Hope the weather works out for you this year!

  2. Just curious how many kids are in the weight room for the 2010 season. They should have started last week i think.Haven't heard anything was just curious. How many days a week they working out.

Lord help us!!!!!!!! Not another Sequoyah post. Let me sum it up; Yes the weight room is open, no, no one is showing up and Yes, if anyone did show up I'm sure they worked really hard. NEXT!!!!!!!

You know, if it is such a bother for you to see another Seqouyah post, you could just go on past it and not even click on it. As a matter of fact I'm sure the Sequoyah fan base would rather you do that than interrupt the thread with remarks like that. But then I'm sure that these topics are much more enjoyable than the ones on your thread; "Does this purse match my eyes?" or "Do my thighs look fat in this skirt?".

    GO CHIEFS!!!!

  3. The problem with football is not the coaching it is the tallent and right now we are not very good. (Quote earlier Post) I will continue to stand behind this staff cause one thing this team needs is stabilty.(Endquote)

My apologies in advance to the readers of this topic for the length of this post.

Mr. Knocker, I have no idea who you are, nor do I care. Your discourses with Dr. Dave and Red Nation have, in the past, mostly been about "parents" coaching, which types of offense/defense are better and just general ugly bantering. But your above remarks have made me so angry that I am compelled to respond to you.

First, let me say that the following comments should not be taken as a bashing of the current coaching staff. I know most of them very well and they care about these boys and Sequoyah Football. Some of them have been instrumental in getting my son back on the field, and demanding that certain of the older players (including my son) set an example for and push the younger players to learn and play with enthusiasm, drive and just plain hard work.I can tell you first hand that some of this coaching has been done by "constuctive" but forceful yelling and punishment for lack of effort or missing practices/weight room time, etc. But every Head Coach and his staff have different ways of getting their team to win and discipline is usually a necessary part of that

What I don't understand is how you can say that you stand behind "this staff" because the team needs "stability". Sequoyah's team was 4 and 6 last year and almost made the playoffs, with a makeshift staff thrown together at the last minute because of the ugly events that preceded the season. Granted, there were several seniors on that team who made a great impact. But a good part of the reason that they were able to perform well, was a solid offensive line and a defense which improved to the point that they could stop almost any other team, by the end of the year. Both were manned mostly by juniors and sophomores who were taught by the previous coaching staff and alot of those same offensive and defensive plays were used last year. These same starting players made the decision to go back out to practice and convince most of the other players (who were not going to play), that they were still a team, no matter who the coaches were, even though every one of them was angry at the events that lead up to the loss of their prior coaching staff. These boys DO HAVE TALENT and GUTS and DRIVE, and TEAM SPIRIT and HEART in spite of what most of them have been through. We all agree that we need coaching stability for our Chiefs, but stability doesn't mean much when you go from 4-6 the first year to 0-10 the next. IMO this season's disaster was a direct result of the staff's complete change in the offense and defensive game plan, moving some seasoned players out of positions where they had been the key to making the team work well, instead of trying to fill those spots, left by the graduating class, with up and coming players who were willing to work hard to learn, practice and mesh with the prior year's players in those positions.

The problem this year was not the lack of talent, but the misuse of it. Imposing an offense on a team that does not have the weight, height, speed or depth to execute it, putting players in positions that they were not suited for and leaving players on the sidelines who just needed some game experience to show that they did belong on the field were just some of the problems this year. Most of these boys still played with everything they had, even though their "supporters" basically abandoned them halfway through the season. Coaches are supposed to be stern and even get angry sometimes if their team is not executing the plays or not holding the offensive line, missing tackles or dropping passes, but there is absolutely NO reason for them to be telling them at halftime or on bus rides home or Monday meetings that they are all just terrible players and will never win a game OR that this was just a rebuilding year (the seniors really loved that one). That method worked out really well, didn't it! I cannot even begin to describe to you how upset, disappointed and dejected the 12 seniors are for not winning even one game. And it is not the talent of their fellow players they are upset with. And how many people stayed around for the final senior run at the end of Senior night? Did these boys play for Sequoyah for 4 years (most of them) just to be greeted by and shown appreciation for by only their parents and a few dedicated football alumni? Even some of the coaches left before the final senior picture was taken!Talk about kicking 'em when they're down.

If you think the "stability" of the staff is going to fix the "not so very good" then you must think we have a whole pile of superstars waiting in the wings of the youth programs. While that could be the case, the "not so very good" (and even some of the very good) will not even show up next year and that would be a shame for the athletes, parents and all the other fans of Sequoyah, who just want to have fun playing and watching some good old "Friday Night Football". Red Nation is right. The players do read these boards and comments like yours only make them feel worse than they already do. My unsolicted suggestion to you is that you try supporting and encouraging the Sequoyah Chiefs, in good times and in bad.

    Amen!

I'm right there with you Aurorasports. I am all about playing talented young players and building for the future. Unfortunately, I am not about totally disregarding the seniors that have wore themselves out for 4 years in the weight room and on the field for 3 different coaching staffs.

Not only did some of the coaches make a mass exidous on the seniors after the last home game, they have been doing it to them the entire season despite statistics and performance. Only two backs have averaged over 5 yards a carry for the Chiefs the entire season, both seniors, and neither one of them saw the ball the last 3-4 games. I'm no expert, but when you have 2 guys avg 5 yds/carry and they carry the ball half as much as a group avg'ing 2 or 3 yards a carry, that can explain some offensive woes. Not that I don't think they should carry it every time, but at least the same amount as the other backs in the offense. One of them blocked his behind off while younger players carried the ball into the end zone against Sweetwater. He was just as happy to see them get into the end zone as he would have had it been him.

I agree that these kids do have tallent, guts, and determination it is just misused or not used at all.

I agree that they should be stern and hard on the kids as well. But if you are told that you aren't any good, eventually, you might start believing it and that is just wrong in my book.

  4. I would really like to see the Sequoyah seniors get this win. I know it is a lot of Dad talking, but I would also like to see #32 and #13 get the share of the carries tonight. Those two have consistantly avg'd 5 yards a carry all season and their runs out of the double wing seem like the only plays that have worked consistantly all year long. Big rivalry game. Good Luck Chiefs, Leave it all on the field tonight.

  5. no sequoyah didnt hold scott county scoreless. scott county held themselves scoreless.. let me explain. scott had 2 touchdowns called back because of penalties. they would drive the ball deep into chief territory before they would kill their own drives with stupid penalties that i hope coach shannon and company has corrected this week.. scott simply was the better team. sequoyah took a physical beat down. ive never seen as many players carried off the field.

I don't want to be controversial, but the only Sequoyah player that was carried off of the field that wasn't due to cramping up hurt his knee tripping over his on player. Not to take anything away from Scott Co's team but the players being carried off of the field had nothing to do with what the Highlanders were doing.

  6. Guess it's time for me to chime in. First of all losing Steinhardt was a very big blow to this team. Yes Coach did move him to the backfield and I ask you if you were a middle LB would you want to him him coming at you to lay a block on you? Now when the team scrimmaged Wartburg we had problems moving the ball down the field when we ran to the side where Big Bell and Steinhardt played last year. Before the scrimmage was over Coach moved Steinhardt back to his guard position and we moved the ball right down the field. So I feel like if we struggled at the line of scrimmage Coach would have moved Steinhardt back to the line. All of this is now a mute point. He is recovering well but still a long way to go. Moving on we need Sellin, Arp and Wiggins to step up. Wiggins is a big ole strong kid and he has improved each year, Sellin is a Sr and this is his chance for some serious playing time, Arp has played for years and knows the game well. Now for the rest of the line Workman and Peels will be fine was glad to see coach leave them together. During the Spring plays run to their side averaged better than 10 yards a play. They know each other well and make changes at the line of scrimmage if they see the need and when they double team even I could get 8 to 10 yards running behind them. At the center position last year Roberts done a great job. To answer your question Slobber this year look for Pettit at Center. He has gotten alot stronger since last season and will do good in the middle. Now with this all being said can we run the ball? Yes we can run the ball we can protect our QB and we have kids that can go get the deep ball. So we should be ok Offensively. Sorry for the long winded post guys.

Good Post, B&G. You would know better than I what we have developing. In no way was I trying to diminish the talents of any of the kids that are there, especially Workman and Peels. I was merely expressing my opinion of how difficult it was going to be to fill in the rest of the line with what we lost by graduation and how Steinhardt's injury compounds that even further. Shear numbers dictate that it is harder to replace 3 talented, experienced players than it is 2. I would feel the same if either of the other returning starting lineman were hurt. I feel that is the o-line is the most important position on the field and experience and co-hesiveness at those positioins is imperative for the offense.

    GO CHIEFS!!

  7. Yes I agree with you that moving Steinhardt to FB hurt the line but what I was saaying is that he wouldnt of played on the line this year anyways.Stienhardt would help alot but I can tell that you are from Vonore the way that you think that he would make an impact.

What does being from Vonore have anything to do with it?

  8. IMO our line didnt really lose that much in the exectpion of Christian Bell that hurt our line the most we didnt really lose anything with Roberts and Stienhardt wasnt playing on the line Coach S was using him in the FB spot but the loss of Stienhardt really hurt our defense. We have 2 returning lineman in Workwan and Peels I dont know about the other 3 but I dont think that our line will be that bad where we will just have to constantly throw the football but thats just my opinion

Steinhardt played all year on the line last year. In the two years he has been starting at guard, I think he was as good as there was in the region. IMO if he was moved to fullback without a replacement that is as good as he has been, it weakens the line. Workman and Peels are good lineman but they are only 2 of a group of 5. The holes left by Bell and Steinhardt outweigh any positions that have to be filled. If you saw any of the JV games last year you saw that the o-line in those games was not their strong suit. Now that is not saying that whoever comes up paired with the current lineman won't do well. I hope they do, my kid will be one of the guys running the ball. They have had a year of hitting the weights, working out, and gaining maturity. I'm looking forward to the season when we can see how they do.

  9. I think the lineman will be okay, alot of people think they lost to much to rebound. But they were alot of decent sized kids on the sideline last season that should feel in nicely. In my opinion I would have liked to see more screen passes ran the last few seasons.

With Steinhardt on the sidelines and not sure if he will be able to play at all, it really is a big hole to fill on the line. It's like we graduated and extra starting lineman last year. I'm not saying that the line won't be alright, but filling in those holes will be the key to this offense going places.

Team looked much better at Heritage last night. Zitch and Whited had good games receiving. Pass defense looked much better than last week.

  10. Yeah, I'm not taking anything away from the run game, but I really beleive we have a deep threat this season, not just with Bell, but Martin has got great speed, jury still out on McPherson but I think he'll come along just fine. Who do we have at TE (or will we have a TE this year). Thought, Rogers had a great scrimmage, Rhino looked good also.

I agree, I thought Rogers looked good. Especially early in the scrimmage. We dropped a lot of passes though. Our pass defense had several holes in it as well. Hopefully, that was just a product of being rusty from dead period.

  11. For those of you that have asked Jake has agreed to go play at UTC. He had other opportunities but UTC is close to home(but not to close for mom to just drop in!) and it is a great school. He is glad it is over. He is really excited about getting a good education and getting to play football. They have a excellent engineering program and Jake wants to be an electrical engineer. He is working out like crazy and is now up to 200lbs. He hopes to be at 210 by the time camp starts. Jacob realizes the opportunity he has and he wants to represent Sequoyah High school in the correct way. There were some initial communication issues with UTC with the coaching change and all but Marcus Satterfield was his recruiter at UTC and really lit a fire in Jacob on his visit to UTC. Thanks to Bill Satterfield for taking Jacob to a practice after his official visit when I could not cancel patients on such short notice. To all of you that I have gotten to know and respect over the last several years, Jeff Roberts, Bob Starcher, David Gregory,Mike Black, Doug Justice,Pete and Scarlet Mosier,Jason Saunders,Adam Kefauver,Mike Peels,Don Workman,CH Thomas,Jeff Bell, and many others, thanks for your commitment, unselfish motives and dedication to the kids at Sequoyah high school. I am honored to have been abel to call you my friends. To the very very special kids I had the opportunity to coach and love I will never ever for get you and will "always" be there for you 24-7. I will still be around to help in anyway I can. Thanks to you all for a lifetime of memories, and Jake if you read this thanks for being the young man you have turned out to be (Hink would be very proud of you!) and I love you Bud.

Congratulations and good luck to Jake! He is one of many in that senior class that demonstrate what hard work, determination, and perseverance can do. It is a great example set for the classes that follow them. Dave I would like to say thank you for the advice and tutalige that you have given me coaching. From when we coached juniors at Vonore through when you coached at the high school you have never failed to point me in the right direction. The days that you and coach sauders let me hang out at practices and pick your brains for offensive line drills and skills were a great value to me and hopefully to the kids that I have been coaching the last couple of years. I really appreciate all of the help.

  12. You know at Maryville and Alcoa do you really think that it would have mattered what they run in LL, there has been alot of tallent come through those schools that led to their success.

I agree, there has been a lot of tallent come through those programs, but tallent can't win championships on its own. An individual's tallent is only good for 4 years if he has playing time all four of those years. Those PROGRAMS have been successful for 7-8 years which involves rollover of players.

Their crickets right now know the hole numbering system and formations that they will be using 10 years from now when they are in high school. By the time they enter their freshman year, they will probably know 3/4 of the plays they will be running over the next 4 years. All the coaches have to do after that is conditioning, reinforce fundamentals, watch film, and game plan.

The system (PROGRAM) allows their tallent to be successful.

  13. So Maryville does it and has success, one example. How many does it and are not successful. So now you are going to ask the high school coach who has only a limited amount of time, to devote more time to assist the LL coaches without extra money. Now high school coaches don't make alot of money so I am sure they will be more than willing to give up more time.

The High School coach's job is to build a PROGRAM. This program starts at the LL level. He does not have to conduct practices there. He invites the LL coaches to sit in on his practices and learn what they do and then hand it down. He gives them a copy of his base playbook so they can teach the LL players entry level naming conventions, formations, blocking assignments that they will need to know when they get there.

  14. The LL programs need to worry about themselves, they don't need to worry about copying the high school's system. Personel might require the high school team to change every few years. They need to do what it takes to be successful on the LL level. They need to concentrate on technique and fundamentals.

You got to be kidding me? I don't guess that part of the success that Maryville has had over the past 7-8 years has anything to do with the fact that their high school coach is involved in the youth leagues and they run the same base system that the high school does, huh?

Technique and fundamentals should be taught at every level. But if the LL teach them the same way the high school does, the high school coaches can concentrate more on the details of their system and not relearning how they want things done.

  15. The problem with the LL is the restrictions. I was involved in the Loudon Quarterback club years ago, and the weight restrictions are ridiculous. I could maybe see a RB weight limit but tackle to tackle should be unlimited. The kids that play first in High School are usually the biggest, but in this conference only 1 "green stripe" can be on the field at a time. So if there is more than one green stripe on the team, then only one at a time can gain game experience. Well they get to high school and and everyone is fair game.

The next thing would be putting in the high school scheme. If more LL programs would input the HS system, there would be less need for Middle School teams, in this area anyway. I know Polk Co. has, and I beleive Loudon started this year w/ putting in the HS offenses and defenses. I wonder League wide how many teams use the systems that they are feeder programs for. I know Maryville & Alcoa start when they are crickets. Look how it turned out for them.

There are no green stripers at the JR level anymore. There is only a weight limit to carry the ball.

Red Nation is correct about the coaching philosophies changing so much that the LL programs can't be consistant. I can't speak for the Madisonville program but I can assume that they are like us at Vonore and try to acclimate themselves to the HS system as much as they can. I spent 2 or 3 practices with the O-line coaches in the '07 season and tried to mimic the same drills, techniques, and vocabulary that they did to try and prepare the kids so that it would not be greek when the HS coaches got them. Unfortunately, those coaches weren't around the next year and they have to re-learn new vocabulary, techniques, and drills.

  16. I like the idea of moving Steinhart into the backfield that would help balance out inexperience by adding in some pure toughness. I was not impressed with Stewart in backfield, maybe a combination of Steinhart and Bell. But doing that would leave three holes to fill on the line, but there was some good sized boys standing on the sidelines last season and with the winter to work out and a spring under these coaches and they could fill the void. Can we count Fritts will he stick it out next season, cause if he does TE or wide receiver would get a huge boost.

Sterling would probably love to get back in the backfield. Unfortunately, from what I saw in the JV games, it would be devistateing to our offensive line. Not that we don't have potential there, it just didn't seem to gel at the JV level. I think with Stewert, Owen, Zitch, and we have capable backs. They maybe not explosive backs like Carson & Breeden, but with good blocking, they can do the job. Nick Brummett ran well in the JV games as well.

I am of the belief that you shore up the line and then worry about running backs.

The future is bright at the running back porition with Huffman from Madisonville and Steele and Denham coming up from Vonore. Even in the classes behind them, there is tremendous potential at the running back position at both Madisonville and Vonore.

  17. I think that Coach Satterfield is still yet to put his imprint on this program. Due to the circumstances and timing when he got hired he had to do some things that he may not have done if he had already been established. With that said, despite the loss to Notre Dame and not going to the playoffs, this season has to be considered successful. We were competitive in every game and especially against the tougher opponents and won more games than any team in the last 4-5 years. I honestly think had we played McMinn Central at the end of the season instead of the beginning we might have come away with a win.

Next year's team will have to replace some very key elements. With the tallented kids we have returning and Satterfield not having to deal with a compressed time schedule to prepare for the next season they may be just as competitive. Maybe more. Who knows? With the support and interest that Coach Satterfield is showing in the youth programs at Vonore and Madisonville, we are heading in the right direction, though.

Despite the next couple of year's outcomes, the Sequoyah parents, boosters, and administration will have to be patient and supportive of the coaches and players in order for this program to prosper. No coach can turn a program like this one around over night.

Good Luck, Chiefs. Can't wait til next year.

  18. Your right Warchief, these seniors have set the standard and the future looks bright, wish these guys were in the playoffs, but they went out on a great note. The best way to describe it was "total domination" by the first unit! It got a little ugly toward the end of the game, frustration was setting in for Meigs, heard some of the Tiger fans really bashing the coaching staff, the only thing I can tell them is give him time!

Steinhardt had a great game and season also, and he will just obliterate offenses next year! Think he should make all region, along with White and maybe Bell. Next year looks very promising, with three on line returning and lil Bell got some time the varsity. The JV this season did pretty well, and Rogers will be fun to watch next season. There should be a big group of freshman coming in, 19 from Madisonville, not sure about Vonore, but I do know they have a big bruising back in Cody Steel. Steel and Huffman, could compete for playing time IMO. Congrats on a great season and lets take it to the next level next year! GO CHIEFS!!!!

Steel will be accompanied by a shifty-fast running back by the name of Casey Denham (Shea Owen's little brother). Only eight total eighth graders playing at Vonore this year. Mostly Oline possiblilities other than those two.

I agree about Sterling. He became an emotioinal and physical leader on that team this year. He and Topa make a great pair of LB's returning next season. With a large portion of the Dline returning, we should be able to play with anyone defensively.

    Already looking forward to it.

  19. Sequoyah 39 Meigs County 14 Final

The game wasn't even that close. Sequoyah's defense smothered Meigs all night long. I'm pretty positive in saying if Sequoyah leaves starting defense in, Meigs doesn't score. They crossed over midfield to the Sequoyah 49 once in the first half and they started that drive on the 50 from a good kickoff return. #57 and #37 stepped up the D last night.

That was the best #23 has run all year.

    Way to finish strong Chiefs!!

  20. Just wanted to correct you a little. We will have 3 returning starters on offense all lineman and return 4 on defense with 2 others who have seen extensive time on the field this year and last. What will hurt is replacing the skill people. The entire starting backfield and recieving core will be new.

Sorry about that. Forgot about #79. I forgot a couple on defense, too. #57, #85, #66, and #45? I spend so much time at the games paying attention to down, distance, who runs, who tackles I don't get to really look and see who's out there.

  21. I'd like to think so. If given time, which no other coach at Sequoyah has been given, there is no doubt in my mind that Coach Saterfield will build a strong program. Next year will be a crucial year for Sequoyah fans. They will return only 2 starters on offense and 2 on defense (#57 being one of each). That's not to say that the kids playing behind them aren't as tallented, but you can't replace experience. If they can have a season next year similar or better to this year, then we will have definitely turned a corner. I'm afraid the fan base will be impatient as in the past and not let the program develop.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had either (a) the previous coaching staff was still intact, or (/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> Coach Satterfield been hired early enough to go through spring practice and hire the coaching staff he wanted. Now don't get bent out of shape people. I am not talking down the current staff. We all know, however, that he only had 3-4 weeks to get a staff in place and may not have been able to do exactly like he wanted. Then again, he may have. Who knows? It is just a thought.

  22. oh and since im on talkin about screw ups #37 is the most over rated player in the region. The only reason he goes anywhere is because of the great #57.

    GO VONORE BLUE DEVILS!!!!!

As a coach, parent, and officer for Vonore Youth Sports I am incredibly embarrassed by anyone who would call out any Sequoyah football players and insult them like this and then say "go blue devils". Of all of the players you just mentioned, only #21 did not come up through Vonore and he played basketball under the Vonore name last year. Vonore Youth Sports STRONGLY supports all of Sequoyah's players, not just the ones from Vonore, and would rather you not associate the Blue Devil name with a ridiculous post like that.

These kids are human and teenagers. I can assure you each and every player that goes into that game on Friday night is giving Coach S. everything they got and to insult them is defeating the purpose and breaking down everything that the kids have worked hard for since they put the pads on this season. The kids do see these threads so if you are going to point out any of them individually, you should be complimentary and point out positives. The insults and negativity can only tear the kids down and suppress their spirit. If the kids make mistakes (which we all do) I'm sure the coaching staff will point it out to them.

  23. In case anybody was wondering, former Chief Jonathan Jones - 1 solo, 1 assist at linebacker in Wake Forest's 41-13 win over Baylor last night. It's good to see Jonathan get some playing time. He's number 26 if you get the chance to watch them.

  24. This is a great topic. One that I am having to deal with right now. DrDave will probably know exactly what and who I am talking about. My son plays high school football and is a junior. He played quite a bit of varsity last year, mostly on special teams, but did get the occasional carry in the backfield and time on defense. After the season was overwith the coaches had nothing but high expectations for him this coming year.

Well, over the summer, the previous coaching staff has all left and replaced with an entirely new staff. They had their first scrimmage Tuesday and the only varsity play my son got in the scrimmage was snapping for a PAT. He got to play an entire set of downs with the third team offense and did fairly well when he was in there.

Now after watching this I was angry, but I wasn't sure who to be angry at, the coach or my son. Knowing that my son only has affection for football when he is at practice or in the weight room, I gave the coaches the benefit of the doubt and told my son to go talk to the coach and see what he's doing wrong and how he can turn things around.

Well, he didn't have that talk and continue to state that he is getting shuffled around at practice yesterday. My wife thinks that there is something wrong and wants me to go and talk to the coach. I tried to convince her that my son needs to be the one that talks to him and not me. Having coached youth sports forever, I don't want to be the parent that the coach grumbles about when he sees me coming.

Well, I told my wife that I would go and talk to the coach, but only to find out what he is doing wrong and how he can correct himself to get an opportunity to get more playing time.

    It is a horrible situation.
