  1. Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic Returns December 26-30. 2023

The Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic will celebrate its 34th event this year from December 26-30, 2023, at Hal Henard Gymnasium in Greeneville, Tennessee. The Town of Greeneville and the Greeneville Parks & Recreation Department took over the reins of the event in 2019 with support from the Greene County Partnership and other local agencies. The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Greeneville City School System and many local businesses will be helping at the 2023 event.

This year’s tournament will consist of 20 teams, with games over 5 days. The Ladies Classic traditionally brings together some of the top girls' basketball teams in Tennessee as well as neighboring states to battle for the coveted crown. All five of the local teams --Greeneville, South Greene, West Greene, Chuckey-Doak and North Greene -- will participate, while other squads considered as "regional" teams will be Daniel Boone, Elizabethton, Cocke County, Knox Catholic, Knox Bearden, Morristown West, Oak Ridge, and Knox Webb. Out of town teams include Jackson Southside, Bartlett and Upperman from Tennessee, Marist School of Georgia, The Steward School of Virginia and two teams from Kentucky -George Rogers Clark and Mercy Academy. "We feel we have put together a group of high-quality teams that will provide plenty of excitement and entertainment for our local basketball fans,” stated Butch Patterson, the 2023 Tournament Director and director for the Greeneville Parks & Recreation. “We could not do this event without the support from the Town of Greeneville, the Greene County Commission and the local school systems,” he added.

Gary Compton of Andrew Johnson Bank and a Co-Chairman for the event stated that, “We are proud to be involved with the event again this year, and it has been a community effort for many years to get us to the point of being one of the most recognized women’s high school tournaments in the South. A special thanks to The Greeneville Sun, Radio Greeneville and the Greene County Partnership and the hundreds of volunteers for all they have done over the years to make this an annual the success it has become today.”

For more information on the Ladies Classic and for this year’s tournament go to www.ajblc.com. Ticket information will be announced soon. For sponsorship, ticket or additional information contact Patterson or Tim Bowman at 423-638-3144 or Compton at 423-783-1400.

  2. If you want to play in a loaded Christmas Tournament you need to come play at the Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic in Greeneville. It is always loaded and you have to win four games in a row just like a state tournament type field.

It's very hard for any school to win back-to-back state championships (in basketball), especially at the top level. Hasn't been done very many times. The "Indians" have had some key injuries this season that have held up their progress. But I like the direction this coach is taking the program. DB will have to pick up the pace to make it through the Knoxville area teams and get back to state. Seems there are 3 or 4 teams down there that are really good.

Roll about 35 miles west of Kingsport and that little town called Greeneville did it the last two years.

  4. You make some very good points that makes sense as well. I however honestly don't think that their are the athletes at DB that once was. You have had very few D1 players in football and basketball the last 10 years. Then even some of those transferred out which never used to happen to DB. As for Greeneville they are dominating in multiple sports and one of the main reasons is they are now playing where they belong. Look at the 80's and 90's at the D1 athletes they had and they didn't win the state. Same for Betsy they are no longer playing the same schools they once did. The sport in Kingsport that's put out the most D1 players in last 10 years is baseball and they haven't won a title yet. Look at the Feeder programs and other youth options in Maryville, Greeneville, Elizabethton and right now they are just better. Greeneville and Betsy also hasn't lost kids to other schools they still receive plenty of help transferring in like DB used to get. Greeneville is isolated and its 35 miles to the closest school that would be worth going to. Van Huss, Ted Wilson and Mike Ritz all won state championships at other schools. Two of them came from County schools with Wilson coming from Maryville. They never won it at DB. The talent level just isn't their. Their isn't a Bruce Transbarger, Skip Brown up their anymore and they haven't had one close to them since. They have had some good football players their lord you had 3 NFL players which is awesome but still not enough Jimmy and Joe's to go along with it. In baseball they always have a D1 player but can't get over the hump. Girls basketball Whitson was fantastic but not another D1 in how long? The bottom line is development and I think you can agree on that. That however can't start at the HS it must start much earlier and anybody in Kingsport needs to take a step back nd look at that. A couple of years in a row the only football game your feeder schools won was when they played each other. You are an awesome poster on coach t and are extremely knowledgeable that why I enjoy your posts.

Yeah, That was my attempt to be sarcastic. I've said several times in different post on here that Poore is a slightly above average coach. The most impressive thing he has done is take Jefferson Co. to the state tournament one year. I can't even remember if he won a game there. I'm not saying he's a bad coach but he's not the guy that will win you a state championship or even get close. Cutlip (another average coach) changed his approach last night and Poore didn't have a clue. As for how he was hired in the first place and the national search thing, that was all BS. They had their man before they started the fake search. DB is number two or three in the nation in all time wins and with a top notch facility. You can't tell me there wasn't a boat load of "very good" coaches that would of jumped at the chance. They pulled the same stunt in football. Did a "national search" and ended up with a guy that was already on the staff with no head coaching experience. Passed on a head coach 30 miles away that has since won two state championships and one runner up.

When is the last Time DB won a state Championship in basketball. By this logic DB hasn't had a decent basketball coach in 50 years including Van Huss. Buck never won a state championship at DB and he had way more talent than anybody besides Shipley or anybody else has ever had their. You go at the football coach all the time as well. Same thing their then every coach has stunk it up at DB. The real issue here and nobody wants to admit it is that Kingsport doesn't have all the best athletes like it did 40 years ago and now instead of getting all the transfers they actually lose them. Your feeder schools don't dominate anybody and your Rec programs are weak. You have all this travel ball in various sports that is accomplishing nothing because very few of the coaches know the game. As for the facilities I agree 100% that nobody has anywhere near the facilities that DB has they are amazing. If facilities win you championships then UT should be dominating and the Cowboys should be in the Super Bowl all the time. So its time to either except reality that its not always the coaches fault that you have other deciding factors in your success or fix those issues.

I just watched it too, I'd imagine OR should want the same refs.  Without the 2 sketchy PI's and the insane fumble call, yall didn't have a chance.  TBF it looked to me like they missed the punt muff, but that was tough call.

Punt call was correct. It hit the OR player right in the back. Their is no halo rule in HS Football like college not to mention you cant call interference on two players from the same team.

  11. This tournament will be loaded for he most part. There are numerous state tournament teams, two state champions, seven players in top 200 of their respective class, numerous girls being recruited heavily and 15 teams of the 18 that won 18 games or more last year. It will be a totally new format and will be a five day event instead of four.
