  1. I think you may be thinking of Soddy, Bradley and Ooltewah in the same district for the duals. Bradley is in the same individual region as Cleveland. Soddy is in the same individual region as Ooltewah.

Yes, I am. I didn't understand that change anymore than the one being considered now! It just seem like the goal is to keep certain wrestlers home. Everyone wins everyone get a trophy, work for it or not!

  2. I don't understand why someone feels the need to keep changing things. I still don't get the last change, putting Soddy, Cleveland and Bradley in the same region. Let's drive past 6 schools that aren't in our region to wrestle this one that is?

I guess we need to teach our kids that hard work is not the way to win. Let's just change things around so you can win.

  3. http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2012/apr/03/tssaa-to-consider-wrestling-proposal/?sportspreps

It's possible that a split in Division I wrestling, recognizing AAA and A/AA state champions, could become a Tennessee high school reality by the 2013-14 school year.

Mark Reeves, an assistant executive director with the TSSAA, confirmed Monday that a proposal would be presented to the organization's Board of Control at its June meeting and that the state governing body was exploring options to accommodate the change.

"I don't know if it's going to happen, but the vote will take place at the June meeting when the board meets to consider [all] sports classification changes," Reeves said.

The board is expected also to consider whether to keep six public school divisions for the football playoffs or return to five.

If the board accepts the wrestling proposal, which is to be submitted by Martiin Luther King coach Paul Bass, it is likely that the Division I traditional tournament would drop from 32 to 24 qualifiers for Class AAA and that the A/AA tournament would have 12-man brackets. Reeves said the possible changes would not affect Division II, which currently has a nonqualifying 16-man tournament, or the girls' tournament, which still has invitational status.

Numerous Division I coaches were hopeful of keeping the 32-man AAA bracket and adding a 16-man A/AA bracket.

Hixson coach Garrick Hall, whose team would be in the new A/AA tournament, said he did not like the 24/12 option.

"Ultimately you'd like to grow the sport, but this is almost like cutting off a hand," Hall said. "If you to go with 32- and 16-man brackets, it might ultimately grown the sport. I like the way it is to a certain point, but I'd also like to take more kids and have more medals in the state."

If it is a matter of time constraints, Hall said, maybe the state could look at making consolation matches three or four minutes rather than five, going with three one-minute periods or a two-minute period and two one-minute periods.

Hall also is concerned about the current Region 4 tournament, especially if teams are allowed only two qualifiers. The current Region 4 field, excluding AAA schools Soddy-Daisy and Ooltewah, has 12 teams with Central, Hixson and Notre Dame having won seven of the eight A/AA state duals championships.

One major worry in this area is Soddy-Daisy, Cleveland and Bradley Central winding up in the same region. Those teams have won the last 13 traditional championships.

"One of the concerns and certainly one we'd want to listen to if is you have some of the best teams all in the same area. It's a legitimate concern," Reeves said.

One idea the TSSAA is considering is eliminating the eight region tournaments and going with four "super regionals" much like the current track and field format with six medalists advancing from each to the state tournament.

"If the board approves an A/Double-A tournament, we have to figure out which route Triple-A would go," Reeves said. "We're working at looking at hypothetical regions. We have also looked at eight regions and we have even looked at six regions.

"What we don't want to do is add another [qualifying] tournament. We would like to keep the calendar the same whether it's region or sectional tournaments. We might even look at less qualifers from Memphis, which has 12 [AAA wrestling] teams total."

As for the classification debate on football, Reeves said the TSSAA sent out a survey to the 300-plus football-playing schools asking for responses signed by principals. He said only slightly more than half the schools had bothered to respond and that those responses were close to a 50-50 split.

Just refuse to allow Cleveland, Soddy and Bradley to attend the state then all these other kids will get to be state champions!

But what will you do when another area start to win, just do away with wrestling?

  4. Don't be bitter just because something didn't go the way you wanted. The refs did a very good job.

I'm not bitter because things didn't go my way "My team won" I just feel there were several bad calls more than normal and not just our matches but other matches we watched.

  5. Congrats to those bears. Your school has always been the best when it comes to wrestling. It has just seemed to come easy to your guys to be the best. I saw the bears actually feel a little fear earlier in the season and they fought back to win the state championship with ease like they always do. I was hoping for an upset this year, but all I can say is that I understand why that school has reigned in wrestling for some twenty years or so.

Bradley Central High School caught my attention this football season. It was a sport that your school struggled with for a long time. Your boys fought hard this year and made the state give you guys a new respect that was well-earned. There is not one school or fan that can honestly say you guys are not the best in the sport of wrestling though. You obviously have what many schools would love to have-many of the best wrestlers, great coaches, and devoted fans. If any school can defeat you guys are even compete with you guys, they are always proud. Being compared to Bradley in wrestling is an honor. I have watched high school wrestling for about 15 years. I have seen a team or two give Bradley a tough time over the years. But it never lasts. Bradley always comes back on top and they usually claim it for years on end.

And I have known a few Bradley wrestling fans. They are hard core and they are there to support their boys. You will hear them yelling for their guys to comeback when they are down. But in the end, they always seem to appreciate a good match. I have a hard time downing honest and deserving champions like a lot of people want to do. These people really love the sport and the boys who are involved in it. I have seen them clap respectfully many times when an opponent pulls a good upset. I wont lie, I have seen a couple of times when they might question some calls from a ref, but when it comes to the kids- they really seem to get it. Maybe it is easy when you are number one for so long. I don't know, none of us will because we haven't experienced 15 or 20 years of reign like Bradley has.

I wont promise that I wont be in the stands cheering a team on that has a shot at taking Bradley down in the future. But you better bet that I have respect and appreciation for Bradley because they have earned it!

Thank you, that was very nice, glad to see you understand how we feel about our wrestlers, win lose or draw we love then and will stand up to anyone who disrespects them. They work very hard and should not be hated just because they have a bear paw on their back.

  7. Once more it is getting to be negative to be a teacher/coach. More parents are out to nag and bicker about the slightest of things ever so picky. Not focus on the good things that have been done to benefit and encourage those who have needed help and received it from great people like Hamm.

Its a witch hunt to plunder into a persons life away from school. More parents need to be envolved in their kids life after school hours particuliarly at home and weekend when not being supervised by coaches.

They have to blame someone when their kids don't turn out perfect! I am sure that facebook page was the start of someone's perfect child dropping out of school or worse! I tried really hard to think of something worse that might contribute to the childs downfall, but I was unable to.

  9. For those of you wondering about attendance #s, preliminary totals from TSSAA show total paid attendance for both the duals and individual increased by about 200 for each tournament from last year's totals. I haven't gotten a day-by-day breakdown yet, but when I do, I'll let you all know.

Speaking for all the Williamson County people who worked to put the events on, we hope they were enjoyable for all who attended and that everyone was made to feel welcomed and appreciated. As far as issues with the floor setup, lighting, prices, etc. if TSSAA choses to bring both or either tournaments back next year, we'll work to fine-tune where we can or have the ability to. Not sure what can be done about improving the lighting and gate prices are determined by TSSAA Board of Control, but those issues have been noted and discussions will take place to see what, if anything, could be done. I know there are a lot of people in this county that want to work as hard as possible to do what is best for wrestling in Tennessee, and for that, I am truly thankful.

    Coach Blair

There is probably very little that can be done about the lights for most of the tournament. However, you could raise the mats for the finals (NCAA's) and have lights on the mats like they do in boxing.

They charged for 2 year olds. Kinda harsh!
