  1. he's a good shooter and yes he will pull it from deep, but he also pulled some last year in the district championship that hurt them. this year i would say he is going to have to take all the shots for them. from what ive heard they are running short on players and are starting two sophomores.

So if a team double teamed the Long kid, or face guarded him.....no1 else can/will score?

  2. You're correct he is a good shooter, but I'm not sure he's even the best shooter in the district... Wes Long from S'town can nail it from anywhere past half court, and with his size can shoot over most defenders. The Gobble kid from C'wood can fill it up also.

I agree Summerton's Wes Long is a really good shooter. i bet he hits it even from half court. I think that Summertown has overall the best well balanced team in the district, ball handlers and shooters.

  3. well u cant forget about that pevahouse boy from perry co. i think he had 50pts and also hit 15 threes against summertown over the summer. He is one of the best shooters in the state and probably is the best shooter in the state. Better be watching him.

You cant compare Summer games to scheduled games. In the summer, teams are usually half of what they will be during the season, due to vacations, baseball, work, etc. If he did score 50 points against Summertown in the summer, you can be guaranteed that it wont happen with Summertown's FULL roster.

  4. summertown has 4 Seniors

i stand corrected. Summertown indeed has 4 Seniors. Wes Long, Logan Harville, Frank Campbell, and BJ Scott. Maybe they arent so young after all. LOL, They still only have 1 junior, Briar Pierce. I dont know any of the Sophomores or Freshman.

  5. I agree with bisonmom.

Whay cant the coaches get together and come up with a flexible schedule that is easy to work with? A schedule that the multi sport atheltes are not penalized for having to choose one sport over the other. Maybe that is something each schools athletic director should look into.

If the coahes would consider such a schedule the small schools would have several great teams (with the best athletes), instead of average teams.

And I wished that Sunday was DEAD PERIOD every week!!

  6. If the high school basketball team calls one another and plays pickup on the outside courts or in the church parking lot next door are they in violation?

If the offensive linemen get together and lift at the local fitness center 2 blocks away from the high school, are they in violation? What if the quarterback calls up 3 recievers and meets at the football field to throw. Whose to stop them?

If the high school baseball coach has a summer team and takes off for 2 weeks and hands the reigns to a parent for a couple of weeks, does it really matter what's on the front of the uniform?

If the local high school team is playing for a Legion team or a rec team, should they forego their post season because the state high school association picked those particular 2 weeks to be the dead period?

It seems to me the dead period was for the over zealous high school coaches and not for the players. The one sport players get the same break that the 3 sport athletes get. It seems to me, that the TSSAA is not limiting the athletes from doing what they choose to do, but rather the coaches from mandating what they will do. Where they choose to workout or play affects that how?

What's happened is that the TSSAA has written the rule as absolute law which it is for high school teams. You can't extrapolate that to high school athletes on any team. There's no jurisdiction. I'll bet the school insurance won't cover an injury in a summer league baseball game no matter what jersey the kid is wearing.

    Well spoken and point taken.

But what if the HS basketball Coach called another HS coach and those 2 teams got together in the gym of the HS and charged admission?

If the county owned school bus that some of these teams use was in a wreck who would paid that cost?

  7. So if they buy a 2 button tee shirt with a different name on it and get a parent to coach them, you'd be good with that? Most of the time in a small community, the kids that can make a summer traveling team are the same ones that can make a high school team. You're talking about semantics.

If the exact same players as on the HS team, the exact same coach as on the HS team, the exact same uniforms as the HS team, ALL from the exact same HS play as a summer team, then yes, that in my opion seems like a HS team. Call it semantics if you want.

  8. Here is the direct quote from TSSAA.

"School facilities may be used by outside groups during the

dead period. They do not have to be closed."

They may have been "outside groups". But boy, they sure seemed (HS uniforms, HS coach) like HS teams.

  9. if they are not the coaches of the high school it is ok...and usually coaches do not keep books i find it very surprising for a coach to be coaching during dead period...we CAN play on the feild be we cannot use our lockerooms or our indoor facilty to hit and it is VERY unusal for any team to charge admission for summer games usually the only time we pay to get in in the summer are tournaments so the paid admission is surprising as well

I agree normally a HS coach will not keep books, but maybe they do in the Dead Period.

And as far as admission, I paid $2 to watch. Maybe the home team was using this as a fund raiser. Who knows. If you say that this is unusual I will have to take your word for it.

  10. If a weight room, football field or gym is classified as part of the "facility" then why wouldnt a baseball field be the same way?

I am a supporter of the Dead period. Why is it so hard for coaches to abide by?

Example: As i was driving home after work late yesterday I happened upon a rural High School in middle Tennessee. After all the talk about the dead period the past couple of weeks I couldnt help but notice the baseball field lights on and just had to turn around and check it out (curiosity got the better of me). THere on the High SChool field were 2 teams. Both in High School uniforms, umpired, score board, concession, paid admission, etc. I had to stop and asked a couple of non-direct question..........Q. Is this your High School team or a travel team. A. High school team.

    Q. Boy yalll look gud, who coaches yall? A. That guy over there on 3rd base, and see that guy keeping the books.

The conversation went on for just a couple of minutes, then i left.

Coaches are teaching the kids that rules are made to be broken(until your caught).

  11. I hope the formatting works. This was copied from TSSAA Handbook at TSSAA.org.........

50% Rule ??“ Applies to basketball, baseball, and softball. Participation (includes practice or games) during the school year on a non-school team prior to the school season by students that will play the following season on the high school team is limited to 50% of the number of players required to play the game (3 in basketball, 5 in baseball, 5 in girls softball). Only the specified number of students participating on a non-school team prior to the school season may be placed on the high school eligibility list the following season.

    Definitions:

Dead Period ??“ No coaching, observing, or contact between coach and players in sport involved. There is no practice, no open facilities, and no weight training / conditioning.

This same HS is having 2008-2009 baseball tryouts on July 2nd. I think that this school has found a loophole and is willing to use it to the best of their ability.

    What is the penalty?

  12. Sounds like someone has an issue with the coach. I would have to look up the rules on the dead period but it sounds like he is trying to find a loophole but that would be considered contact with his kids.

Nope, i dont have an issue with coach. I dont even have kids that go to school. But the same county wants to raise the wheel tax to cover school expenses. (And that does affect me.) I dont mind paying extra county money for education but not to fund sports team (including basketball, softball, etc) in the summer months.

  13. I have another couple of questions;

    1. With fuel cost at an alltime high, how can this coach also use a county school bus and county gas to transport his "legion" team?

    2. How can he also use the electricty on the HS baseball field (lights, scoreboard, etc) to also benefit his "legion" team?

  14. I just read in my local paper the the Coach of our High School has 9 baseball games scheduled during the "dead period". He is calling it "legion ball", but he has 13 of the HS players on this team. Is this leagal?

  15. My Axe to grind:

Coach has a winning program for several years but this year it is different. The school in question is full of great mulit-sport athletes. Our graduates have been offered to play in several colleges on athletic scholarships. SO why does the girls basketball team stink???? Because the Coach is a bully and just down right STUPID. He has run off the best female athletes in the school. If it was only 1 student I would say that the student just couldnt take it, but NO there are at least 10 girls that SHOULD be playing. Last year out top female basketball player, district MVP, REGION MP, scholarship recipent to a VERY well known college quits mid season. Why you may ask? BECAUSE THE COACH IS A JERK!!! HE uses profanity that would put a sailor to shame, he degrades them, the girls have no respect for him, and neither do the fans or parents. HE has informed the girls that what goes on in practice stays in practice. HE has instructed them to keep their mouths shut. I have personally seen the man CHAIN the gym doors shut so that no one, not even administration can enter. You can hear the yelling and the cussing from the street.HE has no idea how bad he makes the school and HIMSELF look. HE has no idea how many people dislike him. HE has no idea that there are several girls comtemplating quiting right now. And to top it all off---------------he pulls up 8th graders and benches the uperclassmen!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stupid Stupid Stupid Man.

I hope this paticular coach reads coachT. Because I would love to tell him that he is on the verge of losing his winnning program, as a matter of fact he may lose the program all together, if he doesnt change his ways. JUst because you have a teaching license, and happen to have a coaching job doesnt mean that you are GOD.

  16. what is going on in the 12a tournament? who will win it?

    Summertown beat Hampshire 79-40

Mt. PLeasant beat Perry County 46-45

    Collinwood beat Frank Hughes 50-33

    Wayne County beat Zion 72-32

****Credit for the above info goes to www.jim314.com

Therefore the following teams have been eliminated from tournnament play: Hampshire, Perry County, Frank Hughes, and Zion.

    Predictions:

    1. Summertown

    2. Wayne County

    3. Collinwood

    4. Mt. PLeasant

  17. I was looking at CoachT's win/loss rankings and was surprised to see that Summertown (so far) is undefeated in District play with 2 games left. Is it possible that they will win the district with a perfect record? And if so exactly where did this team come from?????
