1. LC eliminates Bearden and Farragut in the district tournament? Say, you think there's a change in the balance of power in 4AAA? LC needs to change their nickname from "Panthers" to "Dragonslayers." Or, maybe, to "Favoriteslayers."

  2. QUOTE(ihavenofriendzz @ May 6 2007 - 10:05 PM) 826453204When are the next games played?

Does What do the next games look like? SD/WB.. then what? Farragut/Heritage and Maryville/LC? or Farragut/Maryville and LC/Heritage? or Farragut/LC and Maryville Heritage?

According to the paper, Farragut plays LC at South Doyle this evening at 5:30.

  3. QUOTE(sportsrmylife @ May 5 2007 - 09:00 PM) 826452660I have been around a while in the knoxville area, moved away and came back and nothing really has changed since i went to school here. It has grown though, and lots of cars on the roadways, but it surprises me that blount county schools arent doing better than they are in the major sports. Is it because they dont have the money to pay good coaches? From what i can gather the coaching staff on the football team has improved tremendously. But what about baseball? There has been some pretty good talent go thru wb in the past 4-5 years, but they never get past the district tournament. I have a son that will be attending wb in the next few years or so and he and i love sports in general, but mostly baseball. I go to a lot of the games, but dont see the coaching it needs to get better and win the big games. Does anyone have any insight that i just might be missing? Or does there need to be a change in the county school system that alocate more money for coaches? Good coaches. someone please enlighten me...

I'm ignorant about Blount County. Are Maryville and Alcoa separate school districts from Blount County?

  4. QUOTE(nowthatsfunny @ May 5 2007 - 08:59 PM) 826452659IF IF IF IF IF

As the saying goes, "If 'if's' and 'but's' were fruits and nuts, we'd all be happy at Christmas." Of course, that aphorism dates back to the days when getting an orange or some walnuts for Christmas was pretty cool, steam engines were high-tech, and D-B was competitive.

  5. I'm sure that LC is ready to kick some butt in the tournament; they've played a tough schedule that will prepare them for it. The recently took two from York Institute and they aren't any better than South-Doyle.

According to CoachT, LC's schedule is ranked 99th out of 106 AAA teams; and that's with LC playing in the toughest district in the state. One wonders who LC would have to schedule to rank lower.

Coach Vulture's win total looks good, though, no matter what the kids do in the district and that's what's important, right?

  6. You sure those quotes aren't by Delmonico over at UT LC?

I'm sure the dimwit who said all those things believes he could coach UT better than Delmonico. I'm also sure the dimwit who said all those things believes he's a good coach because he consistently whipped himself at Strat-O-Matic when he was 15.

a dog runs on the field and a players yells "hey # get your mom off the field" thats the worst one i ever heard.

That's not really so bad; I've seen some of those Moms.

  7. QUOTE(scorecard10 @ May 4 2007 - 08:59 PM) 826452133Here is a little inside info for ALL the Knoxville teams. The Senior bunch from DB has played in Knoxville Tournaments since they were "little squirts" and have come home with 1st Place trophy's! They played against ALL-STAR teams from Knoxville. Against some of the players from Halls, Karns, South Doyle, Farragut, Bearden, Maryville, etc. The players on the ALL-STAR teams are all separated now BUT the BOYS from DB are TOGETHER and are having a fantastic year! Knoxville beware, the boys from the "other" K-Town is rolling like a steam-engine and clicking on all clinders now. Good Luck to All in the Playoffs!

GOING WITH THE VIBES! ROLLING WITH THE TRIBE!

As they lost last year to the--what was it, third- or fourth-place team in district 4--I forget--I think they still have something to prove. I take that back; no, I think they have a lot to prove. Good luck to the little squirts, though.

Steam engines are obsolete and I have no idea what "clinders" are.

  8. QUOTE(Stonewall @ May 2 2007 - 09:46 PM) 826450546We don't race to the computer to woof about Halls, Farragut, or S-D losing.

Region 2 folks don't race to the computer to woof about D-B losing, either. It is, after all, only region 1. No point wasting a woof on the minor leagues.

  9. QUOTE(Rabble Rouser @ Apr 25 2007 - 06:21 AM) 826444789I spoke with a MLB scout this week. He notices stats in the paper and if his curiousity is piqued, he'll go look. In this case, he could tell immediately the stats were inflated, as he had suspected.

There are some high school coaches who schedule patsies so that their win-loss record looks good (I know a 3-A team that has only won 2 district games in 2 years and that only schedules weak A and AA teams for their nonconference schedule--the coach likes to brag about winning 25 games per year); scouts know that and, actually, kids on those teams are penalized because the scouts know it and discount those kids' stats.

Scouts know all about weak coaches and weak schedules. They look at kids playing in strong programs against strong competition; and they look at the kids' talent, not the stats. Stats are too easy for coaches to manipulate by playing lame schedules.

  10. QUOTE(Stonewall @ May 2 2007 - 09:46 PM) 826450546Spoken like someone who doesn't live up here. We don't race to the computer to woof about Halls, Farragut, or S-D losing. There's no rivalry historically to speak of. If it's possible, pull up some D-B football threads from the 1st week of November and you'll know what I'm talking about. The Science Hill crowd, the South crowd, they wear us out if they ever win and we don't. My whole point is that now that we've swept East Tennessee and the 3 major sports those folks have been crickets for 3 weeks. So have our fans. I think it just illustrates that baseball has a groupie following in East Tennessee. If this were football or basketball and we were #2 in the State our fans would be flooding this board. Rivals would be flooding it to rag us, tell us that we recruit, that we're overrated, and that we never win the State. If it's applicable to where you live, imagine the jawing that goes on between Oak Ridge and Farrgut, Soddy and Ooltewah, Maryville and Central, etc.

"Swept East Tennessee"? I think that "East Tennessee" starts approximately at Chattanooga. D-B may have swept the three northeasternmost counties in Tennessee, but that doesn't mean that D-B has "swept East Tennessee." I thought Knoxville was in East Tennessee. I thought Chattanooga was in East Tennessee. Perhaps we have different ideas about geography, about what a broom is, and about what a sweeping is.

I'm not certain how football threads affect baseball. I thought they were different sports. I know they both have helmets, but in my part of East Tennessee, they use different rules and are played at different times of the year. Perhaps that's not so in Kingsport.

Perhaps some folks have been all about cricket, but I thought this was a baseball thread. I don't think many high schools around Knoxville have cricket teams.

Naturally, you "don't race to the computer to woof about Halls, Farragut, or S-D losing." You haven't, after all, seen them lose when they play D-B.

  11. QUOTE(Stonewall @ May 2 2007 - 09:16 PM) 826450511I don't have a problem with you bragging about Knoxville teams beating us recently

    It's not bragging. It's a fact. It's history.

"Bragging" is describing D-B's record in the "Big" 9.

  12. Anyone who plays for Larry Works at Roane State gets a very special kind of education, in baseball and in life--not to mention expectorational accuracy and adult vocabulary.

True story: pitcher gives up a home run in a critical situation on an 0-2 count because he grooved a pitch. Coach Works strides slowly to the mound, looks left, looks right, takes the ball, expectorates, pats the ball into his hand a time or two, signals for a reliever, and says, "So-and-so, you must be the dumbest mother------ in the whole ----ing world." At which point the whole infield--gathered around the mound-- puts their gloves over their faces to hide that they are laughing.

Kidding aside, TN JUCO had one team rated #1 for some time and *another* team in TN JUCO won the national championship? What's that say about the quality of competition?

  13. Recent baseball history is that no matter what D-B's record is, when they hit Region 2 (Knoxville-area) teams in tournament play, the Tribe retreats back to the wigwam to get ready for next year. No matter how much anyone peeps about them.

Perhaps the "Big 9" is more "9" than it is "Big." Perhaps a good record in the "Big" 9 isn't peep-worthy.

  14. Watch out for Lenoir City in the district tournament. They are preparing by playing powerhouses Kingston (2A, 7-11), York Institute (2A, 10-11) and Clinton (3A, 9-17) this week. That scheduling should prepare them to go into the tournament on a roll. And they just won their first-ever district game over Heritage, which should be a real confidence-builder.

  15. QUOTE(ksgovols @ Apr 23 2007 - 09:31 PM) 826443873One of the Mom's that used to keep score for summer games told me she'd put EC on the book when the coach left a pitcher in too long or didn't move the runner to second prior to a double play. EC= Error on Coach. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

My personal experience is that "EC" would appear in the scorebook--especially if one expanded that definition to include bad decisions about the lineup or pitch selection--a lot more than "BC" (bad call).

Or, in other words, there are coaches who are not nearly as good as the umpires they complain about.

  16. QUOTE(Shaman @ Apr 14 2007 - 09:50 PM) 826437685Don't forget Lenoir City. They started 0-7 in the district but Coach Buzz will turn that around. Look for them to go deep into the playoffs under his guidance.

    Oh, yeah, LOL, dream on.

  17. All from the same coach:

On a road trip: "You don't need maps; if you get lost, just follow me."

To a future all-stater: "You don't have what it takes to be a good high-school player."

About his shortstop: "He's too slow to play anywhere else, so he's gotta play shortstop."

About his hitting philosophy: "Hit ground balls and they won't get us out--choke and poke." About his pitching philosophy: "Make them hit ground balls and we'll get them out--make them choke and poke."

About motivation: "If we lose it's all your fault and I'll put your gear in the parking lot."

About job security: "My Dad is big in local politics."

About winning and losing: "We won 28 games agains weenies so our 0-16 conference record doesn't represent what a good job I did."

  18. Yeah......Probably not everyone, but we are for 95%. Who would that red letter team be for South Doyle there jackit ?

In baseball, year-in and year-out, for S-D I'd bet it's going to be Farragut and Bearden way ahead of D-B. Waaaaayyy ahead.

Given what Farragut's done over the last few years, you'd think they'd be a "red-letter" day for S-D; and if they're a red-letter day, D-B must be something like a green-letter day. Let's imagine: who's the red-letter day on your schedule, the 3-time state champion (and former national champion) who's in your district, or a team in a different region from 120 miles away? Yeah, you bet, I'd sure focus on the team from a different region 120 miles away. I might even play my frosh against that red-letter team that's in my district in order to prepare for D-B.

    Yeah, right.

Perhaps D-B is the red-letter team for 95% of some teams, somewhere, but I don't think that, as good as they are, they rate that high in the Knox County area. I'd place them something like sixth on the red-letter chart, behind Farragut, S-D, Halls, Bearden, Gibbs, and Loudon. And I'm probably leaving somebody out. Seriously, when it came to tournament time, D-B couldn't beat the team that finished fourth in the regular season in D4AAA, right?

  19. Oh, yeah.... You're right, you did kick my butt!! Many, many times as I recall. Of course, that was back in the 1800s. :>)

Yeah, Davy Crockett was our small forward. :)

While you were always a competitor you were a gentleman about it, and I appreciated that. I don't mind an elbow to the ribs among friends.

  20. LCborn,

Thanks for being so tactful about the LC situation. The truth is America, Buzz got his job because his dad does the radio broadcasts for LC sports, not because he had any coaching credentials or experience coming into the job. The school board decided they needed to reward his dad's service by sneaking Buzz in the first two years cloaked as a volunteer assistant while he was getting his teaching certificate.

The head coach those two years, by the way, is the girl's basketball coach and Buzzmeister's father-in-law. He took the job to hold it for Buzz until he was qualified to get a teaching job, no other reason.

Neither are qualified to be high school baseball coaches, but they did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

"I am shocked, simply shocked to learn that there is gambling going on at this establishment."

"Here are your winnings, mon Capitain"

There is no Holiday Inn Express in Lenoir City.

  21. It's interesting that this year's state champs in AAA were fourth--fourth--in their district during the regular season.

To me, that emphasizes how teams can mature and improve, and how the tournament should be about who's the best team at tournament time instead of who's the best through the regular season.
