  1. Trousdale County should play all 8A opponents in all sports in which they participate, if Mr. Satterfield has made that call, then he has made a very poor and shortsighted decision in my opinion.

As for GeorgeBailey's comment about Jackson County and concession stands, no one in the Jackson County softball program has told you or any other school that they could not bring their own food.

  2. I have now seen the "other three" teams in this district (H2Otown, RBS, and TC) in person, and I think 8A is in for some interesting battles this season. I have not seen the private school or G'ville in person, but I am hearing G'ville isn't as strong as they were last year (a couple of early box scores would seem to indicate that as well), so 2nd place could be up for grabs.

  3. I wouldn't go as far as saying RBS is "waaay down this year". RBS only lost 2 or 3 seniors last year, 1 of which will be tough to replace. However, RBS returns quite a few pretty good players so they should finish close to where they did last year. I think Watertown lost their starting pitcher so they're my pick to finish last.

I offered my opinion after seeing an RBS scrimmage. After having watched them in a "real" game, I would still say that they are not as strong as they have historically been, but they are also not "waaay down" as I first opined. Coach Porter is a good coach and RBS will battle everyone they play, they just may not have enough guns this year. I saw H2Otown Saturday, and they have at least 1 fairly strong pitcher. I thought they were fundamentally sound as well, so I think they will finish a strong 3rd.

  4. I apologize for original post. My question was more in fact of when do you actually start collecting stats for the season, not methodology that you use to keep the stats. I have used Turbo Stats, Excel, IScore, GameChanger, etc..? Kind of like if there is an umpire do you keep the stats for tha annual total, even though it is a tournament or playday or do you wait until season actually starts to start official stats? Or Stats just from district games, etc.

I keep stats for the preseason, but I do not count it in my season totals. Once the season starts, I include all stats up to and including post season tournaments.

  5. Gordonsville and the Private School will battle it out again this year. I hear H2Otown is pretty decent as well, but I will know more after I see them this weekend. RBS is waaay down this year (sorry Swanson), I think they battle with Trousdale for cellar dweller status this season.

  6. Jackson County took home the district 7A title last night winning at Clay County 9-3 to complete a perfect 8-0 district record. This marks the 1st district title in JCHS history (JCHS shared the regular season title with Clay County last year). The girls, parents, and coaches are working hard to build a quality program, and this is the first step in a long process.

    Final 7A standings:

    JCHS 8-0

    Clay Co 6-2

    Pickett Co 3-5

    Monterey 2-6

    Clarkrange 1-7

  7. G-Ville beat MJ in The Duff Tournament, 6-1 & MJ went on to win that tournament if i'm not mistaken. AND if i am also not mistaken, you ranked MJ #4 in last weeks poll. Last I checked, that counted for something.

I don't know in what tournament G-ville played MJ, but the Duff tournament isn't until this weekend, so it wasn't in the Duff.

Gordonsville has a very good team this year, quite possibly good enough to compete in the Spring Fling. The problem will be getting by one of the Chattanooga teams in the sub-state.

  8. FCS. I watched them play a few games this weekend. The Coach is Definitely a baseball coach. It was good to see Darcy back on the Field. No warm ups before games? Just throwing the ball around. Yes MRNOITALL they did not look good at all. You know as well as I do They do not care about girls sports there at that school any more. It's sad.

I have not seen FCS, and can't comment on them but I can tell you that Gordonsville looks VERY good this year. Their lineup can hit the ball hard from top to bottom, and they have solid pitching as well. I think G'ville wins 8A, wins Region 4, and takes a trip to the Spring Fling this year.

  9. Jackson County beat Clay County 5-0 tonight, first game for both teams. 1 run game until the bottom of the 6th. It's a long way until the end of the season, but for now there is a new king of the 8A mountain. Both of these teams have really good young pitchers that just need a little defensive help behind them.

  10. I think you are speaking about district 7A, not 9A.

As for Clay County winning the district, they split the regular season championship with Jackson County last year, and the district should come down to those two teams again this year. You are on the money with your assessment of the state of softball in this district otherwise, very few girls in this area grow up dreaming of playing softball. The two teams that make it out of this district come tournament time will indeed face an uphill battle in the region, Friendship Christian is always good and Gordonsville will be very tough this year as well.

Your reasons listed are very true: No history and therefore little local support; what few girls that do play travel ball in this district have to go to Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga; teams do have to play in tournaments and coaches do have to go to clinics.

Interestingly enough, there is a player in this district that has signed with a D1 school, so there is some potential for good players, but it takes motivated players and parents and lots of sacrifice.

  11. How did the tournament turn out?

Jackson County won the tournament by beating Stone Memorial in the finals. Jackson County beat Station Camp in the semi's and Stone Memorial defeated Coffee County in their semifinal game. Jackson County went undefeated in pool play, winning a 3rd game against Mt. Juliet 15-13, and winning a time shortened 3rd game against Stone Memorial 5-3.

  12. The problem is very simple, money! Families will be required to pay more in the future for school cost. Even so how important is volleyball after the young ladies no longer can play the game? I for one believe to much pressure is applied by parents for their Kids to BE THE BEST. What is the best? And for what? To make the parent feel good or the coaches? I have traveled to many counties this year, in every school money is a issue. Many such as Knox, Anderson and others are considering the cuts in all sports programs. Again this year you will see the old schools and programs at the state tournment, The money that is driving these schools is simply drying up and their parents will have to pay more for them to play. This will take alot of kids without the resources out of sports. The state of sports in the state is in serious condition this year, we will see what happens!

How important is VBall after they quit playing? It depends on what kind of coaching they have received and what type of environment they played in. Used correctly, sports is a great tool for teaching our children about life. So I think it can be very important.

My DD does not play at a big name school and after playing 1 year of club will probably not play again (an issue of VBall conflicting with another sport, we have no beef with club), so I am not posting this to defend either.

I do want my DD to be THE BEST, the best she can be. At everything!!! I want her to be the best student, athlete, christian and person she can be. There is nothing wrong with setting high expectations for your children, in fact I think any good parent should have high expectations for their children! Being the best she can be isn't determined by whether her school hangs a championship banner or wins a gold ball.

There is no dispute that money is an issue in many places right now; however, I caution all School Boards to carefully consider cutting some sports programs and not others. Like it or not, Title IX would probably come into play if it was determined that girls sports were affected more than boys sports.

  13. The last two berths should be very interesting. IMO there isn't a lot of difference in the next 6 or 7 14U teams (Worth 95, Diamonds, Illusion, Explosion, Firebirds, Valley Thunder, Silver Eagles in no particular order). I have seen all of them play really well, and I have seen them all play pretty poorly.

  14. Signal Mountain claimed its berth by traveling to Jackson County and defeating the Blue Devils 3 games to 1. The match scores were 25-21, 17-25, 25-15 and 25-12. Looking forward to seeing all the teams from Chattanooga in the 'Boro.

Congrats to the Lady Eagles. They were the best team on the floor tonight and deserve to go to the State Tournament.

  15. 89, get your A game ready. You will enjoy the folks from Signal and get their story as to how liong they have een playing volleyball. This is not your reguler A school. Their ballin' is very good. To play in their district you either play good or you have to leave the gym. Good luck in the match there.

    Two quick thoughts:

    1. When you make it this far, everyone can play well.

    2. When you play anyone from the Chattanooga area, you better be ready to play.

Hopefully our girls will be ready to play.

  16. Jackson County hosted the Region 4A tournament last night, and defeated Friendship Christian 3-1 in the championship match!!!

Jackson county opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Red Boiling Springs in the 1st semi-final match. The game scores were 25-15, 25-14, 25-15. RBS didn't play as well as I have seen them play, and JC came with their A game.

In the second semi-final match, Friendship Christian prevailed over Clay County 3-2. This was the most intense match I have seen all year. Every point was contested, and neither team ever gave up. The game scores were 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 26-24, and 15-10.

In the finals, the intensity carried over from the previous match, but JC proved to be to much for a tough FC team that never gave up even though they played 9 consecutive physically and mentally draining games. The game scores were 25-23, 29-27, 20-25, and 25-21.

JC now hosts Signal Mountain in a sectional match-up on Thursday, while FC will travel to Boyd Buchanon.
