  1. I think this one will be close and the one who makes the fewest mistakes will claim victory. SC, plagued by penalties in past games, really improved this past week. SC has turned around and are playing much better football. They have their confidence back and would like to avenge the loss of last year. Plus DB will be on SC's turf this year. It's too close to call but I'm rooting for the Bears. Who are the players to watch for DB?

The defense is our strenth. We are small but get after the offense. Our down linemen make a lot of plays. In the big games against the best teams this year, our overall defense has been the star.On the other side of the ball,it's been hit and miss. The QB has looked great at times and not so great at times. Our running backs and receivers have been the same. Blocking against the better teams has not been up to par.It will be interesting to see if we can open the holes up from here on out. I hope that we don't get conservative about passing, because we could have ran 20 different guys last week for a hundred yards against Elizabethton.

  2. Greeneville, MoWest, MoEast, WB, Oak Ridge, Maryville...moving out a little Ooltewah, Riverdale, Smyrna, Ravenwood.

Gate City, Powell Valley, Richlands in Va

The MBA games were very exciting...I would like to see some new opponents maybe go out of state.

Personally, I wish they would limit the local teams to 1 per year and rotate that 1 game around the area. There is nothing to be gained by playing 3 games vs. the smaller local schools every year...it's a lose lose situation. If DB wins there is a built in excuse of a bigger school should win every time, and if they lose it's a HaHa you can't beat the little schools. IMO

If we are playing WB,OR along with our region. A couple of local 4A schools makes it something for everybody to talk about.Going out of state would be nice too. It sounds special when a team with ALA.GA or SC is behind the name.

  3. Evaluate this...Cyclone 2nd and 3rd teams outscored DB's Friday night and they did again last night. JV lost 20-18. Didnt see the game but I'm guessing it was similar to what has been said about all prior JV games. The Cyclone coach figured out who was going to run the ball %75 of the time and keyed on him. Lynn Garden Pee Wee coaching at its best. Not bad for an old guy just sitting in the stands watching some of the worst coaching since the time they had a DB "glory day" QB coaching DB football. (He does radio now) Sorry, seen you Dads hanging out at practices for 20+ years. I can evaluate just fine on Friday nights. #47 plays good for a Soph. but not as a starter for a 5-A school. He is either %100 or %0 depending on a lucky blitz. Rotate #9, #45 etc. into his spot. They can do the same on the blitz, plus hold their own when needed. Lord dont take the biggest LB (#18) out on short down situations. The OR runningback is sending the DB game film to colleges, especially when he ran to his left. #10 is one of the best athletes on the field, IF not the best. Needs more consistant QB playing time, not the QB shuffle in the middle of downs. For him to be really good, he needs a consistent offensive scheme to practice. The option from under center was not the game for the first 3 games. Not much of an option from shotgun. #7 will be fine now that they have an offensive scheme that fits the athletes on the field. Next year will be better, much better, just look at the young guys (JRs) now getting the playing time and there should be even more JRs. on the field. Not too sure about your assesment of the younger classes, 2-2 JV and the Freshman horse has left the barn for greener pastures!

I agree with some things such as playing #9 more at LB. There are good seniors and juniors that could help more as the year rolls on.They take #18{CK} or whoever is playing the middle and replace them with another down lineman when they go to a 4 man front. The JV doesn't have a pure half back on the team.40){DS} is a solid Dogback and a good slot type receiver with big hands and good size.He is playing where last years halfback moved out of state. The freshman horse you are talking about, will do just fine for years to come, and 40 will be a big help at as well.If you watch some of the JV games, you will see some of the guys that played on friday against our guys. The JV has some nice athletes that will help the team over the next two years. The freshman played an undefeated JC team to the end without CS.

  4. Muffed punt returns have been a DB tradition. Just ask Skunky, he will recall a few. I'm sure they have told all of the guys to stay away, sometimes it is hard to coach smarts into a player. Did you not see Coach B chew him for trying to pick up a rolling punt? Of course they left him in. Any other kid, out of the game. He has a long way to go to be a good QB next year. GREAT talent, but a good QB has to have it between the ears to make good decisions. Cant make the read for the option, does his best when he keeps it and runs. Everybody is all excited about the playoffs after beating a terrible Cyclone team with no offense. The defense is good, not great. A good running team will eat the right side up. If not for Bateman holding down the side at DE it would be off to the races. #24 is a good playmaker on offense, but DB he aint! He looked silly trying to grab the jersey Friday night, kind of like UT. That was not his first time trying to tackle like that. #47 is too little and too weak. He makes tackles because of blitzing, never filling the hole like a LB. Always knocked into Hawkins county when the run is directly at him. Holt needs to let the neighbor lovefest with him go before it costs DB a game. GC still had 5-6 starters in on D in the 4th. That will bite him one day. The stuff about JS having a sore ankle, hogwash. That is just how he runs, side to side, never head on. Amazing, totally amazing what under center does with rotating backs coming in, JL and CS for a couple of plays then LT and JS with fresh legs. It will serve them well on D to have a rest too. #7 just doesnt have the comfort to run a shotgun every play. Now that DB has the line huddle, just add a few backs and they would have a complete huddle. No confusion of the play and faster. 2nd and 3rd team running plays in got plays off faster. That has hurt them already this year and will again. After the TN H game someone talked about how good the kicking game is for DB.??? The kicker is getting stronger now that they are scoring and he has a chance to kick off, but that is the only sign of improvment. The extra points stink. The hold looks bad and the kick just clears the crossbar. Never seen so many blocked extra points half way into a season. Although DB scored on the 4th down, that would have been a good chance for the kicker to practice a field goal during a game. DB will need that later this season. Best part of the kicking Friday night was DB didnt have to punt. The prior game was 5 punts for an ave. of 16 yards. That too has hurt in the past and will again. A running back that finally runs head on is not enough to save this team. Too many weak areas that will end the season early. Too many turnovers. IF they do well in the 2nd season it will only be because the entire state is down. Teams of yester year would have killed this team including Science Hill teams (HA!). Sorry, 14-0 at halftime is not impressive. DB wins the next 3 against weak teams and hangs on to beat Science Hill.

I think a lot of what you wrote is right on.A lot of people have talked about some of the same things you touched on . Turnovers will kill you,and our special teams are special in a need help kind of way. I think we have the team however that can fix these things.I allways go back to how good we were on offense at WB.Man,we hold onto the ball and take care of those " special " teams ? Having the team and doing it,time will tell. The coaches and kids will do their best over the next couple of weeks to come out strong.Roll Tribe

  5. Sevier County won the State in the late 90's and as you enter, you are reminded. This is a team you should respect nomatter what their record is .We have not played a first half on offense yet.Last week we were way to slow in getting it cranked again,we should have been up by 35 when the Queen was walking off the field. The 400 plus yards we got on the ground could be very bad if we are not careful.I wish we could line up against WB,OR and run like we did friday, that would be great !! I don't care who ran the ball, we were moving people out of the way and all the time coach put in on the sweep, paid of greatly.Roll Tribe

  6. Right on.That was #15.But it could have been any of a bunch of players. That position should not be taken lightly. With all the speed that DB has a number of players can play back there, but you have to be smart about catching the ball and letting it roll. With players from opposing team all around you and in your face tends to put pressure on you.Catching the ball and holding on is the trick.

Speaking of numbers, this was the first time that we were"100"strong.I think when the kids get back to work next week, they should have an extra skip in their step. The coaches rewarded many kids for nearly a year of hard work.If many fans would see what this entire team went through during the Jan.spring drills, they would be thankful as GC and his staff are by rewarding the whole team.If some players didn't get into the game,I know they tried, and even got a delay of game doing it.

  7. Game managment and Production the same thing? Well, not really how I define them. But I get you. Many, many teams, just need a QB that can manage the game and run the O. DB certainly has that. Plus, he does give production, making completions and the occasional scamper. Dropped balls are not his fault, as Skunk pointed out. We all might be talking different if those had been catches. One of my county buddies, who has watched the Wake Forest summer QB/WR camp the past two years, said with the stud receivers that attend that camp, Ring looked like a all-stater and thought he was selected as one of the top grade level QBs on the final day of the camp. Don't blast the kid, because Coach states something that may be a stretch. If I've learned one thing, you can't really listen to the rhetoric and puns that Coach Clark says to the media. I think Coach(s) at DB are some of the best, but sugarcoating and cute puns don't fly when you're .500. These statements were not the fault of the QB.

To answer the previous thing about the freshman, do I think he will be a great high school player? Yes. When? Soon. Potentially a game-changer on both sides of the ball? Yes. All Conference in the future? Yes. All-State? Maybe. Future college player? Yes. D1? Too early to tell, but it's tough as there are so many good RBs. Good high school speed? Yes. Great high school speed? No. He had a great game the other night and it was good to see. I stood and clapped right with ya. Yep, was there deer. What I said previously, was in the game (singular) that I had seen him play in he didn't really look very fast. Man, he just wasn't. For reference, I asked my Rebel buddy about that very game (as I am old and my memory is, what was I saying?) and the two players that ran by him then were the younger Philips kid and the Waterson kid who broke the middle school hurdle record for Sullivan County and City of Kingsport. Maybe an unfair comparison, so I apologize if you feel that way. Do I think the freshman has good football speed now? Yes. Good, not great. Do I think Coach G will build the game plan around him? He better. So, in taking my own advice as I feel this borders on talking about a kid, good or bad, too much directly, let's drop this line of thought and see what happens in the next three years.

Now let's all be a little more aware that the kids read this. I agree with Skunk. Time to get behind them. Skunk, love your clarity on here.

BTW, Skunk - "Coach Gundy" hahahah That was great! I got it.

I guess I just like Sensabaughs straight ahead, hit the hole type of running. He doesn't dance around, and when he get's loose he has good speed as well.

  8. DB appears to have hit their stride. I think they can handle Sevier County and should finish the regular season with a 7-3 record. But you have play one game at a time.

The last part first, but yes I think DB is capable of running the table and then some. We needed the two wins badly.I want to see us go into the playoffs on fire, and hope we can improve some of our weekly mistakes.Special teams still worry me to death. Can we please get away from a punt that is near our goal line or rolling on the ground with the other team all around it.I'd like to see us improve more each game and have no weak points at years end.Roll Tribe

  9. I have disagreed with you before and will again...did you even witness the DB playoff losses the last 2 years? Passing wasn't the issue(Couldn't ask for more out of Bo, Coty, Throp, etc)...but when the WB game became a grind DB couldn't run against a bigger team from Region2 (Ooltewah in '05 as well) and got a quick sideline seat to the rest of the playoffs. We had NO problems last year with the passing game but most teams that are going places in the playoffs can run the ball...just check out the last few years.

Read your own post. The last two years we had no problems with the pass.OK,This year we do.We are still missing guys and turning the ball over, way to much.We could have walked away from WB with a win,had we been able to make some catches.I do agree that we should have took one of the big guys and plowed over at the goal line last year.Yes,you have to be able to run.If you can't pass and they stack 8 and 9 at the line, then guess what. I'll tell you what,OR and WB will beat you because you ran two times an had a incomplete pass, punted the ball 30 yards and they punt it 40 or 50.It don't add up.

  10. I know it's better to get the win on the scoreboard, but I think both of your teams proved a point.WB can beat anybody ,and so can Maryville. If the FG had been called good or not, nobody should talk crap after a battle like that.Just take pride in the fact you guys have two of the strongest teams in the state right now.Shoot,WB fans can even say they are in the top twenty in the nation tonight.Great job to both teams.

  11. I've been told that Chris is well within the age range to play all four years. If you see this kid run,you will know that he has plenty of speed.I've seen him run the bases during the summer for years, and there are very few kids that can move around the bases like he can. That's what I don't understand when you talk about his lack of speed. I still say 45 is your fullback next year and bring chris along as a halfback.Just watch how he can pick an opening and hit the hole. People forget that Hogg was our star runner early on,but he has had trouble holding onto the ball.Sylvester for whatever reason, just hasn't had his normal great year.I know he was hurt early on,but he not running as hard on offense, but at the same time he is making great plays all over the defensive field. If Hogg had not had his bad luck holding onto the ball and Sylvester was making great runs,we might not have seen Sensabaugh for a few more weeks. If I were coach Clark and thought that the water boy would help us get to and win playoff games,I'd tell the water boys mom that [ fooootball ain't the devil ]and we will cook her some swamp food if he can play.

Pudding, did you see the game.Chris is a halfback with speed and power. I still have to remember my own words,if we go away from the pass, forget a playoff run.I don't care how good we look on the run,and we did look great. These teams are not WB,OR and so on. Glad to see coach use the bench,I know some of those kids will be so happy this weekend .I was really glad the big guy got in,he has earned it .Great game,Roll Tribe

  12. What do you base your opinion on? Won/Loss record? Work ethic? Being role models for the players?

I'd say our head coach puts in as many hours away from the players,as a lot of coaches put in total.I've come to know a few of these guys and the ones I know are top of the line people.I didn't say that all of DB's coaches attend church 3 or 4 times a week and never let out a curse word.If you look at DB's front seven on defense, you would say that they are not big enough to stop anyone.Watson ,who coached at the next level, puts his defense in the best places and makes great adjustments. Clark has won many games at DB,but he is grounded enough to know your next loss could break the dam with a lot of fans. Let's hope that the river running out of the mountains above Elizabethton doesn't break our dam when they roll into town tonight.

  13. I think so. I've been around some great coaches and staffs, going all the way back to my game days in Kentucky. These guys are good and I know that as fans,we won't agree with everything. Looking at the staff at DB,I think they are very good and having the presure of all those years of great seasons behind them, have a very hard job.

  14. So....With the falcons playin their best football whats their chaces against Bell County KY

Falcon fans, could anybody tell me about your junior players this year.I've heared there were a few good ones. Somebody told me that church hill was allso a beast this year,do they still have the guy that came down from Maryland ?

  15. Yeah, I'm sure. I think the TSSAA has some great officals. No one is perfect. I really think that all the Region 1 refs want to make the right calls. I hate to see a game decided on anywhere but the field. I think it will be a better game tonight than some may think. Don't look for a blowout. The football never bounces the same way twice.

I agree,I've seen some bad calls and spots all year, but those guys make hundreds of decisions during a single game, and are going to mess up. The TSSAA has checks and balances as everyone should know.If a ref has brought up a red light with his calls, you better know someone over him is watching the game film and watching him even closer the next time he doe's a game.

  16. DB will win big tonight! even if the game is close going into the 4th they still win, the refs always cheat betsy when we play db....

We pay them good ! Just for this,I'll toss in a watch like the bear got at Kentucky.Your really going to get some bad calls now /roflolk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflolk:" border="0" alt="roflolk.gif" />

  17. Some people on here just need to face the facts!!!!!!!!!!! DB really isnt that good this year, sure neither is etown, but this game wont be just a walk in the park for DB!!!!!!!! If they want it they'll have to work for it!!!!!!! The team that comes the most prepared WILL prevail!!!!!!!!!! DB doesnt automatically get the W just because they're called DB!!!!!!!!!!

    GO CYCLONES!!!!!!!

IT doesn't matter how good either one of us think DB is. Every team that DB plays, will bring their A game week in and out.Do you think that the number ''two'' 5a team in the state was happy to beat a 1 and 2 DB team by just ''7''. They were just as happy as the other teams ranked in the top 10 that beat DB in close games.I know your team has fine athlthes and no game is a win until it's over.

  18. JEFFERSON COUNTY FRESHMEN 24

    KINGSPORT D-B FRESHMEN 7

This was very hard fought game. A lot of smashmouth play and very phyisical. This game is exactly what kind of

game JCHS needed. Game was closer than the score. Half way through the fourth quarter( score was 9-7 JCHS)

QB ran one for a TD, two point conversion was good ! After being backed up deep JCHS had to punt. The punt

faked and was snapped tp #27 who ran up the gut for a TD !!

    /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

Warlock,it must have been a great game.Good luck to your kids the rest of the way.You sound a whole lot like a dad! If your not,and have a boy who plays one of these days. You better do like me and get some good blood presure meds. I've got a feeling your allready paying the copay every month.Good luck JC freshman

  19. I like the idea of the Wide Receiver screen to J. Sylvester. He is very quick and fast, which are different things. He's blessed with both. As an example, Throp from last year hadd pretty good speed, but his strength was his extreme quickness. Very quick with the roundball. Back to Justin, did not know his ankle was not 100%. I think if you can get him the ball quickly, given the cushion corners give in this area, he'll move the sticks most of the time. I still don't think the freshman RB has the speed as some DB backs have had and from what I hear he's pretty strong, so I automaticlly think FB and ILB. Again, I am basing this on the game I saw and comparing him to another team's RB. Maybe he's picked up some speed. I always thought speed was God-given, but I have heard some say speed can be improved. I really don't know. If the season does not go well towards the middle and end of the year, I certainly would say let's move him up along with other youngsters and start training for the future. BUT, I'm not expecting the remander of the season to go poorly and I am not giving up on the current crop of Indians. Speaking of the future, and knowing there are TSSAA limits on age and eligibility, how many years will this freshman be able to play? Hate the idea of a kid not being able to play his senior year, but I understand and respect the rules.

I've been told that Chris is well within the age range to play all four years. If you see this kid run,you will know that he has plenty of speed.I've seen him run the bases during the summer for years, and there are very few kids that can move around the bases like he can. That's what I don't understand when you talk about his lack of speed. 20. DB Dad

Hope all is well in Kingsport. My Govs play Maryville this week, My only question is, what in the world are you doing up at this time of the day? I've had to work all night and I'm waiting on the relief man. Look forward to seeing you all again soon. Sounds like your recievers are starting to catch the ball and things are looking up... Good luck the rest of the season... /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

    GO GOVS

All is well up here, and I wish you guys all the best against Maryville.I had to hit the road early this morning, and I'm just getting home.I hope we can keep the good catches going and hope both our teams do well from here on out. I wish I could be down there for your game this week, but I'll be pulling for the Tribe and waiting to hear the score down your way.
