  2. With the weight certification that now takes place most guys are probably 10-12 pounds over what they wrestled at the state tournament. Before weight certification you would have guys that were 25+ pounds over what they wrestled only 2 weeks after the state tournament. I have been told that when Mason McDaniel (Raleigh Egypt) won the state @ 98# his weight was 117# before the finals.

I met Mason McDaniel the other day at a homeless shelter. He told me his story... a very sad one. His mother had muscular dystrafy (sp.) when he was in High School, forcing him to stay nearby. So he went to Jackson State College, a small college in Jackson, TN. After that he was wrestling in world tournaments and other major tournaments having the time of his life. He got married and a few years later his wife committed suicide. After that he started drinking, it overwhelmed him. He became dependent on alcohol. Now he works with an organization called Matthew:25. They will help him get a job and they feed him. A very sad story but he has a very good attitude and some great stories. He is very funny and a great guy. AND he still knows a lot of wrestling.

  3. I have been told that Charles was an HVAC champion for MBA is the 7th & 8th grade before leaving for Blair. Often times you will have young men/women attending boarding schools for a variety of reasons. His residence may be in Tennessee but the father/mother may be alumni of Blair Academy. To my knowledge Blair allows all of their students the opportunity to join the wrestling team not just the ultra talented ones.

Charlie was a good wrestler in middle school but not great. He was a great athlete and is pretty big. I know charlie pretty well and he quit the wrestling team because it was too hard for him. From what I understand he is playing football though.

Nothing to get your hopes up about!

  4. I'm in no position to deny you or grant you permission for anything.

But in reply to your question I can't help wandering...

    Who's mat is it?

What does these rules state about wrestling for a club during this 'dead period'?

As far as I know, these rules are addressing the relationship between the student athlete, his coach (school employee), and his training facility (school facility) during a specific period of time.

I don't think that the TSSAA can regulate what a wrestler does on his own time as long as the school is not involved but I could be wrong.

I've never heard of a 'dead period' for academics. I've never heard of a student being restricted from seeking the help of a tutor during the summer to improve his academic success the following year.

    the schools mats?

  5. So let me see if I understand you here, There was never a punch thrown OR anything that resembled a punch being thrown?? So the ref just called the match a disqualification for the heck of it? Yeah, didn't think so.

And let's be honest while we're at it-- There wasn't a whole lot of rasslin going on during that match between BOTH wrestlers, which isn't surprising after watching the baylor HWT wrestle last year and again this year. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the baylor HWT DQ'd for too many stalling calls last year at state?

Furthermore, the whole slideby story seems a bit watered down and too coincidental. By attempting to defend the baylor HWT's name and character, you have belittled and insulted the MBA HWT in the process which is ironic.

I respect your brother greatly and congratulate him on his fourth place finish. He may not have purposely "thrown" a punch, but he think he was frustrated and maybe tried to snap him down or something and was a little too rough. From where I was sitting (front row) I can guarantee you that he was not trying a slide by. Again not trying to belittle Mr. Watson. Their was stalling on both sides, but hey its a heavy weight match!

  6. Thanks, SilverPie, we were leaving for lunch, and I wanted to watch, and saw what looked like a stalling call on Watson with 30 seconds, and then he pulled off his headgear in disgust....didn't realize the overtime, and thought it was stalling, wonder what the penalty point was for?

From what I have noticed none of the clocks went to the fourth period.... not the tableworkers fault. As for the match, In overtime the Baylor kid swung a punch at MBA heavy..... the refs let it slide. Then he threw another punch and the ref called it. All of the Baylor fans/coaches were mad because the match had ended in favor of MBA

  7. 103:Carlos Calloway vs. Cole Moseley- Carlos leads the series 2-1 this year, and the last match was a questionable one. Moseley has looked stronger in tournaments this year and looks very well conditioned in finals matches. My prediction is Cole Moseley wins by 6 points in a blow out. Cole Moseley

112: Zach Watson vs. JP Carney- Zach Watson is too much of a powerhouse to be stopped, I believe that Watson will win this in quick fashion with a pin. Mr. Zach Watson

119: Alex Manley vs. Daniel Baucke- This is a potential best match candidate. Baucke won the last meeting but Alex Manley isnt going to easily lay down for him. Manley will wrestle a very good match and Baucke will too. I think it is going to be a decision in the favor of Manley, but this is one could very easily go in Baucke's favor. Alex Manley

125: Michael Hooker vs. Stuart Doster- This also seems to be a good match on paper. Hooker won the last meeting 5-1 but I believe the majority of Hookers points were scored off of one move? If Doster isnt't thrown this time then this match could be a nailbiter. Regardless I am taking the Cereal Kid. Michael Hooker

130: Cole Hayes vs. Chase Brannon- This could be a good match. Chase Brannon is one of the biggest 130's I have ever seen and he has skill to go with it. Cole Hayes hasnt been challenged much with anyone from Tennessee this year, but I believe he will meet his challenge in the state finals with Chase Brannon. Brannon is coming off a very solid State Duals perfromance and I am going to make this the upset of the night and pick Chase Brannon, but dont take me too seriously ( I know no one does anyway). Chase Brannon

135: Cody Austell vs. Trey Stavrum- This also looks like it could be a best match candidate. Cody Austell has had a very impressive year only losing twice in matches that he was wrestling up a weight class. Trey Stavrum is greatly improved from last year. Austell won the last meeting between the two in a 3-2 match. I am going to pick Cody Austell to win in a close one. Cody Austell

140: TJ Duncan vs. Zach Johnson- Johnson is a great wrestler no doubt, but I believe Duncan should win this one. TJ Duncan.

145: Chanse Hayes vs. Nick Bateman- Hayes made quick work of Bateman in the last meeting, but I do not believe it will be that easy for Hayes this time. Chanse Hayes

152: Justin Cash vs. Chase Martino- Justin Cash will make easy work of Chase Martino. Justin Cash

160: Patrick Marchetti vs. Daniel Todd- This is always an exciting matchup between the two. Patrick Marchetti will have his hands full in this match, but it is Patrick Marchetti so... Mr. Patrick Marchetti

171: Wes Wesley vs. Mac Ferfuson- Mac Ferguson won the last meeting between the two. Ferguson has alot of momentum coming into the tournament, but I believe Wes Wesley will prevail in the finals. Wes Wesley

189: Max Jarrell vs. David Helton- This shall be a good one. Last meeting was a high scoring match with Jarrell coming out on top 9-8 en route to 3rd at McCallie. Max Jarrell

215: Cory Norcross vs. John Mackey- John Mackey won the last meeting in easy fashion but Norcross is no slouch. Norcross can be another candidate for an upset. John Mackey

285: Ryan Carrethers vs. Andrew Severson- Ryan Carrethers undefeated #1 seed vs. 2008 State Runner Up Andrew Severson. This makes for some good ole fashion tummy bumping. I am not too impressed after watching Severson this year. Carrethers has not had an off match all year and I expect him to keep that going. Ryan Carrethers.

Those are my predictions for State 2009. Feel free to criticize

    Some Changes of Mine

130 - I think that Alex Johnson will beat Chase Brannon in the semi-finals, from there he will go on to lose to Cole Hayes

160 - I think Daniel Todd is underrated coming in to this match. He has proven himself with his undefeated record. I think Mr. Todd will win this one 2-1

171 - Wes Wesley vs. John Floyd instead of Mac Ferguson. From their that finals match could go either way

  8. Well it looks like Simpson went all three tonight, Jarrel and Mix didnt wrestle. Let me say that by saying Jeff Francis is wrestling poorly, I mean he is not as sharp as he was in years past, but his poor is good enough to beat 90 percent of the kids in the state. Francis is a great wrestler and I am personally a big fan of his. Moseley getting beat by Davidson?? THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS. Never the less he was not pinned, which is a victory in a way. Wes Wesley took it to Max Jarrel at 189 despite the 20 pound weight advantage for Jarrel. Both wrestled a great match and it was exciting to watch.

Jeff Francis has a very hurt back and took the whole summer off, never the less the hip injury from freshman year is still bothering him. I dont know how much Wes Wesley weighs but Jarrel usually weighs around 180

  9. 103 - Mosley - Maj. Dec 4-0

    112 - Bellet - Dec. 4-3

    119 - Simpson - Dec 7-3

    125 - Francis - Dec 7-6

    130 - Simpson - Dec 7-9

    135 - Austell - pin 13-9

    140 - Agnew - maj dec 17-9

    145 - Bateman - dec 20-9

    152 - Marchetti - pin 26-9

    160 - Todd- pin 26-15

    171 - Floyd - dec 26-18

    189 - Jarrel - major dec 26-22

    215 - Norcross - major decesion 30-22

    HWT - Browner - pin 30-28
