  1. I only know of one for sure and he thought it went well. He is in Alabama , won a state championship in 5A and played for another, been a head coach for 20 years. He is an excellent, excellent coach, but he is an even better man. The kids would love him. Runs a disciplined program but it is the same for everyone, no exceptions. I don't know everyone that Heritage is interviewing but I would be hard pressed to think any of them has all the intangibles that this coach brings to the table. If you want a name,, that will have to come from Chip. I hope Heritage gets him, you want be disappointed.

I believe we are talking about the same coach, and from what i have heard it is. I don't know who the others that Heritage is interviewing are, but the coach from alabama is one heck of a coach! And a good man. If this guy gets the job you folks will get a excellent coach. I also think that this guy would be a great fit at Heritage. Good luck own your search!

  2. A little insight from someone who came through the Maryville System and now a chief! It all starts with there Midget team (5th and 6th grade). Coach Sentell (Volunteer coach) was my coach and has been now for 25+ years. He was a hard nose Disciplinary that ran the basic Maryville offense and defense. Then we moved to Junior High School (Grade 7-9). Coach Anderson was my coach and had been there for 20+ years! Two of the assistant coaches were young men just starting their coaching careers. All three of these coaches were also in the box on Friday night working with the high school staff. The high school used the middle school as a feeder program not only for players but also for coaches. In JR High we ran the EXACT system, schemes, plays, etc. as the high school. When we got to high school we knew exactly what to expect. Now that is a system! It sure would be nice to have a middle school program to develop players and young coaches. (Money is the key, you must pay the middle school coaches and they must be on the high school staff). Also the LL programs still can play a very IMPORTANT role, both sides need to have good coaches at all levels. There is a place for both LL and Middle school programs.

You are correct jrw There system (PROGRAM) allows their tallent to be successful.

LETS BUILD A PROGRAM!! Go Chiefs!

    Lets build a program!! Amen.

  3. Quote: (Red white) Heck I can take a I formation with two tightends, move that tailback over behind the tightend and I now have the Double Wing.

Explain this if you do this it does not make a double wing, it makes you look like a fool, cause i do believe you are still short a wing. Oh unless you are going to give the defense a chance by playing with 10 men. I bet that is what you are going to do cause you so smart.

Let me slow this down for you again Slowber. OK in the I we have are fullback who is lined up behind the QB right. (are you following me so far?). Then you have your I -back right behind the fullback right!(I hope this is not to fast). Remember when I said we had 2 tightends alright. That means that they are both in tight, right next to the tackles( I hope you know who the tackles are, because if you don't you will not get this.) Being that we are in a tight formation, that other back is lined up tight also. That being at the WING.(take your time and read real slow, you will get it). Now when we move that I-back over at the other wing (you know the I-back, the one who was behind the fullback). Bam, we are now in a Double-wing set. If you really think hard you will get this. Maybe get some crayons & paper and try to draw it out.

  4. And this is for Slowber. The 1st difference between the two, FORMATION!, Let me say this again real slow. I T S A D I F F E R E N T F O R M A T I O N. Heck I can take a I formation with two tightends, move that tailback over behind the tightend and I now have the Double Wing. You know Y. Because I changed the formation. And Y would a coach who ran the WingT want to move players around so it would look like a Double-wing? Because he wants to change formations. To run plays that are more effective out of a certain Formation than they are out of another Formation. And here is another tip for ya. If you want to run a Crossbuck, please do it out of something other than a spread double-wing. Are you friggen kidding me. And your a LL coach?

  5. The High School coach's job is to build a PROGRAM. This program starts at the LL level. He does not have to conduct practices there. He invites the LL coaches to sit in on his practices and learn what they do and then hand it down. He gives them a copy of his base playbook so they can teach the LL players entry level naming conventions, formations, blocking assignments that they will need to know when they get there.

Key words here "build a PROGRAM". Your right, got to have a good feeder program. Very, very, important.

  6. You got to be kidding me? I don't guess that part of the success that Maryville has had over the past 7-8 years has anything to do with the fact that their high school coach is involved in the youth leagues and they run the same base system that the high school does, huh?

Technique and fundamentals should be taught at every level. But if the LL teach them the same way the high school does, the high school coaches can concentrate more on the details of their system and not relearning how they want things done.

Good post! One of the best examples of this is Polk Co.

  7. Actually the double wing that Georgia Tech runs is the same basis for what Sequoyah has run lately and it is called the Spread Option. Paul Johnson's exact words to me is that is nothing more than a variation of the Wishbone. It is absolutely nothing like th Wing T in his mind and since he has had more success at the college level than most with it, I would be inclined to call it the Spread Option formation. It is not the Wing-T by any stretch of the imagination. It is the Spread Option. Either way it really doesn't matter what you call it the fact is it will work as well as the I, Spread, Split Back or Gun if you work at it and coach it well. Football is about fundamentals and not about formations or offense. If you have fundamentals and strength and execute you will win. Ask George Quarrells his opinion and he will tellyou the same.

Your post is very accurate. These two offenses are very different. It is a variation of the wishbone, but with its spread formation it makes it much more dynamic. The main linking still being the triple option. This is a very tuff offense to defend because of all its versatilaty. Much easier to throw the ball out of this formation than the bone because you actually always have 4 recievers spread out. Also when using the deep motion this offense can be very much like running the I formation. Also like the wishbone this offense is neutral. Which is to say by alinement you are not strong to either side. What you can run right you can also run left without tipping off the Defense. I also agree this offense is not the wing-T by any stretch of the imagination. I watched Georgia Tech a couple of times this year. It is a thing of beauty watching them run this Offense. They had over 400 yards rushing against Georgia, I bet you would be hard pressed to find the last time a team ran the ball all over the Bulldogs like that.

  8. I'll tell you one thing - a lot of people would love to see Satterfield back at Greenback - our program still misses him. Give him some time - we're just glad to see him back in the area.

As far as The LL Football teams - the only thing that has hurt them has been the FORMING of these middle school teams. Just leave these programs alone - Just let the kids play and have fun and not get burnt out before High School Ball

We have no middle school teams. So how has that hurt the LL? The only thing that has hurt the LL is the LL its self. Both of these LL programs are always down toward the bottom in total wins in thier league. Sure there might be a team here and there that will be a little better than .500, but thats about it.

  9. The thing about Madisonville and Vonore though, is that they are two different communities, and were fierce rivals. You would think that 12 years would have smoothed things out, but I guess not. The thing is, it is only a minority, but that minority holds a lot of power. Now, I don't know the details, but that is just my perception.

I do know that the Students are proud of Sequoyah High School. I have encountered many of them, and most of it has been positive.

Sure, I love beating the Chiefs in all sports, but I can't wish ill will toward a group of young men and young women. Some of the graduates of Sequoyah need to step up, and take leadership over the cronies who have been dragging this through the mud.

Your perception is pretty good. The students have never been the problem at Sequoyah, its the adults. For the most part it is a minority of folks but that small group yells and screams pretty loud, and they know enough of the right people to really stink things up. As for the rivals part, I don't think that is as much of a problem that it is made out to be. The real problem seems to be that with the 2 feeder programs kids play certain positions and have certain roles on their LL teams and when the get to High school, all the sudden there is alot more compitition for positions and playing time. Instead of LL coaches and parents preparing these kids for this and accepting it theirselves. They try to control things as much as possible. When that does'nt work they start blaming coaches and everyone else.

  10. After everything that happened, you could not have expected them to turn things around in one year. Satterfield is in is final years of coaching IMO,(about 5 more years), but if can get that program on its feat, Sequoyah will be a very good program(Similar to Loudon). It would help if Madisonville and Vonore combined in the little leagues, but with the infighting, I don't think that will happen. In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of a good high school program, is the foundation in the little leagues. (look at Maryville).

I like your post. You are right about several things here. I also think that Seqouyah could be a very good program. The feeder teams is very important for any good high school program. IMO I would like to see a middle school team or teams put into place. The key to this would be to make sure the right person was the head coach( the high school coach should make this decision.) From my understanding this was talked about last year but ran into alot of resistance from some of the LL coaches. To many people around here worried about themselves instead of having a good football program. For the most part both these LL programs struggle.

  11. Just wondering every body's thoughts on Sequoyah's football team this year. Are you satisfied with the outcome? the effort? The new coach?

With all that has gone on, this team responded well. Good group of Seniors, not the most athletic bunch but they played with alot of heart & desire. Still a long way to go for this program but you have to start somewere. If we will leave the coaches alone and give them a chance we will see?

  12. I continue to read on this thread of region3 teams lacking the number of athletes to defeat teams from region4, and I totally agree. We all thought Central would have the athletes to win a least 1 round. Maybe Central was not that athletic, its just that the rest of us are that bad. As 6+4+3=2 alluded to earlier, Polk had 1 kid who ran 4.6 to 4.7. I doubt Meigs had any and we played Region3 teams who were slower than us. Its easy to look fast when everyone else is so slow.

Now couple the lack of atheletes with no middle school programs and you see the end results. IMO we will never see middle school programs in our area because of a lack of funding.

Come on oldschoolcharger it hasnt been that long since we been to the playoffs. oh how soon we forget. lol

To say that Central or Howard have not had the athletes the last 2 years is just wrong. I watched Central play Greenbriar last year and Dekalb this year in the playoffs. Central was bigger & faster than either of them. Definatly more athletic! The difference is in the coaching. Halftime of the Central Dekalb game was tied at 14 each. Second have Dekalbs coaches 14 - Centrals 0.

I do agree that we need middle school football in this region.

  13. Great post. I agree totally. Not saying you are accusing me of this, but, I wasn't purposely singleing out one or two players, in case some people may have took it that way. I agree with what you said about #21 and #44 and there are many more that contribute greatly to this team. Every week you could highlight a different kid on both sides of the ball.

No, I did'nt take your post at all that way. I agree with you about those kids. I do not think you were trying to single out anyone. We have talked about some of these kids alot and these 2 kids have also impressed me after watching the games. #21 has seemed to make a big play in just about every game and that just stuck in my mind. Besides hearing their names on the P.A. system i have no clue who these kids are. I also agree with you that alot of kids are contributing to this team.

  14. It will not die until everyone is willing to let it go. A post was made a few weeks ago that Mr. Williams and Mr. Lowry were to thank for the season. That was either before or after the Notre Dame game, can't remember when for sure. This was his shot back. It will continue to go back and forth until EVERYONE is willing to let it go. Its funny though, nothing was said (like this) about the aforementioned post.

Don't get me wrong I agree with you, as I'm sure many others on here do. But the sad reality is that people like to hold grudges and some people like to keep fires burning so they poke at the embers every once in awhile.

Kind of changing subjects; these guys have really impressed and amazed me this year how they have come together and rebounded from this unfortunate incident and are putting together one fine season. #37 & #15 look like the leaders of the offense, but I have been impressed with the leadership and aggressive play of #57 on defense.

I also have been impressed with these young men. I think you have to look at these Seniors & Juniors and give them alot of credit. With all they have been through in having 3 different head coaches and then the complete let down in the unfortunate events of this Summer. Which might I add in both cases have been caused by what are suppose to be adults! These kids have rised up above all this junk and pushed their way through these muddied waters. These kids come out every Friday night and give there best even though the deck has been stacked against them. Some of these Seniors who have been put down around and about and on these threads continue to go out and give everything that they have got. Well I say I tip my hat to you guys. What a fine example you are for my kids and for this area. Alot of us adults around here could learn some much needed lessions from these young men! I would also like to thank Coach S. for his comment in Sundays paper about these Seniors and what kind of leaders they have been for this team.

As for the team I also agree the Offense is starting to come around. The coaches have done a real good job the last couple of games in their play calling. Coach S. stated in Sundays paper even though he would like to throw the ball, but when the horse is running stay with the horse. This offense gives these kids their best chance. Also since we are on certain kids. I think #21 & #44 have also been playing well. #21 pound for pound may be the hardest hitting player on this team. Watching him during games on both sides of the ball he is always flying around looking to lay a block or big hit on someone. Both these kids seem to give Max effort all the time. Also the Defense has steadly improved all season.

Go out Friday night and play hard Chiefs! Sequoyah 35 - 7

  15. Great job Chiefs!! Way to go out and get that "W". Good job by the coaches calling the game. Once we went to that double wing and ran the veer and those misdirection plays east ridge could not stop it. I don't know what we ended up with, but we had to have over 300 yards rushing last night. After watching these first 5 games there is no doubt that this team is at its best when we line up and run this offense. The wings had a big game last night. Carson & Breeden both seem to be getting around 5 to 6 yards a carry. 1st time i have seen us do this all year and stick with it. Great job by the Oline, big holes to run through all night. We did'nt throw the ball near as much but when we did we did it out of this set. I think that is when we are most affective in the passing game. Also the Defense is getting better each week. Our secondary was really hitting last night, knocked some balls loose. Defense is alot better than we were at the first of the season. Work hard this week and lets go get Tellico. Don't over look them they are much improved and they will play us harder than anyone else they play.

  16. When is the last time Polk County won a region championship? Not in the last two decades. They were just like Central was three years ago and Sequoyah is this year. The Cats did not win very many until Coach Davis arrived. He turned it around like Derrick has done at Central.Things run in cycles around . Ask Meigs County. Sequoyah, Meigs, Polk and Central will always go through the ups and downs.

Yes, you saw our JV play BUT in the end it is how those players develope over a period of time. The Chiefs have 15 seniors on their roster. Normally that would be an advantage. The Chargers have 25 juniors on this year's team. The defense will return almost intact for 2009. Three out of 5 offensive lineman that started against the Chiefs return. Another starter that is a junior is injured. Yes we lose some very good players . Point is that most of the JV that is playing this year will get another year to develope and two more years in the wieght room. Most kids change alot between the freshman and junior years.

Good luck against the Pioneers. You guys are tough at home. This would be a good week to start turning things around.

I said Polk was a good program. out of the teams in this region since 2000 till now counting the records so far this year.

    wins - loses

    1. Polk Co. 61 - 32

    2. Meigs Co. 56 - 35

    3. East Ridge 49 - 43

    4. Notre Dame 48 - 47

    5. Howard 43 - 45

    6. Grundy Co. 42 - 50

    7. McMinn Cent. 30 - 58

    8. Sequoyah 18 - 68

    9. Tellico Plains 16 - 70

Polk has been the most consistant program. That was my point. They have done it with their system, not because they have had better tallent. You have to give credit were it is due. Talent runs in cycles not good programs.

  17. 18. Not much talk coming from Charger fans, this open week lulled everyone to sleep. My prediction is

    Chargers 48

    Irish 12

As long as they keep there heads in the game, that is the Ref's I'm talking about. I think centrals guys could have hand there hand taped up in there last game and still would have been called for holding.

Central should roll in this one. Chargers 42 - 7

Here is a tip. If you don't want holding called don't hold, if you don't want blocking in the back called don't block in the back. If you don't want a face mask called don't grab the mask. You get the idea- if you don't want penalties called don't commit them, but if you do don't cry about it when it gets called.

  19. I doubt that Central will be "down" to Sequoyah's level my friend. The Chargers have already won as many games as Sequoyah will the entire football season, and they have just completed a third of it. /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

And guess what, I will tell you right now that next year the Chiefs will get beat again by the Chargers. Any slightly above average team can dominate this region with all of the weak teams, like Sequoyah's. It's just the bare truth!

So in your mind Central is just a slightly above average team? Your right this is a weak region, there is no debating that. And I do think Central will be decent again next year, but after that its right back down to the bottom for the Chargers ( I have seen your JV's play.). The only consistantly good program in this region is just south of you guys at Polk Co.

  20. POUND THE ROCK

That didn't work out to well did it. I think it is time we all admit our O-line just is not good enough to POUND THE ROCK. They could not block a defensive front they outweighed by 40-50 LBS, and never blocked the middle LB, who by the way Notre Dame fans #7 played a well of a game definitely the heart of your defense. The FB in the I formation is too slow constantly got in way. I think there was a combined total of 6 either unsportmanslike or pass interference calls on seniors who should show more discipline than that.

Our # 57 played good on defense 7-8 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries.
