  1. I agree with these two quotes. I'm a big fan of drum corps and high school marching band but there is nothing athletic about it. DOES PERFORMING ARTS RING A BELL TO ANYONE?? In drum corps, these are musicians and performers who must be in top shape to practice and perform at a very high level and make huge sacrifices to do what they love. Playing an instrument and spinning an apparatus takes practice and discipline but it's not athletic. However, if you put the time, dedication, and heart to learn and develop your talents it does mean something.

While I am on your side of the argument that it is not a sport, I do disagree with your statement that marching band isn't at all athletic. Anyone who has ever been to a band contest knows that. The bands POUR sweat like crazy. Anyone who has ever seen a band right after they come off the field can tell it's athletic. Their heart rates do come up and it requires a lot of stamina to do it. It's one thing to just march, which does take a lot of not only muscle strength but muscle control. But doing it while playing is tough stuff. You just want to be able to breath but you can't because you have to keep playing. It's athletic for different reason than football and basketball and cross country are athletic. but it is athletic. Just not a sport.

  2. How can you call them athletes. At DCI level they are all in great shape but there is nothing athletic about the marching band. They are in good shape an very talented. Your local High School band is no were near that kind of shape. Have a high school band an a high school football team running wind sprints an i will bet you 85-90% of the football team would finish before the bands best runner. Dont get me wrong i know how hard yall work but being in athletic shape is alot different then being in good shape

Eh, not true. Most of them start off the summer not in shape and end up in great shape, obviously for being outside in the hot summer sun for 12 hours, day in and day out, and doing several shows a week. Ask any corps director and they will tell you about all the cardio workouts they do. And that was exactly my point. That high school band is no where near that level, and you only reach the "sport level" fitness from everyone in the group when you get into DCI. In high school bands there are those in good shape, but you've got people that aren't in great shape. In corps, everyone ends up in pretty good. shape, and could do those wind sprints with the football team.

But you and I are agreeing on this, if you would care to read my post carefully. I do not think high school band is a sport. They work hard yes, there is no doubt about it. Like I said, I used to be in band. I know first hand. But as far as being a sport? Band doesn't have a long list of rules and penalties, where a certain number of yards (or in the band's case points) get deducted for specific mistakes. Scores vary week to week with the band. One week they may get 1 point deducted for something and the next week it be 5. A lot of band judging is based on opinion. in football, you either cross the line for a touchdown or you don't. you either kick the ball through the uprights or you don't. There is no in between. the refs can't say, "I don't like how you threw the ball, so I'm taking off 2 points." In band, you can't play defense. You can just do your show, and hope that the other band don't do it better than you. There is no way for you to make their job harder. There is no way you can keep other bands from outscoring you.

I like to watch the band, I enjoy the band, I'm glad the band is there to help with that Friday night atmosphere. I know they work hard. I know not everyone could survive a band camp because it is difficult.. It is physical. It is emotional. It is mental. It is hard to do everything they have to do all at once. However, it is not a "sport". But I don't see what the big fuss is about. Why DO band kids always want to be in that classification? If you want to be a sport, play a sport. When I was in band, I wouldn't have wanted to be called a sport. It is a thing all it's own that I believe is very respectable. so the football team and players shouldn't be so hard on the band. they do work hard. They aren't all little wimps. They just aren't ALL what I would call athletes.

  3. I was in band before I moved here. Now I'm more into watching football. But can you band guys tell me how our band (Station Camp) compares to everyone else around? I don't really know. I think they're good from what I've seen at our games, but haven't really searched around to see how good they are comparitavely.

  4. I think this video will help this discussion a bit. I personally don't think high school band is a sport. I enjoy watching our band. We have a great band. I used to be in band. I'm not anymore. I don't think it is a sport until you reach Drum Corps level. Then, it is without a doubt a sport. I can kind of see both sides of the argument. Band is more demanding than people think. But still, it's not the full on everyday physical contact sport. As Lcband10 said, there is no reason for band to desire to be a sport. You are unique. I do think people should give the band more credit though, because they do work hard, and get exhausted. But yeah, watch this video, and I think you will respect the band kids more. These people are without a doubt athletes.

  5. If you haven't notice we play better on the road so being at home don't matter to us. We are coming to take care of business and get ready for the winner of that G.B. vs W.H. game.

All I'm saying is the atmosphere will be totally different. You haven't been to every SC like I have to know that the team you guys saw when we played you IS NOT the SC team that has been around all year. There won't be an announcer that doesn't shut up and one that yells in the middle of plays. It's going to be a totally different atmosphere than when we were at your house. It's Bison Country, Bison territory, whatever you want to call it. And our boys are fired up, ready to go, and up for the challenge.

When we left the game at Pearl Cohn, I didn't know what to say to anyone who asked me how the game went, except "I don't know what happened..." because the team I know and love WASN'T there, and they will be this time. You guys got into their heads with all the dancing on the sidelines and kickoff whatever you want to call it, and going crazy over every little thing your team did right. The sidelines erupted for everything. So yes, that is an undisciplined team if you ask me. What shocked me the most is that the coaches were doing it too. You don't see our team do that until something that completely changes the game happens, or after a win. Not after EVERY good play.

  6. I would like to see Station Camp win this one, but they have got to prove that they CAN beat Pearl Cohn before I would go so far as to pick'm. Pearl Cohn in a close one!

I'm telling you, our boys are sooo hungry for this win. They just let Pearl Cohn get in their heads last time in the first quarter. They got intimidated. It's a whole different animal this time. It's at our house. Everything is fresh on their minds. They are still pretty upset about the loss. I have a feeling SC is going to pull this one out. Especially after the HUGE win over Meigs County.

  7. Yall need to quit being so cocky but its going be a good game but in our eyes this is our year! PCH "DONT PLAY WIT IT" What u said!

I'm sorry, but it is obvious that it's not all of us SC fans that are being cocky. We know it's going to be a tough game. But you all think that you are a definite win, which isn't the case.

We aren't being cocky. you are.

  8. How u think it's gonna play out Friday night against Station Camp?

yeah I think it'll be a little different at our house. The guys are still pretty bitter about the loss, and coming from a 51-12 win tonight I'm thinking it'll be a totally different SC team than what showed up at Pearl Cohn. (I'm not sure exactly what team that was at Pearl-Cohn, but it sure wasn't the one we had been seeing all year or the one we saw tonight.)

  9. Station Camp is a farce! Pearl-Cohn will wipe the field with SC. Too much white patio furniture on the SC roster. SC was lucky to beat a very young WH team last week. Reality comes home to roost this Friday.

    Pearl-Cohn - 55

    Station Camp - 6

You're dumb if you honestly think that 1) SC isn't a good team or 2) that the score is gonna be 55-6.

Both teams are extremely talented and it's going to be a close score and the winner will be determined by who wants it more and who works harder to get it.
