  1. Facts only,

Don't know where I'm losing you. Let's try this again..I recognize HC is very good and has played very well..however, they are not the DOMINANT team I remember from the past. A 2 point win over Rossview, 4 point win over Clarksville NE, a 3 point win over Memphis East where they were completely DOMINATED, and a 10 point win over Ridgeway back on September 13 hardly  leaves one quaking in their boots. HC can be beat!!! East showed that last week. In fact looking at the statistics it is incredible that HC even won. R;way is another threat and one that I think will overcome the Barbeque, horn blowing, tailgating ect. and step on the field as contenders and leave as winners. Remember it happens every Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

  2. visionaire,

In what context were you using the term "flame out"?

    Sincerely,

    FO

Don't get me wrong. In no way was I being disrespectful with respect to the coaching abilities of the staff (in fact they are quite impressive...You don't win close ballgames with coaches that don't know how to win!) Been familiar with James Counce for quite a long time and have nothing but the greatest respect for him..Guarantee you that nobody waa happier for James when HC won the State a couple of years back. He had been so close several times and something would always happen.Glad he got that one have such a long and storied career. Coaches don't win ball games by themselves! You can be the greatest coach on the planet but you;ve got to have a great supporting cast. i.e. Assistants and good players! Obviously you have the complete package! NOW...Don't base your opinion of this matchu[ based on the first game..R'way is considerably better on defense and offensively they will move the ball on anybody. I didn't go into shock when I looked at HC's schedule and noticed that this team did not dominate like the State Championship eras. I vividly remember Teague, the big fullback, and the other players. In fact HC had much closer games that I expected throughout the year. East coming up and dominating HC was someone of a suprise for a #1 ranked team. As for the weather, generally the larger team is the one with the advantage, however I don't think this will be the case Friday. Ridgeway is a much better team and determing the conditions will not hesitate to throw 7 or 8 in the box. Rain will not do much to help throw over a bunched "box"! Rain, wet balls, wet field, wind are factors neither team can control. I do think that unless R'way loses the battle of turnovers they win. *Kicking game could also play a huge role...with one team gaining field advantages (taking over offensively with short fields) extra points, field goals, punts and kickoffs. May be wrong...Sticking with my original pick'..R'Way wins this one.

Oh..I forgot to define the term"flame out" in the context in which it was meant..  HC has been ranked #1 state wide for the majority of the season. I think the star (exceptional record that has burned so brightly for the year burns out in the "quarters!) Good luck to both teams..Remember I have just been stating an opinio!

  3. I think our farm boys, duck hunters, and sauger fishermen will hold up well in the rapidly dropping temperatures and 90% chance of rain.  I hope Ridgeway can stay warm and toasty too.  They certainly aren't used to the weather up here in the North.  Maybe it won't start sleeting until they get here safely.

Weather calls for rain all day Friday 90% and 60% Friday night. If you're playing on a wet field, and running will be a priority..Advantage Ridgeway, for they have very good speed, and a plethora of backs! Wet footballs will also be a factor. Turnovers may decide this one..I sill say again..If Ridgeway wins the turnonver battle, I think HC flames out and Ridgeway advances!

  4. Saw the R'way - Melrose game the other night and was quite impressed with R'way. Offensively they mix run and pass very well..about 50-50. Will run their offense out of multiple sets. Patriots will need to spend extra defensive time preparing for multiple formations to have everything covered.   Defensively they have improved signifiantly over the latter part of the season. Was impressed when the #2 TB stepped in for the starter and didn't miss a beat. Kicking game leaves a lot to be desired but offensively these folks can roll. If R'way doesn't turn the ball over...in my opinion, 12 - 0 HC goes down in flames!
    Winner - Ridgeway!

  5. Sounds like East gave HC all they wanted and then some!!! HC will need to be at the top of their game next week. Drove into Memphis to see R'way vs Melrose. Gonna be interesting to see if HC 's defense can shut down the Roadrunners. Thing that impressed me was the fact that the starting TB for R'way went down early and the kid that replaced him was very impressive. Defensively R'way is fairly solid. Offensively they will show numerous sets with run. pass, about 50%. Kicking game leaves a little bit to be desired but one thing they can do is RUN!!! Should HC not be playing their "A" game, R'way will win this one and move on to the semis. Gonna go on the record early....12-0 HC goes down in flames on this one! R

  6. Several things

First..Do not look for a very big crowd from East to make their way to Henry County. They played Millington in the first round and had a very small crowd considering they only had about a 22 mile drive. The stadium should be dominated by a huge crowd from Henry that will be loud and vocal! If you don't think that will be intimidating and have no effect, you are dead wrong...May not be huge but will be a plus for HC!

Someone mentioned that East would get beat by a more disciplined HC team.. Can't disagree here.. East had a number of costly penalities at Millington that stopped drives and also let Millington keep possession several times. East was in the Red Zone twice when penalities, holding, false starts, illegal motion, etc  moved them out of scoring position which allowed Millington to hang in despite an obvious mismatch with personnel.

Looking at the bracket with the winner playing either Ridgeway or Melrose, I honestly think that HC would beat either one. I'm also of the opinion that should East win, they would lose to either two based on what I saw at our game. Could be wrong bu don't think so.

  7. Opinion and Observation....Offensively East will show multiple sets with favorite sets being and I backfield, a wing and a split. They will also go two tight with a wing..From the sets, Easts loves the power play and counter trey action. They will run play action off of these sets also. Good size up front with no fat bellys. Fullback is primarily a lead blocker. Will run the ball on third or fourth and short. Receivers can run and also catch the ball. Stunting in obvious passing downs will create problems for East. Defense is the strong suit of this football team. Base defense is a 4-3. Lineman do a good job of getting off blocks and linebackers fly to the ball. East will put pressure by coming off the edge also! Misdirection would be a consideration or counter action because of the fast flow of the linebackers. Kicking game...Kickoffs not very deep. down to about 15. Extra points are generally reliable, but SLOW! Field goals are out of the question from the 20 out. Punting game is not very solid.. strong rush and the punter has shown a tendency to hurry and not have very good kicks.

Opinion of outcome..Have no idea how a three hour travel on the road will affect East. The venue will play a big role in the outcome.. Walking down the sidewalk with all the tailgaters can be intimidating. I'm sure the stands will be full and the horns will be aplenty! If Henry doesn't lose the battle of turnovers, I would think that Henry will be moving on to the next round. I

  8. In Kenwood's 3rd year they did advance to the 1999 Class 4A State Semifinals. They beat Tullahoma (who was unbeaten that season), Pearl-Cohn (1996-19997 champs), and Whites Creek (19998 runner-up to Maryville) in the playoffs that November.

Remember this team well...Lost to Memphis East in the last quarter after being ahead the entire game..Remember the quarterback was a magician with the football..That was one heck of a good group!
  9. I don't care how "improved" Munford is...They can not compete against any team other than the Northsides and Westwoods out of Memphis...Talk about rivalry all you want..In a rivalry game you can toss out records, etc and it's anyone's game..Not here!! This is and will continue to be a non-competetive game and an automatic win in the Win column for Millington..They keep this game on here for the tiebreaker benefit (overall record) should playoffs be involved..and I don't blame them! Either way, as i said, the streak continues for Millington! No hating here..just stating the facts!!

  10. I did not ask for it to be added because it is always a close game, although Munford is improved, and we are growing into a new offense. It could be closer than you think. You are correct it is a big money game and it is still a rivalry. No reason to hate on us.

    "WE ARE MILLINGTON"

  11. You can't be serious!!! M and M Bowl...Munford hasn't won this or even been competetive in the last 10 years or more...This has been a laugher and is played only for the dollars for the home team!! (In this case, it also benefits Millington should there be playoff implications .. ie ...tiebreakers.. Otherwise, the only thing of interest here will be the Munford Band!! Chalk another one up for Millington and the streak continues!!

  12. Good luck NW.

Who in their right mind would even want this job???? Administration cares nothing about athletics..too many schools in the area..and N'west simply doesn't have the athletic firepower to compete. The only thing that even comes close to winning is the Girl's softball program and I understand the coach moves mountains as far as facilities, fundraising etc, is concerned. Easier to turn a battleship around in a bathtub than to win there!!!

  13. Finally a state title for HC! I've been waiting on this since I was a kid going to games. Congrats to the coaches and players on a great season! This is something that you and the community will never forget. I am very proud of our fan support too. A gold ball is finally at HCHS and the haters have been put to rest!

Congrats to Powell on an excellent season. You have nothing to hang your head about and are a great team. Mobley is the real deal but he isn't all they had. Good luck next year!

Congratulations to the Pats for a fantastic season. A special congratulations to Coach Counce! I've known James for years and had the opportunity to compete against his teams on many occasions. I am so happy that such a deserving person finally had the opportunity to win a gold ball. He has come so close with such good teams over the years and it is particularly gratifying to me to see him achieve this milestone! Again, congrats to the Pat Nation and to Coach Counce and his staff!!!!

  14. I coached for 30 years and ONLY feared speed when we had none, and our opponent had loads of it. While Ridgeway may have more team speed than we do, we have more than enough to make me not fear the speed of Ridgeway. Melrose ALWAYS had more speed than we did, yet we beat them repeatedly. Fairley had more speed than we did, yet we beat them repeatedly. East had more speed than we did and we beat them. I don't need a lesson from anyone on the value of speed, because I agree with you about its worth. What YOU need to understand is that we (HC) have quite a bit of speed too. One big problem that I see happen with MANY Memphis area teams is they DO NOT feed the ball to their HORSE!!! They are too guilty of trying to make all of their skill players happy. Mitchell gave away a state title a few years ago doing that very thing. Melrose was too concerned with making ALL of their skill players happy a few years back, instead of giving the ball to their HORSE enough (the guy who went to Miami). Another Memphis area problem...they generally DO NOT develop their kicking game...how many state titles has this cost Melrose alone? Does Ridgeway fall into these catagories? If so, Henry County will annihilate them!!!

Let's take the guess work out of your post. There are 2 horses on this team..Both will be fed the ball over and over again, on land and the air...The total lack of a kicking game of any description cost the Roadrunners last year and they have learned.."Those who don't learn from the mistakes of the past are dommed to repeat them."Went to see them last week to specifically check to see if this lesson was learned. It was..good long snapper, xpts and 30 yd fgs will not be a problem, punter is adequate! Qb has escapability and throws the ball well on the run to receivers that have been coached to come back to the qb in these situations..Deep threat at any time...I know you are excited about your defensive front...I can assure you that Coach Sutton has enough sense not to beat his head against a brick wall simply "because it feels so good when he stops!" ..Can't run through them, run around them...throw over them!..obviously 2 viable options that he will take. One other consideration is this is not a 2 man team...Exceptional athletes at DE, DT, and very athletic qb. compliment the Roadrunners.Hopefully all players will be healthy and both teams will play well.

  15. Glad you put the disclaimer about opinions on this one.

1,2,3 are incorrect - but not by much

4 ?? don't know how many secondaries you have seen the last 15 years.

It's the 'D' that makes this team different, although i expect Ridgeway to have a few big plays and score some points.

You definitely better expect some big plays by the Roadrunners! They're gonna happen. Ball game will be decided by turnovers! Can Henry maintain ball control thus controlling clock and field position and score. If they do, will be hard to beat. BUT, turn the ball over, give up a big scoring play and Roadrunners will be hard to beat. In case you are interested, (just for fun) check out Tn HS Football Power Rankings..Sonny Moore! Seems like he gives the Roadrunners a chance sine RWAY is ranked AHEAD of Henry! Will look forward to this game. Should be a doozy!

  16. What would you expect those from Memphis to do? They will go with their hearts and pick the Menmphis school. The problem is that while Ridgeway is a good team, and likely the best we have faced all season, they just don't have the team to beat us...not even close. There is but one way for anyone to beat this team, and given the 5A field, that can't happen. This game WILL NOT BE CLOSE!!!!!

Sounds to me if you're trying to convince the Henry people! Read your posts for years and yours concerning this game are very uncharacteristic for a coach of some 30 years. You better fear SPEED! There's a reason they say it KILLS! Henry has had some exceptional teams over the past and has YET to make it to the dance...There has to be a reason..That reson is simple..It takes a lot of things to happen to bring home the gold and they simply haven't fallen HC's way over the past. Ball has to bounce right..Injury free with respect to key personnel, got to find a way to win when you're not playing your best...and finally, got to have some LUCK! If Ridgeway comes in with a healthy team...You've got a load to deal with! Bank on it!

  17. I stand by everything I have stated so far about this game. Nothing kwc says (I have great respect for his knowledge of Memphis area football)has swayed me at all. The weaknesses we have cannot effectively be attacked by Ridgeway, nor any team who is left. Henry County wins BIG unless we have a game of 6-8 turnovers or an earthquake hits and swallows ONLY a majority of our team, and the Ridgeway team somehow remains intact. This game will be a laugher.

Only if Rway has one of their backs out are you a prohibitive favorite!

  18. I already have over 2 inches of rain in my gauge with at least 2 more expected tonight. Although sunshine is projected for Thursday and Friday looks like a wet field friday night. The team will be indoors today;hate to lose a day on the field especially since it doesn't appear to be raining in Memphis on weather channel radar.Does anyone have thoughts on how these things will affect Friday's outcome?

    GO BIG RED

Forget the field...the only question will be if R'Way has both backs available!
