  1. It may help to go to some coaches clinics. I know our head coach and the school pay for the coaches to attend various clinics, normally one per yer. We have went to the Big East clinic, the Tennessee one, and one associated with Nike last year. You will learn trust me. I have been coaching for over 17 years and I always can take something from clinics and out it to good use. Also, form and earlier thread... beethoven suggested volunteering your time. Look for some high schools and just ask. You will have to work your way up, but everyone who is anything in this field has done just that.

  2. Yep, all that can be said has pretty much been said. I just want the program to get where it needs to be so the kids, parents, and community can have something to get behind again. It's hard to play for the team because the kids take a lot of crap because they haven't won much. It's not easy to get up for a game when the kids go in on Friday mornings and hear how much ya'll losing by this week? Hopefully this is the low point for the program, and it will start to get back on track. Work hard this offseason guys. Best of luck to Coach Kelley. No matter what happens on the field this year, you can still look back and have great memories of the times you had playing football for CCHS.

How will the new classification work for Cocke County? Hopefully it will give them a chance to win more games and build more confidence with the kids in the program. I hope Cocke Co. will get on track. Word is that they lose a ton of seniors off of the team. I hear that one football senior is happy to be back in basketball and his father agrees. They said it will be very hard for the football program next year, so hopefully the coaches can get more people out and also keep them involved and fired up.

I also want to thank "WPFAST" for taking the time to answer some of my questions and rumors that I have heard. I am sure there are more sides to the story. WPFAST, thank you again for the information you personally sent to me. We will definately use the workouts and suggestiuons in our offseason programs. The plyometric section and speed workouts are phenomial! You seem to be a class act and thanks again for helping our program. I simply cannot understand why Cocke County High School and even the school board would not want someone with your professional experience involved or even to be used as an advisor. That is what I cannot understand. If your ever up near Chattanooga, please come see us and thanks for taking your time to help!

  3. Next up- player development.

Well here we go. This is one of the things I can honestly say is one of things that directly stands out. As a whole, the players are weak, they are slow, they cannot move, and most are out of shape! I have seen this with my own eyes and I hear of it from todays players for whom I communicate with. I hope that CCHS doesn't do the annual "we start back up after Christmas break" routine this year. Take 1 week OFF and get your players back in the weight room!!! And for goodness sake, in the summer, do not just leave the weightroom open with a sign in sheet. High school student-athletes are not going to do everything unsupervised. And if they don't make their times and tests in the fall, what are you to do? Kick them off a 0-10 football team? Set goals and objectives. Make attendance mandatory. Offer special awards like # choice, names on back of jerseys, lifting competitions, etc. Have like a team running and lifting olympics competition and do it before spring practice. Open it up to the public and charge a few bucks. Get the community involved and let your players have some excitement. Back to development, it's really a thing where education is a factor... true story... this past spring, at the University of Tennessee Strength & Conditioning clinic, there were 5 COSBY COACHES THERE AND NOT 1 CCHS COACH. Well let's see, Cosby lost some good seniors from 2007 and CCHS brought most players back. Cosby is now 1 game away from going from 2-8 to a district championship and CCHS did worse finishing 0-10. I guess those coaches must have learned something and actually carried what they learned out. (I hope they comment on that later in this thread.)

This whole player development is more than just how much you bench and 40 times. It's about developing athletes. Not only strength, but power, speed, explosiveness, and flexibility. I offered my services to BOTH Cosby and CCHS athletes. I allowed players to train at a staggering $10 per workout. I later had to change to $20 because I cared enough about the athletes I had left, I would actually make the drive from CHARLOTTE, NC! During that time I was training, I did not have a lot of kids to work with. Some just were too lazy, some did not care. There were coaches (not just football) from both schools that even discouraged it, if you can believe that. They were told... "that stuff can't help you." I even had a summer strength and conditioning camp for elementary school kids. I personally appeared at each and every elementary school and talked to every student in class from grades 6th to 8th and gave each and every kid a flyer. The cost of the camp was $50 for 8 sessions (two weeks of work). 13 athletes came out. I guess it was an area thing and besides you will get that deal NO-WHERE in the USA. My Newport training ended early this past spring. I was told that I needed liability insurance in order to use the school's facilities by the ahtletic director. Well I guess he figured that I did not have it. I certainly did have it and through a national organization. Next the school gave me a sheet for "facility usage charge". Well this charge was higher for each time I was there. Besides I was doing this for the kids and barely making anything. I was training them on my own time from my NC athletes! I was there training kids for almost a year before this "charge" was put into place. (I would love to see what the Newport Theather Guild? is charged for using the school's gym and I bet it's not a penny) I suspect jealous football coaches in wanting to remove me. None would ever communicate with me. A few parents rallied for me to continue training and actually got a school board meeting set up. All football coaches were present, so it was actually funny. It was stated that CCHS already has "educated and qualified exercise physiologists and strength trainers" on staff and does no longer needs my services for it's athletes.

Well what happened to those "professionals" this year with the football program?

My advice to the CCHS coaches... all of them, not just football. Pay the $65-70 bucks and go to these educational clinics and learn. If you TRUELY care about the well being of your athletes and future development, don't cheat the athletes that are wanting and aspiring to play at the next level by "doing what we used to do." Give your athletes the tools to excel and provide them the best training you can. Shouldn't all coaches "strive" to do that for all the players?

My comments from these posts are the truths that I know from players, parents, middle school coaches, student-athletes, and my own experiences dealing with athletics and football in the Newport area. I would like to say that I am NOT hurt, angry, jealous, envious, looking for revenge, or even stating "I told you so." Also, in no way am I personally bashing any individuals on here. It may seem like it, but it's not. If this program (CCHS Football) is going to get back to it's winning ways, certain steps must be put into play rather than everyone crossing fingers and hoping for more than 1 win. If I did not think CCHS could ever be a winner, then I certainly not would have ever commented on this topic and have answered an email from a complete stranger to come to this thread. I live far away in Florida now and I hope CCHS can do something in the future. As a former football player myself and alumni, I still have some pride left (although it is very small). If I can motivate anyone in the community, coaching staff, current players, new players, anyone, then I can be satisfied that my comments helped. In finishing, CCHS student-athletes are good people, all of them, I know that with the proper direction, that school can be good again. Until that time, I hope everything is done to get the very best out of the players, on the field and off! It starts from the top down (this does not include the head FB coach) and until then, the CCHS situation will not improve!

Wow, great insight. I knew something was up when I read those Cocke County Plain Talk articles about the school board meetings, parent committee, and your position.

Hey, by the way, can you fly up from Florida to train our athletes? I can see if we can put something together for you if you do the clinic stuff. We were going to get BFS to do something like that, but we had some people get hurt from the box squatting stuff they were doing. Thanks for your insight and information. One of the Newport players' parents told me you would be a great person to speak with on this topic and he said you cared about a lot about the kids you worked with. Good luck!

  4. Well ok FOshizzle, I have decided to create an account and answer this post as you asked.

Thanks so much for responding! I don't know if you remember the Crumptons from Columbus High in FL, but they had some fantastic things to say about you and some of the work you did for their boys when you were at the Scout camp in Boca Raton a few years ago. You sound like you know a lot of whats been going on in the Newport area and you seem to care. Good information and its also what I hear from that area...

Sounds like more people need to buy in the system. It also seems like something is holding the program back. Im still surprised that more Newport fans and players have not commented on this topic. I hope the Morristown East game this week is not going to get out of hand.

  5. So I take it when November rolls around... Cosby is in the playoffs and Cocke County is turning in equipment!

Seems like Newport's finest wear blue and black, not red and black!

    Congrats and good luck! /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  6. Congrats to the Eagles with a not only a huge win, but to show that they are 2 legit to quit!

Hampton up 16-0 and got wore out after that. Must have been a great game.

    /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

  7. Foshizzle a little info on the whole Cosby CCHS debate. It goes nowhere. People argue about it quite a bit. Administration wont let it happen. As for who would win, this would be the year that Cosby has a good chance of winning in football. Would be a huge community event for sure. Think the argument really took off when Cosby had the good year in 06.

Thanks for the update. I think I have asked enough questions in regard to this topic. I am done commenting on it, just like the program itself, it's worthless. If the administration is standing in the way of this game agaisnt cosby... shame on them!

I saw where CCHS lost tonight to the 1-6 team in the conference. If Cherokee is able to put away Boone... then trouble awaits next week.

Sadly, seems like the Fighting Cocks are doomed to 0-10.

How can they even say they can in a game in the next few years after graduating many seniors. OUCH!

  8. I figured that more people would have chimed in. Cocke County is playing David Crockett this week. 0-6 vs. 1-6.......... sounds like a powder-puff game.

Is this Cocke County's best chance to win yet or will they go down again.

Word I hear out of Newport is that they are doomed.

I guess someone would have to look up records and compare to see if this CCHS program is the worst in the state.

I still cannot understand on how the other school Cosby is so good and Newport just stinks.... locals... care to chime in???

  9. Its a lose lose situation for them(CCHS) even with a big gate. Last year was the first year since sometime in the 80's that they would have even had a chance in Basketball and we probably would have been able to getem in Football for the last 4 years (they will argue about that though) Its lose lose cause if they win they were supposed to and if they lose it would be really bad so they don't see it as a good thing for them. After all you are talking about a school with 1200 or more students against one with around 400 , so it really doesnt set up well. Cosby couldnt hold the people that would show for Football or basketball if we played them.

Sounds like the making of a great series IMO. So why not play all the games at Cocke County? I mean I know you lose the "home field" basis of it, but if you guys are as strong against them as stated, then it would be funny if you got them year in and year out. What about playing at neutral sites? There are probably not any near you guys. Or maybe play games like some colleges do where you have some 3 to 1's.... I dunno. Sounds like you would get more fans at either site if you played the actual game then other games anyways. I say play the game and sell tickets in advance! That way your season ticket pakages would go up for people wanting the one big game only. You could technically sell-out all your "season tickets".... has Cosby ever done that before? I know Cocke County hasn't!

  10. You sound like your trying to set someone up to say something they shouldn't /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" Cosby is in Cocke County but its nothing like the same as Newport. Newport is a fine town but Cosby and the people there are proud to be there own little community. There are very OLLLLLDDDD reasons that Cosby and CCHS dont play. You may see it in the future but not now.

Oh in no way am I trying to set up anything or anyone. I mean a lot of schools play each other that are close. Look around the state. With CCHS being in the shape that they are in, seems that playing a game to where you can draw a big gate... especially with a "backyard battle" ring to it would be great for both schools. I am a complete outsider that has family near Newport. Just some of the things I hear up there, even though thay are silly, just do not make sense. What are these old reasons you speak of and why would those reasons prevent a "Civil War" type game from going on now. looks like you people up there are missing the boat, especially when you do not play them in other sports.... thats just silly.

  11. I say we have cocke co. and unicoi co. play and the winner gets home field advantage for their conference in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. We could have cockfighting at the game also to bring in a bigger crowd. An on-site dentist would be available as well. Call Don King. What does everybody think?

    /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

(Jim Mora voice)- UH, playoff's??? You kidding me..... Playoffs?

The meth lab trailer bowl? ..... j/k

Unfortunately these schools get laughed at due to the expense of uncontrollable stuff. I played against CCHS in 1987 and even though my team won the game, it was one of the hardest hitting agressive games I played in that year. Thats what I will always remember about Cocke County.... physical team that will hit you and no it seems that those days will never be back. It's hard to see a program that I once respected go down the tubes... and for what and why?

  12. Cosby is not in newport #1 we are a neighboring community. We play 1A CCHS plays 4A two completely different levels of competition , we are doing well at our level right now , they are having some down years. CCHS wont give a coach enough time to establish anything , we have had the same staff for about 5 years now , I believe that is a big difference too.

Well your both in Cocke Co, so it;s close enough... but I can tell you do not want to be associated in that same breath. Do you think Cosby could beat Cocke County High School? WHy do you guys not play? Kind of stupid if you ask me.... I was wondering the same thing earlier on why CCHS would travel all of the way to Walker Valley to get whipped rather than save money and play a team in their own back yard. My bro-in-law says the CCHS administration is the key and doesn't want to be embarrased by a lower level school. He (bro-in-law) also says Cosby would and could beat CCHS in basketball.

Anyways.......... you guys have a game against Hampton... good luck and thanks for the comments!

  13. WOW, it must be something then... I posted a question on the 4A board asking if CCHS was the wost program in the state and asked why Cosby is traditionally better.

Sorry, but I work in a larger school system and when you compare 1A and 4A together in the same city, the 4A group is better. Looking at past records, both schools have been up and down and had something like 1-9 seasons........ Cosby has rebounded more than CCHS making playoffs and Cocke County has remained in the 1-9 bubble and is expected to go 0-10 this year. So the outlook should say that Cosby has more football talent or gets the better talent in Newport?

  14. I forgot to add 1 more question...

With Cocke County being a 4A school.... their enrollment is close to 1,400 kids.... thats mind blowing when you hear that the school can barely get 30 kids to come out for football.

Just wanted to get more of the numbers out there.

Also, does the school board not compare or care about athletics at the school or is it a Cosby/Cocke County civil war?

  15. My brother-in-laws kid has played there and they have failed to score in the last 3 weeks. The school has historically had solid football programs, but they have not had a .500 record in 12 years.... YIKES! I think in the last 4 or 5 years they have won something like 8 games overall... that worse than the Oakland Raiders. Forecast looks like 0-10 this year.

From other news and posts, I have heard that there are barely 20+ kids playing as we speak. Also in the off-season, the school/coaches ran off former colleges coaches and a former NFL combine coach. With a school that was really good 15-20 years ago... why is there not more going on to help turn around the program? All I hear is "They don't care", "It's the AD's fault", "Not enough talent", etc.........

My family that I speak of lives near the Hamblen/Cocke county line has 2 more boys and they have stated that the next 2 (players) will be going to one of the Morristown schools or even Jeff Co.

Also, why is the other school in town (Cosby) so good? Do the good athletes go to Cosby or do the Newport coaches run them off? Also does other schools like Jeff Co. and South Green get players that do not want to play for CCHS?

    Thanks for all the insight!

  16. I put this same thing on the other thread... looking for some answers....

I did not know that Cosby was in Newport, TN.

Question for Cosby fans.... why are you guys so good and the other school, Cocke County so horrible? Is it coaching? Does Cosby get the better athletes? When you compare the athletic programs of the last few years, Cosby is a whole lot better in both football and basketball. I was just wondering. Doesn't make any sense that within the same city one school excels and the larger school just plain stinks.

Also, there was a pretty good receiver/kick returner that you guys had 3 or 4 years ago. What happened to him? I had heard that the kid could not cut it at a low level college program. I dunno if I believe that or not, but even some of our top athletes here in Chattanooga cannot hang at a college level. Too immature and not willing to put in the hard work it takes.

Good luck Cosby the rest of the year!

  17. I did not know that Cosby was in Newport, TN.

  18. Poor Cocke co.. They have a long way to go.

Thats what they say every year....

WOW just wow. I haven't looked at any of the scores down here for the past few weeks, and it's not surprising.

Last year they were 1-9 and putting points on the board...

    This year.... hello 0-10.

Shame those seniors have to go out on that. I'm sure there are not too many programs/players that only win 2 varsity games in 3 years and go through the coaches they have had. I blame the administration and school board on the SNAFU in Newport.

  19. he wouldnt even take a football out on the field on thursday walk through. he wouldnt even use the word win and if any coach used it he would chew their toe

Now come on, I have heard some things in my day of coaching, but your saying the CCHS coach went through a football practice without a football?

And would never mention anything about winning or win?

I'm sorry.... all of your replies seem to be dead on, but I have never heard anything like that - EVER!

I cannot belive that, maybe some pop warner team, but this is a strong football conference in east TN. Practicing without a football and eliminating the rerm "win" or "winning" does not go on.

I need proof of this from other people, so I will ask around. From all of this junk, it sounds like there is a professional jealously problem in Newport and why on earth would the school board and administration eliminate not 1 but 2 guys that are trying to help a program that can barely win a game.

Are you all meaning to tell me that the school system itself is ok with this losing year in and year out? Sorry, but for me to believe that CCHS has had 4 different football coaches in the last 5 years, coaches not mentioning winning, not practicing without a football, and running a former NFL speed coach and SEC coach out of town.......thats the stuff you make up. I can go along with the 2 guys being asked to leave. That just sounds like stubborn people, but the other things cannot be true.

This is football.... not some sideshow act! Thanks for the laughs and your insight!

  20. Well thank you for your insight as well cchs2. I did not think all of that stuff was made up. Its a shame that the kids that have played have to go out the way they have. I cannot imagine how those 20 seniors you speak of continue to do it. I think what you said about the program's summer lifting speaks volumes about the dedication and discipline of the coaching staff. Just to leave a weight room door open tells me a number of things.... the coaching staff is lazy, there is no discipline or accountability, and it could represent a huge liability if someone was hurt. I will say this, there is no way in hades that we could ever just leave the weightroom freely open. I mean what if small kids came there or someone got hurt? Whoever the athletic directors and principals are... they are foolish to think that they can just allow coaches to leave a faciliy wide open. I cannot believe in this day and time that a school, especially a 4A school would do that.

Anyways, sound like you guys lost 2 quality individuals. Especially the guy with Nfl and pro experience that was willing to train kids for basically free. My main question is... why didn't the head coach Kelly or the athletic director attempt to keep those 2 people? That's what really is mind boggling, especially a program that barely wins one game per year. I would figure that if you wanted to completely turn things around, you try to go and get good people and good coaches. I think the Kelly guy can be a good thing for the program. I heard he was a former small college player and that does help, but how does CCHS figure that a coach like Kelly will stick around if he truely does love football and coaching if the losing seasons pile up? This really sounds like a case where you have some stubborn people behind the scenes and they should be really putting some resources into getting Kelly some quality help. Thanks for the reply, cchs2, it really helped sum up things I hear from friends up there in Newport and Morristown.

  21. i'm from cocke county and i know of the two coaches who are supposed to be great. I know you really don't know them so i'm not bashing you, but the wide receiver coach that has had college experience is a football idiot. Sorry, it would be one thing for someone who has coached in college to evolve and learn new things, but this guy had coached in the 50's and then still taught football like it was the 50's. The kids really weren't learning that much seriously. He wanted a lot more power than he deserved. I know you had just heard these things, and like i said i'm not trying to argue, i had just seen his work at the practice field. Sometimes, no matter how much you used to know, coaches must still evolve and continue to learn. bottom line.

I can understand your logic and even though the coach "appears" old, still a program like CCHS needs that guy's experience as a consultant or even a reference. Yeah the guy may have been around, but he did coach in the SEC for a number of years. What other coach from CCHS can say that? Im just saying....

What about the NFL strength coach? You did not bring him up. I found a few articles from the Newport paper. Sounds like some parents really went to bat for the guy and even to the school board, so he cannot be all that bad... From the second article, it was mentioned that kids who could not afford the training could get it for FREE! WOW!

    Article 1

    Article 2

I have been around a few years and I have seen former NFL players work with kids either through private training and even camps. If the trainer was doing work in the area for almost a year, why did CCHS just up and slam the door? They should have "hired" the guy as a volunteer coach or something.

Anyways, going back to the old coach... it's true that sometimes the game passes some by. It's one thing to hang around... just as Paterno and Bowden. This coach is still coaching in the high school ranks and was able to get a job in the state. I do not think if the guy "was off his rocker" he would have not been hired or even move away. Would it not have been easier to just quit and never coach again?

Oh well... good luck to CCHS and GHS the rest of the season!

  22. you need to have a little more confidence in youre guys there cchs2 thats one of the things they need right now. A little support and confidence in your team and coaches can go a long way.

Support in coaches is the key. I have heard so much out of Newport and maybe they need to hire better coaches to support Kelly instead of young and inexperienced coaches plus retreads that call themselves coaches. I hear CCHS is losing a load of seniors and even their size. So whats next year have in store? If 1-9 or 0-10 is the norm, whats next.... actually scoring points in a ball game? It's really lousy for the kids as well and I'm actually suprised they still even have a team after barely winning 8 games in the past 5 years.... thats pathetic in my book...

CCHS used to have some great players and really put the hat to people back in the early to mid 90's. Yes, everything comes full circle, but there has to be some sort of problem there with something. How can you go over and over losing like that?

I got wind of some news that CCHS had a coach last year that used to be a coach at Ole Miss and Tennessee a long time ago back in the mid 80's. He was even head of recruiting at Tennessee at some point! I heard he left because they would not allow him to teach kids and work with kids in the summer and after practice for running and receiver drills. The coach wanted the head job and they never interviewed him. CCHS later offered him.... (drum-roll please...) THE FRESHMAN JOB! Talk about a smack in the face! I thought this was a load of crap and then I get other news about a former NFL combine strength and conditioning coach that was in the area. I was told that he worked with something like 5 of the football players and the rest were either too lazy or told by the coach to stay away. It does not make sense, but I did see an artice in the Newport paper back in the winter that suggests that the NFL guy was told not to come back. I hear the former college coach left and took another job in Cumberland Co. The NFL guy I think went back to the NFL -dolphins?. If I had those 2 guys in my backyard, I would be twisting their arms to come and make our team better!!!

All in all, Im not bashing CCHS, it may seem like it, but when you have good people that are trying to help, why get rid of them? Truth hurts sometimes... Is it jealously? Pride? I mean, it sounds that way. I live in Chattanooga, so it's hard to get to the bottom of things.... but I cannot put my finger on it when I hear of rumors of lack of player development, lack of a feeder system, lack of community support, etc, etc. I heard from a parent (son has played 2 or 3 years at the school) that this summers workouts at CCHS consisted of the weightroom door being unlocked for the players to come in and sign their names without any supervision! GET REAL... this is not the 80's! Other things like cancelling and not scheduling scrimmages because of fear that players will get hurt gives your players zero confidence. Players need to learn and become battle tested and the last time I checked.... football is a copntact sport. If you get a few players banged up, gues what ol' ball coaches.... it's up to YOU to get others ready!

If this thread suggests anything, maybe Greenville should be the model. They had a couple of losing seasons and they went out and got a coach.... new staff... changed everything almost overnight! It shows that winning can happen and it can happen with the right staff, right work ethic, and the coaches actually doing everything in their power to win and be successful. GHS went from not making the playoffs to winning the conference.... WITH THE SAME PLAYERS! Get your heads out of your arses CCHS... it's time you guys get a new adminstration, new football coaches, and new attitude or maybe it would be best to eliminate football from athletics because word is... women's and men's basketball is the cash cow, so spare me... "We aint got the athletes" crap!

There has got to be some other thing in Newport holding athletics back. Basketball is winning, and other sports are average at best, but football is horrible... one of the worst programs in the state the past 4 years. I think Kelly is right for the job, but ol saying goes... it's hard to fly with the eagle's when your surrounded by turkey's!

  23. According to the Newport paper Coach Crawford has resigned at Cocke County.

Some sources say he was going to be fired and had to a certain day to submit his resignation. I hope this is a good thing for Cocke County. I cannot see how you can NOT improve off two 1-9 seasons. I hear there is no empahsis on the freshman teams there, cancelling JV games because Crawford didn't want his younger son to play, and problems with the parents, and some coaches never coming to practice.

I hope they can find someone that can help them rebuild that program. I know in back in the mid 90's they really took it to our program at their place. Early in the fall I commented about some of the things I had heard about this program. I heard this football team NEVER went live, HIT, or tackled in practice. I also heard that they didn't have conditioning for the players, meaning that they never ran in practice. I heard that they had a coach that coached at Tennessee and Mississippi State, but the head guy didn't allow him to assist or basically wouldnt listen. I also heard that there was a guy in town who used to work for some NFL teams, the Bucs, and the coach told the players that doing agility and conditioning through that guy was a waste of their time and that they would never get better. I dunno, but if these two individuals were around my football program, I would be kissing their tails after going 1-9.

I actually saw this team actually play vs. Crockett and I have never seen a high school team run plays to the short side of the field. I have over 15 years of coaching experience and when you run a twins set to the short side of the field and actually throw the ball in the flats??? Talk about WOW! They just got flat out punished in the Crockett game and looked like their team was in poor shape and they also had a few players go down with injury.

I hope the current players can put the past in the past and forge on! I wanted to respond tho this thread, because I have heard a lot of things coming out of Newport and whether they are true or not, something is going on down there that wasn't right. Good luck to Newport in search of a new coach!
