  1. Compiling a top 10 best in this country is nearly as American as mom, the flag and apple pie.

From the 10 toughest guys in your neighborhood growing up, to rock-n-rolls greatest hits of the 60s to the best utube videos.

How fiting, on the Eve of the 50th of the state wrestling tournament (Feb. 18-20), to name Tennessees best prep wrestlers in the past half century.

Its a given that todays mat warriors are more skilled than their predecessors from a generation ago and possibly even a decade ago. But in an effort to honor the past wrestlers - upon whose shoulders todays wrestlers stand and the present champs, here is not only the top 10, but the 50 best high school wrestlers in Tennessee.

The criteria includes ones high school career complete with at least one state title, success at senior nationals and cadet and junior freestyle and greco-roman nationals at Fargo, N.D., with college achievements a plus.

Mid South Conference: The vast majority of wrestlers who competed in the prep school Mid South Conference (1949-1970 for wrestling) did not compete in the state tournament; thus, are not eligible for this list.

But the handful of Mid South wrestlers who were allowed to compete in the 1961 and 1962 state tournaments are eligible and some did make the list as state champs.

The national prep champions from the Mid South are listed at the end of the story.

No doubt, several can and will argue for wrestlers in their region of the state over others which makes the discussion interesting, stimulating and welcome.

No Tonys, Oscars or Emmys are awarded and no checks handed out to the top 10. Just an opinion, yet hopefully an educated one, with solid input from across the state.

One wrestling official stated that, "We are not re-writing The Bible ... this is just an opinion!''

Those champions who stand out from the hundreds, yes maybe thousands of teens who have dared to walk alone to center mat in the squared circle before roaring student bodys to test their abilities against another in honorable combat.

Warriors who have pushed themselves to the limit and beyond and have stood alone on the top step on many a Saturday afternoon, when in a six-minute span of time, which seemed an eternity, boys become men and legends in our sport.

To all who have wrestled and worked hard we salute you and to those who have reached higher we acknowledge those accomplishments as well.

With that, here is the best of the best; those with sterling credentials and lofty numbers.

  2. i completely agree. if Adrian Thomas is up there, so should Belcher and Sawyer...i personally think Belcher and/or Sawyer should be there in place of Thomas

Ok question, @ 135... If Sawyer from Harpeth beats Thomas from Clarksville NE and Belcher from Wilson Central Beats Sawyer.. Why is Thomas still on the board and neither one of those Boys are? Belcher not only won the tourney but was seeded 4th and had to wrestle his way to the top to win. If your going to give credit to Thomas for coming in 3rd, Then shouldn't those other two boys get some too? Just wondering how it works...

Help out with the empty weight classes.

Treloar i believe is staying at 130

Matt Shanes will be a big contender at 140 or 145

if Tanner can get down to 103, he will definately be at the top of the list

followed by White House and Beech

  4. Ok matmaster, where did the two new kids (state qualifiers) come from and what weight class will they wrestle?

    New kids??

Beech sent 6 to state last year

Now Graduated-Josh Maggart, Cory Amons, Ryan Priddy, and Justin Gibson

    Now a Senior-Johnny Kleinart

Now a Sophmore-Taylor Cash, who may or may not be wrestling this year due to baseball

  5. i think kleinart is returning this year but i dont know the weight class

I dont know exact weights but Beech's line-up should be somethin like this

    103-Jacob Bolton/Travis Proctor

    112-Kyle Talbott

    119-Zach Pickney

    125-Justin Kleinart

    130-Jonathan Roberts

    135-Johnny Kleinart

    140-Matt Shanes

    145-Ward Strickland

    152-Hunter Cain

    160-Nathan Goff

171-(some kid from Nebraska) not sure who

    189-Camden Dalton

    215-Jonathan Sites

    HWT-Jamie Howell

  6. Region 8 belongs to H'ville until another (FULL) team decides to take it. If a team can keep

Hendersonville from maxing out points with their studs, and get a few pins of their own,

they may come out on top? I do think that it will be closer this year. We need to see team

strength before passing judgement. No team will be able to have open slots and win the region

this year. It's going to take a good, full team to beat H'ville. Smyrna may have a stud or two,

but it takes more than a couple pins to win the region.

My guess based on last years performance would be H'ville on top with MJ and Beech at their heels.

Beech has a full line-up and will be giving hendersonville a run for their money

  7. Jake Rainey

    Matt Williams

    Steven Bretz

Rossview wins overall. Not a very exciting region.

ummm its actually a pretty exciting matchup between Beech and Rossview

Beech was only 3 points behind them in the region at Mid-State

I say Beech gets them in the end

  8. Beech travels to Ravenwood next week. We'll see how they compare to Brentwood, Franklin and Hendersonville. Should be a good game.

what part of Hendersonville is terrible do you guys not get.

Please watch them and then try to say that they are one of the best teams

  9. "and I believe Oak Ridge also beat SAA"

    Don't think. Get your facts, can you say, E U R O S P O R T S C O R E Board? All the scores are there.

    So here goes the facts:

St. Agnes did not play Oak Ridge, they played Dobyns-Bennett to a tie. DB beat OR 2-0

DB has scored 60 goals and had 8 scored on them

Gallatin, who you dominated, has scored 13 and had 27 goals scored on them. The point was tongue in cheek, Gallatin is dominated by everyone, sorry Gallatin for making you part of this.

SAA has scored 29 vs 8 and

Beech has scored 30 vs 19

Statisticly, you have no case, but I applaud your big heart and confidence and I agree with letting the regionals even out the boasting field.

I just could not figure out why you decided to pick SAA as THE team Beech is better than.

    /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Yeah um DB was beaten by OR 2-0

ok wut is SAA's record against state ranked teames

    Beech is 3-1

    beating OR, HHS, and SCHS

  10. Sorry, did not realize you would needed to be handled. You said Beech is better that SAA, "they had a bad day"

My point was Gallatin.........who had the bad day there? SAA won over both, were they both having a bad day? Every team has a bad day, but that's a poor excuse for a loss. SAA has had some bad days this year and lost games where the other team capitalized on a missed ball, but no one is claiming "bad day". You can't say anyone is better than another until the season is over. You created the post, I just responded. If you are confused, I suggest you not proclaim one team is better than another without using "bad day" as the reason for a loss. Perhaps we should say, the team had a great day and won over the better team who only had a good day. Good day, bad day, great day, if a team wins because of an own goal, what kind of day is that for the winner? Maybe we should add a "lucky"day. I guess I missed your point.

    ok

Wut does Gallatin have to do with this????

    Beech beat them 3-0

    it was no contest

    they completely dominated

how is Oak Ridge inside the Top 10 when Beech beat them 2-0

and I believe Oak Ridge also beat SAA

now i may be wrong. i may be thinkin of someone else

    but yeah your right

we'll see what happens when regions and state roll around

  11. Thank you Mr. Beech.

Great win over Gallatin. Check the scores of their games and where do you think you stand? No ill for Gallatin, but was that a bad day for Beech too?

    Was what a bad day?

    no ill for Gallatin?

it may just be me but that didnt make any sense

    in order east to west

    oak ridge(D-B)

    bearden(greenville/morristown west)

    soddy-daisy(siegel/shelbyville)

    riverdale(cleveland)

    franklin/ravenwood(beech)

    brentwood(smryna/hendersonville)

    collierville and houston

Hendersonville needs to be removed from that list

    Have you seen them play?

they have no chance of makin it to state

  12. This is Master MJUHB:

    Top 25 Overall

    1 Baylor

    2 Collierville

    3 Brentwood

    4 Bearden

    5 Siegel

    6 Riverdale

    8 Father Ryan

    9 Soddy-Daisy

    10 Oak Ridge

    21 Houston

    22 Beech

    23 Shelbyville

    24 Dobyns-Bennett

    25 Hendersonville

    This is Euorospit:

    1 Brentwood 8-0-1

    2 Baylor 6-0-1

    3 Notre Dame 5-3-0

    4 Bearden 7-2-0

    5 Collierville 6-1-2

    6 Father Ryan 5-2-1

    7 FRA 6-1-1

    8 Siegel 5-2-0

    9 Brentwood A 4-0-2

    10 Oak Ridge 7-2-1

    11 Houston 4-3-1

While ECS did make mjuhb' list, St. Agnes did not. SAA beat Beech 3-1 and tied Dobyns-Bennett. ECS is 5-1-0, Briarcrest is 7-3-0 and St. Agnes is 4-1-1. Father Ryan in on both list with 5-2-1. Collierville and Houston seem to get noticed, but the private schools get left out, IMO. There's some big games this week which could impact the standings as well. Let's see how they play out. My thoughts may be moot.

Beech is a better team than SAA

they had a bad game and showed what they were made of by beating,"State Championship contender" Oak Ridge, 2-0

They also beat Hendersonville 1-0 and Station Camp 3-2

The only Regular Season loss they have is to Independence 3-1 at the begining of the year

They are a young based team with 6 Sophmores starting

2 strong Forwards in Rikki Mercado and Brittany Kemp

Mid Fielders Alex Carufe and Kay Morgan

    Defender Demmie Guinn

and very good and improving Goal Keeper Leslie Davenport

    all of which are sophmores

they are definately a team to watch down the stretch

  13. Good question. Don't know the answer. I know that they did last season (but also filmed a lot of games during the year that they broadcasted which they didn't during this season). I would like for them to do so, but if not, I have a camera man who will be filming either way.

    Will you be broadcasting?

  14. I heard that coach Russ Plummer (Hendersonville High School) was in a accident at Drakes Creek Park today.

I am not sure all the details but please keep him in your prayers. If anyone has details of his condition please share.

He was parking his flat bed gator and it got stuck in high gear causing him to get stuck under the bottom of the bleachers at the field of dreams, where the walkway is in front of the seats. The flat bed hit the bleachers and could not go any farther, causing it to bounce off and hit it again and again eventually bending the steering wheel back, causing more pressure on him. A man walking his dog found him and called for help

His circulation was completely cut off, and he was loosing conciousness fast. They got him out and immediately called 911. He had an inch indention just below his chest. A helicopter then landed on the Field of Dreams and they took him to Vanderbilt

  15. Ok then...if that is the case then I'd vote Hville's entire defense to all district, along with their keeper - end of story.

    u ppl dont get it

    Josh already won it

    period.. end of story

now quit blabbing about how good your goalkeepers are cause its not gonna change anything

  16. Half of the scheduled teams have losing records. and 2011 is far away and beech will not be a state contender period.

    ok we'll see wut happens

    beech played christian brothers

the #3 team in the state at the time

    and #12 in the nation

    who did your team play????

  17. cause Beech has no Defense. Thats why they are terrible. when you have 3 shutouts all year with a weak schedule like Beech does you dont deserve it. Hayden is playing in college. Lavergne's keeper has 4-5 shutouts in a row. Hayden has 4 GA in District Lavergne has 8. Martin on the other hand has 10. I'm just saying whichever keeper wins tonight should receive that honor but anyways congrats to Josh.

i understand wut your saying and they arent terrible

they lost 15 senoirs last year. they are redeveloping

i promise u by the 2011 season beech will be contending for state titles

they have players from kaos 94 coming up, who recentally won state

plus 10 of the freshman they have, 4 of which start varsity, have been together as a team for 4 yrs

not to mention they were ranked 3rd in the nation in 7th grade while thier 6th grade team(freshman next year) were 1st in the nation for 3 yrs

but actually beech had a really tough schedule this year

    im excited about the future
