  1. I am sorry, but I have a problem with this statement, "If here teammates will step out of her way, she brings a different level of ball than what they are used to seeing." I have seen this young lady play and she is good, but I doubt she would be able to win a game by herself. I wouldn't think that a coach would want her teammates to step out of her way. This kind of statement only divides a team instead of uniting one.

  2. Holly crap. Women wanting to fight men? This post has gotten way out of hand. Talk about a bunch of rednecks. Way to go South you've lived up to your reputation. Redneck high at Pactolus at its best. Lots of class.

Please do not label all South fans as rednecks and classless. Every school has fans that seemingly cannot control themselves. I think some people just like to draw attention to themselves, but all they are doing is drawing bad publicity for the school that they support and embarrassing their children. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

  3. Here we go back to the middle school ranks. Who won? The game, not the fight. (How 'bout CH? After this summer who would have predicted early wins over Vance and Robinson? Coach must be good.)

OT game with TN High and South proves either that TN High is not that good or South is not that bad. Or maybe the TN High coach plays too many girls. I'm afraid as others have posted that 1AAA is a little down and not that much better than 1AA if at all.

Will the real Central team please stand up. And since you are lurking WKK, what's up with SH? No one to replace Jasmine?

I must be lost, I thought this was the volleyball forum. Not! I just had to respond to sshsvbdad09. I have always believed that the coach from CH was good. I think that South would benefit from her coaching. Any coach worth their salt would encourage each girl to become a team player instead of totally depending on a select few. I know that there will always be some players that are better than others, but it takes a 5 girls on the floor to make a team. A great coach is one who can take a group of girls with some talent and make them a winning team (example, Barbara Campbell, Brentwood). I do not think this has been the case at South. You do not keep saying that we can not replace so and so and expect the others to have much confidence. I have never liked a one or two girl team at the benefit of the rest of the team. South has some good players, they just need to be reminded of that (go get them GC and AJ). South also has some talented young players coming up the rank and we should be looking forward to some great teams in the years to come.

  4. Does anyone have a schedule for the Jamboree yet? Also, where is it being held at this year?

Big 9 Girls Jamboree Set Tuesday at South

    November 10, 2008

Admission will be $5 per person for the jamboree.

  5. then unless your situation is different and didn't go to inseason Tournaments, it was larger than most schools provided on the ends and at the sides. I can agree with you that the total space should have been larger and was with the configeration of the court Friday. Blackman play was how they have done it for the last few years and was on a smaller area but the crowds were not as large by any means. Some AA and all AAA schools just take more room.

I have been to many in season tournaments and yes your school is larger than most schools; however, we are not talking about just any tournament. The State Championship Tournament should be played on a grander scale. I am not saying anything negative about your school or the volunteers that worked. As I have stated earlier, you were great hosts and did a great job with what was given you. I am saying that TSSAA drop the ball this year, maybe not out of any fault of their own. I hope that they can take the negative feedback that they are receiving and do a better job next year and for years to come. I have not given TSSAA any feedback because I am not sure how to go about this. Can you give me any suggestions? I came this year, not as a parent because my team did not make it this far, but because I felt that I would see some great volleyball players and games. I have read all season on CoachT about some of these players and wanted to see if they were as good as others have said and I can truly say that I was not disappointed. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  6. I want to get others opinions on the bolded section of the article below, from the Kingsport Times-News.

    Bruins thwart Indians

Brentwood reins in D-B??™s state run for second straight year

    By JOHN MOOREHOUSE

    jmoorehouse@timesnews.net

MURFREESBORO ??” Another trip to the state tournament ended with the same result for the Dobyns-Bennett volleyball team.

For the second straight year, the Lady Indians saw their season end at the hands of Brentwood in the TSSAA Class AAA semifinals.

The Lady Bruins defeated D-B 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16 on Friday at Siegel High School. Brentwood, the two-time defending state champion, lost to district rival Independence in the finals. The first-place team from D-B??™s pool, Independence beat Brentwood 25-12, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20.

The Tribe, which finished with a 50-8 record, loses only two seniors from this year??™s squad.

???They have the most heart of any team I??™ve ever coached,??? D-B coach Kathi Shaffer said.

???They never quit. When their backs are against a wall and they should quit, everybody in the world would quit, and they don??™t. I??™m very proud of them.???

The final points of the second game embodied that indefatigable spirit. Brentwood held a 24-19 lead and a two-game advantage seemed inevitable. But a Megan Devine kill forced a Bruins side-out, and D-B proceeded to score another three straight points to make it 24-23 before the Bruins??™ Emily Van Grinsven knocked down a game- ending kill.

The Lady Indians carried over that positive momentum to the third game, taking the lead for good on Devine??™s kill to break a 10-all tie, and winning the game on a successful attack by Meredith Hardy.

Brentwood promptly righted the ship, however. Lady The Bruins never trailed in the fourth and final game, though D-B did force a 13-13 tie. Brentwood reeled off the final six points in succession, with a rowdy crowd of fellow Brentwood students cheering them to victory.

The Brentwood fans unleashed a steady stream of chants and heckles throughout the match. Several teams from the surrounding area, including Independence, also had large cheering sections Friday.

???We have to learn to block it out, but there is an effect,??? said Devine, a target of many of the Brentwood students??™ chants. ???Since we??™re the farthest away, we pretty much have nobody from our school to come support us. But we have our parents and they??™re great. That helps us out a lot.???

The cozy confines of Siegel put the fans much closer to the action. Students from both Brentwood and Independence were able to get right on top of players from opposing teams as they dropped back to serve ??” a luxury not provided at the previous state tournament venue, Middle Tennessee State.

???It??™s a real advantage,??? Shaffer said. ???Our following was awesome and they made a lot of noise. But playing in this area, all these teams (from) Nashville and Chattanooga and Cookeville that are an hour and a half away, what an advantage. They brought busloads. It helps.???

Brentwood (45-20) got plenty of support, but advanced to the finals thanks to its defense.

???They have the best defense I??™ve ever seen,??? said Devine, who finished with a team-high 18 kills to go with 36 digs. ???They just dug up everything.???

???Their defense is phenomenal,??? Shaffer agreed. ???Very little hits the floor and they pass perfectly, so they get to run a lot of offense. And they??™re quick.

???Quick is effective. They didn??™t have their usual big gun that??™ll just take your head off, but they were very efficient.???

Sophomore Lauren Kaufman paced the Brentwood attack with 21 kills and nine blocks, two of them solo. Van Grinsven added a dozen kills.

Hardy contributed 16 kills and four blocks for the Tribe. Sarah Taylor, one of the two seniors, reached for 49 digs. Jamie Rutledge added 10 kills to go with 43 assists, often dishing it successfully whether the incoming pass was good or bad.

???That??™s what Jamie does,??? Shaffer said. ???I worry because I??™m afraid she??™s going to get a hankering to run cross country. It might be less running, with all we do.???

After last year??™s loss to Brentwood, D-B held a team meeting that lasted nearly an hour. The Lady Indians emerged from the locker room much more quickly this time ??” and with a distinct goal already in mind.

    ???We immediately said, ??

  7. I did ask the gate - even before you suggested it & they told me they were not sure who was getting the money. I have taken up lots of money, lots of games, lots of years & I NEVER took up money that I didn't know who and what it was for.

Oh well, I'm not complaining about paying to park - well worth $5.00 to see some great volleyball - I just feel since it was my money & I paid I deserve to know where it's going.

No I don't really understand why Blackman was chosen over another location, just because it's been done a certain way in the past does not mean a change could work better. I think Siegel did a great job - I didn't go over to Blackman this year, but in the past they have also done a great job. I think the state tournament should be held @ a college venue. The girls deserve a college type atmosphere. I don't even have a daughter that plays, I just love the game & would like to see volleyball get some positive attention from T$$AA.

I also asked who got the $5.00 for parking and got the same answer. This is what TSSAA told us to charge and this is what we are doing. Although I only went to Siegel, I felt like they were very gracious hosts and did a great job with crowd control. However, one of the problems was allowing the fans to be that close to the players while they were serving. I am sure this would not be allowed in any other sport whether kicking a field goal or shooting a foul shot. I think that the girls showed great poise in this situation. Also, playing in such small confines, could be very dangerous, as I saw several close calls with girls chasing balls and almost hitting the concrete wall. I do agree with classact and with many others who stated that the girls deserve better than what TSSAA provided them this year. This is something that the teams have worked for all year and to have to play under these conditions should not be tolerated from the volleyball community.

  8. I'm with you Big Daddy, the ref's were horrible the whole time.I was told by one that they took 2 refs from each district and some had never seen play at this fast pace.Maybe they should just let the ones from 11-AAA do the job

because their accustom to it.Many of our refs showed up to watch Brentwood and Red-Bank on Thursday night and when bad calls were made it was funny to watch the expressions on their face. As usual the T$$AA doesn't care ,they just want that cash at our teams expense. I think the Page match was the worst I've seen. The girls fight to a fifth game and have their season ended by incompetent score keepers and officials.

I have to disagreed with you about the referees being horrible the whole time. I was there for most of the games and although there were some bad calls made and calls that were not made, I felt like the referees did a good job. I disagree with letting the official keep the book and also the scoreboard (if this was the case?). As a person who kept the book for my team, it is really difficult to keep up with the points played in the book and then trying to add points to the scoreboard. Also, as a scorekeeper, we would always confer with each other about what we had versus what the scoreboard showed. In my opinion, the score in Page/Boyd fifth game was not correct; did this cost Page the match, we will never know.

I am sure you would like to think that you have the best referees, but I wonder how many times the fans from 11-AAA complained about bad calls during your season. I can assure you that the referee from District 1-AAA is accustomed to seeing volleyball played at a fast pace. Don't you think it only fair that each district have the opportunity to have referees at the State Tournament?

  9. East Tennessee is going to be well represented in the State Tournament. DB, Morristown East, and Farragut are very solid teams with some great players. Thank you, Morristown East for being gracious hosts for the Region 1 tournament. I had a chance to see Hallie Vannoy play and she is the real deal. She would be a great addition, defensively or offensively, to any team that she plays for. #8, Cara Gregg, for Farragut is a good all around player, but I especially enjoyed watching her swing at the ball and putting it down the line. DB plays great as a team, with each player contributing. As a setter, you would be hard press to find one better than Jamie Rutledge who is just a sophmore. She runs her team's offense well. Meredith Hardy, a sophmore, is hard to defend at the net. Megan Devine is a powerful hitter. I wish the best to each one of these teams. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Although the Lady Rebels are not continuing, I look for some great things from them in the years to come. I would like to say how very proud of this team that I am. They always represented themselves as ladies off and on the court. Thank you to my daughter for the last 7 years. I have enjoyed every minute of sharing this time with you! /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

  10. This is my first time on Coach T. I have to chuckle at the popularity contest that goes on between parents in the "Players to Watch" category. Maybe I am wrong, but is is not the parents of these children/volleyball players who post these messages? I do see value in that because parents are suppose to support and praise their children, but compare these Tennessee volleyball players to players from Texas, Calf, Illinois..how would they match up?

I am a parent, but not of the girls that I posted (Cara Gregg, Meredith Hardy, and Payton Tipton). My daughter has played against all of these players in school competition and tournaments. I am very proud of my own daughter and always compliment her on a job well done, but I have always told her to do her best and other people will praise her. I usaully have a close up view, as I keep score for her team; therefore, I have a pretty good concept of how girls play. I can not say how they compare with other players from outside Tennessee, but I feel like the State of Tennessee produces some great volleyball players that have gone on to compete on the college level.

  11. I do know that most of the players at Dobyns-Bennett play club ball, and have for sometime, 5th or 6th grade to present. From what I understand, girls from the other schools do as well, especially Sullivan South, Sullivan Central, Science Hill, and Tennessee High. A lot of these girls intermingle on these clubs teams. The middle schools in Kingsport, Ross N. Robinson and John Sevier, always have a long tradition of being competitive and the programs are well funded with quality parent involvement. I have had friends coach the local Kingsport club team that, from my experience, has two teams, marked A and B, talent is about even, made up of girls from both middle school teams, and they do travel. Colonial Heights Middle School has had quality teams over the years, one of the feeder middle schools into Sullivan South. They always challenge Robinson and Sevier from the Middle 8 Conference title. From the way I see it, without these club/travel teams and quality feeder programs, the top teams from the Big 9 wouldn't be nearly as competitive as it is. From #1-#6, there are all girls who can play and do year round.

Coach Hyatt, whom you reference as the coach who came from a nearby small college, left Milligan College in Elizabethton to take the Science Hill coaching job. Prior to coaching at Milligan, Coach Hyatt was the head coach at Dobyns-Bennett, where her daughter played and prospered. Dobyns-Bennett's current coach, Coach Schaffer was coaching at Sullivan East at the time. Upon Hyatt's leaving Dobyns-Bennett, Coach Schaffer was hired to take over Lady Indian??™s volleyball and she has never looked back. I personally have never been more satisfied with the quality, performance, character, and product she has put on the court in my Indians.

The prep golfer question you leveled I cannot answer. I do know, however, that one of the main hitters and better players on the Sullivan South team plays golf this year for the Rebels while also leading her volleyball team. Quite the athlete she is.

There are four club teams in the East Tennessee area that I am familiar with: Kingsport Volleyball Club which is for girls that only attend Kingsport City Schools; NETVC and TEVA which have girls from East Tennessee and Virginia; CHVC which have girls that feed into Sullivan South. There are some very dedicated people in this area who want to see the game of Volleyball grow in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. I do know that most of the girls (16U), that play on the Dobyns-Bennett team were coached during the club season by ETSU coach, Lindsey Devine. Her daughter plays on the team and is a very good player.

As far as the prep golfer, no he is not any kin to the volleyball coach at South. The hitter that was referred to on the South team is only a sophmore and she is also a great basketball player.

  12. The libero for Cleveland is Payton Tipton. I have had the opportunity to coach her in club and she is an amazing player and she is only a sophomore!

Thank you for letting us know her name. I am sure that we will continue to see come great playing from her in the next two years. Most of the time we hear alot about hitters and setters, but as we all know that a great offense begins with the back row players. I do not want to jinx her, but other back row players could take lessons from her as far as always being ready and covering the floor so well. /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

  13. #8 OH for Farragut, Cara Gregg. A very hard hitter who plays all around.

Meredith Hardy, a sophmore from Dobyns Bennett, is a force to be reckon with in the middle.

I was impressed with the libero from Cleveland High School at the Pick O Dixie tournament. She was always on the move, digging up hard hit balls, and covering the blockers.

  14. Don't give up. You may have to fight a little harder foir newspaper, etc. While it is a small paper, your local Oak Ridge paper is watched quite a bit from fans all over the state since it is on line. We look at it every time we can and it does not carry enough VB but I can assure you it is read. Get them on the ball to start carrying your Tournament at least. It is one of the top news organizations that we look for for VB news in that area. Let the Knoxville newspaper not carry preps or the area high schools. VB will find the right paper to communicate.

  16. Well it's over and we are worn out. You would think that after years of school and club ball that we as parents would be adjusted to spending long days in gyms but it still drains you and we don't even play. On top of that you have to play in gyms that feel like sauna??™s...! My dream for next year is a gym with an AC!! The second court at Red Bank was just the worse ever. I really hate it for the teams that had to play in that for two days straight. Now for the volleyball.

Some other thoughts of mine were what happened to S. South? Did that loss to DB (just before the TX) take everything out of them? From what I have heard and read that was one of the best volleyball matches every played up in Kingsport. But South just didn't have it this weekend.

Losing their starting MB, Grace Collins, to an shoulder injury Friday night could have been a key to how South played in the tournament. I am happy to report that Grace's injury was not serious and she will be back. Losing a key player to an injury would take a team some time to adjust. However, the girls regrouped and came back to win all three games in their pool on Saturday morning. We faced Red Bank in our first game in tournament play losing 25-17 and 25-19. Red Bank played some great volleyball after struggling in their pool that morning. After watching some of the teams at this tournament, I can say that East Tennessee, the Knoxville area, and the Chattanooga area will be well represented at the State Tournament come the last of October.

The Sullivan South and DB game was well worth your money, as it went 5 games before a winner could be declared. Sullivan South took the first game 26-24. DB came back and took the second game 26-24. Sullivan South struggled in the third game with DB taking it 25-14. Sullivan South then came back and took control of the fourth game and won 25-20. The final game was a barn burner with both teams worthy of the win, but DB came out on top and won 21-19. All the girls on both sides of the court gave it their all and the crowd was treated to some of the best volleyball that has been seen in quite some time. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  18. You have done a great job and we appreciate it. We are only here to serve the Schools and provide information for fans. The only thing you have to do now when we set these up is to post the scores in on your computer or call Coacht and give him the results. At that time, the scores will be available to fans all over the state or for that matter anyone in the world(I think), who has access to CoachT.com. As you know or may not, CoachT has a following internationally and I suspect are from Military personnel who want a little home flavor. So thanks and we look forward to seeing the results of the Tourney from Kings College.
