  1. If it gets players more recognition what's wrong with that. If coaches are coaching just to inflate their egos they shouldn't be coaching.

It's $40 for a year, the kids get All-Academic Awards if they are juniors and seniors and Carr a 3.5 or above GPA. There are camps and tournaments set up for the players, an All-Star game for the seniors and yeah a chance to be named All-State. And if they are making money, who cares, it only cost you 40 bucks. The girls are the ones who benefit.

But most coaches, don't want to put the little bit of extra time to help their players get noticed. College coaches don't have the time to see everyone especially when they don't play in tournaments and even then schools like here in Upper East Tennessee don't usually travel much past Knoxville. The old cliché if you're good enough they will find you, may be true for your superstar athletes but their are plenty more with the ability to play at the next level but never get seen.

Anyway to supplement a player's chances to continue doing what they love is Not just a money racket. I have a player profile I email to schools my better players want to go to if anyone wants a copy shoot me an email.

    Just my two cents....

  2. I have resigned my position as head coach at Happy Valley High to help my wife with our autistic 11 year old daughter. It is time to give her the daddy-time she needs.

I wanted to write this to let anyone who may be interested know that I am leaving a team who is on the verge of State contention. A team who finished 27-15 and lost a 2-1 regional game with State Champion Greeneville.

    I graduated 2 seniors SS Krisley Roberts and CF (LMU signee) Kaylee Street. I return All-State players, P Kalee Johnson (17 wins and 203 K) & C Beth Reece (.557 9 2B, 5 3B, 9 HR and 59 RBI) along with All-District players P/1B Kenzie Davis (.475 and 39 RBI), & LF Sydney Puckett (.453)

In addition, Unicoi County lost 8 seniors and Greeneville lost Fortescue. So as you can see a great group of girls are in need of a coach.

Contact Bernie Young at Happy Valley High School if interested.

  3. Lost in a world of Baseball, Childcare & Domestic Chores, I have returned for one final poll.

    1. Hampton - Congrats on the last to first place finish. Good Luck in the State!!

    2. Unaka - Another bottom to top finisher. Sub-state losers. Played their best game. Congrats to MJ for finally playing like she was capable.

    3. Cloudland - Didn't quite meet expectations a great season none the less. Ranked ahead of Betsy for losing to a State participant.

    4. Elizabethton - Great season dampened by not making the Sub-State. Don't know if they could have handled A-E's pressure anyway.

    5. Happy Valley - Met expectations by reaching the Regionals. Not bad considering up & down guard play.

  4. First of all OSU, I'm speechless! I can't believe that you just said that when so many kids read this. I'm sure there are teams with a record of 0-10 that work just as hard as a team that's 10-0, maybe just not the same talent. Look at all the time these kids put in - every one should be rewarded in some way or another. Trophies are not as important as a good pat on the back sometimes. You're right - what are we teaching them? That if you're not a superstar, you're no good? And yes, average is okay in a lot of situations. If average is the best a kid can do then that's wonderful for that particular child. Every child may not be superior in sports but you know, as much as I love sports, sports is not everything. If I'm guessing right, most of us that post were never stars in sports in school. Most of the things I treasure most from being a child are trophies I got. No, I wasn't the best but I gave it 110%. Anyway, I think you need to rethink your post. Sounds like you've been hanging around Coach H17 too long.

When I coached basketball, I never gave trophies to the "superstars". None of my trophies were scoring based.

Most Charges, Best Defense, Best FT %, Most Rebounds, Most Steals, Most Improved and for example the Lady Ranger Award, that goes to the a person, who is a leader, hustler, team player, etc... None like Best Offense, Best 3-point shooter, etc..

ALL trophies should be earned at all levels!

  5. Osu, I,m going to have to agree with Krich (again), These games do matter, If not then why do they keep records, why not just scrimmage 20 games and start the tournaments. Sure the tournaments are a new season and the teams are back to even, but does that mean we forget about what has happened? Let me ask you this, from what I read you used to be a coach, did you ever win the conference or league? If so, did you make a banner that said conference champions, a tee shirt maybe or something that recognized this accomplishment? Well I've seen many conference championship banners so they at least much mean something.

I also believe I would rather be 30 - 0 going into the tournament full of confidence than 0 - 30 without any.

(between you and me osu, I do understand what you are saying, just not to the point that you have drawn it to)

I know you get the point. Check Sports Edit Post for Soap box preaching from Rev. Brutus.

  6. Well, according to the scoreboard my beloved Ladies of the Creek went to Cosby and got a whoopin.' Not the first time that's happened; always a tough place to play. Can't wait to see the scoresheet. Or not. Hang in there, Lady Rangers.

One of those "non-counters," though I don't think there is such a thing; but certainly not a good loss in any respect.

So, what about Unicoi County at Johnson County; Elizabethton at Chuckey Doak; Cloudland at University School; and Sullivan North at Happy Valley?

Just come on and ride with me to the Tournaments! I'll have the Classic Rock of the 70's and 80's in the CD player!

Sounds like another down in the up and down Lady Ranger season. Good thing it gets erased when the tourney starts.

And on the note that games before the tournament don't count, I'd be willing to bet most teams finishing at the bottom of their conference will still reward their players with trophies. In today's sports world, kids go 0-10 in say football all will get a trophy. What happened to earning the hardware? Can't stand seeing kids rewarded for being average or below average. What are we teaching them?? That average is OK. Try telling that to an employer.(Off of my soap box now)
