  1. I was just thinking through the teams that MBA played out of conference and noticed that all but one (Ravenwood) made the playoffs and won their first round games; Hillsboro, Antioch, and Independence. Throw in the scrimmages against Riverdale, Smyrna, and Goodpasture I think, and you have a very impressive list of opponents that prepare you for this point in the season as long as you survive it.

I think it speaks highly of all of the schools that play schedules like this, and the results are proven on the field.

  2. Let's try something new...

How about we (both MBA and Ryan) try something new on this thread; let's show some class that represents the true character of these institutions, the history of the schools, and the history of this rivalry.

This game and these student athletes deserve that.

Both teams have accomplished a lot this year, and those accomplishments should not be cheapened by the mouth of immaturity.

Therefore, respect these schools, these students, and this storied rivalry!

Chapter 76 will play out next Friday on The Hill.

  3. i believe there is a filter that blocks out that preps website that starts with MAX and ends with PREPS every time its brought up on here. that poster really did not put "unapproved website" it was the filter which replaced it because its unapproved to be linked here on coacht i suppose. look 2 lines down for example i will type it in as is in my browser and it will get filtered to say "unappoved website"

    unapproved website.com

Who decides whether a site is approved or unapproved, CoachT?

  4. Let me chime in on this Rivalry talk......I graduated from Ryan in the early seventies and I can only remember one Ryan-MBA game that I have missed in that time...For me and friends in my era, this was the ultimate can`t miss game each year....The `71 game at Vandy with 28,000 was as great an atmosphere as I can remember....There have been thrillers as well as blowouts on both sides in the history of this series.......This is the 75th meeting and although the Irish have not won in the last ten years, us older guys still see this as "the game" each year....I have nothing but respect and admiration for both schools as they admirably fulfill their respective educational missions...Except for a couple of years, these two fine schools have been playing each other since 1926....Most lifelong Nashvillians have probably seen at least one Ryan-MBA game....For me, it is an honor and privliege to witness this gridiron showdown each year....Sure, there are the Brentwood Academy and now Ensworth games that have great meaning for MBA as well as Ryan`s budding rivalry with JPII, but I still say Ryan-MBA is "THE Game"

Here`s to a injury free and great football game on Friday! I`m sure I`ll see some of my old friends from BOTH schools....

    Fantastic Post.

This is The Game. For all of us that played in it, we remember this game.

For those of us that played pre-D-II, lining up against Overton, Antioch, Ryan, Hillwood, Hillsboro, meant playing against all of our buddies from Church and Summer League Baseball. Every snap, we were hitting our friends and enjoying every minute of it. Our children's generation will have the same situation with MBA, Ryan, Ensworth, and Brentwood Academy; hopefully, their experience will be as memorable as ours was.

Should be a great game. Turnovers will decide it; these teams are too close to call.

  5. no excuses but MBA could have blown EHS out of the house if McGugin wanted to deviate from the gameplan which was obviously get a lead, get every second off that clock as possible and hand it over to the states best defense. Also MBA did drop their starting RB, QB, and LT in that game so I dont think you can say all that much.

For the game tonight, I enjoyed it because I like defense but for those who said BA's passing offense has matured throughout the season... HOW??????? BA's offense needs to step it up. I liked the Tate kid though

    Jeff,

FYI, I am an MBA fan and alumnus.

I also am a big fan of BA, because I like the way they play the game.

Injuries aside, Ensworth was in the game with us to the very end. We did not "control" the line of scrimmage against them like I thought we should have. In order to "blow someone out", one must dominate the line of scrimmage. Ensworth displayed great discipline, pad control, and gap control. Our backs weren't running wide open through gapping holes. We played well enough to win that game, but that is about it. The injuries were really unfortunate for us, but good teams find a way to win in the face of adversity, which MBA did. I do believe we have a good team, but Ensworth, BA, and Ryan are right there with us.

  6. I have tried to keep perspective, and have consistently told people that this year's BA team is not as good as last year's state champs...at least not yet. You can beat the "good" teams with a one dimensional offense and a solid defense, but if you make too many mistakes, a well coached and talented team like MBA will make you pay.

Simply put, MBA was the better team. I hate losing to MBA as much as anyone, but have great admiration for their program. See you in the playoffs, I hope.

    Well stated.

Both teams just seemed to be playing on edge and trying not to lose the game. Again, I think that both teams were thinking ahead to a possible re-match. Don't get me wrong, both wanted to win, but this was a very close to the vest game on both sides of the ball.

As you suggest in your post, I too hope these two teams meet again, but they both must play better to make that happen. Yes, I know MBA beat Ensworth, but that game was close just like this one, so you can throw a blanket over those three, and Ryan is supposedly right there as well.

I believe Ryan is at Ensworth next week; is that correct? If so, we'll have a better idea on where Ryan fits into the equation. They may be the best of the bunch...

Both teams stayed healthy tonight which was very good to see.

  7. This was really an ugly game between two evenly matched clubs. Fumbles, interceptions, etc... That said, the level of competition helps create performances like that.

Both teams kept this one close to the vest as you could tell that both know this is not the last time these two will face off this year.

Congrats to both teams on playing hard, but both need to play better to have a chance to meet again. From what I have seen/heard, Ryan and Ensworth will factor into the equation as well before season's end.

These may truly be the best two teams in the state, but both Ryan and Ensworth could have beaten both teams tonight.

  8. Fantastic game MBA and Ensworth.

Ensworth is an excellent football team that is certainly a contender to win it all.

MBA did a good job of pounding it out when they needed to, but it seemed to me that Ensworth really did a good job of gap control. IMO, when there were holes there, the MBA backs did not do a good job of finding them; their cuts were slow and late. With Ensworth's speed, the holes quickly filled.

I was excited to be there; it's the start of a great rivalry! I'd love to see this one play out again later this year.

    Roll Red Roll!

  9. the video stream, with audio (in stereo) was awesome! Whoever is responsible for it, many thanks...it was like watching on a regular TV.

Looks like the stadium was packed...are the students all in the end zone now? The cameras never panned over there. But the visitors' side had no empty seats.

And what is up with Coach Bowers and the golf shoes?

MBA really needs to work on the passing game...it was non-existent tonight. Really conservative gameplan by Coach McGuigin.

great win...congrats to Coach McGuigin...I bet this was an emotional win for him over his former coach and mentor.

    Yes, the feed was fantastic!

  10. As I stated in an earlier post, Williamson County has tons of athletes and excellent coaching. Hats off to Ravenwood for never thinking they were out of this game.

    MBA,

the game lasts for 4 quarters. It sounds like you played well for 3 quarters; let's play four from here on out!!!

    Roll Red

  11. Chill dude. I don't even remember who it was. I just remember that they didn't put up much of a fight. I wasn't trying to insult that school but I guess that came off kinda bad. Anybody can have a bad day or season I guess. When you see us or hear about us you will understand why it is hard for me to contain myself. Byrnes is the only team that has a chance to beat us this year.

"Dude", I am not on an SC HS board talking about how BA is going to crush you. You bring this upon yourself. If you were humble like the fans of MBA's developing rivalries in KY, then you would be warmly received here. Simply show some respect for someone else's program; I can promise you that you'll be respected here on this board and most importantly in person upon your arrival to TN. SC is a wonderful state full of lots of pride, but I can promise you that that same level of pride exists in small towns just like Anderson, SC all over this country. West is not special; there are many good and quite a few great programs across this country. You are going to be the guest of one of the great programs on Saturday. Please conduct yourself in a manner that is representative of the great State of South Carolina.

    Go get'em Eagles!!!!!

  12. I was feeling good about things because of how good we are. Now I have seen film. Coach Luckadoo tries to make us worried about every opponent we play so we don't take them lightly. He didn't even try that after we watched the films. How could he? You give it to the same guy just about every play. It is going to take us 15 minutes to prepare. There's not even a lead blocker! If you guys are calling Brentwood your #2 team in the state of Tennessee your state will be even more embarrased than they were when you threw one of your patsy teams to Byrnes. No excuses this time SC vs TN ranked vs ranked. Take it like men, don't give me your "rebuilding crap".

I am doing my best not to laugh my ___ off at RamsRule. Know of what you speak before you speak, little lamb. I think you should spend some time reading Sun Tzu.

The patsy of whom you speak is one of the most storied football programs in the Southeast, and yes that includes South Carolina, with over 100 years of history that includes many State Championships. Many collegiate and professional players have walked its halls and have gone on to lead major corporations and hold some of the highest positions in the Government and the Military.

The Carolinians that I know and with whom I enjoyed my four years of college do not conduct themselves in the manner that you do; they are not boastful and overly prideful; they are good, humble people like you'll get to know in Brentwood, TN. They will be overly hospitable even for you, because they are good people.

I was at the Byrnes game, and that is still one of the best HS teams I have ever seen, and yes, they did catch MBA at the best/worst possible time. You speak proudly of yourself to think you are in the same ballpark as that team.

I am very familiar with SC as I played not far from lovely Anderson in college straight up HWY 29, and I spent a good amount of time around Anderson, Clemson, Easley, Belton, and Honea Path.

As it relates to BA, please continue to think of yourself as far superior in ability and game planning. Do you even know how many young men they have placed in D-1? It may be younger than MBA, but its young history is chock full of State Championships and incredible accomplishments; it is truly one of the top 5 programs year in/out in the Southeast. Since its founding in 1969, I challenge you to find a school with a better record.

I have the utmost respect for BA, its players, and most certainly its coaches; you will too, very soon.

BA and all of us that support that program are eagerly awaiting your arrival.

  13. Excellent post, although I would have added Mrs. Bowen, Coach Elliot, Mr. Caldwell and Dr. Drake. And your final paragraph is dead on. Nothing would perk up Ravenwood's season like beating an undefeated team at home.

Your additions are spot on. I am not sure how I forgot Coach E; he is still a favorite.

  14. Coach Bennett would be disgusted with all of this!

Coacht B, as he was known to many, is still revered by all who knew him and knew of him at MBA.

Many things would be different if he was still there walking the hill.

Thank you for bringing up Coach Bennett. I needed to smile today. After we graduated, we referred to him as "John R".

Coach Bennett, Coach Owen, Mrs. Lowry, Dr. Gaffney, Dr. Neergaard, Dr. Pruitt, and Mr. Gaither, et al... what dramatic impact they had on all of our lives who were fortunate enough to have walked the Halls of the Hill with them and to have learned from them in the classroom and on the fields. I wish they could know what profound impact they have had upon our lives. It would be totally inappropriate for me to leave out the impact Coach Gentry from BA has had on my life as well. He too is an incredible man. May God Bless them all!

As for the game, MBA should pay attention to taking care of business and not read the hype about how good they may or may not be. Each young man has a responsibility and expectation to execute his assignment; if each does so, MBA should win. Ravenwood should in no way be underestimated; Williamson County as a whole has become a hotbed of talent, good coaching, and solid results. Forget that both BHS and RHS are struggling so far; they still have a lot of talent and good coaching.

    Roll Red Roll!

  15. It was a line-dominated, smash mouth game. CJ looked pretty much 100%, but Smyrna did a great job keeping him in check. Defenses were really very good for both teams. The difference in the game was a long TD pass play by BA...otherwise no real game-breakers.

    Welcome back to the T!

    Good to be back. I've been working too hard /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Glad to hear BA is playing well, and glad to hear that CJ is back full speed.

Sounds like I missed a great game.

  16. MBA wins 16-12 in a thriller. It was truly the story of two halves -- speed won the first half for Hillsboro and coaching won the second half for MBA. I mean come on, clearly the MBA staff made some decisive half time adjustments. Also, the Burros were driving down the field with about 1:30 remaining to have a chance to win and they did not even use one of their three time outs to set up a crucial 3rd down conversion play. So, they failed to convert and then rushed to convert on fourth down. Ridiculous -- you cannot take your time outs home with you.

I guess what "they" say is true -- the privates have superior coaches who are able to get more out of less athletic kids. Don't believe me, watch the tape of this game and check out the overall records of the privates versus the publics so far this season. (Sorry to burst D1 supporters' bubble, but there is NO WAY that anyone can use the "private schools cheat by recruiting" defense tonight because there is no doubt Hillsboro had the better athletes. Wow, much better athletes.)

    Let the rebuttles begin...

    That's a reach!

IMO, you are wrong about both schools. Both are well coached, and both have excellent athletes. Is Hillsboro more talented? In the skill positions, yes, they are more talented, but up front on both sides of the ball, I think MBA is more talented.

I'll give you that MBA has a solid staff, but don't think that the Burros are not well coached. Hillsboro played sound defense for most of the night with solid gap control; that comes from being well coached.

It's not like MBA doesn't have a few players on their side of the ball either...

  17. They said on TV he got X-Rays, and it is a bruised collarbone. Hope that's right.

What a great game, and a very gutty performance by Smyrna coming back and almost winning it without their star QB. Whomever said Smyrna's "season is shot" is just plain wrong. IMO, both teams are better for playing this game, and it was a real treat for the fans.

...and Sharptop, that really may well be one of the most idiotic posts ever on CoachT, and that's saying a lot!

    Hey Itzme,

I hope you are doing well; long time...

Who played well tonight? Was CJ back at full speed? How was the D?

    Thanks!

Hope the QB is OK for Smyrna!

  18. Wow!

This was a great HS game. I am sure there are many opinions about the game, but I think Hillsboro's backs and receivers may be some of the most gifted athletes I have seen in a long while. MBA kids are still missing tackles, and it's not because they are poor tacklers; the Burros can play ball.

I am not sure that I enjoyed more the fact that these old rivals were playing again or that this was just a great game.

Hillsboro gashed the MBA D for a lot of the game, but MBA made big plays at crucial times to win a very close game.

Hats off to both schools; tonight was a special night to be on The Hill.

  19. I think both teams will be very well prepared from a scouting standpoint b/c they know eachother so well. Potter is running the same offense at BA that he used at McCallie and I assume McCallie is running something similar to what they did under Potter. I agree that there is no way either side downplays this game. The kids on both teams will understand the significance of this game and emotions will run high. The storyline is incredible. It will be a VERy hyped game! They are playing it at UTC's stadium to help accomodate the large crowd they are expecting.

I think that CJ will be fine after being held out of the game on Friday night.

Should be a heckuva game. Looking forward to both schools representing themselves very well. BA has the talent to take care of business, but McCallie in Chattanooga is always a tough game; add in the emotion, and who knows what will happen.

Travel safe and send us updates.
