You've normally got some pretty darn good takes sir, but imma have to absolutely disagree on this particular one.
In a perfect world, IMO, baseball would begin alittle later, and the TSSAA would finally concede that trying to have everything wrapped up before June is just too compressed, and have baseball continue after traditional school ending dates. I'd really like to see the regular season start a week or two later, wrap up the regular season the Thursday or Friday prior to Memorial Day, then come back and crank up the post season after the holiday weekend.
I mean, in Tennessee, we play regular season football for 11 weeks, regular season basketball for 13 weeks (and a post season that lasts over a month,) and regular season baseball for (checks notes) 7 weeks?!??!?
That's absolutely ludicrous, trying to get in a 30-40 game regular season PLUS the entirety of the post season in only 10 1/2 weeks. All the while, basketball gets nearly 19 weeks for a 25-30 game regular season and postseason. Baseball in this state is just entirely far too compressed.
*Edit*
After rereading what I typed, I suppose we could also help things out if we didn't drag basketball out for 4 1/2 months in this state.

We need to get TSSAA to start season a week earlier....
Not going to happen! That is basketball time. Plus, you aren't thinking of the small schools again: 16-20 kids on roster and 6-7, or more, play basketball. Now what? We aren't in a situation where we have 45 in program and 40 are baseball only players. Tough to get the basketball players ready for the current calendar and you suggest moving the baseball start up? You really need to step off that reservation. Finally, I bet you are still going to see lopsided scores at the "A" tournament. Day 3 and people are still out of pitching. The "PowersBaugh" format may shake up who gets there, but it won't change what goes down there. Also, you said baseball isn't softball. You said it is a series sport. So why is the NCAA format the same in baseball and softball? Double Elimination regionals and 2-3 supers.
Word on the street is the TSSAA may go back to the old format. Time will tell. I'll send my invoices to the reservation for reimbursement. ghost is right. It is a financial strain on small schools that host and have to travel/hotel/food/fuel. Maybe yall can come up with some of that Boro NIL $$$

Agree, the format is alright, but the region should have started Monday, this would give room to move games and adjust for weather. Also something that most have not thought of, lets say Saturday in the loser's bracket a team is in a do or die situation and their #1 pitcher throws 106 pitches to send his team to Sectionals. That pitcher will not be eligible until Thursday of the sectionals meaning his team would have to win 1 of 2 on Wednesday for that player to get back on the mound. The format is not bad but the timing of it is not good at all.
TSSAA isn't going to add a week. They want baseball done ASAP.......get out of the way...........so now baseball is forced to move up their district tournaments to get them completed by the TSSAA set date. This means baseball loses a whole week of that long 7-week regular season.
I have been vocal about being against this new format. Too many games in too short a period on small schools with small resources. We said it from the beginning....................factor in rain!!!!! Factor in Graduations!!! Factor in financial issues.
"THEY" say it is a series sport? I am not disagreeing with that at all, but there are other factors that have to be examined.
The calendar for starters.
I spoke with an AD who was trying to figure out if their regional game was going to be played because the host school wasn't being very communicative. The reason for the importance was "We are 2 1/2 hours one way and if we are rained out then why spend the money on hotel rooms. This is an expensive thing."Hey, what about Florida? Unless something has changed recently, their postseason format was single elimination (like the NCAA Basketball Tournament). Play and win on Monday...........next round will be next Monday........and so on once a week till final four. I am not saying that is the way to go or that I even like that, but just throwing it out that a hotbed baseball state like Florida played its postseason weekly,, not cram it in a few days.

Baseball IS a Series Sport.
Look around. Every state around us uses a 3-game series format.

I have worked Spring Fling in Murfreesboro since it has been moved to Murfreesboro.
Look at the scores over the years, especially 'A' class.
Teams get to Spring Fling because they had an arm that won on Monday and Friday.
They get to bracket play in Spring Fling and once that one arm has thrown some of the scores get ugly. Slugfest.
Baseball is about the best TEAM getting there and winning, not the best pitcher.

That isn't going to change. Why do you think it is going to change by adding games on thin teams and pitching staffs? With pitch counts and rest days, the slugfests are still going to happen.
It is a 5-6 tournament in 4 days. Just who do you think won't run out of pitching and turn into a slugfest?
Look, I will say it again...............3A-4A I would support.
But don't sit down here and try to tell me that because you have worked the state tournament since it came to Murfreesboro, and you spectate from your awesome seat, that you know what is best for us. Respect you, but you need to stay in your lane on this one. You don't live the inside working of a small school program. And for some reason you think because you force a "series" and added games on already stressed pitching (because they have to catch, play shortstop, etc.) is going to dramatically increase play and avoid "slugfests" at the state tournament?

Anyone available to play tomorrow (Tuesday April 4th) in the general middle Tennessee area?
Will Travel.
We have played 4 games all year. Can't find games.
Will play A-AA or AAA-AAAA JV Teams.
Another product of a great district alignment by TSSAA when you only have a 3-tram district (Only 2 opponents).

We had it enforced on us yesterday for the first time. Gene M. had said you could have a normal line or cross at the TBCA conference this year, however yesterday the umpires said crosses were not allowed…
I have been told two things by two sets of umpires. One said only a one line under the eye/no vertical lines (cross) and at another game the umpires said can have a cross. Goodness..........its eye black
On another note: Pitcher hasas black gove with grey lacing. All lacing is grey. Pitched entire 2022 season without a single word. Goes out game one and glove has to go. Was told that glove cannot be white/grey. A logo or wording can be white/grey because that is not the glove. Where is the Tylonol ?

Game three is at the same location as games 1 & 2. There is no traveling to the lower seed for game 3
Major issues with this format. "They (whomever they is) wants to see the best teams in state tournament, not the best arm." The following is from a small school (Class A/AA) opinion. Note: If I am a large school (Class AAA/AAAA), I would be for it. More kids in program. More kids to choose from. Higher percentage of POs (Pitcher Only) in your program.
That is a crap statement anyway because of the new pitch-count rules. A guy who throws 110/120 on Friday, for example, can't pitch till Wednesday of the state tournament which could be an elimination game. So you are not seeing him in the opening round. Then if he pitches on Wednesday, and unless he throws less than 45, his tournament run is over, because the state title game is Friday.
Back it up Terry: Lets say the sub state game 3 is rained out as pushed that pitcher one day then there is a possibility he will not even throw a pitch in state tournament because of pitch rules. They (whomever They is) say, "We are tired of seeing bad baseball at the state tournament" Crap again. You are going to see bad baseball now. How is that?
We are in a time where taxing kids' arms are a big deal. No matter what level. Most high schools, especially the lower classes (1A,2A), where your best arm (pitcher) is usually the SS, right? Not always, but you see that a bunch. Also, a lot of small schools have their catcher as their #2 or #3 or their weekend tournament guy which means come postseason time that catcher just became a starter. What is your point, XBOX? Region tournament time: The game one starter is your SS, pitches whatever you need to get that important game one win, then he has to go to SS for game 2,,3, and possibly game 4, making all those ground ball throws and such. Fast forward to game 3, and there is your boy, Mr. Grinder, The Dish Captain, whose thrown the ball 1,000 times the past two games, and now you are asking him to pitch an elimination game to get to the sub state round. 120 is now on the table. He is the best you have left, so go give us 7 innings or 120.
Ok! Congrats! You have now advanced and in a couple of days you are in a 2 of 3 series. You are traveling, so you play games one and two on first day. Anyone you use for 25 pitches are more can't throw the next day (game three) if you need. So, that kid who pitched complete game in game one or whatever load is put on him, now has to play game two and game three (if nec.) in a prime position.
We are adding more games in a shorter window on these kids. So, are we protecting arms? What about when that Class A regional gets to game three or the sub state gets to game three? What about those whom have played the extra regional and sub state games is now in state tournament? "They" say we are tired of seeing bad baseball, but are you actually improving game play? Are you sure you won't see even more bad baseball due to teams having kids being overworked in a short window of time and now having to pitch in state tournament?
Class A/AA teams don't have the roster depth to pitch on a college level type of tournament/schedule. Now now.......Some do, so I will not say all, but the majority don't have the depth to do what is asked to avoid "Bad Baseball....." Not my words, but "They"
Again, if I am Murfreesboro or Knoxville or outter Memphis (the big schools), I say bring it on. (Just wanted to remind I am speaking for the small, mostly rural, non-open county zoned schools.
Back to it: So you have to travel to a sub state......say 2 1/2-3 hours to Chattanooga. Ok, you staying in a hotel because you are playing two with possibility of game three the next day. You have to put up your team ($$$$), you have to put up and pay for sit time for your bus driver ($$$$). Uh oh........Game three day has a big storm rolling in and washed it out (Don't say it doesn't happen because I have lived turning the bus around on a sub state day and have to go back the next day), so now we have to scramble, get another night in hotel ($$$$), same for bus driver ($$$$), and I almost forgot........You have to feed your team multiple meals ($$$$$).
You win and now have to pay hotel and meals and driver again for state tournament if you aren't close enough to commute. Cha-Ching!!! But hey, doesn't this fell like the Road to Omaha?
We haven't gotten into the educational side of this. All of this during EOC testing, final exams, and GRADUATION.
I get it, let them graduate at home plate on the road at some school who is hosting sub state. I have seen it, it is awesome, and would love to experience it. If you have never experienced graduation at smaller, mostly rural, community based schools, then you do not know that there is a systematic and cultural difference with graduation and a school of 1,800.
Not disvaluing any graduation but the smaller schools take it as the ultimate event. Not talking about the kids, but parents and administrators.Look, it is HS baseball. If I have a stud arm and my regional opponent has a stud arm, then it is a good night for HS baseball. If I lose the game, so be it. Shake hands, wish them well, and lets move on. If it is sub state and same thing; our best vs their best. Take a shot and move on.
I love college baseball. I am glued to my ESPN+ account during regionals and supers, but the small schools aren't built for that. I really do not think we are improving game-play.
I have been in this for a very long time. I have seen it all. Been a part of some close games win/lose in regionals and sub state and state tournaments. I have never one time said after a loss, "If we were in a three game series then we would win." Wished my opponent well and told my kids that we gave it a run, and we moved on. I really hope there is a load of schools in the A/AA that would fight it.
I may be in the small minority.........who knows. I would like to see a vote based on classifications, not as a whole. Break it down per class and lets hear the voice.

Man, yall through out all the AAAA schools. Nothing wrong with any of them but they may not want to live in large populated areas. Look for good schools and low crime. And low tax rate. Good Middle School teams are usually those that have the most 8th graders who are in puberty.

That’s never going to happen in the public sector. The schools with 150 kids would be playing schools with 650-700.
If they wanted to cut anything it should be the private division. Count the teams per class there compared to the public. That private league only needs 2 classes.
Why not? 1988 had only 3 Classes.......only and the playoff games were slammed packed and I attended the AAA state title game at Vandy with 32,000 in attendance. I was at 1987 AAA game 28,000
1990 Class A game with 15,000. You don't have to win a state title to have a special year. Less classes means the quarters/semis would be a huge deal. I also say the season goes too long...too many games.....too many playoff spots. Take the top two and open up bowl games for the rest. Would make regular season games more valuable.
Just a take and I know it wouldn't be popular but being a 4-6 team in a playoff is nothing but a money grab, and from what I am seeing, these gates aren't cashing in anyway. I attended a semi-final game and I swear it was like a regular season game. Weak crowds. Finally, I think the NFHS Network has destroyed gates. Do I use it? Yep! But, you can't say it hasn't hurt things. Finally 2.0, put the state title games back at Vandy. The whole vandy neighborhood is a great setup. Kids can always say they played in an SEC stadium.Good topic for discussion

I have a few points on this issue. First, don't think that I am a non-God person b/c I am not.
Our school board has a policy where we can't participate in an athletic event on Sunday without approval (Emergency Situations). Some churches have Wednesday services and some do not. There are some churches that have services throughout the week. I do not agree with any idea of not allowing schools to play on Wednesday. Here is something.......our public school does not allow Sunday games but you see private, christian-based schools playing on Wednesday and Sunday. What about that? It is not baseball's fault that one has to miss practices b/c of church related issues. I had one miss yesterday b/c he had church practice. What do you do? I had a kid tell me he had to leave on a Wednesday practice to go to church. I asked him what would he do if we played tonight. He told me he wouldn't be at the game. How does a coach handle issues that come up on days that are not Wed. or Sun.? We have 21 kids. That's 21 different lives. I can't make everyone happy and try to put together a program. People seem to make baseball the bad guy. I love God and church, so don't take it that way, but it gets frustrating when everytime you turn around someone has something going on except the committment they made to this "extra-curricular" activity. Are they wrong for their decisions........I don't think they are, but what do you do? We don't have Sunday practices. I have had two in six years (both b/c we were in state tournament). It's like politics...............there is no one correct answer............and you can never win an argument on this issue.

E5,
This came up this week. Two players fighting over a grill..........not the cooking kind. What do you suggest? Dig deep into your book.
-
E5 I am seeking advice on some issues. Can you help? First, what do you suggest I do for aching thumb joints from playing the 2064 season on MVP '07? Second, what would you suggest for pain in my neck caused when the anti-lock brakes on my chair went out and I hit head first into the wall? Third, what is the best way to handle a dad who says you are black-balling his son b/c you put him in the DH spot in the lineup?
-
What comes around goes around.
Not in your case muffin......
-
in my opinion, teams that get homefield advantage earn it. so i dont think that homefeild should be taken away from teams that have earned it.
After round 2 the homefield is set by the bracket. It don't matter if a 5 loss team is playing a 13-0 team in the semis, the 5 loss team will host if it is that part of the bracket's turn to host.
-
The best way for a coach to avoid running into those problems would be not to allow any writsbands. Our coach wouldn't allow any bands, gloves, ect. The only time we got to wear gloves was in the playoffs. He now allows gloves but that's it.
I allow my players to wear one wrist band and/or tape one or both of their wrists. They can't wear them above the elbow.

That is what they are doing. They are going to take away the fall time. Comprehension skills my man. Quit just reading what football loses. Read the WHOLE THING!!!!

But D2 used the final week of regular season to play postseason. I tried to schedule a D2 school and they are on a 6-week schedule. Makes no sense. Basketball gets like 30 weeks to play. The basketball postseason is like the NBA postseason. Why have a 7 week season but..........I mean 6 weeks so we can have enough days to get district tournaments in? Makes no sense. Baseball should be pushed to later start and extend to first of June, but that won't happen. Gotta get back to the cash cow chugging (Pigskin and jockstraps......I mean Girdles LOL)
