  1. What's the word on who's going to Div. I this year?  Based on recent TSSAA numbers it looks like Forrest and Adamsville may have to go to Div. II this year.  Sny truth to that?  2 finals spots would open up if this happens.

  6. Okay, so it has been a couple of weeks or so, but I finally got the chance to post.

    1) Adamsville- WWII or WWI. Excellent show as usual, enjoyed the theme. thought they could have put a little more highs/lows into the music. BEST MUSIC IMO - 1st

    2) Cascade-Didn't really see them this high, a bit surprising to me. IMO - 3rd

    3) Goddpasture-1812 Overture. Thank goodenes for their visual package, because the music was a bit weak. Did not think they deserved best drumline over Adamsville. Very good drill, and deserving of BEST VISUAL, DRUMLINE, and COLOR GUARD. IMO - 4th

    4) Forrest-Very fun show, and I thought should have been higher. Very good general effect and music.

    IMO- 2nd

    5) Trenton Peabody- Good clean show, but I just never felt the emotion in it at all. Also, though the drill was clean, it never did anything for me visually. BEST DRUM MAJOR IMO - 6th

    6) Halls- Continues to be good, but just can't seem to make that leap into the top 5. IMO - 5th

    7) Huntington - Very surprised they made finals, but give them credit for making it. Not as strong or entertaining as in year's past, but still more fun than the majority of the finals shows. IMO - 9th

8)McKenzie - West Side Story. Still don't see what gets them in year after year. I saw at least 5 shows during prelims that I thought should have been in over them. IMO - 10th, or not in at all.

    9) Humboldt - They seemed to be the most excited about making finals, and I enjoyed their show when they played. Looks like a group on the rise. IMO - 8th

10)Houston County - Phantom of the Opera. Good low brass sound, and enjoyable performance. IMO -7th

Missing from finals after last year:

My personal favorite, and nephew's group, FAYETTE ACADEMY. Absolutely shocked that they did not make finals. Had better GE than half of the groups in finals. IMO - should have been in.

DCA - Down this year big time.

Oliver Springs - Fun show, and very good drumline. I was puzzled at the drumline recaps and their score.

  7. Here's my 2 cents:

    AAAA

    1-Roane County (DM & Guard)

    2-Bearden (Percussion)

    3-Anderson County

4-Greeneville (Did you ever get enough money for new uniforms? Great video)

    5-Rhea County

    AAA

    1-Cookeville (Percussion, DM, Guard)

    2-South Doyle

    AA

    1-Cocke County (Percussion & DM)

    2-Smith County (Guard)

    3-Livingston

    A

    1-Oliver Springs (Percussion)

    2-Polk County

    3-Red Bank (Guard & DM)

    4/5-Oneida/Stone Memorial

  8. Just checking to see what shows everyone is doing that were at Div. I State last year. I look forward to this contest more than Contest of Champions for the fact that I came from a small school, with a small band, and like watching what everyone one is doing. Here is a list of last year's finalists (I believe), and feel free to list any other bands shows that are doing as well.

    Adamsville

    Forrest

    Goodpasture

    Cascade

    MacKenzie

    Fayette

    Oliver Springs

    Huntington

    Donnelsville

    Halls

  9. Fantastic weather this past Saturday at the Div. I State Championships. Here is a recap of finals.

    10) DCA- (Superheroes) Nice beginng (Spiderman)with the percussion ensemble, but seemed to drag along the rest of the show. Never really seemd to take the phrase over the edge and finish their crescendos. Liked the chuck Taylor band shoes!! Weak hornline, really good guard, descent drumline. IMO should have been 9th.

    9) Oliver Springs- (Bon Jovi) Smallest band in finals. Probably the most entertaining show of the night. Big sound for a small band, but they sounded like they tried to hard in the hornline playing. Awesome trombone solo to start the show, and an AMAZING tenor player who played some smoking 4-malet stuff mallet as well. Good hornline, marginal color guard, top notch drumline. IMO should have been 7th

    8) McKenzie- (Don't remember the show title) I was suprised they were even in finals, much less 8th. Must have done really well in visual, becuase the hornline and drumline were not very good, but the guard made up for them. The drum major seemed to have some problems, and was a distraction. IMO should have been 10th.

    7) Huntingdon- (Jazz I think) GREAT TRUMPET SOLO!!! WOW!!! Fun show to watch, probably the 2nd most entertaining show. Really good drum major. Drumline was solid, hornline was good, guard held their own. Visual left a little to be desired. IMO should have been 6th.

    6) Fayette Academy (Santana)- REally strong drumline, and the hornline was solid. Could of used a little more "Soul" when playing this music. The best show visually of the night, from drill to marching, extc, it was all there. Executed very well, and IMO should have finished 4th.

    5) Halls- (Jeckyl & Hyde) This show never took off for me. They, like DCA, never seemed to go over the edge on the crescendos. Performed the music well, but it just seemed to lay there. Marched well, but could have done more. IMO should have finished 8th.

    4) Goodpasture- (Good/Evil) Interesting show, and a nice ending. The drumline was really strong, but hte pit did'nt seem to play very much difficulty wise, and I really enjoyed the feature. The hornline and guard did their parts as well, as the guard was really good. At times seemed to be drumline with accompanying band, as opposed to the way it should be with the drumline playing a supporting role. IMO should have finished 3rd.

    3) Cascade- (Pandora's Box) Volume wise WOW, but at he same time very over-blown at many points throughout the show. Would have enjoyed it more if the fans on the other end of the stadium would not have screamed at the top of their lungs every time a major impact point hit. drumline was very weak, color guard was very strong, I think the guard should have won best overall. Trumpet solo was too hard for the kid trying squeak it out. IMO should have finished 5th.

    2) Forrest- (A New World) Very similar arangement to Glassmen 2005 show. As always, played very well from the hornline to the drumline. Drumline was okay, but the hornline was really strong. Guard won best overall in finals. Marched really well, but I wish they would get new uniforms, they are so ugly. IMO should have finished 2nd.

    1) Adamsville- (Green Planet? Energy show?) Best show of the night no question all aspects considered. Very strong musical and visual package. Hornline was strong, drumline was strong (fun feature, and a really good mallet player), and the guard as well. Very interesting show choice and message to express. Definitely desrved to win. IMO should have been 1st.

This is just my opion let me know what you all think.

  10. I agree with brassman except that I think Central will win the AAA class over Karns, either way they both get trophies right!?!?!?!

As for the single A bands, I can only help you with what I've seen. I have not seen Smith for about 4 years, so to see them in single A is shocking. When I was at MTSU I saw them several times at different games and was always impressed the band and the drumline (guard let a little to be desired). I saw the Oliver Spings at state last year (that is if it is the same one that wore purple). They did a good job, and had a really good guard and drumline.

  11. Yes this is true but if it were not for the bands piggy backing off sports like football they could not get a quarter of the money they get from games. Face it no high school sports no high school marching band.

If there were no high school sports the number of band members would increase tremendously. That's what keeps kids from joining band, too many parents want Johnny or Susie to be a sports hero, and then they are not, and have nothing to show for when they are 40 years old except for a letterman jacket, and old "war stories." Band kids always have their craft, and can continue to use it long after they leave high school.
