  1. basket case mom 3 you came to a football thread first so every other team please dont take offence but girls basketball is a great perticapation sport , all the games i have ever been to is about as much fun as watching paint dry. sorry for that, but as long as west hickman does not win i will be happy.

Two things you need to do eagleheart. #1. You need to invest in a good spellcheck program (perticapation) #2. The next time you use an analogy regarding girls basketball, rather than using the "watching paint dry" phrase, why don't you say something that makes more sense like, I don't know, watching an East Eagle football game :)

  2. Does anyone think that games are purposely lost or thrown for the benefit of better chances of winning on down the road, especially at tournament time? Some buddies of mine at work were talking about it the other day around the water cooler and got me to thinking. I know I have heard of the possibility of it having happened at the professional and college ranks but had not thought that much about it at the high school level. I don't guess there is really any kind of rule against it but it seems to me that it takes away the true spirit and meaning of playing the games in the first place. Should you always play to win or should you do what will get your team the farthest down the road, even if it means throwing one? Not looking for specific teams or coaches ..... just wondering if anyone has first hand knowledge of it actually happening.

  3. Before I start, let me say that, in my opinion, the best officiating crew I've seen all year...heck, for many years...called the game between Goodpasture and Greenbrier last night. GREAT job, guys!, whoever you are. Also, I'm a GB parent and we lost...after having a big lead late in the game.

I heard Roy Williams quoted as saying today's game has gone from basketball as it was originally meant to be played to hand-to-hand combat. I agree wholeheartedly. The only ones that can control that, though, are the hired guns: Coaches and refs. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that either one cares enough about their chosen profession - and I use that term VERY lightly regarding referees even though they are paid VERY well - to properly exercise their authority. I hold the T$$AA 100% responsible for the digression of this wonderful game. It's a shame today's superior athletes work so hard on getting better only to be physically assaulted almost while trying to play the game the way it's supposed to be played. Hand-checking and pushing off are done to gain an advantage and ARE fouls. So, call it. I don't care if you foul out the whole team. Enforce the rules! It's your job!

One last thought on this and I'll get off my soapbox: I believe that most refs know...I mean are aware of...the game and the rules...and absolutely, nobody's perfect. My biggest problem with them is that the majority are so ARROGANT and let the fans' emotions and comments affect their judgment during the heat of the battle. I say if you can't take it, quit. The game will be better for it. And stop making that stupid statement before each game reminding us that derogatory and inflammatory comments shouldn't be used (vulgar, I agree, but I don't know if it even says that :geek: ). If you're gonna do that, you should also give us a customer service (fans are paying customers, big-time) phone number to call when we need to report incompetent and arrogant referees.

    My 2¢.

Awesome last paragraph!! Ditto, Ditto Ditto :popcorneater:

  4. It has been my experience that often times the parent is the one who has far more concern over playing time than the player themselves. Any coach worth their salt and wanting to keep their job is gonna play the best players they have, period. Lose too much, and you get to look for another job somewhere else next year. Someone please help me out here ..... can parents honestly not be objective enough about their own kid to know whether they can play or not? If they are a skilled player and not getting time on the floor, thats one thing and perhaps there is another underlying problem. But, if they can't play, at least at the varsity level, why can't the parent just accept the cards that have been dealt to them and just let the kid be a part of the program. If the kid wants to quit, then let them quit. If they enjoy being a part of the basketball team, then leave them alone and let them enjoy the experience. I can assure you, there are parents out there who would rather their team lose as long as their kid plays rather than have their team win with their child sittng on the bench. Just my three cents worth :popcorneater:

  5. This is quite the interesting thread and certainly not one that is exclusive to girls basketball ..... it seems to transend all athletic programs from the high school level down. I have noticed the word "mistreat" being used regarding this topic. I would say that the definition of "mistreatment" varies from person to person, parent to parent. I suppose the range of meanings probably go from simply not playing a kid to the other end of the spectrum and crossing the line where there may be some type of physical assault of a player. Now, I think we would all agree that if a coach puts his/her hands on a player in an angry fashion with the intention of physical harm, then that is without question mistreatment and the coach should be dealt with in an appropriate fashion, perhaps even being fired. On the other hand, if the coach simply chooses to not play someone for valid reasons, then that is another story all together. In my opinion, and I know every case is different, not being played is not the same as being mistreated or not being treated fairly. High school athletics is not the same as Jr Pro where everyone pays their money, gets a colored t-shirt, and is guaranteed to play as much as everyone else, regardless of skill level. Parents seem to get the two confused. There are people who want to do away with all tournament teams and mvp's for fear that some other player will get there feelings hurt because they didn't get an award. The last time I checked, this was American, land of the free and home of the brave ...... and, home of those who succeed when they work their tail-ends off. I dare say that in many cases, the kids who are excelling are the ones who are putting in the most time and working the hardest in practice and the offseason. (again, I realize there are exceptions in all cases) Playing any sport at the high school level is a privilege, not a right! If someone is not getting playing time or receiving some kind of award, it may very well be because someone else is working harder than them, not because a coach has it out for them or their parents. As someone said earlier, any coach worth their salt is gonna play the best players they have, period.

  6. Just wondering how the little snow lay off will affect this game Tuesday between these two undefeated teams in district play. Im sure both squads have gotten in some practices while out of school. Looks like the edge might go to Lewis County as they are coming off a great win against a good Wayne County team. Hickman County's last game was a close loss at home to Perry County. According to the boxscore, it looks like Hickman did not play very well against the Lady Vikings with a major let down in the second quarter where they were outscored by 13 points or so. That being said, I suppose if the Lady Dawgs were able to keep it close in the end in spite of playing poorly, they certainly don't need to be counted out of this matchup. Hope the snow melts and this district contest goes on as scheduled.

  7. I come from a very small town and am a huge high school girls basketball fan. I would like to hear from others how some of the smaller communities around are able to build winning programs ..... and I know there are many of them. I realize that there must be a decent coach in place and decent talent, but I am satisfied that it goes far deeper than that. Is the success tied to great teaching and guidance at the lower levels during a players formative years in Jr Pro and middle school? Is it being involved in summer AAU programs? I'm sure its a combo of all of those things. I know that most smaller towns don't have many people moving into them so a coach simply has to play with homegrown talent and use the hand dealt to them most of the time, but yet, it seems many are able to win that way. I personally think its great when a small community can win with the kids who call that place home as opposed to teams who are able to somehow "encourage" talent to move into their city limits. Just trying to figure out the secret formula  Thanks

  8. I usually get to see LCHS play a few times by now, but because of work I have been MIA. I hear that Coach Helton really has a good team this year and has become the front runner in 12 AA with the decline of Marshall County. Can someone tell me if they are as good as folks are saying? Are they good enough to even begin discussions of a trip to Murfreesboro? Thanks. Hoping to see a game soon. Please tell my boss to let me off early just one night!

  9. I'm sure that Coach West has given a valid reason for his departure regarding his other job outside of basketball. However, unless he is taking on more responsibilty or a heavier work load, why has he resigned all of a sudden right here before the meat of the season even begins? Did something that major come up that just couldn't be dealt with while continuing to coach since he has obviously been able to do it for several years now? Its not like this is the first year he has had two gigs going on at the same time. The timing to me just seems kind of odd. I have no doubt that juggling two jobs can be a difficult one especially when you are in charge of a basketball program that has been so successful in the past and the expectations from the community are so high. Nonetheless, I bet if the team were 10-0 right now there would be a good chance he would still be at the helm and just might figure out a way to handle both jobs. The Tigerettes have now come back to the pack as a mortal team and surely Coach West knew that was coming. Losing Lauren March and other talented girls would put a dent into anyones program. The Tigerettes will still be a very competitive team this year as is evident by them beating a good Columbia Central team just a few weeks ago. Winning AND losing is just a natural part of athletics and no doubt Marshall County will have some of both. Sometimes, when you have won more than you have lost you get a little spoiled and expectations become a little unrealistic. Unlike college athletics where you can recruit, in high school you more or less have to play with the hand of kids who have been dealt to you. (although I am not naive enough to think that recruiting does not go on at the high school level either) I sure wish Boyd would reconsider returning to the team because I think he is a good coach ..... but, it may be too late anyway. A good new coach is in place and the team I suppose is moving on. I just wished Coach West would not have taken his ball and done the same.

  10. What's going on in Marshall County? Heard that Coach West resigned on Wednesday. I know they have already lost a couple of district games this year and the talent is down a bit from years past. Obviously losing Lauren March didn't help, but is the future of the program that bleak? Maybe someone can fill me in. Thanks.

  11. wow love to bash teams but when it comes to bashing a player and saying your going to knock him out of the game ,even I have standards, but from what I remember 22 from east is all they had so knocking him out would be smart , but he played nonstop start to finish against a way more powerful team than yours. so my perdiction is east 27 hickman 6 .

"perdiction" ? are you serious? both with the spelling and the score?

  12. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> You have people!!! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Your hilarious...are any of these "people" administrators or coaches?? Was I suppose to know you are not a coach or administrator?? Since you are not, surely some of your "people" knows someone who can turn them in. "If you could you would"....well bring your evidence to the "people" who can do something about it. If not quit your whining....This happens in all sports all the time and if the move is legal then go for it. Tell your kid or your team to get better and work harder. If folks would take care of their own back yard, they wouldn't have to worry about every one else's.....thats all you can control anyway.

You still have not answered any questions...Who is your team? What does any of this matter to you even if it is just BASKETBALL? /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

working harder will still get most average athletes only so far ..... if hard work and heart was all it took to get a gold ball, then there would be a bunch more contenders than what there are ..... there are a BUNCH of hard working teams right here in Middle Tennessee ..... many of these girls are off about a week after their last tourney game and then they are back in the gym preparing for the summer AAU/team games/camps ..... the absolute fact is this, regardless of the sport, if you don't have the horses, in all likelyhood, you will be going home early ..... and this we all know, the best horses tend to migrate to the greenest pastures ......
