  1. From Coach Ruschell:

"Join us on May 5th for a pre-practice celebration at Maclellan Gym parking lot; 600 Douglas Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403. [Tickets: $10]

    Practice is 4 - 6 PM.

All proceeds will go to the RTC South, allowing athletes to come and train with the best - we are excited to make a difference in the southern wrestling community.

For more information on the RTC South please visit our website at: https://rtcsouthwrestling.com

Please let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see many of you there!"

  2. Unless the NCAA's institute's third-party review officials we're always going to wonder about unconscious-bias. There will still be complaints but the process would be perceived as more transparent.

Congrats for the Tn teams For their placers. However Prep Slam is def not the same as when it first started when 1 memphis team was the first team to start going then few other Tn D2 team still started and at one point seemed like mostly all D2 schools were going. But not even other top teams across the country no longer attend this tourney. Not sure who or how it could be a top 10 tourney now.

In any given year the Prep Slam could be considered "top shelf" or not. Much depends on what prep wrestling programs have on their plate and what head coaches feel is needed, schedule-wise, to meet the readiness of their wrestlers. Then, one needs to factor in what arcane policies athletic administrations impose on their *own* sports programs, which prevent some schools from participating.

As for Tennessee D2 schools, the Prep Slam is geographically appealing - except for the Memphis prep schools. Unfortunately, given that D2 schools now see one another 4 weeks in a row, including sectional duals, head coaches prefer to schedule other competition during the season.

In our sport, focusing on specific teams is like being unable to see the forest for the trees. It's only relative to a certain degree. This year's Prep Slam had a plethora of nationally recognized individuals.

With exams just beginning my gut tells me that the young Father Ryan wrestlers will be much more focused on academics than wrestling and the end result is they will get clipped.

Do you actually know any wrestlers? ;)

Just poking fun. Always enjoy your input here on CoachT.

  14. Congrats, Jake !!

    From McCallie AD, Jeff Romero:

    Quote

"After serving 10 years as head wrestling coach here at McCallie, Mike Newman has decided to lighten his load and step down as the head coach. He will remain with the wrestling program as a varsity assistant coach as well as continuing his roles as varsity assistant football coach, teacher of Wellness in the Upper School, and Assistant Athletics Director for Player and Coach Development.

Jake Yost will be the new head wrestling coach and lead the program. Jake joined the McCallie family in 2016 to run MTA in the Middle School and to serve as one of Mike’s assistant wrestling coaches. He worked as head coach at Cleveland High School from 2012 to 2016.

We are certainly grateful to Mike for the outstanding job he did in overseeing the wrestling program. He did so with class, compassion, integrity, and unselfishness. We are fortunate to have Jake on staff to step into this role as Jake possesses the same coaching and character qualities as Mike. Go Blue!"

    Grapple on!

  16. [FWIW] DII wrestling coaches maintain on-going dialogue for ways to improve post-season championships, particularly the traditional state championship. That said, the TSSAA's position is to treat all divisions identical. So, DII began using a qualifying tournament about 5 years ago.

To what degree the philosophy of "participation trophies" entered into their decision-making process is unknown, but I'd wager it was absolutely zero. If anything, the qualifying tournament has increased the value and accomplishment of competing in the traditional state championship. Before, everyone automatically went.

Certainly larger brackets appear more competitive on first glance. From what I can tell, most other traditional state championship tournaments range from 8- to 16-man brackets. Three GHSA divisions are 8-man brackets. The others are 16-man. Tennessee's 3A 32-man bracket is an outlier. Of course, California has a 32-man bracket, but there is only one division in California. As money-hungry the TSSAA is accused of often being, they're not rushing to disrupt the season schedule to require another qualifying tournament for our 3A schools, to have a 16-man state bracket.

Bottomline, Tennessee coaches and wrestlers are doing a fine job competing within the structure set-up and managed by the TSSAA. [/FWIW]
