Agreed, SD rebuilding with a new coach, new to the high school scene. They are young!

SD may be rebuilding player-wise, but the new HC isn't "new to the high school scene." He was OC at Bearden High for several years prior to a stint in college football.

Especially linemen.  Just an anecdote:  when my son was a senior, his squat (425 at 167 bw) was the 2nd heaviest lift on the team.  There is definitely room for improvement in the SC area.

    Dang...that's impressive.

I tried to squat 250 at the gym the other night (with a 250 bw) and nearly shat myself. Then had to walk out of the gym hunched over like a coal-miner.

Pretty clear that the Jeff Miner hire is a home run compared to Jones. He’s been a high school coach for nearly two decades at one of the premier programs in the state. Jones has been a little league  coach for the bulk of his “career” He’s only coached high school football for four years. Seems to me like HVA was willing to make things happen to get their guy. Bearden was hamstrung into hiring a community coach like it’s inner-city memphis.

    Again, an interesting take.

Let's just hope this HVA hire is better than the last one, as they haven't exactly been setting it on fire the last few years.

I guess that remains to be seen. Time will tell as far as that goes, but I do think Bearden made a good hire. I’ll be surprised if Josh doesn’t pull some really good players to Bearden. Call it what you will, but kids love playing for him, like they do for Lowe @ Powell.

Agree on the remains to be seen part.

Just interesting to me that FHSalum mentions a few times how well the HVA admin handled their opening and then refers to the new BHS hire as a "bookie." Me thinks he dost protest too much.

KCS has approved the hire of a bookie to run one of the largest programs in the area. Wow. I have truly seen it all!

In other words, you're disappointed that the BHS administration made a better hire than HVA. Understandable.

  6. I was very impressed by HVA's team.  It was obvious on the first possession they were ready and BHS were not.  HVA's coaches did a good job of exploiting BHS's at time over-pursuing defense.  Biggest surprise to me was BHS's seeming lack of willingness to go away from running the ball.  Their QB is one of the better I've seen this season and they have the ability to stretch the field.

Anyway...great win for HVA, and good luck to both teams in the playoffs.  I'll go back to eating the rest of my crow now!

I think HVA is similar... when they are hot they are hard to stop, but unfortunately they are not always hot.  Hoping it is a well fought, injury free battle.  And for both Bearden and HVA's sake... I hope it is not impacted by any controversial calls late in the game. :thumb:

Agree...haven't seen HVA play this year, but they are usually a pretty talented bunch.

Just watching from the Farragut broadcast you never see the flag for "language" so it just comes across as 2 refs throwing a flag for the same call and not realizing it so they just give it to him twice. Without ever seeing a 3rd flag for the unsportsmanlike it just seems off. Also, couldn't that have been defensive holding? They're 8yds off the line of scrimmage and he literally throws him to the ground. You can't grab and throw someone without holding them.

edit: after watching again past just the initial flags from a slowed down video I saw, you see another ref hand a flag to the side judge who drops it, which I assume is the flag for him saying whatever he said.

Would agree with this, if it was a passing play.  However, I believe this was a run by Farragut...not sure?  If it was, then that type of physicality occurs on the corners all the time.

That all depends on what the kid said. There are just some things that high school officials won't tolerate at all.

This...I initially thought the Farragut kid said something to the official, but have heard it was something he said to the Bearden player.  Any official hearing what was allegedly said would have thrown a flag.

If that's what happened, the ref(s) got it right. If you mouth off to the ref, that's an automatic flag, on top of whatever infraction you're already guilty of.

Curious decision by Courtney to go for it on 4th and 30+. Not a lot of plays that will get you that yardage. I realize that Wilkins was having his way with the Farragut defense, but I think you pin them deep in that situation (~3 min left and TOs in your pocket) and hope that your defense can hold.

Was surprised by that as well.  Punting may not have been a popular decision with the fanbase, especially if you don't get the ball back.  But I'd take my chances and pin them deep, especially with a couple TO's remaining.

  11. I was at the game and saw the play.  It looked as if #10 was attempting to block the BHS cornerback, but got taken to the ground during the process.  The whistle blew and #10 gets up and then smacks the BHS cornerback across the helmet, while the ref is standing right on top of the play.  Obviously I couldn't hear the interaction between him and the ref, but it did appear he said something to him after the first flag was thrown.

Either way...it was an unfortunate ending to a well-played game.

  12. Great game by both teams.  Caleb Wilkins for BHS was running like a freight train, and the Carter kid from FHS was as well in the second half.

Very unfortunate personal foul and unsportsmanlike penalty on FHS when they had it 3rd and 2 inside the BHS 10-yard line with less than 5 minutes to go in the game was the difference.

Great win by BHS.  Win out and they can win the region.

  13. Good high school football game.  SH jumped out to a 28-7 lead mid-way through 3rd, but BHS rallied to make it a game.  BHS lost 3 starters to injuries during the game, but still managed to make a game of it.  They had the ball with 1 second left in the game on the SH 10 yard line, but couldn't convert on a pass into the end zone to tie it up.

SH is a talented team and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the playoffs this year.  Good luck to both teams for the remainder of the season!

Well, if he felt like he was wrongly accused of something that could tarnish his character then I don't blame him a bit for standing up for himself. Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself in life.

Agree...but is stating your won-loss record and going into details about drafting you son as a coach while you're away really "standing up for yourself?"

Here we are folks, at the midway point of the regular season and it is gameday. Won't be able to make it to this contest but once again I like the Dogs in this one and let me be the first one to tell you it won't be close because that Bearden team is scary. They naysayers every week they are fighting to prove wrong. I've got the dogs in this one 31 - 0. That offense is firing on all cylinders pounding the rock and that defense is a goldarn public health concern. I feel a great swell of pity for the poor souls who stand in their way on a Friday night. God, I love this time of year. I'll hang up and listen.

I'll have whatever he's drinking bartender...

I believe the toppers will top the pound puppies. South Doyle is a lot worse than people thought they were. Bearden hasn't faced a physical defense yet. I am assuming you are kidding about the 6 game winning streak/conf championship!?!?

While I agree that SH will be a better quality opponent than BHS has faced thus far, I would argue that both Cleveland and SD had pretty physical defenses.

Well I we all know what the referee quoated after the referee suspended the player for a cheap shot on a star AC player. The ref told the Clinton coach and Clinton coach kept on reacting well that is what he gets; he should not have kept his staters in. That was a massive cheap shot and based upon what the Clinton coach told the referee one is inclined to think he may have instigated the cheap shot. I am not justifying either coach or assistant coach for both sides. But the player for AC layed in the ground for quite a while, injured. If you a coach and that does not make your blood boil then you may not be much of a coach. So I do believe the coach for Clinton was taunting on top of the cheap shot, well that is really hard to hold back. These coachs for AC teach them to be class and they are very classy. Clinton has a history of taunting. So while it is not right either way, I can see what was going on.

the player "...layed in the ground for quite a while.."??  Geeze...this was a worse brawl than i thought.  So, he finally came back to life and got out of the ground??
