  1. 1. Germantown (May repeat as 5A champs)

    2. East (Is loaded and has been here before)

    3. CBHS (down a little from last year)

    4. Collierville (better than last year with Hall @QB)

    5. Melrose (way...way down after losing 13 senior starters, but is still Melrose)

    6. White Station (will battle C'ville for 2nd place)

    7. Briarcrest (will be best 2nd best DII team in memphis area

    8. West Memphis (has been underrated recently)

    9. Covington (always very good)

10 Whitehaven (lets see what the new coach can do... always good talent)

11 Millington (can Supplant Bolton in region 7, has the 2 fastest backs in the area)

12 Mitchell (class 2A darkhorse...Franklin is the best back in shelby-metro area)

Others to consider.... Bolton, MUS, Houston, Cordova, ECS, Harding, Fairly

  2. Melrose is apparently in a cream-puff region. Maryville, while not in a dominant region, still has some big games to pull off. All the talking will turn to action on Dec. 7... And Placall, what did you mean by athleticall? Did you even go to high school?

why would you say Melrose is in a cream puff division? Statistically Region 8 4A is the toughest league in the state in Div. I go to either Earl Nall or Sonny Moore. Take every team in the league, and average the league together for one score, Region 8 is the toughest league reguardless of class

3 different teams in region 8 have won state titles in the last 4 years while Maryville is the king of the rost in their league.

Please try to be more factual

  3. Milan has played some good teams - Huntingdon, Central Merry, and Covington is up this week. Their region is usually a little stronger top-to-bottom, but Westview and Union City are both down this year. They have a legitamite shot at going to Murfreesboro this year.

However, I think they'd be hard-pressed to hang with the better Memphis teams like Germantown and CBHS. I wouldn't mind seeing more games played between rural west TN teams and Memphis metro teams in the future. I think it would make both sides better in the long run.

Theboredguy. I disagree about memphis playing rural west tn more often. I think that there are some solid teams in rural west tennessee. But if you guys notice, not one person in West Tennessee bothered to even respond to my last couple of post were I listed the Head to Head playoff records of Memphis VS Rural West TN. Memphis teams have no reason to travel to rural west TN to play games. The competition within shelby county is awefully stiff in each league. Even in region 8-2A, Oakhaven, Tredwell, and Manassas have their hands full with Memphis Carver and Mitchell within their league. Wooddale, obviously has a full plate with memphis East, Melrose, and Ridgeway in 8-4A. Raliegh Egypt, figures to be the #2 seed in 8-3A, yet they nearly knocked of jax ss in week o. It would be nice to see Milan play memphis East for instance, But East can get just as formidable a non-league foe as milan without leaving shelby county. Look at Memphis East' non league slate

    Week 0 Briarcrest won 20-7

week 1 Christian Brothers loss 27-26 in OT

    week 4 Raliegh-Egypt won 36-24

    week 5 ECS loss 14-20

all of those teams would likely have given Memphis East about as daunting a challange as anyone could have outside of shelby couny. Plus, you obviously save alot in travel cost. Would Milan return the trip? this is why you dont see a lot of intersectional games. CBHS coaches have gone on record as saying that Melrose and Memphis East, might be as tough as anyone they have faced in all of D-II this year. Why would they play Lipscomp or Ezell, or CPA in a non-league game. Likewise CPA can get just as tough a nonleague game from MBA or Brentwood acad. in their own midstate area.

  4. many people felt that the CBHS win over Melrose was Fraud. Not by CBHS, but by the refs who called the game. with under a minute to go Melrose 8-7. the refs bailed CBHS from the jaws of defat with a pass interfenence on 4th and 26 CBHS then Kicked a FG as the Clock expired. CBHS 10 Melrose 8. I hate it for melrose, because with all of the college prospects and the attention they get nationally, they had a super chance to get into the USA today super 25. With a loss that will likely not be possible. I cant Believe maryville hasn't gotten more national recognition with 3 consecitive state Tiles in the rugged Class 4A

  5. Well Rebelron, I would not neccicerily say that Melrose is the team to beat. I do think they are the best team on this half of the state. I can't believe they destroyed East the way they did. I mean of course when you play good teams and turn the ball over like that, then the score can get ugly. Nontheless, even if both teams had brought their A games, I think Melrose still wins by 2 TD's. The 4A turnament should be interesting to say the least. Now don't sleep on Memphis East, they are always in the thick of the discussion when we talk 4A ball. they will make it at least to the QTR finals this year. Melrose will probably win the rematch and then travel to Hillsboro. But lets not sleep on my good friend Buck Fitzgearld at Pearl-Cohn either. obviously they have already proven that they can beat the Burros! I would love to see a Melrose Pearl-Cohn semi-final. Both Bands will play, would love a good ole post thanksgivin' Turkey Leg in the hood

  6. memphisplayer, Maryville whipped Memphis East 33-14 in 2000. That was a whipping.TJ Brock had 180yds rushing that game. Memphis East never adjusted to the unbalanced line that Maryville ran that day.

Maryville beat Hillsboro 34-27 in 2001. Maryville was definatly the better team that year. Maryville's offense was too much for Hillsboro's defense. MHS had the ball on the 15 yd line when the game ended. They could have easily scored another touchdown.

Maryville was fortunate to beat Hillsboro last season. But. Hillsboro could not throw the ball a lick. That came back to haunt them. Maryville is balanced. Nobody got to see the real Rebels last year because they had a ton of injuries. Starters Andrew Hodge,Russell Clement,Andrew Eubanks and Chris Large missed 4 or more games because of injuries. When they came back they weren't 100%. Alex Rouse missed the season. Lucas Tipton and Cole McKinney played hurt all year.Chris McCord missed a game. Before Maryville started having all those injuries they were playing the best football that I ever seen a Maryville team play. After the 1st Morristown West game is when they started getting the injury bug.It is amazing that they won state with all those injuries.

Maryville won those 3 titles in a row because they have very good football players,They are Smart,Well Coached and Disciplined. They play as a team.

This whole thing is my fault. If anyone reads my post, usually I stay away from this kind of stuff. I hate these subjective arguments ie... who is the best long stapper in East TN, or who is the best 9th grade Offensive guard. That kind of debate is pointless. I apologize for even starting this debate. However, I am indeed intitled to my opinion, so since the debate has started let me give my 2 cents worth.

2000 Maryville VS Memphis East recap

If you were at the 2000 title game then you know that 33-14 is very deceiving. East Led 8-0 after the 1st QTR. Maryville scored in the 2nd QTR but East still led. With 15 seconds to go in the half, Maryville missed a FG attempt on on 4th and long That would have given them the laad going into the half 9-8. But East was flagged for roughing the kicker giving Maryville a last shot with 1st and goal to go. East should have been able to simply take a knee, and go in with a 2 point lead 8-6 to end the 1st half. Consequently marville has 1st and Goal and throws a TD pass with just seconds to go in the 1st half.

    Maryville 13 - Memphis East 8 @ Halftime

Both teams had possessions to start the 3rd QTR but Maryville drew 1st blood. Maryville score on a TJ brock run to take a 19-7 lead late in the 3rd QTR. Things were startting to look gloomy for East. But East quickly recovered after Ladarius Price brought the kickoff back to around midfield. East put together its best drive since its 1st possession of the game, were East took it 80 yards to start the ball game, East moved the ball to 1st and Goal from the 6 yard line Before Price threw the most ill advised pass in the history of football. The Maryville kid returns the errant pass 98 yards for a TD which still stand as the state record for longest INT return in Blue Cross Bowl History

now the score is Maryville 26 East 7. But obviosly, if the wind had been blowing a different way it could have just as Easily been Marville 19 Memphis East 14

East nontheless, responded with a 4th QTR TD, to shave the Lead to 26-14 But maryville put the game on Ice with a late meaningless 4th QTR TD. I am not at all incenuating that Maryville ran up the score. But Maryville's last TD with a few minutes to go was irelevant to the outcome of the game.

Final Score Maryville 33 Memphis East 14

Throw in the $12 and become a Plus Member.  A get together has been discussed on the Plus Open Discussion Board.

Your 2-point conversion theory is a unique one.  I hope Melrose continues going for 2 this year.

I believe Hillsboro's kicker is at Western Kentucky.

What makes you think if you went to a Melrose - Hillsboro game, you will be going east two weeks in a row?  Hillsboro has a few players that you didn't see last year.

I'm sorry stan, I think you misinterpreted what I meant about comming two weeks in a row. I simply meant that, I know I am comming to the Blue Cross Bowl., I attend every year. I simply meant, I didn't want to come to the mid-state area on back to back weeks. I could, but I doubt I will make it to a semi final game. Obviously I did it in 2001, but the 1st trip was with the team when Hillsboro beat us 10-6. I was not impling that Melrose would win causing me to come two weeks in a row. Although I think that Memphis East, Hillsboro, Maryville, and Melrose in past years have all been about on the same level. Hillsboro has been to back to Back state finals. Prior to that Memphis East played in back to back finals. Melrose could have just as easily been their in either 2000, or 2001. But we beat them to earn the semi-final birth. As a matter of fact this is no slap at Maryville, but in the past 3 state finals, I didn't neccicerily think they were the better team. I still can't believe Hillsboro lost last year! Here is how I view class 4A state-wide.

    1. Maryville- Arguably the top program in the state reguardless of class.

    T2. Hillsboro

    T2. Melrose

T2. Memphis East (These three have been 3 peas in a pod. one of these 3 schools has represented the west half in the last 4 State Finals.) If indeed we see a Hillsboro-Melrose rematch as seems almost certain, then 5 years

    5. Morristown West is the next best program. But Maryville has baicly handled them in recent years. They are the only school in my top tier to have not played for a state title in recent years, well along with Greenville.

    6. Cleveland

    7. Knoxville Central

    8. Whitehouse-Won 3A title recently

    9. Greenville

    10 Pearl-Cohn-

See Maryville dosen't currntly have another Elite team to keep them from getting to the finals year in and year out. Its really tough for East, Melrose, Hillsboro and pearl cohn to get out of the west half because most of the premiere teams in class 4A are all clustered in the west bracket. Obviously Maryville can beat whom ever emerges, but I think that Ron Adylett would agree that physically, Melrose was the best team they faced. Whats really crazy is that Memphis East should have beaten Melrose last year in the QTR finals Melrose prevailed 14-12....... PS still no kicker for EAST LOL

Memphis East is loaded next year! more so than usual

  9.

Some folks get a false read as to the true strength of Memphis. but when the playoffs come reality hits! Mark my word, Memphis(region 8) will go 4-0 head to head with region 74A in the playoffs this year!

You're right about 4A, but history says different in 2A and 3A. From 99 thru 01 the rural West TN teams were 12-5 vs Memphis in 2A and 13-6 vs 3A. During that stretch the Memphis regions had exactly 0 teams in the semi finals. Ridgeway was an awesome team last year and Mitchell had a good run, but year in year out, Memphis hasn't stacked up very well against rural West TN. Melrose, East and Ridgeway will dominate 7-4A this year.

RKF just out of curiosity, why did you begin your assesment of Rural west dominance with 1999. As far as I am concerned 1999 is the same as The year 1 AD. everything prior to 1999 might as well be BC(Before Christ)

  10. Last year Melrose hardly ever kicked. It became a situation that coach ingram figured that they had better odds ad convering the 2 pt conversion thN GETTING THE pat. The formula I always use is that if you are 50 percenton 2 pt tries, its the same as 100 percent in PAT's. unless you are automatic like hillsboro was when we played you guys in 2001 I would rather go for 2. By the way where is the kicker you all had in 2001-2002. I doubt I will come to Nashville 2 weeks in a row. I would like to meet some of you guys at the blue cross bowl. Lets form a coacht fan club and all of us can chip in on a hospitality suite.

  11. I'm a non-Memphis west TN guy as most of you know, but I have to agree with rollredroll. You're talking about some quality 4A, 5A, and D-II schools there. I do think a select few west TN teams could play with some of those he listed, but I would be surprised if any of them could hang with CBHS.

Maybe we'll see some games like this in the future, such as Covington-Germantown this year. I think it would be good for football in this area.

You say we need to see more Games of Memphis vs West TN ha ok lets look at head to head in Last years playoffs

There were only 24 playoff Games where Memphis teams faced teams from rural west Tn in 2002. It seems like rural west Tn is stron during the regular season when weak Memphis teams like Manassas travel tp places like union city, Milan and so forth. Some folks get a false read as to the true strength of Memphis. but when the playoffs come reality hits! Mark my word, Memphis(region 8) will go 4-0 head to head with region 74A in the playoffs this year!

  12. Melrose is the best Team I have seen in quite some time. I was on the Memphis East Staff when we lost to Maryville in 2000 and when we lost to Hillsboro in 2001.I have since left East to take over a Assistant Head coach/Defensive coordinator at another local school here in Memphis. I didn't feel that we were at all out manned in either game. I counted 3 Maryville TD's as a result of East Turnovers. This is the first time I can ever recall Memphis East being Handled in this fashion on Both sides of the line of Scrimage.

To some degree, I think its a slap in the face at Melrose and Many other Inner city teams when everyone assumes that the Rural and suburban teams will naturally control the lines of scrimmage. Most people usually feel that the only way Inner city teams can win is to throw the ball and let the natural athleticism of the kids overwhelm their opponents. This is what everyone talked about at the Blue cross Bowl in 2001. I was at the Hospitality suite and people were talking about Austin-East in this way as well as Melrose 1996-1998 and Memphis East in 1999 and 2000. This Melrose team is as physical a team as I have seen. Most East coaches thought Melrose was signifgantly more physical than CBHS. CBHS BEAT East 27-26 in OT while Melrose beat East 35-0!

Well my friends I am here to tell you that Melrose is about as complete an outfit as there is. East entered Tonights game avg. 320 yards per game Rushing, 390 Total offense. Melrose held them to about 75 total yards 50 of that came late during mop up action. Offensively Melrose had Balance, Joseph Doss is the Defending class 3A 110 Hurdles Champ he is only 5'8 but is electrifingly quick and explosive. Melrose has half a dozen SEC recruits. The QB Heffner has to be the Leading candidate for 4A Mr. Football, Corey Kizer is 6'3 190 and is the defending class 3A 400M champ. Kizer has offers from everyone from Miami to Auburn (Exept UT. Carlos Armour Who Anchored Melrose's State champion 4x100 relay is another world class type recruit, Ellix Wilson (Cedric Wilson's Younger Brother is a stud at DB. He does have an offer from UT among others.

Finally Kenny Ingram at Melrose has engineered this outfit into one of the most formidle machines I have ever seen. It will be very interesting to see how this thing plays out. Melrose won't even be tested until the semifinals at the earliest. From what I here, Hillsboro is not as strong as some past years. I pay close attention to powerratings at what not. Alot of people wonder how Melrose could be ahead of Maryville in the enall ratings, I can know see why!

This is a message to StanTrott, No disrespect intended but Yes Melrose CAN Kick The Football.

  13. This once again is a huge match up. Last year 15,000 saw Melrose win during the regular season. Melrose also won in the QTR Finals 14-12. Melrose has been very impressive. East is comming off of a big win over defending 3A state champs Ridgeway on friday. The winner will win the regin 8-4A title. Both have been ranked in the top 4 or 5 in all power ratings this year.

  14. Kirby didn't impress me either. I also think white station might be a tad bit overrated. Nontheless they are a very good team. I just dont believe they are an elite bunch yet. Region 8 5A is simply down. I always think its down. No one ever win a game VS good competition outside the memphis area. When was the last time a team in region 8 5A won a semi match up VS a mid-state team. I will tell you when, it was the 1994 season when Germantown did it. thats 10 seasons ago! however Major Wright still has to be the State coach of the year. 0-10 to 5-1 in 2 years is incredible in 5A. By the way, Kirby has unbelievable quickness at WR and RB. White station has very little secondary talent. White station will struggle with Whitehaven. They have a better shot VS Germantown because of their lack of speed. Seems like a bad match up
