  1. We'll see how it all shakes out. I've got 8th grade and 11th grade kids. Their teachers seem to be convinced that this is a done deal. There was an interesting article in the Times-News yesterday about the TSSAA being in contact with the school system about the merger. The way I read it the TSSAA's preferred solution is for the high school to keep an existing school name and number for 2 years and participate in the already scheduled home/away contracted games, conference schedule, and playoffs (presumably 4A for football). Then, after 2 years, go through their standard realignment process for schools whose enrollment has changed more than 20%. At that point the school could change names and schedule games with their new conference partners during the normal 2-year home/away game scheduling cycle. You'd have a big school competing against the other 4A schools but what else could you do unless TSSAA changes the rules. Personally, I think it will be a 5A school in 2 years. I don't know how many will end up going to Dobyns-Bennett but I think I read that there were between 300 and 400 Kingsport city kids going to North and South right now instead of D-B. I know D-B could not hold that many more kids but Kingsport won't quit annexing...

That is the way I understood the article as well. It seems to make the most sense. While my preference is for things to remain unchanged, that option seems unlikely at this point. During my playing days I actually lived about 2 blocks from Ketron but went to South as I grew up in Colonial Heights and did not want to change schools. I always enjoyed the rivalry between the two schools, there were some intense battles on the field. I hope the student athletes can embrace the change should it happen this way. It will be interesting to see what happens with the coaching staffs as well. Maybe North/South can pull a "Remember the Titans".

  2. Well from the way it looks the Golden Raiders of Sullivan North and the Rebels of South may be joining forces in the near future. One will become a middle school, the other the high school and will be the new Sullivan West. And then a couple of years down the road reclassify to either 5 or 6A. We shall see how this all shakes out... will be tough for both communities, at least at first.

  3. South Rebels move to 4A ball. Any news on the team? Coaching staff? Crawdad, you got any news to pass along? I don't have any sources other than this board so I look forward to any discussion. I am buddies with a coach on staff at South but rarely see him anymore due to kids, work etc... I spoke with him before the start of last year and he was optimistic about the young talent coming up and in.

  4. Well hello DB faithful. Let me first congratulate you on your first two dominating wins. Looks like the team is playing with purpose and has undeniable talent. I honestly believe you will see Maryville this year in the playoffs, and I will go to that game unless South is still playing. As far as a game prediction, while hopeful we can pull an upset, I see DB as a big favorite.

Now since this may be the last match up, I would like to get some insight from the DB faithful. I did a little digging due to sheer curiousity and found some historical statistics from various websites.

    - The series began, I believe, with the 1980-1981 school year.

    - looking at the enrollment numbers from the two schools, from 1988-1993 South hovered between 1300-1400 students while DB was around 1550-1600. (I used 1993 for reference as that was the last time the Rebs defeated the Tribe ouch!)

    - Current Enrollment (estimated, please correct with updated info), South a little over 900 and DB close to 2100?

    - Tribes all-time record vs South 25-5.

    - Through the first 14 games DB held a 9-5 advantage, most games were competitive.

I realize statistics can be misleading and my homerism chose these stats. Honestly, from a DB fans point of view... what has been the biggest reason for DB's two decade long dominance? Is it superior coaching, superior athletes, sheer numbers, better facilities or some combo of all or other factors?

  5. Hope the little guy gets to see the Rebels pay back the Enka Jets with a vengeance. I'm expecting a good edition with the biggest concern the defense. Offense should be very good. Spring scrimmages with Happy Valley on the 10th and North on the 21st. See you there '81.

Preciate it Crawdad :thumb: ! I remember going to my first South game sporting my colonial heights jersey in middle school, it was almost as much fun as the first time i took the field in Death Valley! He'll be too little to remember his first time but i want to get him started Rebel yellin' early! My son has the brightest red hair you may ever see, if you notice us say hello.

  6. South has only won two games south of Morristown. And they are also the leader in one and dones in upper east tn. In 2006 DB defeated South 44-0. Can anybody remember how many games in a row we have won over South? I have lost count. Oh....and we're taking over Colonial Heights so u-all need to be packing your bags.

Not one to live in the past but... 2009 season South did beat Knox West, Knox Powell, and Knox Catholic. I hate to even mention the streak, but i think it is at 17 im sure you know that though (hard to type that one in)

I agree with your reasonable rationale from an earlier post about the streaks vs SH and South, at some time just due to law of averages streaks usually end. SH has all the time in the world, looks like our window may be closing. Hopefully it ends this year, we battled last year and kept it close. I saw DB's special teams really as the difference, we had a hard time with your punt block unit. Here's to hoping we can shorten the game, keep it close, and have a chance in the 4th quarter. Hoping for a hard fought, clean, close game. :popcorneater:

  7. Well I guess maybe the South kids study harder or their just smarter than DB kids. This is a football thread though and as you know their ACT scores have never helped much on the the football field when going up against the Tribe. Perhaps the smartest team that South has ever had was the 2006 team where they lost to the Indians 44-0. It was a game (according to all those smart South fans) that they were going to win easly. Maybe when the city moves into Colonial Heights we'll be able to field a team as smart as that 2006 South team. Ah......thats just me dreaming

The post was in reply to making South a vocational school and the ongoing discussion/speculation on the future of the South system as a whole. I am not trying to debate the intellect of the football players on either side as I am sure both schools field fine, intelligent young men. I can see from your previous comment and posting history that you are neither. Your comments tarnish past, present, and future Indians. You are the reason these boards turn sour. You can enjoy a squabble with someone else, i will not engage you as i am sure you've got plenty of worn out, tired comments that you are just dying to repeat. Stay classy Kingsport, this poster is done.

  8. Still a silly rumor, but the Times-News didn't help things. The article did not mention South. It is my understanding that Yennie is on South's side. Kitzmiller was the one quoted concerning picking schools.

As of the 08-09 school year, South sent 79% of their students to college and DB sent 70%.

I'll repeat; There is NO possibility of South becoming some sort of technical school. NONE.

South also has outscored DB in the ACT and Rock Springs, Miller Perry and Colonial Heights Middle School scored higher than city as well in TCAPS. From kingsport times news in December 2010:

Report Card section of the state Department of Education Web site at tennessee.gov/education. They show that the three-year average (2007-2009) TCAP scores for Rock Springs, Miller Perry and Colonial Heights Middle School for the most part exceed those of city schools. The three-year average ACT scores for Sullivan South High School in 3 of 4 categories, including the composite score, exceed those of Dobyns-Bennett

Just to back up your point... both good school systems though.

  9. Tough loss tonight for the indians, i hate it for the seniors. Sensabaugh has had a heck of a career at DB, good luck to him at the next level as well as all of your seniors in their future endeavors. I know it hurts now, but 11-1 is a darn good season. This South Reb was pulling for you tonight. I'll see you in the offseason threads.

  10. I agree 100% that Boone win and are playing great football on both sides of the ball. South is also playing good football and you are right, if a team can stop Hayden then they have a good chance of winning. Boone has several play makers and can score in different ways.

South has owned Boone in this series, I believe 26 to 3. Boone may never catch up in series, but a win next Friday would sure be enjoyable, exciting, refreshing, and etc...... GO BOONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to Boone on another solid regular season and earning a 3 seed. Both teams really seem to be "hitting on all cyclinders" right now. I'm glad that we play close to home so I can attend but this is a very tough match up, the past series history does not matter. There's no tricks in this one, we know you and you know us. That being said, everyone so far is picking Boone. Let me go ahead and get this Rebel train going and say 35-27 RRR e b... eee l s... reb els. REBELS REBELS REBELS!!!

  11. I’m hoping the Vikings can put together a better game plan (Coaches included) and bring it to the table this time… or else it’s going to be colder than the predicted temperature on the home side tonight because Double H WILL make you pay. By now the coaches should know what they are working with (which is still more than most) and should make adjustments to accent the attributions we do have. Boone and South are both perfect examples of coaches knowing what they’re working with and making it work for them. I still maintain the fact that if they don’t go ahead and let the Jr. QB get his feet wet, we will continue to struggle on offense. My guess is that Stubbs will do everything in his power to prove that wrong because…. that’s the way Stubb-orn is. If he hasn’t made the change thus far he’s decided to go down with the ship as I said in an earlier post. I DO think the Vikings have the crew to pull this one off, but it’s going to take a heavy hand at the wheel to steer them in the right direction to get some wind in those empty sails. Good luck and stay safe and injury free to all involved. :thumb:

I never take TN High lightly. There may be a blowout every once in awhile, but for the most part these two squads trade punches. The talent and potential are definitely there. I am hoping for a South win of course, but as ive stated earlier, i think it will be 27-21 or something similar either way. The 3-6 and 4-5 playoff match-up will be very interesting to see how it pans out. Good health(always) and good luck to all (except when you play my Rebels). bundle up and bring the hot cocoa, its gonna get chilly tonight!

  12. This is how I see things shaping up after everything is said and done. It looks to me like if the teams in Quad 3 doesn't kill each other then that Quad will again be where your state champion comes from! Let me know what you think..........

In Quad 1... Sullivan South plays at Tennessee High this week... If South wins, would they get the 5 seed and TN High the #6?

  13. We really need this win. I don't want to have to travel to Knoxville for the first round of the playoffs. It would really help if Crockett can pull the upset at Boone and bearden can beat Knox catholic. If all of the above happen we would host a first round game vs mo west if I understand it correctly. It all depends on who joins us in quad 1 tho. Tn high always plays us tough, I think this is going to be a nail biter. I say south 28-24, GO rebels!

  14. You gotta love rivalry games. This year its bigger for Crockett than Boone, as the pioneers playoff hopes ride on this game and Boone is almost a lock. (well at least i think, this playoff system is a little screwy). Crockett is a tough team, but Boone seems to be hitting on all cyclinders right now. Boone coming off of a big win v. TN High better not overlook this team. I'm curious about the Shepherd kid from Crockett, he didn't get many touches last night in death valley is he healthy? Anyhow, best of luck to the folks in the musket bowl. Early prediction 35-21 Trailblazers.
