last 3 games. If you can score that much in h.s. you are giving yourself a chance to win.

I spoke with 3 of the Jeff Co. players after the West game and the guards were apparently told to play back on Fanney and May to stay out of foul trouble due to their speed. The guards for West didn't beat Jeff Co. The entire team has to step up their defense to be competitive and I'm sure they will. As far as the PG for Jeff cherry picking lay ups you may want to try and attend a entire game vs only a half. All the guards to me appear to be unselfish in trying to get the ball inside to Elliott, Lyke, and Brooks. The games I have observed Jeff Co. needs some one to drive to the basket more to help open up the other players. The 3rd qtr. seems to be Jeff Co. weakest quarter and a area for improvement. They struggle coming out after half time. Let's give Coach Lewis and his staff time and opportunity to get it together. GO LADY PATRIOTS!!!

  13. Sidney Goins put on a clinic tonight with 32 points. Jeff's point does play out of control at times and tries to do to much. Of course she is still young, just a sophomore but did see a lot of playing time last year. Jeff put a blanket on Kelly Smith and Goins completely took over the game. They are really young but so athletic. If they keep improving they could definitely make some noise in the conference.

Jeff Co. appeared to be flat footed on defense most of the night. West was more aggressive on both ends of the court. I don't understand why Jeff didn't adjust to try and slow down the Goins girl. She had a huge night! The Nelson girl for Jeff appears to be in the same situation as Buda for Cocke County. She needs to be freed up and taking more looks at the basket at times and not trying to force the shot. The season is young and they are still adjusting to their new coach. Jeff has 3 starting seniors this year that will have to step up for them to be competitive this year in the IMAC. GO LADY PATRIOTS!!!!!

And as far as all-tournament, I would have to say that the coaches have a lot of influence over that, at least thats the way it is in some other sports. Two of Jefferson County's all-tournament players were seniors, smith who got MVP is a freshman. I don't think Tori has to worry about any all-tournament awards. If she keeps her head on straight, hers will come.

Does anyone know if a IMAC all conference team ever picked or announced? If so, who where they? I never saw anything in the papers.

Best wishes to the Lady Chiefs. They deserve to win a state title, but with all of the Knoxville teams, competion will be hard. All of Jefferson Co. is pulling for Cherokee! Go get 'um Ladies!

This is true. Do the War Dance "BIG" time ladies. "GO CHEROKEE"

  16. QUOTE(statman3 @ May 9 2007 - 12:36 PM) 826455425Accolades to Jeff County.

Early predictions were that a young team would go through a down year. While that was certainly true by JC standards, this team had some big wins during the year and showed lots of heart coming from behind to tie late in the last two tournament games. I think they served notice that they will not be down long.

Great season ladies. I expect you will be right back in the middle of the chase again next year.

Point well taken. To start 4 freshman in the line up they were competitive with everyone in the IMAC. Should be a contender in a couple of years. Will be interesting to follow.....

Not sure who won the "B" and "C" divisions.

Union Co. (2-3) won the "D" Division with a victory over Daniel Boone.

Cherokee's sophomore pitcher, Gilbert (sorry, not sure of her first name!), was the well-deserved MVP of the "A" Division.

Jeff County went 3 and 1 in pool play in the Tiny Day Tourney. Their only lost was to Bearden 3 to 2 Friday night. Their pitching has been solid and their hitting continues to improve they just didn't have key hits when people were on against Bearden. Coach Satterfield has done a good job of bringing her young team together...

    Cherokee 19 Union County 0

    Cherokee 5 Bearden 2

    Cherokee 9 North Greene 0

    Cherokee 1 South Greene 0 (8 Innings)

Jeff Co. went 3 and 1 in pool play. They beat South Greene, Boone, and Union County. and lost 3 to 2 to Bearden.

    Jeff beat Cherokee 5-0 today..

  21. QUOTE(statman3 @ Apr 17 2007 - 08:52 PM) 826439704Tomorrow: East wins over Jeff, West over Cocke, Cherokee over South, Greeneville enjoys the day off.

Cheroke beat Sullivan South 17-0 in 5 innings.

East won 2-1 over Jeff. East had 2 homeruns. East is playing better but still not up to their potential. Jeff had a good weekend at Kingsport. Hit the ball the best of the season. The freshman Nelson had a great tourney at the plate for Jeff according to the paper.
