    ACL tears

i hear alot of good things about doctor Elrod. He seems to be the best of the best. if i lived closer i'd definatly give him a shot. just got my surgery bill back, 35,000 dollars. thats alot of 0's. but thank goodness the insurance paid most of it. shooting in 6 weeks? wow! did she have any meniscus tears at the point of the injury? cuz its my 4th week to the date and im still on crutches. i guess everyone heals at diffrent speeds depending on their body's responce and on the doctor and their support group.
  2. Temple will be lucky to make it to state. boys yes, girls are definatly iffy. they play scappy basketball.... but you look at teams like jackson county and Clarkrange and the ones mentioned before.... what are the odds? people do get lucky, and they may see a spot in the region championship, or a district championship win... but state?
  3. i see youre point. the bench obviously does deserve their major mins in a game of the such. i say put your starters in, let them get their points, and then stick em on the bench and let them support their teammates. you don't wanna play a team like RH and beat em 10-4. you want to establish a good foundation, then let the 2nd string do their thing. it's what winning with class is all about (as long as you don't press the whole game!)
  4. every game goes in the stat book. if you have a 22 point game and the next game you play a crappy team and they take you out after only scoring 4, what does that do to your average? It brings it down significantly.

oh ok, i hope i dont have any hamstring hangups of the such. when i experience these "patellar hangups", am i at risk of retearing it? it feels so tight and tense. i have proceded with my exersises but they are getting worse. im guna call my doctor today, and ask him his opinion on it. im wondering if when i start to walk again, if i'll have a brace or not? haha i guess im just getting anxious and im always full of questions.
  6. CSAS wasn't at fault... i mean the numbers did look bad, but the starters gotta get their points, and the jv wants to score.... you cant tell em go hold them ball. richard hardy is just bad... and csas is really good so what do you expect?

ok, i'll try that when i get home from school today. sounds good to me. you are right, it makes sense now, bc when i move my knee cap around i do feel looser when bending. ill start using your technique. i wanna do every thing i can to get more motion there, and im excited to get to walk in less than a week. I'm glad to hear that he jr girl you were working with now is back into full practice. how exciting! why is she having hamstring troubles? did she have a hamstring graft?

    ACL tears

i think the grade of the tear is significant, but if it's torn all the way thru, then surgery will definately be necsissary. there have been a handfull of athletes who have had a grade 3 tear(all the way thru) and still played, but like worden55 said, youre putting your meniscus in great danger, i tore mine when i tore my acl, and it has caused alot of complications. she can still go to some exposure camps, or even walk onto a team. it doesn't have to be the end for her. my heart breaks for her, im in the same situation exept im a junior. best wishes.

i actually havent done any "patellar moobilizations"... i donty know what they are. right now all im doing is bending up and down from 90 to 0 degrees 2-3 mins 6x a day, and moving my knee cap around with my hand once a day. when i bend, it gets hung up and i cant bend it anymore unless i make it straight again and proceed.

I agree with Worden. Full range of motion (depending on what was done with your lateral meniscus, you may be limited to 90degrees flexion at first). Then get your quads and hams going. The sooner you can weight bear (MD orders), the quicker your quads figure out what their job is. Have fun!!! Approach your PT like you do a game: work hard, sweat, push through discomfort, pay attention to pain, and worry only about making progress. How fast you progress is not the issue. If every 2 weeks you can look back and say your knee is better than it was 2 weeks before, you are doing fine. Hang in there!!! sometimes while doing bending exercises i expirience hang ups in my patellar area as it seems, is that normal? it just gets hung up and is very painful.

My grandpa has a similar story to your uncle, and now is facing a full knee replacement in his early 50's. The fact that anyone can have 4 reconstructions, and still play is absolutly amazing. having to get all the tunnels in line, and grafts place perfectly.... orthopaedics is an amazing concept. so is physical therapy at that. best wishes to your daughter. i'm glad to hear of another sucsess story, every little bit encourages me.

yes, that is when the danger comes. patience is the key. wow 4 surgeries? thats awful. confidence is something i worry about after, but im sure things will fall into place when the time comes. does she have tendonitus or anything like that?

    ACL tears

ok thanks... i needed that one answered=) i definatly do not wanna mess it up any worse like your daughter did, i'll try and learn from her mistake. i think the real test is going to come when im walking, and feeling stronger, cuz right now i physically cant play so its not temping, but later my mind will definatly be temped to "mess around" shooting in a couple months. does your daughter have any problems with her knees now?

Hang in there!!! they stitched up my meniscus, and from my home exercises over the past 2 weeks, im getting over 90 degrees, so i feel i am making progress somewhat already. =) sorry to ask so many questions, but how long into therapy will i go before i can shoot again?

    ACL tears

thank you. my school does not have a ATC, so i gues im in the same boat she is. i'm not sure if having torn my lateral meniscus, cracked my kneecap and bruised my femur added on that will have any effect on my healing time. i may wear a brace just for the mental part, but i guess ill cross that bridge when i come to it. that is interesting info about the elastics and non elastics of the graft. i hope my therapist will stay up to date with my coach as you have with hers, that would be great. ok i have another question. my first week of therapy, generally what will i be doing? (seeing that it starts 1 month after surgery)

    ACL tears

ACL tears are very excrucating to say the least, at the point of the injury, the player often hears a pop or two. After it happens, much instability is felt in the knee depending on the grade of the tear. if it is only partially torn, the injured person may be able to wrap it tight for the remainder of the season, but most often an ACL tear requires surgey. There have been a handfull of very committed athletes who have torn it all the way thru and played a whole season thru much pain and risking it being injured worse, and had surgery after the season. every athlete is different.

    ACL tears

thank you so much tcamom. this is an encouragement to me. i have a question for anyone who has an answer. Will all 6 months of my recovery envolve therapy? my othopaedic doc starts me with a therapist in 2 wks, (a month after surgery) will it last until the full 6 months are done? Also, will i need a brace after i have made a full recovery?

hi CDL. im glad to hear your daughter's surgery went well, her and i have been emailing every since you gave her email to me. is she in alot of pain? i greatly appreciate it, it's been nice talking to someone who knows what im going through. my thoughts and prayers are with her, and the family. your comment about relishing the time you have on the court is SO true. everything changes once you go down.... and i honestly think the emotional part is going to be the worst. My parents can relate to you i'm sure. best wishes.

though the hamstring graft may be a good graft, but nevertheless you are taking away from an uninjured area. the upside is, you are less likely to develop tendonitus later on in the hamsting, bc it is not doing alot of bending whereas the petella will be. i was told ill have tendonitus in my L knee for the rest of my sports carrer. i am not convinced totally that the cadaever graft is effective the majority of the time..... due to the high risk of re-rupture, and the added factor of the fact that it is not your body's tissue. you put your body at a high risk of being infected that way.... bc it rejects the tissue. though the scars will be a significant amount smaller, i feel a bigger scar with a better shorter healing time may be more effective. this is debatable nevertheless.

hi crisco 41, i am SO sorry to hear about your daughter and her friend. that truely breaks my heart for them, sincerely. my surgery went great, i had a bone petallar tendon graft. the percentage of re rupture for that type of graft is 3%. as opposed to the cadiver graft's re-rupture rate of 23%. i highly recommend it, i have been able to go back to school, and continue my normal activities after just 13 days. my incision is small, a bit painful, but getting better every day. the first two days propir to surgery are the worst, but after that she will be fine. any more questions... please ask me!

    ACL tears

Thanks knighttime. i really appriciate your tips and advice. i'm having surgery on January 2nd, a bone patellar tendon graft from my same left knee. im very anxious, nervous, etc. i would really appriciate everyone's prayers.... For some reason, i will not be in therapy until 4-6 weeks after, but i do think my surgeon knows what he's doing. The MRI showed i have a complete tear of the acl, a lateral menisus tear, and a bone bruise on the bottom of my femur. I cant wait to be nailing three's again! Unfortunatly we do not have an athletic trainer at our school, bc it is rather small. But my orthopaedic doctor is very open for questions so i asked away yesterday. Thanks again.

Thank you so much!!! What an inspiring story. I could only dream of playing D1. wow. And playing with your ACL requires alot of strength for sure. Congrats on playing in the National Championship! Prayer is key you are right. I'm glad this doesn't have to be the end. So very glad. I hope my story when it's all done will be as inspiring as yours.
