  1. The reason that kickoff was given back to Brainerd is the kicking team may not catch a kickoff until it has touched the ground or contacted a receiving team player. On that play, Rhea County kicked the ball into the air and then caught it prior to it hitting the ground.

  3. Does anyone know how refs are determined for the playoffs? Do they come in groups or are they picked individually? Who decides what refs go where? I have always wondered this and I thought it might be interesting to see who all knows.

The state offices award playoff games to local associations. Then in turn the supervisors of each association assign the officials for the games. In the early rounds, there is a small chance that an entire crew that has worked together the whole season could go together. However, in my association, individuals are chosen to fill each spot. Hope this helps.

  4. First down, Team A is sacked and loses 8 yards. 2nd and 18. Next play, Team A gains 7 yards and Team B is called for a 5-yard facemask. Should it be 2nd and 6, or 3rd and 6, since the officials gave Team B the 7-yard rush plus the 5-yard facemask call. In the actual game, second down was repeated.

The officials got it right. In that instance, it is a five yard penalty administered from the end of the run and repeat the down. Rule 9-4-3h in the rule book. No penalty, if accepted, against the defensive team, Team B, can cause the down to go to the next one in the series. Therefore, it would be 2nd down again.

  5. Wow! I wish her the best but it doesn't sound like the best hire they could've made. Has this lady ever been a head coach before?

I don't understand this mentality that you have to have head coaching experience to be a good hire. At some point in time, every coach has no head coaching experience. That does not mean that they are a bad hire or a bad coach. Give the coach a chance and then make a decision on whether it is a good or bad hire.

  6. West is the only team that challenged them in the distrcict last year they blew everybody else out and they will be 2x better next year Bearden or Melrose will the state next year.

You must not count the District Championship game as a District game. Or you are saying that beating a team by 3 points is a blow out. Not sure which one is true. Not saying that LC will be able to do that next year or arguing the point that Bearden should be a really really strong team next year, but I don't think that they are going to be as good as you are speculating. I may be wrong. Again, I am not saying that Bearden won't be good. They very well can win the state tournament, but its gonna be tough getting past the Memphis teams any year.

  7. Was at this game n let me tell u it got outta hand QUICK! Congrats to Loudon for making this far, but they had a tough challenge facing the #1 team in AA...Loudon had an ok team but their coach didnt really look like he knew wat he was doing at times...since it was never close from the tip off i watched him for about 15 min to see if i could figure out wat he was tellin them. And from the looks of things it seemed like tha message was basically just play hard..from the talent that he lacked matchin up with fulton the score would have been respectable if he played a box-1...Congrats again to Loudon and GO FALCONS!! 3-Peat

I can assure you that the Loudon coach knows what he is doing. He is a great young coach in a very very tough district/region. I am sure that Jody Wright and Fulton make a lot of good coaches look like they don't know what they are doing. With the talent that Fulton has, most coaches in Tennessee will look like they don't know what to do to slow them down.

  8. You can say what you want about Bobby McWilliams but at the end of the day, he is one of the best coaches in the Upper Cumberland. He gets far more out of less talent than anyone else in that district. Been to 4 of the last 5 district championship games. However, lost to a team with more talent every time. In my opinion, he is the best coach in the district for what he gets out of his players each year.

  9. True, one game is not a good measuring stick but I was just agreeing with what Dyron Nix said about him being overwhelming and getting technicals. I only saw a couple games and that was one of them.... Also a close game in the 4th Q, not a good time to test the waters with the refs but it was just a freshmen game.

That is true, but in a varsity setting, he probably never gets the first one, let alone the other 2. Young coach who made a mistake. I bet he has learned from that mistake and never makes it again.

  10. Coach Wendel at Seymour is a good coach but I think he will stay put. With the new alignment he doesn't have to play AE, Fulton, etc.... Seymour will definately benefit from the new alignment.

Also I saw the LC freshmen play a couple times, they had a pretty good group of kids. One of the games I saw Kirkland get 3 technicals in about a 2 minutes span in the 4th Q. and was ejected. Sounds like Coach Stewart is a good coach and is a great canidate for the Head Coaching job.

I was also at the game you are talking about where Kirkland got 3 technicals. From my vantage point, he deserved the first one, but the second one he got while talking to his team in the huddle. Not sure what was said, but knowing the guy, I doubt seriously that it deserved a second T. The third one was while he was on his way to the locker room and I saw the ref say something to Coach Kirkland prior to giving him the 3rd one. Not sure if that one game is a good measuring stick to evaluate him.

  11. Well stated FBD. I am excited about Coach Wells. He sounds like a great up and coming coach who wants to be at CAK for all the right reasons. I am optimistic that CAK has a quality coach who is also a quality person and role model. With over 50 applications (I have heard that many were very attractive applicants), CAK had the opportunity to select the very best fit for our program. I believe that Coach Wells will do everything that needs to be done both on the court and off to give our team the best opportunity to be the best they can be, however good that is.

Coach Wells will inherit a team primarily made up of this years sophomores and freshmen that IMO have a lot of potential. They were far better by the end of the season than at the beginning, and I believe the large amount of playing time they got this year will pay divedends. Despite what some have said, I think Coach Wells will also be impressed with the support he gets from the families of the athletes. I believe he will have a team full of players whose parents will make sure that their kids are doing what he asks of them, from practice, to individual work, to the classroom, nutrition, etc. All things being equal, I'll take parents being interested and involved over disinterested parents any day.

    Welcome Coach! /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

CAK is getting an excellent coach. What he has done at Lenoir City and Loudon over the past 4 years are remarkable. He knows the game of basketball and is an extremely good coach. More than that, he is just as good a person as he is a coach. It would be hard to find anyone with the morals and character of Coach Wells. Should be a good fit for CAK. Hate to see him leave LC, but wish him the best of luck.

  12. Ya i agree. That game went back to bad coaching on the part of CC. Come out and pressure. Use the 5 second count if nothing else!!! I don't understand why some coaches combat the "freeze" with a stand there for 8 minutes D???? Oh well!!

Ya the shot clock would be great but when you are somewhere that has a group of Juniors running the clock anyway..... A shot clock would be a disaster!!!!

I see both sides. I like the faster pace game and agree with reffin that most possession are less than 30 or 35 seconds for most high school teams. But I also like the idea of giving the weaker teams a chance by letting them "try" to hold the ball. I say try because I also think that a good team can pressure the weaker team into turnovers and force the tempo. I would welcome a shot clock, but it is not something I would necessarily be pushing for at the same time. I am on the fence on this one.

  13. Thanks for the Congrats was you at the game last nite? Im glad you think LA will be one and done they will not beat Brainerd sorry to inform you on dat....... Grab you some /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" /> and watch the Panthers bring that Gold Ball back to Chattanooga.

I was at the game last night and if Brainerd plays as poorly as they did last night, it will be an early exit from Murfreesboro.

  14. Oh please!!! You think the "rules guru's" are going to do anything to make it easier!! This goes back to another post but i think we should have a shot clock and standardize, as much as possible, the college game with the highschool game. You know how hard it is to count ten seconds on Friday night in high school game and turn around and NOT count it on Saturday in a college gym???

I agree.... Make it more simple. Won't happen cause those shot clock systems are a little pricy and you would need someone at the table smart enough to hit a button when a ball hits the rim..... We can all dream!!!!

Do you mean not count ten seconds for the women's game? The men still have 10 seconds in college, correct? I am being serious, not trying to sound stupid. Do the men still have that in college? And I agree, they are not going to make it easier, just wishing they would. I am torn on the idea of a shot clock. I think the shot clock could be a good thing, but on the other hand, the under manned teams that have to slow the game down would be at a disadvantage with a shot clock. So I am up in the air on that one. I see both pros and cons, I guess.

  15. 'Horse Collar'.... maybe the fans are smarter than given credit. The 'horse collar' tackle will now be illegal in high school next year. They have just become more knowledgable about the rules and have no idea... still can't help them with the ignorance to offsides though!

You are right about the horse collar being illegal in high school, starting this upcoming season. What I was saying is that we had coaches yelling it last year, when it was not illegal in high school. I wish the rules gurus would get together and make high school rules match the college rules so that those who watch Saturday football would be a little bit more knowledgeable about the high school rules. It would also make the transition from high school officiating to collegiate officiating a little easier.

  16. PANTHERS ALL DAY!!!!!!! THE PANTHERS ARE STATE BOUND THESE BOYS ARE PLAYING GOOD I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF THEY BRING THE GOLD BALL HOME THIS YEAR

Congrats to Brainerd on making the State Tournament. However, I would be surprised if Brainerd wins one game in Murfreesboro. One and done in the State Tournament. That's my prediction. Would love to see LA beat Brainerd.

  17. Just let it be noted that I do not think that all officials do a bad job. I was at the McMinn Central girls game tonight and thought the officials at that game did an outstanding job. Did they miss a call or two, probably, but this is basketball and most of the calls are judgment calls. Overall, great job by those three men tonight. Glad to see three good officials working an important game like that.

  18. I think it's ok but if an official, teacher, doctor, etc is going to do so it must always be done tactfully.

I can agree with that. I hope that I have not come off as one that believes that you have to belittle or demean someone to hold them accountable. If I have, I apologize as that is not what I believe at all.

  19. Ah you caught me! Oh no I like opinions, I tend to get them everyday! However, I don't like the opinions from officials talking about other officials!!! I'm sorry, I guess I'm old school in thinking.. There are somethings we just keep to ourselves......

So does that work in other areas of life? Should teachers not say anything about those that are not good teachers? Should doctors not say anything about those that are not good doctors? Why can't officials hold other officials accountable? I understand that a lot of that should be handled behind closed doors, but someone needs to hold officials accountable and I see no better people to do that than fellow officials. I am not saying that I need to hold basketball officials accountable, because I am not one. However, the older, wiser basketball officials should hold the younger, green officials accountable. Again, just an opinion. Probably wrong again.

  20. AND obviously you have a crush on PressureD!

Awww...somebody must be jealous that Downtown247 does not have a crush on them. Seriously, can no one have an opinion that differs from yours?

  21. I will not have too much on your comment right now as we have to beat Tyner first to get to state. But, regarding last year, Fulton shot lights out and we couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Fulton was good no doubt, but they were not 40 points better or whatever the score was. I am not saying LA will it all, but this team can. Does anyone remember 2005's FB team? BELIEVE BABY!!:popcorneater:

    GO HOG-EYE!!!

    LEAVE NO DOUBT!!

Not saying that LA can't win it, because I do remember that football team. I just don't think it will happen. If Upperman can't do it, I hope LA can. Good luck.

  22. Last year I didn't think LA had much of a chance to win the STATE after seeing some of the other teams play. But this year is different! LA is playing as good (and probably better) than anyone in AA. My pick for state champs are the Wildcats of LA!!

Do you not remember what happened to LA in the State Tournament last year? I may be wrong, but I don't see LA winning the state. That being said, LA is definitely one of the best in the state. Hard for me to admit that, especially after the beat down you just gave my Upperman Bees, but the Wildcats are a really good team. I just don't see them beating Fulton or some of the Memphis teams. I could be wrong, will be pulling for LA and Upperman, if they make it.

  23. Wow. Where to even start. Make officials more accountable, Grade them fairly and objectively, reward the good ones. You need to skip officiating and go all the way to being a supervisor!! We don??™t get paid that much, the supervisors really don??™t get paid that much so who is going to do all this evaluating??? This is not a full time job folks!! Maybe if you paid $150 bucks a game for a ticket it could be and you would get the dedication that you want out of it!!

The coaches know the game better than anybody??¦.. Really??? Come on??¦??¦

I??™m sorry I have to stick to my guns. I was one of the most belligerent people to officials prior to becoming one. With the experience I now have, I know how to be a better fan, parent, coach and just person in general.

It applies everywhere. Don??™t gripe at your server at a restaurant until you have been one. Don??™t get mad at your wife till you have done the laundry yourself. Don??™t get mad at your kid??™s teacher till you have taught yourself. When you get the experience you can make an educated decision as to whether the people you are criticizing are doing a good job or a bad job. And odds are after being in their shoes you will respond in a more respectful manner.

Or you could just be an idiot and none of this experience will matter. You will get on a message board and dog out the very people you once were??¦.

I still think every fan should be required to take some kind of rules course prior to being admitted to a gym!! Sort of like a drivers license test! Take the course, pass the test you get to come to a game. At least then they will have an understanding of the rules??¦..

One time fee of $150 for the course and then you just pay $3 bucks to get in! What a deal??¦. I??™ll teach??¦.

Reffin, I like the idea of making fans pass a rules test to be admitted. At least they should have to pass one before yelling about the rules. I will be the first to admit that I don't know all the rules of basketball and I even coach the sport. I do know the most basic rules and when those are the ones that officials miss, I get upset. However, as you have pointed out, when you are an official, of any sport, it makes you appreciate the profession a little more. Now that does not mean that I can't have the opinion that some need to find another hobby. But I agree with the rules test to be admitted to the game. That was pretty funny. See it all the time in football, especially in the youth leagues. Go out on a Saturday afternoon and listen to all the fans yelling "horse collar" or "the defense can jump offsides as long as they get back before the snap." I understand what you are saying. Made me laugh. Good idea.
