  1. what teams are in these tournaments already?

    So far:

JV - Independence, Franklin, DCA, Ensworth, Brentwood Academy, Centennial, Brentwood High

Varsity - Franklin, Ensworth, DCA, Memphis Catholic, Bishop Byrn, Brentwood Academy, Portland

  2. Franklin High School is looking for teams for our 2007 JV and Varsity volleyball tournaments.

The JV tournament is Sept 14-15.

The Varsity tournament is Sept 28-29.

Email me if you are interested and I will send you specifics.

  3. MTSU has team camp the 15-17th of this month (I'm bringing my varsity and jv over from Memphis for it). There will be teams from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama there. I agree that team camps are great for helping players make the transition back from club ball. With the right amount of fundraising and parental support, you can pull off multiple camps, especially if you go to local high schools that hold team camps.

On another note, I am looking for a tournament in the Nashville/Murfreesboro area for this season. Any leads?

erose, Franklin High School has multiple openings in both our JV and varsity tournaments. The JV event is Sept 14-15, and the varsity tournament is Sept 28-29. Email me if you are interested and I will send you specifics.

  4. The Impact 14U (now all freshman) was pretty good. Ravenwood's 6'2" middle is Meredith Richardson and Woodland's is Madelyn Hutson. Both will dominate for Ravenwood. Greenbrier's two freshman are Jennifer Holbert and Candy Roberts. Both will be BIG assets to that team. The setter wasn't too shabby either :thumb:

I don't know too many 8th graders who get recognition this early, especially in public forums. But the comments about Madelyn Hutson are right. Barring something unforseen, this player will be mentioned in the same breath as Lauren Brewster, Taylor Parrish, Lauren Greenwood, and the elite of the elite from middle TN very soon. As a 7th grader, she stood 6'1" and touched 9'7" at club tryouts last year. Plus a great attitude, awesome supportive family, and strong desire and work ethic to boot. She's a coach's dream. I can't hardly wait to see her develop.

In the 9th and 10th grades....Nicole Smith also has that rare athleticism that you just don't see everyday. Ellen Mullins is just amazing to watch with her defensive instincts. Alison Woods leads Centennial now as a Soph, Sam Serley and the Perilli's at Independence, Meredith Jones at Lipscomb, Angelle Hayes at Brentwood, Chelsea Ferron at WCentral and on and on...there is a LOT of supporting talent in the FR anda SOPH classes that are making HUGE contributions right now to varsity programs. And it looks like the 7th and 8th graders coming up in the next couple of years are right there with them. It is going to be fun to see how strong middle TN vb gets.

  5. I know that Huntsville defeated Brentwood in Alabama in the finals, but I also know that Manual took them to three in defeat in that tournament. Butler has defeated Manual and lost a deciding game three to Holy Cross 24-26 here. If Huntsville is off a little, Butler just might take them. Sounds like they are young, so I wouldn't be entirely shocked by that.

I'm surprised Brentwood doesn't play in this tournament?

I know they did once or twice a few years ago. They will be at the Southside tournament in Birmingham this weekend, then host the Brentwood Invt next weekend, host a playday the following weekend and then fly to Tampa for the Berkeley Prep Premiere.

  6. Pool Brackets For The Louisville Invitational

Pool 1 Assumption, Harding Acad, Cov. Holy Cross

Pool 2 Sacred Heart,Harpeth Hall Acad., Ryle

Pool 3 St. Ursala Acad., Beechwood, Male

Pool 4 St. Joseph Acad., Boone Co., Campbell Co.

Pool 5 Notre Dame, So. Oldham, Henry Clay

Pool 6 Mercy, Presentation, Newport Central

    Pool 7 Huntsville, Butler, Conner

Pool 8 Lou Holy Cross, St. Henry, Tates Creek

I expect most of the media attention will be on court 1 focusing on Asusmption, but if you get a chance stroll over to pool 7 and take a look at pre-season #33 Huntsville. Then consider that the setter on that team is a Freshman.

  7. Well I can tell you this, most (if not all) of their freshmen played club this past season and there is one who is playing varsity and 6'2". There is another (also 6'2") who will be there next year and is playing middle school at Woodland. I would guess these "twin towers" will dominate the net for them in coming years.

Hey P401K  Looks like I will see you Sat afterall. But don't be a coach potato, come see me Friday too. You know where to find me. 6'2"? Whew!

  8. When will the schedule be out? It must be out to someone for approval. Its not on Brentwood High web site.

I am trying to get the info on the Blastoff. Should have it today or tomorrow I would think. I will post the sched asap on the brentwood website. Here are the teams. It is a virtual who's-who among traditional and new powers with a few exceptions. I think a look at the list of teams will answer a lot about the season after this weekend.

  9. One thing that REALLY surprises me though is that there is no mention of ANY Brentwood girls on this National championship Impact 15-1 team. Three Independence girls definately bodes well for that teams future, but i'm surprised to see no Brentwood girls mentioned in this article. Definately GREAT for Impact as a club, but "perhaps" not so great for Brentwood in the next couple years after the 17-1 girls graduate.

Accurate assessment. No BHS kids on the 151 team. As you know there has been a split in Nashvegas as well on the club scene the last couple of years. More options for the girls, more girls playing. I didn't always see it that way, and I am still a loyal Impact guy and believe in our coaches, but however the girls get better helps the whole area. The Ravenwood school zone has really diminished the number of kids coming into BHS. But I assure you there are still a number of talented players yet to be seen in ROYAL blue.

  10. I've seen a lot or TN volleyball and in my opinion if teams like Independence, Franklin or Centennial were in KY they would rank somewhere in that top 10-25. Brentwood would be between 6-10, but there is no TN team that could currently crack the top 5. That's not a slam. Not many top teams in many states that could.

Well, I guess we will never know and all this is just speculation anyway. But remember, Brentwood's JV went to Louisville and put the smack down on Ryle 25-7, 25-10, and Sacred Heart 25-15, 25-12 in the finals. I don't know how many of those KY kids are playing varsity now, (if any), but those BHS kids are basically the varsity here now along with a great setter and two great OH's. I respect your opinion Digs, I just don't think the gap is that great anymore outside of Assumption.

  11. I'm going to try and make it over for this one. Looks like some great volleyball. What will be the format for the games?

Varsities play for 1 hour, and JV's play for 55 minutes. Typically games are to 25 like normal unless time does not permit. Some varsities will play longer or shorter based on roster sizes and whether or not they have a JV team.

  12. The schedule for the BHS Team Camp is now available at brentwoodvolleyball.com

  13. I'll do my best to report on but with this being during the week and during the day, I may only get to see a few matches. I'll try to get as much info as possible!

Can't be with the team this week. Someone please provide updates. I expect Pelham to be VERY good after beating Grissom last year in Bham with virtually all Sophs and Juniors.

  14. I think you all know who I am. All I can say is I hope the previous poster is not a brentwood player. I hope we have better class than that. Losing was definately a dissapointment. However, I would be the first one to congratulate SS on their win given the chance. They flat out played awesome. No one likes to lose, but we all can appreciate inspired play, and SS surely had that. In retrospect (hindsight being 20/20), there were some things we could have done to help ourselves schematically. But it might not have mattered, SS played phenominally. Their libero was AMAZING. Everything she touched was golden. And every ball we hit seemed to wind up in Whitney's hands without her taking a step. So, I give credit to SS' coach for having a good game plan and to the players for executing it. I am upset and frustrated with the outcome as is everyone as BHS, but I take nothing away from SS. Sure we made some errors, but they earned it, we did not give it to them, which is a little comforting. It is much harder to accept losing to an inferior team. SS was not.

Rest assured however, the Lady Bruins will do everything they can to be back at state next year. With a vengeance.

  15. It would be really big for a Knox team to win a game at the State. Hope you have a good run. I get the feeling that SNRaiderfan has never been to a state tournament...but I could be wrong.

I could be wrong but my best guess is SNRaiderFan is an Anderson County fan, not a Knox Catholic fan.

    SNRaider = Sullivan North Raiders

  16. I called the reporter from the Jackson Sun trying to get contact info for the coach or the school, but no return phone call. If anyone has any phone numbers or even an email address, we would like to send a personal note at least. This is a travesty averted to some degree, but the vb community should embrace these people and let them know we are thinking of them, even in this time of playoffs.

  17. ha ha! Lost me on that too. I can only assume PHargis is referring to the approach and transition footwork that was worked on at the Impact Youth League on Saturday. Hey what can I say, footwork is important! I will say that I am impressed with several of the Siegel middle schoolers. They are talented.

  18. I've been a little dissapointed with the local paper's lack of coverage in our sport (like everyone else). With all the great district action going on, you'd think we'd see some print in the paper. There was one article on Glencliff recently, but not much else in a while from our friends at the Tennessean. So, I nicely :thumb: let them know my thoughts as a subscriber. Being one of the largest papers in the state, they could do better. Here is the response I got:

My name is Alan Whitt and I am the new sports editor at The Tennessean.

I've seen both of your letters and I agree with you 100 percent. The Tennessean has not done a good job covering other sports beyond football.

I want to assure you that will change. One of the reasons I was brought in is to beef up and broaden our prep coverage. Unfortunately, I've been on the job less than two weeks and I'm just geting my feet wet.

However, I've been in ongoing discussions with our editor, E.J. Mitchell, who just like me is committed to coverage of all high school sports and not just a select few. And that is a genuine comittment.

Does that mean we will be writing game stories from all events? Of course not. But there is no reason we shouldn't get all results in the paper. But that will require more cooperation from the schools. They need to call us the night of the event with the proper information. Too often people will call without details, or telling us "so-and-so beat so-and-so." We need the score, team records and a brief highlight from every game.

And results have to be called in the day of the event. There are times when an event is held on a Saturday and we get the call on Tuesday. We are a daily paper and do not report events more than a day after the fact. That is standard operating procedure at 99 percent of the daily newspapers in this country.

These are not excuses for the poor high school coverage of the past. But things will change and I'm sure you will see the difference.

So let's give Mr. Whitt the benefit of the doubt and help him and the writers at the Tennessean provide better coverage for our sport. :D
