  1. Powell did not have a good football team this year before the coaching drama.  It will take them several years to recover the mistakes that they have hired over the past five years.  Constantly changing head coaches and administrators is not conducive to a winning attitude and program.

Powell will lose to Gibbs and then Gibbs will win out the next two games also.  Gibbs will finish with four district wins and four losses to put them in the playoffs.  Gibbs still has not beaten a good team this season.

Gibbs is a good football team and the program has improved tremendously since Brad Conley became the head coach.  He is a good role model and motivator.

  2. The Gibbs team weak regular season schedule showed last night at Greeneville. They had not beaten a good team but still made it into the playoffs. This shows how the tssaa playoffs are flawed. These games make money however for the TSSAA organization.

The Greeneville defense stuffed the Gibbs qb that had such a good year. This was the best defense and coaching staff that he had faced. Gibbs was out played and definitely out coached.

The Greeneville and Fulton game will be a good one but Greeneville will not be able to handle the speed of Fulton. Fulton has some kids that can turn the corner quick on offense and have the size and quickness on defense as well. I will be an exciting game. Good luck to both teams.

  3. What was the final score the last time Gibbs vs Greenville in the first round of the playoffs? The game was at Greenville as it is this year. That is a tough place to play. They have great fan support. This again will be another factor for Gibbs to overcome.

The Greenville team has had another good year but are not quite as strong as they were two years ago when they faced Gibbs. The Gibbs team does have a quarter back, a kicker and a back or two that can play but definitely do not have the speed that they had two years ago whey they had the Hibbett kid.

The Gibbs quarterback has carried the team this year. He has made big plays out of nothing and has carried the team in scoring. Without him they would not even be in the playoffs. Most of his big plays have resulted in touchdowns. He breaks off at least one or two big runs every game for scores. I hope he has a good game up there but he will face a much better defense than he has seen all season.

Gibbs has not beaten a good team this season and will definitely see one this week at Greenville. Good luck to both teams.

  4. The winner didn't. Good tournament.

You are mistaken about last years winners. Powell High School from Knoxville and Unicoi County were about to play in the championship game late Saturday night when a bad lightning storm happened. Powell and Unicoi were declared co-champions of the tournament and game was called because of weather.

Powell and Unicoi - co-champions of the tournament 2010.

  5. You left out a score. Powell 1 Soddy Daisy 2 in the Semifinals.

    Powell played SD tough.

    Single elimination tournament scores:

    Maryville 2 Upperman 0

Jefferson County 3 William Blount 0

    Chuckey-Doak 13 Cleveland 2

    Gibbs 7 Lavergne 0

    Chattanooga Central 13 Grainger 0

    Maryville 8 Kingston 2

    Soddy Daisy 9 Grace 0

    Powell 9 Union County 1

    Jefferson County 5 CAK 0

    South Doyle 5 Chucky-Doak 2

    Halls 8 Morristown-West 1

    St. Benedict 5 Heritage 0

    Gibbs 5 Chattanooga Central 3

    Soddy Daisy 4 Maryville 3

    Powell 3 Jefferson County 0

    Halls 9 South Doyle 2

    Gibbs 10 St. Benedict 0

    Gibbs 18 Halls 3

    Championship Game:

    Soddy Daisy 4 Gibbs 1

Congrats to Soddy Daisy for winning the Gibbs Invitational. They went undefeated for the entire tournament.

  7.

All teams listed above are quality choices. With Hamilton County being in East Tennessee, I find it hard to believe that Soddy Daisy is not at the top of list. I would also include Walker Valley and Meigs County. I've seen Maryville, Elizabethton and many of the others play and none have the horses to play with Soddy (and I'm not even a big fan of Soddy). Just my observations.

Until looking it up I didn't realize East TN stretched that far myself. Haven't seen Soddy in a couple years, but I've seen most of the teams listed here and I've seen some of the teams from other areas that Soddy has dominated.

From the teams mentioned here in ET top 10's, they gave good solid spankings to William Blount, Powell, Farragut and Walker Valley. I would pretty much have to agree with the assessment of 3rdbasecoach.

Powell lost to Soddy by a score of 3-1. Powell made two errors to give Soddy one of those runs. That does not suggest a spanking as you say. Soddy is the best aaa team mainly because of their pitching. They will win the state tournament this year.

Soddy Daisy is a solid team and as I said will and did win the AAA State Championship. Soddy has the players and Clifford Kirk and his assistant do a great job year after year. Powell lost to Daniel Boone 2 - 0 in the sectional game at Boone. Powell finished 44 and 15 overall and 14 and 2 in district 3AAA.

  9. The winner of the Carter-Gibbs game will probably be in the playoffs. Gibbs will beat Union County by a large margin. UC is struggling big time. Gibbs will lose to Austin-East. The Carter game is really big for Gibbs. Carter is not as strong as in the past. They do have a good running back but offensive line is questionable at times. Their defense is weak in the secondary. Gibbs should beat them tonight.

Gibbs has not had a tough schedule. They have become much improved with this coaching staff but have not had to play a good team except Fulton and maybe Gatlinburg Pittman.

  10. Gibbs has not had to play a good Knoxville team yet. GP was the best team so far on their schedule. They are a good team and play hard but cannot compete on the level of the teams in Knoxville yet. The program is much better now with the new coaching staff. Gibbs will beat Cosby, lose to Fulton, A-E and Carter. The Gibbs-GP game was a great effort by the Eagles. They played hard and did not give up even in the overtimes.

  11. Has Gibbs HS Football Team ever beat Gatlinburg Pittman either home or away? They used to be in the same district along with Seymour. GP and Seymour would always fight for first and second and Gibbs would usually come in third ahead of Union Co, Tazewell, Jellico and Powell Valley.

I do not remember Gibbs ever beating GP. If they have someone give us the scores and dates please. It would be a great win if Gibbs could pull it out over them and could really make for a great season. AE, Fulton and Carter are still good teams that the Eagles will be facing in a few weeks. Cosby and Union Co are struggling.

  12. The Gibbs football teams over the years have always played hard and most of the time showed a great deal of class. With this new head coach, Brad Conley, there will always be class, discipline and sportsmanship. Its a shame Gibbs did not have someone like him about 30 years ago.

However, the Gibbs football program has never been very competitive when matched against Knoxville opponents. When competing with Powell Valley, Union Co, Jellico, Tazewell, Rutledge and other such schools Gibbs has been very successful. Gibbs always played hard but either did not have the talent or did not have the coaching to win many games against KFL teams.

Congratulations to the Eagles for their great start. The new coaching staff is doing a good job. The players are playing their tails off. Good Luck and Win them all.

My prediction of 7-3 or 6-4 at seasons end still stands as do my statements about the Gibbs opponents.

Sorry if that is so offensive.

  13. Gibbs is playing a really weak schedule with the exception of A-E, Fulton and Carter. Gatlinburg Pittman is usually a respected program but have been down the past few years. Gibbs should finish 7 and 3 or 6 and 4 at seasons end. AE, Fulton and Carter will beat Gibbs and the GP game could go either way.

The success of the Gibbs season will be a result of the weak schedule and the small schools that they are playing having down years. Grainger graduated its quarterback and several keey players while Claiborne has never had a quality football program. Union Co, Cosby, Pigeon Forge and the other Gibbs opponents are having their own troubles fielding a decent football team. Gibbs has never competed in the KIL successfully.

  14. Rattle Rattle-----

With the talent that ruturned in 08 how can you consider not making it back to the "big show" as a good season??? Something dont add up. After going as far as they did in 07 they should have been a shoe-in for the "big show" 08----- BTW, congratz on winning the regular season---- I guess some people likes being the brides made n not the bride------

Powell won the regular season and also the district tournament. Powell swept the district tournament beating Central Halls and Karns. Powell played Halls three times and beat them twice. Powell put Halls out by squeezing in the winning run in extra innings. This magical coaching job that the Halls coach did is in your fantasy head. Teams do not automatically make it to the state tournament.

Farragut just outhit Powell in the Region game and went on to do well in the state tournament. Sometimes the breaks just dont happen in certain games.

By the way did you ever play ball or do you just get off by talking about it? Is this your "fantasy land?"

  15. Well you asked so here goes------>

1st let me say the Panthers have a nice Fr class coming in to replace the Sr they lost. A few hitters & a few strong defensive players will fit in nicely to this group. The return of what should be ther "Ace" pitcher from Farragut will help there chances ALOT also------

However, even with this talent and one of the best pitchers in K-town; i dont see the Panthers making it out of the Districts or Regional's again this year. They are in BAD BAD need of some coaching. This guy was out coached all season last year. He may have been a good coach back-n-tha-day but that was 20 years ago. The cute little blond coaching the Red Devils & the dad running Central from the dug out will out coach him again when it counts. If I was a Panther fan I would run straight to the AD & let him know 2 things------- 1. you accomplished your goal last season & there was "no incidents" & it time for higher goals------- 2. you badly need a coach that will do what it takes to get the black-n-orange back to what they were before they lost the real coach to Since Hill--------

Distric 3 AAA Top 3 as Mr. FantasyLand predicts------

    1. Central

    2. Karns

    3. Halls -- no pitching but the coach could suprize you

    3. Powell

Halls could make it in again this season, You can never count out a GOOD coach. If I was the Beavers I wouldnt be counting on anything just yet.

Powell won the regular season district championship with 12 wins and only 2 losses. One loss was to Halls and one loss was to Central. Powell had 32 wins and only 10 losses for the entire season. That sounds like a pretty good season to most people. You are an idiot. As they say, "An empty can rattles the loudest." "Those that know the least say the most."

  16. The students, community members, and players are excited about the new head football coaching situation at Gibbs High School. The change has been overdue and is finally here. Go up to the summer workouts and see how many players are gathered up there in the evenings to run the stadium steps and doing the workouts. Its amazing how many and how excited they are to be there. The guys are listening and seem to have respect and believing in what is being put in front of them. Good luck to the new head coach and to the Gibbs High School Football Eagles. We will see if Brad Conley can build a football program. He is a good man and role model for the students and players.

    Go Eagles.

  17. Wow Nelly, this one could be an all nighter. This is what I know. Gibbs throws the ball as much as CAK if not more. Gibbs runs the 3-5 defense that CAK ran last year, so it shouldnt be a shocker to them. They BIB and they BOB and they Sandwich and they Whip. Gibbs has great coaches as does CAK. But I believe that this one comes down to tradition. CAK has made the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years, they are coming off a disappointing loss to Johnson County and I expect the Warriors to come out ready to prove a point.

I think CAK wins this one in a game that goes way past 11:00 at night.

    R2D2

Thats interesting how you can put the Gibbs coaches in the same category as the CAK coaches. You obviously are not familiar with the losing tradition and the incompetence of the Gibbs staff. Bill Young and his crew have forgotten more football than the "coaches" up there at GHS ever knew. Coach Young has class and demands it of his coaches and players. You wont find that with their opponents coaches this week.

  18. Suprisingingly, I was at the game the last time Gibbs won and was in college at that time so I'm old enough.

I'm also glad you don't see the streak ending anytime soon cause when it does, whether this year or not, it'll hurt that much more knowing you lost to your neighbors to the East.

Until tomorrow night and play safe.

Correction, people in Gibbs are wearing shoes to school now. Gibbs grads even go to college and pee indoors occasionally. Gibbs football is never going to get any better until there is a coaching change. Its been the same thing for 26 years. Gibbs can compete with the Union Co, Rutledge and such teams. Gibbs has a Halls and a Powell grad who cannot coach with the big boys.

Gibbs last winning season was in 1997. Two years before that was the other winnig season in memory. Halls has a winning football tradition. Gibbs cannot compete equally with any of the Knoxville schools. Kids in Gibbs play football for the love of the game and in spite of the coaching staff.

  19. The Gibbs HS football team had a 2 win and 8 loss season again this year. The Gibbs program has not had a winning season since 1997. The 1997 season was the first in a while. I guess winning softball and baseball games are more important up there in Gibbs than football. The team played in a less competitive region this year and still finished next to last.

We have heard the football coaching staff blames it on the players. The staff each year says that the losses are because they just dont have the talent. Maybe its because athletes in the school just wont play for them. Maybe its because they as coaches cant develop the talent. Maybe its because they as coaches cant motivate and game plan for practice and games. Maybe the community is used to losing and has developed an attitude of "Just Play Football And Dont Care." This is called apathy or who cares. Maybe its a combination of all of these things.

If the talent level of the athletes in the Gibbs community is the problem then maybe there is a genetic difference in the athletes in the surrounding communities such as Halls and Carter. Their football programs are much more successful. Be careful crossing the invisible boundary that divides each of these school zones. Your athletic talent will suddenly disappear when you enter the Gibbs Football Twilight Zone.

  20. Uneven rivalry for years finally got good when Gibbs and Holston combined. Any comments on this years game. I haven't heard much about Gibbs. Good luck to both teams.

    825739726[/snapback]

I have read and heard the past two days about how the Halls 38-7 football win over Gibbs was such a great win. A win is always great but the Gibbs Football program is the worst in Knoxville. Halls has a good team and is well coached. They will have a good year and many years to come.

The only consolation or justification for such a poor overall record for the Gibbs cprogram is that A-E and Fulton were in the region. The nonregion opponents were extremely weak and account for the majority of the wins for Gibbs.

    1993 6 wins 6 losses

    1994 1 win 9 losses

    1995 3 wins 8 losses

    1996 4 wins 7 losses

    1997 8 wins 3 losses

    1998 3 wins 6 losses

    1999 2 wins 8 losses

    2000 3 wins 7 losses

    2001 1 win 9 losses

    2002 4 wins 6 losses

    2003 2 wins 8 losses

    2004 4 wins 6 losses

    Reg Season Record=44 wins 83 losses = 34.6% win % and 65% loss%

    Playoffs Record = 2 wins- 4 losses = 33.3% win % and 66.6% loss %

Overall records past 12 years = 44 wins and 83 losses

    Interesting stats on Gibbs Football:

20 of the 44 regular season wins were against Union Co(7), Claiborne Co(5), Rutledge(6), Jellico(2). In the past 12 years Gibbs has lost 5 games to Rutledge, 1 game to Union Co, 1 game to Jellico.

When and where are the glory years? Maybe the 1970's when they beat up on the little schools in the surrounding counties. One winning season in 12 years is not a good showing by any standards. A-E and Carter both made coaching changes a few years ago and both programs took off again. The so called glory years of football at Gibbs High School were in the days of sharing the region with the Horace Maynard, Rutledge, Powell Valley and Claiborne County schools.
