  1. I'll put this into perspective for everyone. On offense the chiefs lost every single starter except for one. On defense the chiefs lost all the starters except for the MLB and the DT's. The team will be very young. They need to have an exceptional spring practice.

Losing the OC is huge but losing 10 starters on offense and 8 on defense will be hard to overcome. I think there will be a big drop odd at QB. The offensive line could be dominating at times with #79 but they lose 4 or 5 up front......The dude that played WR #20 was an awesome high school player. I think what will come back to haunt the Chiefs is not playing some young kids when the game was well in hand....I do not think the JV has done well the last two years.

But that is why they play the games. District 5AA will be a dogfight in 2014.

  2. Yea your right the "additions" .make them better a lot better. I wonder what York thinks about losing the additions. Don't count out Meigs just yet. I heard they beat York this summer ( while they had the "ADDITIONS" by 30 at crossville tourney). Then the additions show up at CR. So don't overlook the CARDIAC KIDS from Meigs. They are pretty good without ADDITIONS.

Will be routing for Meigs County. Lady Tigers will have a physical presence inside, they have a couple of girls who can score and are very solid at the point. Jason Powell will have them ready. They will have to get past those Round 1 jitters and playing in the open atmosphere at Middle.

  3. I agree and I have brought this point up in the past.  Wrestling, the grandest of all sports deserves the same treatment as other sports.  Tennis, Track and Field, Bowling, even cross country, kids get the chance to compete against kids who attend high schools that are about the same size or at least same classification as their school.  Why should wrestling be treated any different?

Give the A/AA a few years.  You will see more participation and you will see improved skill levels.  I was approached by several small school coaches and parents of small school wrestlers asking me about what off season camps and programs they need to be involved.  These people were excited about what the future of the A/AA holds for their school/wrestlers because they now believe they have a chance to compete on a fair playing ground.  In 4 or 5 years, then re-evaluate

Totally agree. It is the fear that increased participation at A/AA level will diminish the pool of talent that is available to the larger schools. Wrestlers will choose to stay at the home school rather than go to the "wrestling" school. Why has there been a decline at Soddy Daisy? maybe because there are more choosing to wrestle else where is Chattanooga. How hard does Cleveland have to work continue to the get the best in Bradley County?  Wrestling at small schools is just like girl's softball was 25 years ago. As participation grows, so will the skill level. There will more attention placed on youth league development. Kids will get better coaching at a younger age and have higher skill levels when they get into high school. As far as Alcoa goes, they wrestle Cleveland, Walker Valley and Maryville every year. You will see them compete in lots of tourneys in Chattanooga. As Greenville, Alcoa, Pigeon Forge and Hixson continue to improve, they will have to wrestle better competition. That is part of the process.

I can not believe that the coaches at AAA and D2 Private schools have negative thoughts on the success of the A/AA division. It was the Cleveland Wrestling staff that was one the first to congratulate Alcoa's coach on his team's performance.

And for the same reason Cleveland is successful...........they love the sport of wrestling!

  4. Young team! More to come!

A-AA Wrestling despite the detractors will be very competitive and continue to improve statewide. Hixson is well coached and has some tough and talented kids. Alcoa surprised many with an outstanding performance at the state tourney. Lots of good teams statewide that will keep this division competitive for years to come.

  5. Getting back on topic - I don't know how anyone could say that former McMinn Central assistant coach Joe Young isn't missed a lot. The Daily Post Athenian did an article on Johnny Morgan a couple of months ago and it showed that he was winning in the 60% range prior to Joe joining Morgan's staff. Then the Chargerettes won in the 90% range with Joe assisting, and this year without Joe assisting they're back to winning in the 60% range. That's a little more than being a coincidence.

Commenting on other things I've read - Kelsey Myers could start for any AA team in the state, in my opinion. If she didn't start every game and get most of the minutes in those games for the Chargerettes before she got hurt, it's an indictment on the head coach.

    BLITZ, Great Post!

  6. Everybody recruits.  That is not the issue.  Financial Aide is the issue.

Here is the link to their "Tuition Support Application".

    http://www.knoxvillecatholic.com/site/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2013/10/2014-2015-Tuition-Support-Application-Knoxville.pdf

Here is the link to their "Standard Parish Contribution Form"

    http://www.knoxvillecatholic.com/site/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2013/11/Standard-Parish-Form-2014-2015.pdf

The church subsidizes the tuition of all Catholic students and offers need-based financial aide to families that can't afford the tuition.  Notre Dame does the same thing.

The T$$AA By-Laws say, "Section 16.  If tuition is charged, it must be paid by parent, bona fide guardian or other family member . . . Any loan program, grant program, educational foundation or similar program that is established and/or administered, in whole or in part, by a school or official of a school is considered financial aid."

The "Standard Parish Subsidy" clearly violates these rules, but I don't think the T$$AA wants to take on the Catholic Church on this one.

Both schools award need-based financial aide, which is fine.  BUT . . . if any varsity athlete is receiving this financial aide, then the school is supposed to be in Division II.  It is hard for me to believe that not a single varsity athlete is receiving this need-based financial aide.  The only way to know is if the T$$AA investigates the tuition records.

I heard that Notre Dame was moving to Division II at mid-cycle for this reason.  If that is true, then Knox Catholic will have to do the same.

    Time will tell.

This makes a lot of sense. In many Middle Atlantic States and in the Northeast, where there are more Catholic schools and churches, they all play in their own leagues that are separated from public school conferences. Publics and privates can still play non-conference games if they choose.

  7. Rankings have been updated from this weekends competitions.

Updates are constantly being made, and at the request of a very wise man (although he is very short, he is still wise), i will start placing a timestamp on the page when i make an update.

If there is anything i've missed, please send it to me by email at hammrankings@gmail.com.

    Other than that, bash away!

Not sure how Alcoa can not be in the top 10. Won the Region Championship this week. Beat Norte Dame soundly last week. Tied  with Greenville in a tourney earlier this year.

  8. Five classes spreads out some regions way too far. Three-the old system-doesn't get as many playoff teams in as many want, plus has a fairly wide range of enrollments in each classification-at least compared to what we've gotten used to since 93. Go to four classes, send all the private schools to Division II, divide by football-playing schools, not by all schools as is done now. This isn't perfect either, 16 districts would be needed, eight regions wouldn't be enough and 12 would result in the same type of playoff mess. Since more than two teams from a district need to make the playoffs (think the Murfreesboro AAA district), end Week 0 and add an extra week of playoffs. 64 out of around 95 make it. Non-district games don't affect playoffs, just 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 in the first round.

I like 5 Classifications....Total public-private split......What is going to done with tuition playing publics?.......I would be in favor of some cross-seeding in the play-offs kind of like it was originally in 93......

  9. Carter by 21

Carter has lots of speed. Not the best upfront on either side of the ball but good enough to get some good athletes out in space. Turnovers are the key. GP is very disciplined and typically does not turn the ball over much. Not sure GP has the athletes to cover their athletes.......GP will score but Carter puts so much pressure on you with that speed.

i agree. Carter by 3 TD.

  10. No the football team will be there to play your private school, but until you start playing someone like Ensworth, Baylor, Brentwood Academy etc. stop talking your crap. You put together teams and recruit players from all over the place but still continue to play public schools and think you have done something when you win. You should actually be embarrassed to lose to Polk like you did. Bunch of homegrown boys put it on your ringers. It's ridiculous that you can't score more than 10 points with all those athletic recruits you have.

Too bad we have to play any privates. Some do it right and some operate in the gray area. TSSAA not going to ever really enforce recruiting and transfer rules. Just hard to govern "intergrity". It would be better to schedule 9 games than play them. IMO....Put CAK, GCA, WEBB, Catholic, Norte Dame, Boyd, CCA and GRACE in one District and let them go at it.

  11. It will take a miracle from Touch Down Jesus and I believe Notre Dame has already booked him for South Bend, so I don't expect my Warriors to win this game.  However, I do want to see us play as tough and competitive as possible.  It should be an eye opening experience for our freshman QB and some of the other newbies.  Its been a humbling season but if the players will learn from this, like the teams before them did, then these loses can begin to lay the foundation of future success.

    Good honest objective post.

  12. All I am saying is - yes, if those teams don't develop some type of passing game - the Irish will win. I was not saying it would be futile in developing a passing game - but it will be if they try to put it in the week they play the Irish.

Who have you all beaten in the last two years? Anybody? OK Grundy, Bledsoe and CCS. This post is an obvious reference to Polk County.Never seen a Norte Dame defense that was very physical or could stop a power play. And Polk is physical and will run power all night long. Will not need a passing game unless the "best" D Coordinator in the area can figure how to play with 12 guys. The Irish might be the most over-rated 3A team in the state.

  13. It was a tough loss, but even if we did not play our best we still we in a place to win in the end. McMinn central is a good team and it was going to take a great game to win. There we good thing to continue to build on.Our guys did not quit. Keep playing hard and we will be ok. Eventually we will play a school our size and not div 2. We could be 2 and 0 if we played the schedule others are playing but maybe not as good. We will a good team by playoffs. Go Bucs!

Tough loss in a tough game. Quit whining......You want to play a school your size, well there is a way. Go play with the private schools. You have that option every 2 years.

  14. Notre Dame will suprise some people across the state. They will probably go 9-1 or 8-2 in the regular season. How deep they go in the playoffs will depend upon when they come up against Alcoa.

Really,,,,this team is soft, play in a District that only has one good team in Signal, If they get to Alcoa, the Tornadoes might hang 50....Can they beat Polk, Loudon or Kingston? Not a top 10 team unless they have been on the recruiting trail.

  15. Cannon hit 10 treys and McMinn hit 2. McMinn was only 10 of 24 from the free throw line.

Kudos to the game plan of Cannon County. I thought their guards 24 and 5 played really well and not allowing the Central pressure to dominate. With Cannon beating the pressure, they really passed the ball extremely well in the front court against Central's man to man. Not many teams handle the defensive pressure that Central applies. Cannon challenged Central to shoot the three when they went to that collasping zone that clogged the lane up and did not give Massengil room to operate. The Chargerettes would normally have shot a few three pointers and gotten Cannon out of the sagging zone, but it was an off night from the arc.A few of other observations and points about a great game.

    1. Cannon County loses number 20 about 3 minutes into the game and she does not play the rest of the first half. CC still leads at half time.

    2. When CC built the big lead, Central seem to get "out-rebounded" despite a size advantage.

    3. The efforts by Cindi Williams and Kelsey Young to rally Central was very impressive. Both played great on both ends of the floor to get Central the lead.

    4. Officials were letting them play. The play was physical from start to finish. Hard screens, block-outs, post play and hand checking were all part of the action. Depending on your POV, they missed some calls both ways. Tough call at the end, that is made in real time.

    5. Great game. Two great teams and coaching staffs. That is why people start showing up 2 hours before game time. The

Central Community supports thier team and the kids. Disappointment is part of the high school athletic experience but anyone that has participated would not trade the experience.

  16. Cody you luckily got past Brainerd

    T-Mac,

Your are a highly respected poster on these boards. You must give credit where credit is due. McMinn took on Chattanooga's best. Beat Tyner, Branaird and took Howard to the wire. The Chargers could complete in District 6AA this year. Often times that is not the case but this year, McMinn Central at least deserves some respect from Chat town.

Lucky against Branaird. Do not think so.......The panthers were completely gassed in the 4th quarter. The Chargers scored 26 in the last 6 minutes and Brainard could not do anything about it. Panthers got out-played down the stretch.

  17. Welli heard the guy that was doing the work outs.who is not a coach, quit because no one was paying and most wasn't showing up.As i said last year about this team the head coach is coaching jv basketball. Its a shame for the kids.Alot ask me whats it going to take to get over the hump.Well a coach who does his job is a great start. But if the parents are happy i guess its fine.Just hope he retires before my youngest gets there.Just because you won a state championship in 1987 or somewhere around there, doesn't mean your the greatest coach in the world.I also heard ,don't know if its true or not,but the off, cord.is not returning either.

The OC at Sequoyah did a pretty job. Got a lot of people involved with the offense. He will be missed if he leaves.
  18. CAK will be a good 3A football team, but not outstanding by any stretch, in my opinion.

How does Grace look for next season?

I thought that CAK was playing 4A come play-off time.....Looking at playing wiht Fulton and Greenville.
