  2. BigFoot,

Someone had told me Pickens was very good and we had seen them a couple of years ago. I finally did a little research and found the following on the South Carolina High School Web site:

    http://www.schsl.org/2008-Brackets/vb%20aaa.htm

    http://www.schsl.org/2006%20Brackets/vb%20aaa.htm

    http://www.schsl.org/2005/2005%20brackets/vb%20aaa

Looks like they've won state three years in a row at least -- but I quit looking after that.

  3. Karns Defeated Sullivan Central in the finals of the King College Border Bash on Saturday night to take the title.

Courtney Smith, libero, and middle hitter Ashley Ferris were named to the all tournament team for Karns. Sullivan Central's setter Lauren Blevins and Sullivan East's libero Blair Fields were also picked for the all tourney team. Pickens Middle Hitter Kara Morgan was also named all tourney.

Karns Middle Hitter Kelsey Handel was named tourney MVP.

Two matches standout from this tournament -- Saturday morning Karns and Pickens High School, 2008 AAA State Champions for South Carolina fought a tough battle with Karns coming out on top 2-1.

During the semi finals, Sullivan Central knocked off a stunned Pickens to win the right to face Karns in the final.

THANKS King for hosting another great event!

Red Bank too much for all-day tested Webb

    * BY ADAM GREENE sports@knoxnews.com

    * Posted August 30, 2009 at midnight

OAK RIDGE - Webb School saw a very long Saturday finally come to an end against Red Bank. The Lady Spartans fought tooth and nail all day to make it to the final of the Early Bird Volleyball Tournament at Oak Ridge High School, but finally met their match, falling to the Lady Lions 25-17, 25-12.

The match didn't start until 10 p.m. after a grueling day of matches. It was the eighth game for Webb (8-2), which beat East Ridge, Jefferson County, Heritage, Maryville, Farragut and Baylor to make it to the title game, losing only to Sullivan South. The Lady Spartans were outmatched in size most of the day, but made up for it with their tenacity.

"We're not very big, but we're a pretty balanced team," Webb coach Dennis Ray said. "We have to be scrappy on defense and pass the ball well. I'm extremely proud of what they were able to do today. The teams we lost to were two of the better teams in East Tennessee."

Against Red Bank (11-0) it would not be enough. The power-hitting tandem of Kalyn Helton and Courtney Lawson dominated at the net. Helton finished the game with 13 kills, two blocks and nine digs. Lawson had eight kills, 15 assists and six digs.

"We like to get it into their hands," Red Bank coach Christel Brooks said. "We don't want to mess around. All the girls have their strengths, but they are our power."

The Lady Lions took the court only minutes after defeating Sullivan South 18-25, 25-16, 15-12. The quick turnaround and long trip home to Chattanooga were motivation enough for Red Bank to want to put the games away in a hurry.

"We didn't play all day to lose this thing," Brooks said. "They went out and put a lot of energy and enthusiasm into it. They've been going all day and playing hard. They had a lot of energy and intensity in this game."

Webb struggled to string together scoring opportunities. While they could produce points with their own scoring duo of Kylie Pearson and Rachel Crist, Red Bank was just far too formidable up front.

"We had a hard time matching up with their size," Ray said. "They're big and solid all the way around. We didn't block them very well."

Pearson finished with five kills. Crist had three kills and six digs.

  6. V2, while this question is not expected to be answered in any detail and maybe by a yes or NO, the TSSAA meeting agenda on the 17th had an item concerning a Karnes VB player and some action which was likely insignificant. Will any of that be any problem to this years team? Yes, maybe, no.

Not sure about all the details, but to the best of my knowledge -- the questions have been answered and the misunderstandings resolved.

Was mainly watching Knox area teams and catching up with old friends, but can confirm the following:

Karns won all five of their matches beating Hixson, East Ridge, Notre Dame, Baylor, and Sullivan South.

Saw Farragut beat Cleveland and Notre Dame.

Was impressed with Farragut's Kylann Scheidt, as usual; but their Libero Riley Miller was very impressive as well.

Karns has some power in the middle (Kelsey Handel and Ashley Ferris), but this year I see a balanced attack that wasn't there last year. Bonee twins are maturing, and libero Courtney Smith is unbelievably fast.

  8. I'll be watching Farragut, Catholic, and Anderson County.

Farragut's setter has already committed to play for UT.

Veronika Cieslik from Catholic, a junior left hander, is very strong and a joy to watch. She is a true competitor.

Don't know much about Anderson County for the coming year, but they are usually very strong.

The sleeper team to watch is probably Karns. They've got a couple of 6'1" middles that are attracting some attention from coaches in the SEC.

  9. Coach, do you have your schedule on your website yet? You may not have had time. I've lookedfor it the last few days to see if the tourney was going to be held. I'll also put this on the tournament list. If you have a few schools participating, post two or three. thanks

Having some technical difficulties, but will shoot you the schedule via email.

Karns Volleyball Web site hasn't been updated yet, but can still be found at www.karnsvolleyball.net

  10. Stone Memorial beat Karns in the tourney finals to take the championship. Photos are already posted in the Gallery. Will try to track down the rest of the results and get them posted.

Both Karns and Stone went undeafeated throughout pool play, but Stone definitely dominated the finals. They jumped out early and took the first game easily. Karns rallied in the second game, but it wasn't enough.

A nice feature of this tourney, was that host KARNS -- made arrangements for visiting schools to go cheer on the Lady Vols volleyball team as they played Auburn on Friday night. Many of the girls and their families commented about that being a real plus.

  11. Here are the pairings and results that I know for now.
