  1. I'm curious why you're berating TNKO2 for saying something that I also said in my post, that TJ probably wouldn't have beaten Mang or Johnson. ghouse's point about difference of victory for a common opponent between TJ and Johnson is a good point and definitely makes that matchup closer. However if the competition in DI and DII in the individual tournament are even then winning a 32 man tournament is harder than winning a 16 man tournament. He's still an amazing wrestler to pull what he has, no doubt, but this debate between who's better DI v DII isn't going to end anytime soon. And consolidation won't help either, b/c people will still talk about "Oh, McCallie won 5 individual state titles, but they would have won 8 if it was still DII" or "The finals were basically Bradley and McCallie and Bradley won 4 of 6 finals, so DI must be better." What I'm trying to say is this debate is worthless.

  2. First, there is not way he is NOT a 5 time TN state champion. He lived in TN while competing in TN and won the individual TN state championships 5 times. That argument is stupid since there are people who I wrestled with who are not from TN originally, and I went to a public school.

As far as DI v DII championships, I looked at the DI champions every year that Duncan won. My motivation was to see whether he would be a 5 time champ at DI, or if he could beat the DI champ each year. Granted this is an imperfect science and based purely on opinion so everyone has a right to disagree. But in two of Duncan's championships, namely the first two he would have wrestled one David Mang and one Demetrius Johnson, who were both DI Outstanding Wrestler that year if my memory is correct (I know Mang is and I'm 90% sure that Johnson was). The others I think Duncan would have or could have won.

Remember that these arguments have no real winner and is just my opinion. I expect many of you to disagree, however he has done alot for his family and school. I wish him, and all other TN wrestlers competing in NCAA or NAIA wrestling, luck in the NCAA's.

  3. ok i heard about duncan doing a celebration after winning state his 8th grade year, any truth to the story?

Yeah, it was one of the most classless things I've ever seen on the wrestling mat. He took his headgear off and "buried" it at the center of the mat. Since then when I've seen him wrestle, which is few and far between since I didn't wrestle in the Chattanooga area, I didn't see any sort of celebration of that magnitude. Although when I wrestled him in 2008 at a tournament, he only minored me and he would not look at me or my coach when we shook hands. That is not as bad as what he did as an 8th grader, but it still showed poor sportsmanship.

Now I am not saying he's a bad person, I was not a teammate or classmate of his. But he is an amazing wrestler to pull what he has, 5 state titles. Granted those championships are in DII, but I have not looked to see if I think he would beat the DI wrestler at each weight.

Either way, he is an amazing wrestler who teams can only hope to find once in a generation.

  4. Lynx, The same thing could have been said last year and look, now we have double elimination. I wasn't bickering but pointing out the obvious. Sorry if it bothered you but this is a message board for wrestling fans. These conversation will happen here so to quote you "get over yourself". Just kidding.

    Good luck.

I wasn't referring specifically to your post, but to the general thread. And I am a wrestling fan and a wrestler, and I hated it when my teammates got bad draws when the tournament was a carry-tournament. My point is that double elimination is alot more feasible, as evidenced by Coach Blair's and the rest of Williamson County coaches' hard work, than a complete seeding that makes everyone happy. How would a region champion feel if the guy he beat was seeded ahead of him? Unlikely, but I can see that happening to say a Region 4 or Region 6 wrestler.

Odds are I won't be at the Ag Center, but if I was I would be more excited for my alma mater and to see some great wrestling.

  5. Nothing I've read here is new. The debates in the past have been good/bad draws and lack of a double elimination (which has been rectified). Bickering about who got a good draw or a bad draw is pointless and progresses no one forward. Get over yourselves and enjoy the show come Thursday.

Good luck to every wrestler in the field.

  6. Is this correct ? Is it this way in all regions ? Seems like it would be a gate killer

and concession killer day 2. Great for the kids and parents that finish top 4

and for kids and parents that do not ( as far as time and money.) Just seems odd to run a 2 day

event this way. When all year they were done with semi's and finals day 2. Is this a regional option or State rule. Please advise thanks...and good luck to all

I think on Sat that they will also have the consilation rounds but the semis will be Friday and the championship round on Sat. Dont quote me but I think I read that it will work out this way.

They do it to circumvent the 5 match rule, b/c sometimes in a 16-man tournament you can run into the 5-match limit. But that's not much different than how the State Individuals are run, with the finals and medal rounds on Saturday. So why the complaints?

  7. Peck does an extraordinary job developing the first timers into medalists and a well balanced dual squad as you will likely see this week. Again, no real "designated" feeder to build on. Before you comment, go ask the Ravens themselves.

Sunset is one of two Ravenwood designated feeder schools (Woodland is the other), and just finished their fourth year with a Williamson County tournament championship. They had 7 champions this year who Coach Peck hopes to see in Raptor singlets for the next four years. Actually, Ravenwood starters this year from 103 to 130 are all from Sunset. You are correct that Coach Peck is a great coach, but he does have designated feeder schools. Did you check with the Ravens before your post?

Only thing I have to add is that Ravenwood's mascot is the Raptors, not the Ravens. The 8th graders at Woodland voted on it the year before Ravenwood opened and they picked Raptors over Ravens and Mustangs (your guess is as good as mine for why mustangs was there, doesn't make sense for RHS. Plus David Lipscomb is the Mustangs, but that's another point.).

But good showing by RHS at the duals. Next stop is the Individuals for every team.

  8. Sorry to point this out WrestlingGod, but I believe that Indy is 0-4 against Ravenwood the past two years. But each of the three studs from District 12: Franklin, Ravenwood, and Independence, have two studs that no one in the district or the region can beat. RHS has Freeman and Hawthorne, Indy has Cox and Newberg, Franklin has Woods and one other guy whose name escapes me at the moment. Also according to the Tennessean RHS was up 34-3 before they forfeited the rest of the matches since victory was decided, so the score is closer than the match actually was.

What does this mean you ask? Ravenwood's fill-ins are better than Indy's fill-ins. End of story. But best of luck in the State Duals. I'd like to see a all Williamson County State Final, even though it may not happen that way for whatever reason.

  9. oh my god...that kid is insane...

    i'm glad i've graduated.

But it's good for him that he has found a calling. Maybe he can transfer to the midstate /roflolk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflolk:" border="0" alt="roflolk.gif" />

  10. I thought it was funny to watch the wrestlers when they got put out, the first thing most of them would do was hit the ice cream stand, and not just once but 2 and 3 times. I think wrestler112 got them all hyped up for the ice cream.

dude, I'd go through atleast 15 cones over the course of the tournament. that soft serve is amazing

  11. Simple, pick who wins the finals.

1 pt for each correct answer, Tiebreakers are OW and Best Match

    103 MAXWELL over Pitts

    112 THOMAS over Gardner

    119 BIDDY over Lopez

    125 LEWIS over Holley

    130 HOOD over Witt

    135 GRAHAM over Miller

    140 GRADY over Taylor

    145 COX over Bishop

    152 RIDENOUR over Sinsheimer

    160 PROCTOR over Disney

    171 YOUNG over Salada

    189 CROY over Kennedey

    215 ORFOI over White

    285 LEONARD over Peters

    BM 160 Proctor v Disney

    OW 189 Cameron Croy

  12. Thank you so much for the explanation......and can I just say, could they have made it more confusing?

I shall keep my little fingers crossed that little Ryan and Dustin keep on winning so I can get there tomorrow and see them.

Good Luck to all, including Clarksville. I live in Clarksville, graduated from Hixson and pull for Soddy-Daisy because that is where my nephews are.

if you want the condensed version of that. Just don't lose and you'll keep wrestling. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'm sure you've looked at the brackets, and if you notice both your nephews are still alive in the tournament. Ryan through carries and Dustin because he's in the semis.

  13. Let me say quickly what I do understand. I understand if they get beat like my youngest nephew yesterday, Ryan Gardner, he goes to the "loser bracket" or consolation rounds. I know he does not have the possiblity of winning first. Is that what you mean by being one and out?

I am still terribly proud of Ryan being a non starting freshman for most of the year and even getting here. Just had to be the proud Aunt for a minute.

Let's say that your nephew, Ryan, won his first round match at state. the guy who he beat is hoping Ryan will reach the semi's so that he can continue wrestling. however, if Ryan is then beat in his next match, then Ryan can only continue wrestling if the guy who beat him reaches the semis.

your logic is correct for a regular tournament, just not state.

  14. Please forgive me, I do not mean to sound stupid. I have been reading this site for the last two wrestling seasons you all are very helpful. My brother was a wrestler when I was like 8 or 9 and now his sons are wrestlers so I have been learning the whole deal like new. I do not understand the comment "one and out" I thought if you lost regardless of seed in the State Individuals you go to the consolation round. Am I wrong? /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> Again sorry for the likely very stupid questions /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

in a regular tournament yes, but not at state.

if you lose in the first three rounds, aka before the semis, the guy who beat you must reach the semis, or 'carry' you. In the case of Boone, he lost to Beazley who then lost to Jordan before the semis. Thus, Boone will not have a chance to wrestle back and place.

is it sad, yes. But it is the current system.

  15. Was Chase really the underdog? He was seeded first after all. Either way, great accomplishment, but I don't know if saying he's the underdog is totally applicable.

being seeded first does not mean you are the best person at that weight. Some people would have said Boone was better than Beazley. But it is still an amazing accomplishment for Beazley to beat such a good wrestler as Boone.

oh, and keep it going Region VI!!!

  16. [

I DONT THINK THE FERFUSON/SLUDER MATCH WAS "DEFINATLEY" AN UPSET. KELLEN HAS BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS. THIS IS HIS SENIOR YEAR. HE WORKS HARD AND IS AN AWESOME WRESTLER AND A GREAT KID! I FOR ONE WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM FINISH ON TOP! /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

When I mentioned the Ferguson/Sluder match, I was only basing it off of the rankings. I'm more familiar with the middle tn wrestlers so I know better those wrestlers and how they stack up against the best in the state.

  17. I wouldn't say that the Beasley Boone match was necessarily an upset. But the Dixon match definitely was. And the Ferguson/Sluder match could be counted as one too. I can't wait to get there Friday and watch that's all I know. Ha. Beasley still has a freaking tough road ahead of him too. Jordan, then possibly Penson, who he has had close close matches with. I would love to see him pull it off though. He works so d*** hard, in the practice room, and on his own.

I meant that Beazley/Boone was a close match, but not necessarily an upset. But 112 and 119 are arguably the hardest weights for some people.

  18. So guys, how about that state tournament down in Chattanooga?

talk about upsets and close matches, this one had it all.

    Beazley beating Boone 2-1

Dixon losing 6-5 and then getting knocked out.

    Sluder losing to Ferguson

what are your surprises about a fun filled day at UTC?
