  1. Tiffany Buckalew transferred from Cleveland to Bradley here senior year in 2005. Sutton played at Bradley her whole career for Paul Cretton 1995-1998. (Around those dates give or take a year.)

  2. The Puma/GATA Sports National Classic turned into a Beech Bash.

Beech (Tenn.) topped Owensboro (Ky.) 6-4 in the tournament title game Thursday at Tate. Beech went 4-0 in the tournament.

Beech went ahead to stay with a pair of runs in the top of the second and gradually added to its lead.

The Tennessee squad went ahead 5-2 in the top of the fifth when a run scored after an error on a ball hit by Jeremy Rice. The run proved useful when Owensboro scored twice in the bottom of the inning to get within 5-4.

Nick Key's RBI-single in the top of the sixth brought in the game's final run.

Owensboro got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Brady Frey came on in relief and fanned three consecutive hitters to seal the win for Beech.

Beech is the first Tennessee team to win the tournament in the event's 14-year history.

BEECH (Tenn.) 6, OWENSBORO (Ky.) 4

  3. Coach Seals was at Soddy Daisy during the late 90's and early 2000's. He won a couple of district 6-AAA tournaments. I really don't have the hard numbers, but the teams were really competitive. During his tenure at Rhea County, he really didn't have much talent to work with...well except for Tiffany Travis. I wish him luck in 8 - AAA!

  4. Super 25 girls basketball rankings

Analysis by Christopher Lawlor, USA TODAY

Pick six: Six teams enter the Super 25 girls basketball rankings after a busy holiday schedule. No. 14 Stephenson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) forged its ranking by winning the Beach Ball Holiday Invitational in South Carolina. No. 18 Brea (Calif.) Olinda joins after capturing the Tournament of Champions Gray Division, and No. 21 Wichita Heights re-enters on a six-game winning streak.

Player of the week: Forward Maya Moore of No. 1 Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) played like the nation's top-rated player in recent games. Moore, a first-team All-USA selection in 2006, helped Collins rally from a 21-point deficit to post a 60-58 win vs. Mill Creek (Hoschton). Moore scored 13 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter and sank four free throws in the final 27 seconds to rally from a 58-56 deficit. Rushdan, who signed with Rutgers, scored 13 Monday in a 64-34 win vs. Archmere Academy (Wilmington), pushing her career total to 2,116 points. The state leader is Kristin Mills, formerly of Caravel Academy (Bear), with 2,118. Rushdan goes for the record Monday against Woodrow Wilson (Camden, N.J.) in Cherry Hill, N.J. She became the state's second player to surpass 2,000 points Dec. 22.

About the ranking: USA TODAY's Super 25 rankings are compiled by Christopher Lawlor, who consults with a national network of high school sportswriters, analysts and coaches. Among the criteria are a school's strength of schedule, the quality of competition in its state or league and the quality of its players. The next girls' ranking will be Jan. 10, 2007.

  6. What have you been watching! Cumberland and Cleveland are head and shoulders above the other two. Cleveland has a good inside game, Davis may be the best Soph. post in the state, but Cumb. guards are quick and can shoot it. I will go with CCHS in a close one, with both meeting for round 4 in the regional finals.

Bradley and McMinn are just along as a side show.

She has been watching this district for years! Anybody can win on any given night in District 5-AAA!

  7. Again, you have one strong dominate team, Cumberland County. The way the region tournament is set up, the first place team from District 6-AAA will play the fourth seeded team from District 5-AAA. Do you intentionally lose the 3rd place game in District 5-AAA to keep your team out of Cumberland County's bracket in the region tournament? District 6-AAA is really down with the loss of Brainerd to AA. I think Cumberland wins the district and region. The question is...who travels for the sub-state game with Region 4 as the runner-up from Region 3?

  8. Cumberland Co. Foster, Hood, Elmore, Smith

Cleveland - Isom, Wells, Simpson, Smith

    Bradley - Pickel, Johnson

    McMinn - Harris, Smith

    Walker Valley - Butler

    Rhea Co. - Travis, Hale

No MVP or Coach of the Year

There hasn't been a M.V.P. or Coach of the Year since 2001. That is the year that Breazeal (CCHS), Powell (CHS), and the Rhea county coach voted for Crystal Smith? (signed with Roane State) as M.V.P. over Tennessee signee Brittany Jackson. Jackson dropped 50 on Rhea the previous year. Amazing things happen in district 5-AAA!

  9. Do you consider the victory an "upset"? Either way, it took a great coaching job to get a win at Smiddy arena with or without Pickel. I'm just glad that she is doing good and ready to make a run at the state tournament!

    TynerRamFan:

Consequences to what??? Your not bothering me! I like to get those feathers ruffled!

  10. Any coach of the game knows that if you lose a player, you lose chemistry. In a sense, you could call it shell shock in knowing that your floor general is down. Can you explain the 26 point loss early in the year that Bradley put on Tyner? Sing your praises now because the only reason Tyner was added to the schedule is to produce a couple of easy wins for a coach that has had problems with producing W's because of a tough district. Tyner did get the win, but more importantly Pickel isn't going to miss any games. Tyner better worry about getting past the first round of region!

  11. Does anyone know the extent of her injury?

    From www.clevelandbanner.com

Editor's note: The Bradley Central Bearettes fell to Tyner on Saturday night, 53-45. The Bearettes leading scorer, Jackie Pickel, was injured early in the game and was undergoing oral surgery at press time. Complete coverage will be in Monday's edition of the Banner.
