  1. I'd have to disagree. Jennings dunked over a 6-5ish player. Wartburg's was what 5-10/

Great dunk, I have to agree that Jennings was better. He was running faster, had more power behind it, and was over a taller guy. The second video the white guy pretty much flops when he feels contact.

Look, people. This should be common sense but, it doesn't matter how tall the guy is if he does not JUMP. Unless of course, he's over 10 feet tall.

  2. AAA- Whoever makes it out of Memphis

This isn't one of those seasons. If someone outside Shelby County wants to win it, THIS is the year to do it. White Station is the only team here that is special. If they don't make it there, it's wide open. Unless, that is, the other areas of the state are down as well.

  3. That was a great team and one of the best to never win it but Whitestation had 5 major D1 guys on their team that year.  They were best team in state that year though Bearden got a lot of attention on the East end of the state.

So many Memphis teams that could've won it but couldn't get out of their region also.  A lot of Memphis teams have the kind of talent Bearden had that year every year.  It's crazy

I'd have to disagree with that. First, White Station only had 3 major D1 guys on that team(Hall, Jackson, and Hollins), one of whom was a sophomore(Hollins). Williams was the only other guy on the team who was D1, and he was more of a liability that season than an asset because of his conditioning, lol, something I remember vividly. Second, Craigmont, Melrose, Raleigh-Egypt, and Central were all better than White Station, not by much, but better, with Manassas just a hair behind them. I don't know about the whole state, but Craigmont was the best team in Memphis. They had a spectacular PG that year(Terrance Durham) who could find you wherever you were on the floor, and he had plenty weapons to find at that. Unfortunately, he pulled his groin after landing from a dunk in the District Championship against Raleigh-Egypt, and they ended up losing to Liberty in the Regional. Central was probably the 2nd best team that year. They ran White Station out of the gym in the Regionals, then proceeded to stall the ball in the 2nd half, lost their nerve, and totally collapsed to blow a 22 point lead. Outstanding personnel, but the most horrible coach I've ever witnessed.

    So I would say:

Craigmont in 2009 & 2010(both more talented than the one that actually won in 2011)

Raleigh-Egypt in basically ANY year. Jimmy Adams could get you there EVERYtime, but never got the big one at that school. The best team he had was probably the 2006 team that lost to Shelbyville in the semis when Hamilton went undefeated. But also 2008 and certainly 2009 when they lost the title game to White Station when FOUR of Raleigh-Egypt's starters fouled out.

    Melrose in 2009

    Ridgeway in 2010 & 2012

Southwind in 2010 & 2011(they were the best in Memphis that season)

    Central in 2009, 2010, & 2012

Manassas in 2008(I'm sure no one will disagree with that)

    the aforementioned Mitchell teams

Kirby in 2008(state champ Ridgeway lost 3 games that season, 2 of them were to Kirby, lost to White Station in the Region semis)

And we don't have "alot of teams with the talent Bearden had every year". We have several teams with comparable talent most of the time, and once in a while we have a juggernaut year like 2010 or 2012

  4. Dyer County may can make another run to state in AAA, Simeon is on the same level of White Station and Hamiliton. But they have to rebound better though

Hamilton is clearly not on the same level with White Station and Simeon. White Station is the only team in Shelby County that has any hint of being special. And even they aren't consistent with it.

  5. I would love to see BTW start back playing Ridgeway and Melrose. If you know any thing about Tennessee high school Basketball then you would see that all three of theses teams were in the same 2A league a few years ago and BTW used to beat up on em both. And all three teams were always contenders for the 2A title. So yes, I would love to see these three Memphis powers crank it back up

Ridgeway hasn't been in 2A since 2003, and they weren't in the same league as BTW. Nor was Melrose a real contender back then. Ridgeway was, Carver was, BTW was, Raleigh-Egypt was, even Trezevant at one point. Exactly what do you mean by "a few years ago"?

  6. Amen, Yankee. Liberty was good last year but not in the same class as White Station, Southwind, Melrose and champion Craigmont. Liberty is in AA because they couldn't get to state in AAA. They had over 1100 kids a couple of years ago, lost both times in the playoffs and now their enrollment is down to around 750. Where did about 400 students go and why. TSSAA needs to look at these so called "magnet" schools. Lots of them making it to the Boro and obviously some can control their enrollment. If Liberty could have competed at AAA level they would still be there, but obviously they couldn't.

You can throw Ridgeway, East, Central, and Whitehaven in that group as well. Liberty would've had a world of a time dealing with any of them.

  7. tech had 2 players at 6'6...size was not an issue...were not gona agree...but 3A was weaker last year than it has been the last several...like i said i saw all those teams play in person...saw the DC white station game in memphis...saw germantown and central right before that...craigmont came to liberty before season to play in some scrimmages...tech was the best team last season...i wont say 2A is better every year...but last year they were...theres a reason none of ur 2A teams from memphis make it to the boro anymore...its been dominated by liberty and bolivar...and yes i know those 2A teams also get beat by the memphis 3A teams...not last year but 2 years ago memphis had 5 teams ranked in the top 100...im well aware believe me...not disrespectin...but that was 2 years ago...

    1. Southwind played Central at the Forum on MLK day when White Station played DC, not Germantown.

    2. Liberty might have had 2 players at 6'6, but the overall size that Central and White Station had last year would've made a difference.

    3. And this is the point. AAA IS indeed a whole different monster than AA. LIBERTY(ONE team) might be able to compete on that level(as they've done when they were on that level), but the CLASS is not nearly as good OVERALL. I mean, you admitted it in your own post: the same 2 schools dominate the class. Ridgeway beat Bolivar twice last season, btw.

  8. Oh ok thanks for the clarification. How does Craigmont compare to Ws?? I havent seen them since last year?

Similar in that they use alot of inexperienced guards. But Craigmont's guards are more skilled. And their post players are most consistent and physical. Like most Memphis teams though, Craigmont's halfcourt game is extremely lacking. But the fullcourt pressure is terrible to face. White Station's guards would most likely fold up against it. But in a halfcourt game, it would be all Spartans, no question.

  9. LOL at this being an "upset". Craigmont is a superior team: deeper, more athletic(if you actually understand the game). Melrose couldn't handle their pressure AT ALL. And this is the 2nd time Craigmont's beaten them this season. In the other win, Craigmont was up 20 at halftime. They're just a better team.

    And @terop,

Craigmont was the one who blew the 2nd half lead, should've put the game away earlier than they did. Melrose was up at halftime, but Craigmont controlled the 2nd half.

  10. Firestone,

Mark my words Nino Johnson will be a high major recruit. Wait and see. I know some don't believe that but he will be. Just don't get on here singing his praises next season when I turn out to be right. Trust me when I say he has been getting some attention already.

I'm sure he gets plenty of attention and offers. But from what I've seen this season and last, he is not a Big 6 player. Has size and strength, and will get D1 offers just from that. Most coaches do consider potential. He has no one-on-one post moves, travels or turns it over almost every time he's in that position, and only seems to be a consistent factor as a "garbage man". Physically, he has the POTENTIAL and maybe WILL be, but as of YET, he IS not a HIGH major recruit. And mark my words, unless his game changes drastically, I won't be singing his praises next season. I'm not the one to do that. Just like the young man Jalen Steele, he signed with Auburn and I still don't sing his praises. Kid couldn't dribble, though I haven't seen whether or not he can now. LOL

  11. Question for all you basketball nostalgia people. Would you consider DC a bigger underdog against Whitestation in the big orange pressure cooker or DC vs BTW @ BTW in 2001 when BTW was stacked, nationally ranked and got beat by DC? Just a question that probably only a select few could answer objectively. Personally I think the BTW game was the biggest win in school history and, would be a much bigger upset that DC over WS. I've seen both teams play and feel that WS is the better team but, as has been proven time and time again, in sub-state you only have to be the best team on that day.

    FYI:

In 2001, BTW WON STATE, with Taurean Moy setting the all-time state tournament record for 3-pointers made, and a freshman by the name of Andre Allen winning State Tournament MVP honors. They beat Austin-East in the Final, the 3rd consecutive year Austin-East got to the State Championship game and lost to a Memphis opponent(Ridgeway in 2000 and Carver in 1999)

The year DC beat BTW in sub-state was 2002, after Moy graduating. And that game was NOT at BTW. It, as well as the Ridgeway/Haywood game were BOTH at the Mid-South Coliseum. This very website even has the pictures.

And, i think that in this game, considering White Station is nationally ranked in Rivals and was pre-season top 25 in USA Today, and also is led by a McDonald's All-American who'll likely be 1-and-done in college, DC is probably a bigger underdog. And trust me, White Station plays ALOT better on the road than they do at home.

Oh yeah, and to yankees: Nino Johnson is FAR from a high-major talent.

  12. With the way the 2 teams have been playing lately, I think Southwind finally gets over the hump tomorrow night. And u better expect them to bring their Grade A-plus plus game. Ridgeway has to go back and get that fire they had up until the last 2 weeks. I think Henning can get his troops up for it, and it'll be a classic.

But again, this Melrose/WS game was just everything you could want. Loved it.

  13. One of the best games I've seen in a long time. The players decided that one. Melrose just too deep, athletic, and physical. Hollins and Burton didn't assert themselves in the second half. Or Maybe the Melrose defense took them out of the game. Jackson played like Jackson. And I like how JJ went to the 2 young men and sat his starting juniors and senior. They both played well, especially Hampton.

  14. LOL. Where in the world has this guy been?^^^^^

Golden is the player a true basketball fan loves to watch. He'll play his role, whether it's star or supporter, and he has fun doing it and doing it hard. Gotta love him. Right now I'd take him over any other player in the City of Memphis regardless of class(call me crazy if u want). A coach's dream.

  15. Jalen Steele should NOT be in the discussion. His handles are non-existent(unless he's improved in that area, DRASTICALLY)

U must not have seen Ridgeway play much, because Corieon Pearson and Darryl Marshall are both true PGs. And Marshall is ALWAYS bringing the ball up to set the offense. Others bring it up but that's just because Ridgeway runs at EVERY opportunity. But when it's not a fastbreak, it's ALWAYS Marshall(or Pearson when he's in for Marshall).

  16. I cant believe that Tony Delk from Haywood Co. and Cannon Whitby from Obion Central were left out of everyone's list. And, I really cant believe that nobody has mentioned Penny Hardaway from Memphis Treadwell! Also, what about Bobby Parks from Middleton? Wow, what a basketball player. And, from long, long ago, Bailey Howell from Middleton, who went on to play for Miss. St. and played in the NBA. Also, a Reaves fella from Bolivar was tough. He also went on to play in the NBA.

Also, back when I was in high school, Bolivar had two fellas that could play ball with anyone...Elvis Mitchell and Jose Crisp. Elvis was a shooting machine, and Jose was a 6'8" bruiser, who led the nation in rebounding at Tenn. St.

    THIS DECADE!!!! That's from 2000-2010

LOL, people don't pay ANY attention these days. Just messin with ya :thumb:

  17. 74-59 Ridgeway, I think. Craigmont came out WAY too shaky. Those young players needed a game like this under their belts before the post-season. You're talking about 2 great pressure defenses out there. Durham played well despite foul trouble. Brewer took over and powered the offense for Ridgeway. He was the difference. Other than that, both teams struggled with each other's pressure.
