  1. I'm sure there is a couple of knowledgeable football folks up there that would do it at no cost

No doubt.  I bet they even know how to properly give the score too.  Don't think I've ever heard a broadcaster say the score is 14-28.   Or even worse, say the score is zero to 14. I will literally turn a game on for a minute or 2 to find out the score, then turn it off, because I can not stand to listen to those guys.

  2. Haha yeah I laugh because they're so bad it's almost funny. The PBP guy must be ready for basketball because he referenced "Coffee County's basketball", and "Cavs will try to get the ball up the court" more than once last night. They also said "Oakland's ball" on several occasions.

A couple of weeks ago the color guy kept referring to Vince Johnson when giving the post game stats.

They don't know our own players by name & number and repeatedly call out the wrong guy on tackles, carries etc... Just horrendous.

The complaints need to go to WHUB. Don't think they'll really care, seems to be easier just to keep the old crew that does a terrible job than to try to find competent broadcasters,

  3. On another note, Lane Ward I don't know if you have ever listened to the WHUB broadcast of CHS Football. But it is the absolute worst play by play in the history of radio! I'm sure you may have heard this already, but I have to say it. Embarrassing! If anyone else listens to the games on 1400 WHUB give your opinion. Horrible!

Sure miss the days of Gene Davidson/Eldon Burgess! Help us Principal Ward!

I've been saying that for years.  Especially the PBP guy. Doesn't matter, basketball, football, those 2 are terrible.

  4. People "gripe" because there is potential for so much more here.  They win 20 games every year in a weak district with better athletes.  Class of 2014, undefeated district champs as freshman, not one of those boys was still on the team by their senior year.  This years seniors, same thing, undefeated district champs as freshman, I believe 4 are left.   That shows how the players feel, they get tired of putting up with the BS and leave.

Can't totally disagree about most sports at CHS being irrelevant,  you certainly can build more community support for sports than CHS does.  If Cookeville ever brought in a basketball coach and AD who had the passion to build a program instead if just having a team, Cookeville could be consistently among the top teams in the state.

  5. There must be a lot going on over there. I'm not really sure what happened to all the other boys but John Payne is my son, and I took him out because one they didn't even have him on the right track to attend a four year college, and for two I feel like they didn't appreciate him as a player. The coaching well i'm sure you know about that. Coach Herd he was great but nothing was played right or handled in the right way and never will as long as Bray is there as coach. I'm sure that is why everybody else as well. I have heard them all complain about the coaching. My son started today as a senior at Good Pasture and for once i'm feeling good about the decision I have made to get him far away from Cookeville as possible. I do want to say good luck to Jadon he will raise to the occasion he is the star of the team.

Shavonda, wish John the best of luck for his senior year. At least he went out on a winning note with the 3 on 3 last week!

  6. I agree that this was not the thread to discuss this, but it really didn't get out of hand. If it makes you feel better to think that I'm a disgruntled parent, that's fine.  I harbor no bitterness and wish these boys the utmost success.  I also return the wish to you of peace and happiness & hope you enjoy the remainder of the season.

  7. Freshman ball and varsity ball are very different.  Have you ever seen Phillips play PG?  If so, you must be a parent.  Because he hasn't played any PG this year that I know of. (seen all home games, and prob 3/4s of away)  I'm not really trying to call out who you are, and don't want to know, but judging from what you've said it must be the case and so I understand you must be frustrated by something.  or a friend of a parent who is mad... but i digress.

The Payne kid is the second leading rebounder to Bates.  That is a fact, weather you like it or not.  What is also a fact is that Kevin Bray has had only 1 losing season at Cookeville, and that was back in the Murfreesboro district (boy I'm glad those days are gone ha)  And has won 20 games in 9 out of 13 years that I recall.

I know you are entitled to your opinion, I just don't understand it.  If you want to argue with winning, be my guest.  But sounds to me like those others around you that have "the same complaints" just can't be happy with winning.

Is it your opinion, that he should not be the head coach? Or that you could do better? Someone else could?

Not sure if you are a Cookeville "fan" or not, but either way I only want peace and love for you brother.  Not trying to get things heated here, just discussing.

In reading your post, I can see why we'd have different views. You're happy with CHS being the Big Fish in a small pond. Winning lots of games every year, against a weak schedule, playing into a region game and going home.  I see so much more potential that just isn't realized.  One of the 5 largest High Schools is the state has the opportunity to build a program, that just hasn't been done here.  Middle school coaches have no connection with the high school.. Summer camps? Nothing to build up support from the general community. Go to a strong holiday tournament against good teams, not to a very weak one in Fl because it's at the beach. CHS should be playing the boro & Wilson County schools. Not playing the 86th ranked scheduled in AAA. (By the way, Coach T still ranks both Stone & Sparta higher than CHS, even though we're 3-1 against them.) Plus, I've seen multiple players get frustrated, including varsity starters leave the team.

I am a CHS fan, I'd love to see this team be mentioned as a team that can compete at a state tournament level every year.  haven't been following CHS basketball forever, only 5-6 yrs or so.  I've seen how many, many HS basketball programs have been run and see that there is so much more potential here.  Do get frustrated in that, but not trying to make it heated, just express my views.

Not trying to make this heated either, just expressing my view.

  8. We'll have to disagree about many of your points.  Definitely about Payne being one of the best rebounders.  Doesn't like to play inside and gets pushed around a lot under the boards.  When Buford threw the ball away 3 times in a row, it's time to sit him for awhile.  I know Carver was hurt, but Phillips is a good PG and Bates handles the ball at the top well too.

I sat with others who had the same complaints, so I know I'm not alone.  I'm just not impressed with Bray as a coach. Just don't like how he coaches games. My opinion. I know what they lost this year, but this years Jr class dominated as freshman.

  9. ok, here's some of my reasoning.  5 starters played entire 1st half. Could have killed 1211 zone Sparta came out with and didn't know how to attack it. PG threw away at least 3 lazy passes, left in game, his backup never played.  3rd quarter 1st foul on your best inside rebounder and he's pulled.  then, middle 4th, put in someone cold for 1st time in game. Never called To's to stop Spartas in late 1st quarter. Calling the 2 to's with.12 sec left did help confuse Sparta, but overall, Bray's not good at making in game adjustments. Seems to have lost fire, laid back on bench and team takes on that personality.  Won't surprise me if the lose a district/region game late due to a bad coaching decision.

  10. Close game, yep.  Great game, don't think so.  Sloppy, not well coached and was starting to become a personal battle between Payne and Henderson.  Cookeville missed Carver, Buford had some bad TO's.  I think the CHS/Stone game  @ CHS was a better game.

    I

  11. Was at Cookeville/Wilson Central last night and Cookeville played pretty bad.  No energy, didn't rebound.  This team can be good, but will have some bad games.  Not up to a ranked team level. Only 1 senior though, will be better next year.  I've been following this years junior class since 7th grade, has potential to be really good.

  12. I think 106.1 fm is doing it. They did it last week.

I think did had it on there last week because the Monterey game was on 1400.  With just 1 game, I'll bet it's on 1400.  Looks like I was wrong, pregame on 106.1.
