  1. Maybe Moseley should have worked on finishing his shots as much as Berz did on defending them. Sitting in my house back here in Chattanooga last night I was surprised the ref didn't call it earlier. It was clear the FR wrestler was shooting not to score, but to hold on to the leg. Congrats to Berz for being a one time placer and state champion.

  2. upset? possibly a miracle. but as we all know, anything is possible in the heated baylor-mccallie environment. I could potentially see where Mccallie will get bonus points while baylor has seemed to lose matches or slipo by opponents due to the lack of bonus points. it'll be interesting to see where everyone lines up, and if any shuffling ocurs in each lineup. Cant wait to hear results! lets go thundercats!

So it appears there was a "miracle" last night. Props to Mr. Berz for beating Craig in the rematch. Also great work from Mr. Brunner catching Westbrooks and pinning him. Baylor came to win. the bonus points did not come at 113, 120 or 285, so shout out to the baylor wrestlers for showing up and not letting that happen. I think we all look forward to a possible remtach next week in Nashville.

  3. Let's get some predictions started, I honestly have no idea what to say so I'll let y'all do the predictions.

Correct me if I'm wrong on these starting line ups

    103 Murphy v.s Westbrooks

    113 Canada? v.s Elsea

    120 Eady vs Connell

    126 Watson v.s Davis

    132 Bruner v.s T. Westbrooks

    138 Sutherland v.s Ward

    145 Popp v.s Kent

    152 Cate v.s Halleron

    160 Huff v.s McCroskey

    170 Craig vs. Berz

    182 Bodine vs Hoodenpyle

    195 Norred v.s ?

    220 Seaberg vs Cook

    285 Payne v.s Youngblood

Who is this Powell kid at 113 for Baylor? Will Watson bump to wrestle Westbrooks? Does Clements fit in the Baylor lineup with Popp going down to 138? Will Baylor have all their starters back? Did McCallie find a 195? Among those questions, there are a lot of toss up matches even if the competitors have already wrestled, such as 103, 132, 160, 170, 220?

Can we get some team score predictions?

  4. McCallie has lost more quality wrestlers, than maybe any team in the country to other schools. For example:

Houston Clements-Baylor (even though he is out for the year)

    Michael Murphy-Baylor

    Michael Hooker-Father Ryan

    T.J. Satterfield- William Blount

Blaike Henry- Soddy Daisy by God

    Cory Cobb- No longer wrestling

    Daniel McClure- No longer wrestling

Say what you want about why these kids left McCallie or left the school completely, but if McCallie still had all of these kids, who are all state placers, they would be ranked very high this year. Mike Newman has been left with something that is hard to fix, a team that consistently loses good wrestlers after every season. He will get these boys back on top in the next couple of years, so I guess you could say they are rebuilding.

  5. FRANKLIN - With a strong wrestling tradition that stretches nearly eight decades, Baylor and first year head coach Ben Nelson added more hardware to the already crowded wrestling trophy case with a D-II State Duals wrestling title by defeating cross-state rival Christian Brothers, 27-25 Saturday night.

Competing in the three-ring circus better known as the United States Marines Dual Wrestling Championships at Williamson County Ag Expo Center, Baylor joined Bradley Central (D-I AAA) and Chattanooga Central (D-I A/AA) as champions, after Knox. Webb claimed the third annual D-II Small School Invitational.

Christian Brothers won more matches – eight to six – but Baylor gained more bonus points – nine to two – on the strength of pins from Stuart Doster, John Mackey and Zach Watson. Christian Brothers had a pair of major decisions worth one point each from Nate Rupiper (171) and Kaleb Baker (135).

“Our guys wrestled hard and I am proud of their effort,†said Christian Brothers coach Chris Lewis. “We won more matches, but didn’t get the bonus points we needed and one team point penalty also hurt.â€

Christian Brothers lost a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the 160-pound match which gave Baylor a 9-5 lead.

What Might Have Been: Without the loss of one team point, Baylor would have led by five, 27-22 instead of six (27-21), going into the final match at 135.

Baker then would have needed a technical fall worth five points or a pin worth six for the team title (Christian Brothers would have won the match in case of a team score tie due to winning more overall matches), but that was all just discussion since any tie would have gone to Baylor with the unsportsmanlike conduct as the first tie breaker.

With the match starting at 140, Baylor put six points on the board first on the strength of a fall by senior captain and three-time state champ Stuart Doster.

But the Purple Wave from Memphis won five of the next six weights to lead 15-9 through 215.

Defending state champ John Mackey brought the Red Raiders even at 15 with a fall at 285.

One in a string of key match-ups came at 103 as eighth grader Cole Holloway parlayed a first period takedown into a 3-2 win against 2010 state medalist Nick Gray to give Baylor an 18-15 advantage.

“Going in, we thought that 103 weight class could be a swing match and that proved to be true,†said Baylor head coach Ben Nelson. “Cole, Nick and McCallie’s Adam Connell are three excellent wrestlers and will battle it out at 103 in a couple of weeks.â€

Coach Lewis then shuffled his lineup and won at 112 with backup John David Santi and moved cadet All-American Tate Robinson up to 119 to beat 2010 state champ Brandon Brunner for a 21-18 lead.

But Baylor countered with a fall by Zach Watson at 125 and a decision by Alex Manley at 130 to clinch the title.

A strong Christian Brothers team takes the runner-up trophy for the second straight year, falling short of a much sought after title by one match each year.

Baylor has won a duals or traditional state title in five of the six decades since schools first competed for a team state championship in 1961.

Baylor has won state traditional titles in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 2000’s and this decade, with seven duals crowns coming in the new millennium.

“Not a bad run,†said coach Nelson, who has now followed Red Raider coaches Luke Worsham and Jim Morgan with a TSSAA crown, while Baylor coaches V.O. Jones and Whitey Urban brought home city championships in the 1930s and 1940s.

State Traditional is Next: Baylor, Christian Brothers and 14 other D-II schools will meet again, in two weeks (Feb. 4-5) just off I-65 for the 50th anniversary of the state wrestling traditional tourney.

If wrestling at the traditional is at the quality level that was seen this weekend, then it should be two great days of wrestling.

did anyone else notice how many stalling calls baylor had?

  6. Why should they not have the right to change if they do not agree? And why should there be a penalty?

And your answer is to "man up".

And then you answer the reference to double elimanation with, "it should have been in the format in the beginning".

I guess my answer that should be acceptable to you is this, tranfers should have no penalty and it should have been that way in the beginning, which it probably was before they install this policy.

Not a great argument and it has no intellectual qualities to the thought process, but what the heck, right? Enough said.

I hate to reply to you, especially in this topic because it has absolutely nothing to do with what is going to happen at the school behind WalMart friday night but...

The whole point of the split between public and private in the TSSAA was to make it fair for everyone. If you argue against that then you have no business being on this forum. If a kid that switches from public to private has to sit out, then a kid that switches from private to private should have to sit out too, its that simple. No matter What Clements reason was, no matter your opinion on his decision, he knew the consequences and continued to do what he thought was best for him, and his career in high school athletics. Transfers should indeed have penalties if you want everything to be fair. If not almost every high school sport would be corrupt with recruiting, violations and money. No one wants to see money as an issue in high school sports, it's about the kids doing what they love because they love it. And if they want to do something they love at another school, they should know they will have to sit out. It's life, it's full of punishments, you can't go running around doing what you want freely and have nothing hold you back ever.

Anyway back to the match that all these kids have circled since November. At the Slam, Jake Anderson of McCallie decisioned Bullard of Baylor at 189 this weekend. In other match ups containing these two schools, Martino pinned bodine in less than a minute. Lets get some more predictions, if you want to talk about transfers, take it somewhere else.

  7. Watching rankings all year and results from tourneys it looks like neither Baylor or mccallie have a true 189 lber this year

Rumor has it that the school behind walmart is bringing out nic bullard to wrestle at 189 in this dual, the kid hasnt wrestled all year.

    103 Connell pin Holloway

    112 Elsea Dec Eady

    119 Brunner pin Boyd

    125 Ward dec Watson

    12-6 Boys in Blue

    130 Reece dec Westbrook

    135 Manley Fall Kent

    140 Doster maj. dec Cobb

    145 Hooker Dec Popp

    19-18 Tights no longer

    30-26 Boys in Blue

    215 Cook dec Starnes

    285 Mackey dec Youngblood

    Final: McCallie 33 Baylor 29

  8. Here are my predictions for the dual that will be held January 29th at 6:00 on the McCallie Campus.

    McCallie 33-24

  9. For all you wrestling rules gurus out there, is there anything about shoes coming off during a match similar to the situation where a kid has a headgear that keeps coming loose. In a close finals match yesterday, a McCallie kid's shoe came off twice. As I recall, both times I think he was on bottom---it did not come off in a shot-----and I don't think it came off from the other wrestler grabbing hold of it either. Both times it just seemed to slip off, like maybe it was not tied tight enough. The match was stopped both times to let him put it back on. I realize that the head gear is a little bit different because it is a safety factor. The shoe doesn't seem to be the same issue . So could the ref just have let the match continue until it came to a natural break? It seemed to me that on both occasions the opposing wrestler lost his advantage by having the break and then going back to center match. If it were to have continued happening, could a penalty point be awarded? I have seen refs tell a kid after a loose headgear has become a problem to get one from someone else or it would cost him a point.

the person would be one Michael Hooker. And this is not the first time this has happened. Not the second, third or forth. And no one is doing a thing about it. Yesterday in that match, the 2nd time it happened, he did it himself.

Some of the tactics used by this school's kids are way out of control, and the school's admin needs to take a long hard look at their wrestling program. From blatant head butts, to the constant kicking off of one's own shoe. Among other things that goes on. I can't believe for the life of me, that anyone would want their school's name put out there like this.

    Ridiculous!

Wow... You sir are blaming a school for what their wrestlers do. Do you think Coach Gordo teaches his kids to do this in the room. As I recall, from watching the match online, the second time Hooker's shoe came off they made him take injury time to put it back on. Why are you taking credit away from a kid that fought hard to win this tourney? Dont tell me that Hooker is the only kid in the state who has had his shoe come off twice in one match. As for the Head Butting that just comes from a wrestlers will to win. Any kid that has been on the mat, and wants to win, will go out there hard and try and beat their opponent no matter what. If it takes a little bump of the head every now and then then they will do it. If I was taught correctly it takes two heads to butt, and both heads absorb the impact. There are several other schools out there who get away with yanking fingers back one at a time to break a grip (Baylor) and head butting, every team gets away with some stuff. Of course nobody gets away with biting, but that stuff just comes from a kids will to win. After the kid gets punished for biting like Alex Manley did he should get applauded for wanting to win so bad, that he will taint his reputation to do something like that.

  10. After two straight sivision loses the last one being a heartbreaker I think the big blue will pull this one off for number 12. If Trent lusk plays the way he did tonight it will be a blow out. The offensive coordinator for mccallie really stepped it up tonight in gettin his offense ready to play. I got a chance to watch the MBA vs Baylor game last week on the MBA network and Baylor didn't look as good as the could have looked, overthrown balls, dropped passes and they don't have a kicking game like MBA does.can the red raiders make use if their 15 day off an make it a competition like we saw two years ago when te rivals played over at heywood stadium. This is the year is what the Baylor faithful are saying. But is it? Can the big blue defense lead by senior Nolan woody stop the taleted and wicked fast running back of sam Williams who hasn't really come up big for the red raiders do to injury this season. Can the secondary for mccallie containing the pritchett triplets cover matthew oellrich and the other baylor wide receivers? Will Jacob huesmann be the player Baylor has been looking for for the past eleven years? Can mccallie not allow Baylor to play on a short field like bylor got to play on because of turnovers against tyner? It's the color battle of blue and red. It is the smell of hate that will fill heywood stadium in one week. It is the car flags that control the whole city. It's the pep rallys. It's the alumni coming back to see if the big blue cn beat Baylor for another year. It's the passionate hate for the other team. It's fathers brainwashing their sons or daughters to hate the color of the rival team. It's the t shirts. It's the talk ofthe town. It's the best week of my life. It's the most critical game for both teams. It's what can make or break a season. It's what can make or break a career. It's the greatest rivalry in Tennessee. It is Baylor-McCallie and it starts NOW!

  11. Public- Private. Fight for a chance to get in- given the opportunity. Ronnie Carter was one of the men to decide that the TSSAA would split up the private and public schools. And because of this he should be ashamed. Mr. Carter was honored before the national anthem at the State Wrestling Tournament yesterday. To see all the private schools standing up and clapping for him shows just how clueless these people are. Do they not remember the REAL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP where you had to fight in your region through a whole tournament in fact, to get the opportunity to wrestle in the State tournament. I was with a man who sat down when they announced roddie's name. While he should not have done that MR. Carter still doesn't deserve a standing ovation. The public schools wanted to be split from the private because they do not get the same opportunities that the private schools get such as, coaches, money, venues etc. but Ronnie should have kept them equal. How great would it be to see the divisions reuntied in one great tournament. Where you have to place in your region to compete for the state titled. Where rankings arnt given to you based on your record that year. YOu have to earn your ranking. Ronnie should have shown more backbone to the public schools. I just wish our kids would have the same opportunities we had when we were in highschool. I'm disgusted. You should never be given something straight up, you should earn it. In my book there are no State champions, only Division champions and those division champions can thank Mr. Ronnie Carter for that.

  12. Im disgusted that you guys would eve nsay he "manufactured a vomit." Obviously you have never had flu like symptoms. I will admit that hooker lost and stuart is a good friend of mine but really "manufactured a vomit." Thats absurd. And come one its not like he is the first to throw up in a match before. You don't yell and scream at the refs to warn him for stalling because he is one the side throwing up. The CBHS fans didn't yell and scream when zach was bleeding, nor should they. It really shows a lack of class when you harass a kid for throwing up when he in fact had thrown up all wednesday thursday and friday. HE did not attend school on wednesday because he was sick. I'm not making excuses for hooker at all. Stuart was better prepared in every position, he did not show any nerves and he showed up to win the fight in this one. Hw wanted it more. To win a state champinship you have to want it. you don't luck into it because the guy is sick. Stuart did not luck into it. HE won it fair and square. To think that you guys believe we are making excuses saying that he is sick is crazy. And once again if you yell at a kid for throwing up in a middle of a match you really are classless. Hooker came out under flu like symptoms and still made it to the state championship, which he should realize is a great accomplishment. But he did lose to Doster. Thats that. Baylor wrestling fans can you show just a little more class. Please?

  13. Beware of Counterfeit tickets for this match that have been going around like no other. They are everywhere even for baylor fans.

cant wait till tomorrow rivalry renewed and it will be an everlasting hate. and im serious baylor is stupid to think that there wouldnt be counterfeit tickets.

  14. 103-Eady vs Ward: Ward Pin

    112-Watson vs Westbrooks: Watson Pin

119-Manley vs Ray: Ray win bye 1 in match of the night

    125-Doster vs Hooker: Doster win

So far match score is tied at 9-9

130- Hayes vs Mclure: Hayes win

135- Starvrum vs Clements-Cobb: Starvrum win

140- Cate vs Duncan: Duncan pin

145- Hayes vs Stone: Stone win (gotta have some upsets in rivalry matches)

    18-15 Mccallie

152- Baylor ??? vs Martino: Martino win

160- Glascock vs Henry: Henry win (both guys have struggled this year im pickin the 8th grader)

171-Baylor??? vs Condrey: I HAVE NO IDEA (condrey is very inconsistent)

    189-Helton vs Cronan: Helton pin

215- Mackey vs Moore: Moore in a close one

285- Watson vs Satterfield: Watson Pin

Final score: Baylor 27- McCallie 27 with the exception of the match at 171

    Well it??™s a close one??¦

  15. I don't think brackets will be up until Friday morning. MAYBE late Thursday. Points system meeting is going on right now. I got slipped a tip- looks like we'll see a match-up between Hooker and Hayes in the semis. Pay your money people- 11:00am Saturday is going to be a good one!!!!!

12:00 pm friday on mccallies website

  16. Alright guys, how in the world can stuart doster be ranked ahead of Michael Hooker. Hook is a hoss. Dont get me wrong i have known stuart all my life and if we ranked them on personality stuart would be first in any weight class. And i can guarentee that at 103 Alex Ward from McCallie will place in state.

  17. Hopefully we will put on a good show. Last week we just sturggled in the second half. We just don't seem to have any emotion in the second half. Brentwood game out and ran some sprint jogs out of half time and we we just sitting their watching them on the sidelines. Which is exactly what happened in the state championship of 2006! And two weekes ago we gave up 26 points in the 4th quater and lost to Franklin. I just hope that the coaches have figured out that we need to come out of the locker room after half time and RUN. To get the muscles moving, and adreneline pumping. We cant afford to play the second half like we have all season long.
