  1. Hargis, Thanks for info. I think much has been made of coach williams and her club team of '18" and older. I had a Knoxville parent tell me it was nothing more than a recruiting tool for her. She was indeed in the gym around her team in Franklin last spring. Even though she wasnt the coach of this team she is using her 18 yr old team as an excuse to be in the gym. We each KNOW THIS IS A VIOLATION OF TSSAA RULES. I guess however you will indeed pay in the end. Everyone in the volleyball world knows what is going on except TSSAA. CONGRAS TO RAVENWOOD, I TOLD YOUALL SO!

WOW! You may want to check your facts!

As the mother of some Karns Lady Beavers, I can tell you that they didn't play in Franklin during the entire club season last year. If you don't believe me, check the SRVA web site. The Phoenix 17's played in Ohio, but Coach Williams was two states away. We played in Atlanta twice, but Coach Williams was 10-20 courts away with her team. We did REGISTER to play at the A-Game for a 17 Power tourney, but that division got canceled and we never played there.

I coached some of the Phoenix girls (including some Karns, Hardin Valley, Bearden, and Powell players) in Franklin twice last season, but Coach Williams never got to see them play in Franklin because she was busy with her team. We were also playing miles away at a local high school.

I have a 10-year-old daughter who was in the gym at Franklin on a Phoenix team, but I doubt you are worried about her YET!

The Phoenix Rising Volleyball Club has girls playing from 12+ different schools in the Knoxville and Morristown areas. It's not just about Karns.

I've been a participant on this site for four years trying to positively communicate about the Karns High School Lady Beavers and the outstanding players and parents that support this team and its coaches, but I've been heart broken to see the personal attacks on Coach Williams and the girls.

What have we ever done to deserve these attacks except want to play a game that we love, work to get better, and WIN!

If you've ever seen Coach Williams work with a team, you will quickly see a woman who is hard working, enthusiastic, patient and kind. She doesn't recruit. She doesn't have to. She is one of the best volleyball coaches in the Knoxville area who creates a positive, supportive environment, and players want to play for her. If you watch, you'll see a kind, caring woman who supports the girls, always has a smile and a hug for them, and challenges them to get better.

One of my daughters was ready to give up the game after a club season with a bad coach. In just three days of tryouts her freshman year, Coach Williams helped to give her back her confidence and love of the game.

If she is such a bad coach, why does she currently have four former players playing in the college ranks and more headed that way?

I feel blessed to have had Kynette Williams in my daughters lives the last four years. She has had an extremely positive influence on them.

And YES -- Congratulations to Ravenwood. They were the best team in AAA in Tennessee this year, and they proved it -- ON THE COURT!

  2. 14 teams will be playing in this weekend's Rocky Top Classic at Karns High School, Knoxville. You'll be able to see teams from Memphis to Bluff City, and representation from Kentucky as well.

  3. ORCAT,

Your unrealistic expectations for Oak Ridge are understandable, but your anti-Karns, anti-AC, anti-Catholic, anti-Farragut, anti-K2, and now anti-CAK venom is really over the top.

In the spirit of polite discourse for a sport of young girls, do you think you might tone it down a bit so the young ladies might have a better example of how grown women should behave?

CAK is competing very well in the AA high school classification with a roster full of 13, 14 and 15 year old girls. If they continue their progress, they may very well compete for a state championship in the near future. If not, I know that they will develop positive values like teamwork, committment, and good sportsmanship that contribute to the rest of their lives.

I hope that, you too, are striving to teach those around you, in a way thet benefits their lives.

    WELL SAID VolleySoccerDad

  4. Wow, what they don't say is that she has a LOSING record against the areas powere programs, ie.. Anderson County, Farragut, Oak Ridge and Catholic.

Karns better live the dream now, cause the ride ends after this season.

Orcat -- If she's won six District titles in 8 years, that means that Oak Ridge DIDN'T win 6 of the last 8 years.

With 4 Region titles, in 8 years -- that means she beat Farragut and Oak Ridge for that title four of the last 8 years. I've personally witnessed 2 District titles and 2 Regional titles -- oh yeah, and a trip to state last year.

Honestly, I'm not sure about the AC vs. Karns record or Catholic vs. Karns -- since they were playing in a different division. In the last four years, I've only seen Karns play Catholic once (a loss), and AC just moved to District 3-AAA last year.

I am enjoying this season. Karns has a great bunch of girls; a wonderful, caring coach; and a great group of parents and fans supporting the team.

  5. I am starting to have doubts about our programs direction. Some of our girls play with the girls on Morristown West. West beat us early and then played again in our early bird tourney where they lost to Anderson County in the finals of the silver bracket.

They played AC yesterday at the Pick of Dixie and the West girls said AC was a different team. Aggressive, they attacked every ball, and cut down on the rookie errors. They did not think we could beat AC.

I say that because we have more talent and experience that AC who starts 4 sophs as hitters. They are getting better each week, alot better, and we are not. We are getting worse.

The high school schedule is alot harder than club, and the individual games mean more. Coach Smith (our old coach) now at AC came from AC. She talked all of the time about "pride" and "tradition" and "the importance of respecting the game and the program" none of that gets talked about now.

Every year we think that this is our break through year and every year AC finishes at the top of the pack. Every year 3 or 4 of their girls go on to play college, then become coaches. Ours don't. What are they doing?

When Harshbarger left we thought they would step back. Coach Wade took them back to the state finals. Now that she is gone we thought they would take a step back but they are right back in the mix with coach Smith.

Look at how they influence Karns. Karns never won anything until Coach Seviers came. Where did she play, AC. Where did the setter's mom play, AC.

I am still frustrated because this is not club. These games matter. It is more than doing a drill to learn a skill.

This was a championship year, and now I have my doubts.

Orcat -- your assumptions and guesses are wrong again! Coach Severs is an excellent addition to the Karns coaching staff, but I think Linda would be the first to tell you that Coach Williams is the leader of this team. Since Coach Williams took over at Karns in 2002, she has recorded 6 District Championships, 4 Regional Championships, and just surpassed the 400 win mark. She was also named Coach of the Year for District 3-AAA in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2009.

Before Coach Williams there was Coach Terri Gilbert (who played at Karns and ETSU) who also led Karns to a number of District and Regional Champions and one state appearance.

And by the way, I didn't play at Anderson County! I played for Norris High School under Coach Rita Hackler and UTK under Coach Bob Bertucci.

Karns MOM of Twins -- SETTER (#6) and OUTSIDE HITTER (#12) and a future Lady Beaver!

  6. V2, so no one will misunderstand my post of the subject, a News article came out in the Knoxville News two weeks ago explaining the issues about OR and Farragut with quotes from the Oak Ridge AD which explained where the selection process was. That article from a reputable news organization is the only source available

Don't you think the individual being discussed is a reliable source???

There are lots of rumors floating around -- Coach Williams is going to Farragut, Catholic's Mike Jones is going to Farragut, Carmen Foster -- Director of SMJVC is going to Oak Ridge, Chris or Jay Hames of K2 have applied for both, Farragut assistant Coach Cleer is the leading contender at FHS, Jason and Deidre Keeble have applied for both, ORHS wants an alum, etc. -- but these are all rumors . . .

ORCAT seems to be the only one trying to pass off RUMOR as FACT!

  7. What has been talked about since Coach Smith announced her resignation is now official. Coach Williams at Karns has applied to be the next Head volleyball coach at Oak Ridge high school.

While this has been no secret at OR, here on coach T this was looked at as being odd. Williams is expected to be named before the first of the year.

WOW -- ORCAT, are you just making stuff up now that the season is over?

I just got off the phone with Coach Williams. She hasn't applied for the OR job, hasn't interviewed for it, and there won't be any announcements before the first of the year.

What have you been smoking ORCAT???

Your credibility just took a major hit with this one!

Why do you feel the need to make up lies about Karns?? Is this a new psychological strategy?

    AMAZING!

  8. ORCAT

How could Coach Williams junior middles follow her anywhere? Aren't there TSSAA rules about transfers???

Wouldn't they have to sit out a year since they have "an athletic history" at Karns.

Why would they want to? There is a core group of 5 juniors that have been playing together for quite some time. These hitters have to have passers and a setter to help them get the balls.

    Strange post!!!

  9. No doubt or they would not be here...but DB has real talent...Ravenwood has real talent....whole different level than others. DB was more than impressive today...great coaching, kids and parents...My question is why does DB have to come to state to see Karns.....Karns and a few others would do well to get out of their little Knoxville box....its a whole differnet world.

Hikerman -- check the Karns schedule -- they did get out of their Knoxville box -- During the preseason they traveled to Tuscaloosa for Univ of Alabama High School Challenge Camp; to Chattanooga for a Pre Season play day; and Liberty University (VA) for team camp.

During the season they traveled to King College Border Bash and won it (saw teams from upper ET, South Carolina, etc. -- but DB was elsewhere); traveled to Charleston, SC to play state champions in that state -- came in 2nd; traveled to Greenwood, Kentucky where they saw Ravenwood.

Unfortunately, when they got to Murfreesboro, I think we saw some first time at state jitters, but they return FIVE starters that probably learned a LOT this week. They'll be TOUGH in 2010

  10. Coach V2, glad you got on here. Don't let this fire you up too much. Orcat has now applied you for the OR job and made you State Champion in one night. You can handle both but wanted your approval before you left Knoxville Thursday. I have never thought of CAT being your friend. Be careful on your way to the Boro. :roflol: . And before this goes too far, Page although a AA school in student population, is just like any AAA school as far as VB is concerned and needs to be in a AAA District. They consistantly play that well. Those around Knoxville think the same of Anderson. Now we've got CoachV2 and the pageman stirred up as a kickoff to the State. Great Drama.

PHargis, you are mistaken. I am NOT the Karns coach, but a former ref, player, coach and current fan. You are right, the Karns family has never thought of ORCAT as a friend, but we appreciate her support this week.

ORCAT -- it's highly doubtful that Coach Kynette Williams will want to leave Karns even for Farragut or OR. She'll have 5 returning starters off this team.

    GO LADY BEAVERS!

  11. Here it now Karns beats Ravenwood in 3. Way to much bias on here (not earned) for middle TN. If you take Brentwood and Page out of the equation ET has better volleyball. Sullivan South; DB; Anderson County; Farragut; Red Bank; East Ridge, GPS, Baylor and Ooltewah are always great and better than most Nashville teams. However, on here the nashville posters make up polls and puff chests.

Has siegel ever won anything? What about Rvenwood?

Karns and DB will be in the finals!

ORCAT -- I never thought I would see you supporting Karns, but we really appreciate it  . No predictions from me. At this point, we go to Murfreesboro and see who comes out on top.

Best of luck to all the teams!

A special Good Luck Wish to our neighbors -- Grace Christian Academy.

    Go Lady Beavers!!

  12. The correct tie break is what happens HEAD to HEAD. It is always the tie breaker. In games played against each other OR won 3-2. When Karns figured that out they said to only count games lost to other opponents. Karns did not want to play OR in the semi's period.

Karns wanted OR to have to play AC because they didn't want to face AC in the tournament. This was unfair to OR, the best team in the district.

    ==

The 3-2 (games) you refer to could also be described as HEAD TO HEAD with 1-1 matches. As the district coaches agreed, due to 9 teams being in the district, they would play the first half of the season with 2 out of 3 matches and the 2nd half of the season would be 3 out of 5 matches. At the end of the season, the coaches agreed that a 2 out of 3 match win was equal to a 3 out of 5 match win.

So, again -- you look at matches first (15-1 for each team); then games (Karns loses one to Central by two points; OR loses one each to Central and Halls); then points.

With this set up for the regular season matches, Karns wasn't given the opportunity to beat OR in 3 games when they beat them the during the first meeting -- the refs stopped the match after two wins.

I wonder how you KNOW what Karns wanted. Is mind reading a new class being taught at ORHS?

  13. Orcat,

what are you talking about? Changing the rules??? How could Karns have possibly changed the rules??

It's my understanding that both teams finished the district 15-1. When going "head to head" Karns WON the tie breaker based on games lost to other district opponents (OR lost one game each to Central and Halls, and Karns only lost one game to Central) and when looking at points Karns had the lead as well.

In all the years I've been around volleyball, that was how you decided rankings -- matches won, then games won, then points.

What do the rules say that are different from that???

  14. KARNS WINS ROCKY TOP CLASSIC

Morristown East withdrew from the tourney on Friday morning, so the schedule had to be shuffled at the last minute.

Karns went undefeated for the weekend -- beating Sullivan East (2-0), Clinton (2-0), Stone Memorial (2-0), Columbia Central (2-0), and Madison County (2-1) from Alabama.

In the finals, Karns beat Madison County 2-0.

Madison placed three players on the All Tournament Team -- sisters Hannah and Collin Nichols; and Dena Pierce.

All tournament for Karns was Courtney Smith (Libero); and Ashley Ferris (Middle). MVP for the Tourney was Kelsey Handel, Karns Middle.

  16. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2009/sep/0 ... obstacles/

CLINTON - The Karns High School volleyball team battled tired legs, remnants of the flu bug and a talented Oak Ridge team Tuesday night.

Despite the myriad of obstacles, the Lady Beavers dug down deep to rally in both games for a 25-21, 25-17 District 3-AAA win.

Coach Kynette Williams' team is fresh off an appearance in the prestigious Porter-Guad Invitational in Charleston, S.C., over the Labor Day weekend.

Karns, despite having players overcoming the flu and strep, advanced to the championship match in the tournament where the Lady Beavers dropped a 25-23, 25-27, 14-16 decision to Ashley Hall, an all-girls' school in Charleston.

That's the only loss of the season for Karns (20-1), which is one of PrepXtra's top-rated teams.

"We're tired and we kind of limped through that (Oak Ridge match) - but obviously we can come from lots of points down," said Williams, whose Lady Beavers overcame deficits of 19-12 in the first game and 8-4 in the second.

"We got down a little bit and were just fighting the whole game," Karns middle hitter Ashley Ferris said.

The 6-foot-2 Ferris, a junior, had 10 kills, 11 points and two blocks.

Ferris and 6-1 Kelsey Handel, another junior, give the Lady Beavers a potent 1-2 punch that Williams rotates in the middle.

"Some days it's Kelsey that's on and some days it's Ashley," Williams said. "My best dream is both of them are on," she laughed.

Defensive specialist and outside hitter Mallory Bonee also had a stat-stuffer night with 12 points, 10 hits, nine digs and three aces. Setter Lauren Bonee recorded five aces and five points.

Outside hitter Caitlin Glennen and defender Corrie Walker are two of only three seniors for the junior-dominated Lady Beavers.

"Those are my veterans and team captains. Caitlin leads on the frontcourt and Corrie leads on the backcourt."

Junior libero Courtney Smith, a 5-1 dynamo, is another key player for Karns.

Williams, who has coached Karns since 2002, said the beauty of her team is that any one of her players can be the star on any given night.

"Teams usually have one big superstar - we don't have that. We're all doing our part. The biggest thing about this team is we have a lot of unity. These kids are close on and off the court. Of all the years I've been coaching this is probably the best-unified and cohesive team I've had."

If things unfold as planned, this also could be the first Karns team to advance to the state tournament. The Lady Beavers have been involved in sub-state play three times under Williams.
