  1. Thank you, glad y'all like it. We received some great insight from Coach Underwood (a veteran of the Sequatchie Valley) and we appreciate having him as a resource on our campus. All of the coaches at the respective programs collaborated as well, so I want to make sure credit is attributed to all who were involved in the process. We appreciate the opportunity to host this event in a special place in our country where the folks still appreciate and support the great sport of football.

  2. The only time the goal posts at Shanks Field at East Ridge High School have been torn down was the night R.C. Helton scored the winning touchdown for the Pioneers in a 10-6 upset of No.5 ranked Red Bank in Nov. 1982.

Three decades later, R.C. is not necessarily looking for the Whitwell High School football fans to tear down the goal posts on Friday nights, but does want the community and students to continue to be avid supporters of the football team.

Officially announced today as the Whitwell head football coach, Helton will put a smash mouth, run-the- football type offensive product on the field each week.

"We will run a Diamond T, multiple formation style offense and with nine starters returning on both sides of the ball we will have an experienced team for 2014," said Helton who was the power back in the talented East Ridge running game opposite Rodney Ballard in the early 1980s under coach Raymond James.

"Last year's team won its final four games and with a veteran group back for this fall we should be in good shape."

Helton replaces Billy Barnhart who was 7-23 for three years, including a 5-5 season this past fall.

Helton was the head coach at Trevor Browne High School in Phoenix, Ariz. the past three years, but has family in the greater Chattanooga area.

"I am excited  about this community which cares about its football program and the family type atmosphere here at Whitwell," Helton stated.

Spring Game - May 16  "I will be meet with every returning football player in a couple of weeks and am looking forward to the Red and White Spring Game on May 16."

    Looks great Coach!

  4. Negative and irrelevant are two different things.

That's funny Indian. Sequatchie hasn't been relevant since the days of Sid Fritts. Just maybe ex-Jasper coach can get you over the hump again. Until then Sequatchie is the land of should've, could've, and would've.

  5. WHS Parent Advisory Committee Meeting / Meet Coach Helton

WHS is having a dinner Saturday, March 15th at 5 p.m. in the cafeteria for the Parent Advisory Committee and to meet the new football coach.

The menu will consist of Lasagna and the cost will be $6 per plate.  Come out and hear what is happening at WHS and the plans for the future.

  6. If my old memory is correct, there used to be a good diner sorta off the beaten path over there. Had a chart board that had what was on the menu for the day as far as a meat and 3. Can't remember the name. I am not sure they had a sign out side.

Esie's at the bottom of Whitwell Mtn.

  7. Was told the other day it will be a coach that on last years staff, do not know the coaches name, but was told the kids like him a lot.

At this time I cannot confirm nor deny your statement.  However, I will say the interviews are going very well and the young men at Whitwell High School will be lead by a tremendous man with great character and integrity in the near future.

  8. in just curious do you guys not think this supplement thing isn't going to make front page and cause you guys even more embarrassment when it blows up. On top of that my family member teaches at your school and a great deal of teachers are asking could not that 20000 be put to a lot better use? Heck the bleachers at the middle school field has been condemned.

I have nothing to do with MC High School but I have some comments. What business is it to anyone if the people in Jasper want to give the coach extra money? No laws are being broken, no one is holding a gun to anyone's head, no taxpayer money is being used and you definitely will not even be asked to contribute one single penny. You are pissed cause this coach left sp last year and did not tell the kids he was leaving. Yes I agree he should have gotten them together and told them he was not going to be their coach. He probably would agree with you it was cowardly of him not to do so. That is water under the bridge. Get over it! You are upset that he left your school high and dry without a coach and the next year is going to be hired by the evil empire to the north. Again, get over it you got a quality coach and had a terrific season. Get in the weight room, get ready for spring practice, unlike MC and Coach Ross, and circle October 31, 2014 for the grand reunion. I am sick and tired of the whining that I read on this thread concerning this matter. Let MC deal with their problems and concerns and sp worry about theirs.
