  1. Okay, Bisonpride, I got ya. They say that for good reason about larger schools as I said above. However, having a greater population doesn't guarantee greater depth and talent, just increases the chances.

However, good coaching can take average talent and depth a long way to equalize the bigger schools. I think our region has several very good coaching staffs...Greenbrier, Station Camp, White House (oh that hurts to say that), Sycamore, and maybe Pearl Cohn...that can get the most out of their players and make them better than they "ought to be". That means there will be one very good team in our region left out of the playoff mix....and that will be a true shame. The #3 and 4 seed out of Region 3-3A will not be nearly as good as any of our top 5 (at least they haven't been the last couple of years). It is a shame that someone will miss out.

  2. Nice post Manny, but you continue to show WH arrogance. Aside from the title in 97, what has WH done compared to Alcoa? Alcoa has 4 State Titles since the turn of the century to include the last 3. They've also made three state semi-finals since 97...WH has only 2. That's a pretty good record, but it is not on the same level as Alcoa. If I'm not mistaken, the only team that has beaten them the last 3+ years is Maryville....and it was very close each time. WH has been a consistantly good/great program since Porter arrived, but they are not a "storied program" across the state...just in y'alls own mind.

Miracles do happen, but I just can't see WH going on a 3+ hour road trip and beating Alcoa at their place. I could see it happen if Alcoa overlooks WH, though. To a power house school in East Tennessee, WH (and their supposed "storied program") is not threatening. It will actually be a let down, like most opponents would be, after playing Maryville. Alcoa doesn't have to even bring their A game...they just need to bring their B game...but if they don't, then that might be a scenario where WH comes out with a win.

  3. baggy - not sure about the 5a enrollment, we are close, we have atleast 4a. Around 1000 students or more. I know the Junior and Senior Class is aboout 500. And those are the smaller classes combined.

But school pop. doesn't mean that much, we just might have more depth and/or talent. It comes down to who can make the least mistakes on Friday night, and make the most plays. (ie HHS vs. SCHS game)

Can't help but reply to this one, Bisonpride. If "school population doesn't mean that much," why do they even have classifications? Where in the heck do you think all that "depth" and "talent" comes from??? The larger your student body...the more likely you are to have talent/depth. Of course "make the least mistakes" and "make the most plays" is what wins games. But greater depth and talent goes a long way in making that happen.

That said, the official TSSAA student population for Station Camp last year was only 906 students which still keeps them in the 3A category, barely. That was the 201st most populated school and 202 is the last 3A school. There are other schools whose 2006 population would put them in 4A if they had grown 20% or more: Giles Co., Montgomery Central, Creek Wood, David Lipscomb, Fayette Ware, Sequoyah, Mitchell, Dyersburg, and Fulton. However, they remain in 3A for two more years.

  4. Tough game for the guys tonight, especially since they played so well. They just couldn't quite get it in the end zone as Lipscomb's D was proverbial...bent without breaking. Aside from the three big plays, I feel like Greenbrier outplayed Lipscomb, overall. There were a lot of hard hits (Bobcat D forced 3 or 4 fumbles) and outstanding pass coverage by both sides.

Regardless, this is without a doubt the best passing offense the Bobcats have had since I've lived here. The Offensive Line gave Grogan plenty of time as Lipscomb was unable to mount any real pressure. Justin made a lot of tough throws on the money and the receivers did a great job running their routes. Unfortunately, Lipscomb played well on their pass coverage. Justin also made some very wise decisions to tuck and run when he did, instead of trying to force the pass. Gotta love a QB who will run over linebackers!

And, kudos to the receivers who threw some great blocks on DE's and LB's in the running game.

Big Country, don't be deceived by game reports you get. The line play was a draw (if not in Greenbrier's favor) as Lipscomb couldn't mount any sustained drives tonight...just got what they needed on three big plays (one of them a KO return). Greenbrier's running game was much more consistant than Lipscomb's tonight. Lipscomb's overall defense was the real difference. It will carry them far!

Keep it up Bobcats and hold your head high. There were a lot of positives in this loss. I see some great things happening this season!

  5. Wow...what a difference a year makes. You could tell a big difference from last year's team just seeing them on the sidelines and the way they carried themselves last night. This group of seniors has obviously worked very hard in the off-season, appear much more confident, and play very much as a team. Great job last night Bobcats...especially in the fourth quarter when it counted most. Keep it going and take it to DL.

  6. hudsonj,

Coming from someone who made a royal behind of himself questioning the coaching decisions, I can say you are way off base (as I was then).

First, from what I saw in the first two games, they tried to open up the passing game and the team had very little success. Then, returning to the running game, they found success again on the offense.....racking up 30, 35, and 36 points in the next three games. A couple of those games didn't see a single pass. Then, after a couple of tough games, injuries to 2 or 3 key starters came into play. That probably had a major impact.

Second, passing can only work if the players can execute it. Without good blocking from the offensive line, the QB throws incompletions...interceptions...or takes sacks for huge losses.

Bottom line is that this staff has proven itself many times over and do not warrant second guessing. Last year's phenomenal season after losing a loaded senior class was proof of that. Coach Williams has proven in the past that if the players can execute it, he will call many pass plays. It would be foolish to call plays that would put your team in a bad position if you know they have a low probability of executing. No play calling will work without execution from the players. They must execute. And, to do that, they have to have worked hard in the off-season. From some of the posts on here....seems like the senior class didn't want it very badly....who knows?

Personally, I have come to have nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Williams. There is a lot more to his job than just calling plays, and he does an awesome job. Too many of us get caught up so much in the winning and losing that we tend to forget about what role this game of football really plays in the big picture of life. Some of life's greatest lessons can be learned when you are not successful. I know from personal experience that Coach Williams not only coaches these boys in football, but also in life. He has made several great play calls when it comes to that!

  7. congrats to livingston. you guys played with a lot of heart and you guys deserve that gold ball. i got a question though. HOW DID YOU GUYS LOSE 5 GAMES?. yall looked like one of the better teams i've seen all year.

If you go look, all of their losses were close ones (with the exception of Fulton) against very good competition. And, they play in arguably the best region in 3A. So, they were tested with fire and ready for the playoffs. Not hard to understand at all!

  8. Apparantly you have been to some different private D1 schools than I have.

#1 NFL coaches? First I've heard of it. The D1 privates in the Chattanooga area can barely afford two stipend coaches and the rest are volunteers. By the way, several public schools tha I know of have coaches who are not faculty members.

Ask the booster clubs of most successful programs (public or private) and you'll find that the income of the coaches is almost identical, with a slight advantage going to the public schools.

#2 What makes you think that there are no broken homes in private schools? The only thing that makes any real-world sense in this post is that private schools have more control over the discipline of the students. You are correct there.

#3 Agian, there is no way that you've seen the facilities at Boyd-Buchanan, Ezell-Harding, Grace, Temple or DCA for that matter. Vastly inferior to most, if not all public facilities. Shoot, even Notre Dame ( 3A, in Chattanooga) isn't anything to get excited about.

I stand by everything I've said here. Unfortunately you are standing in most of what you've said here.

I will say the privates with former NFL players as coaches are the D-II schools (MBA, BA, etc.). That is not the same with D-I privates.

That said, what world are you living in? You must not have seen many 1A public schools. Go to Adams, TN and take a look at what Jo Byrns has. They reflect the typical 1A program. I have seen the facilities at DCA. Same with Davidson Academny who just left D-I competition. Much better than your average public school, no matter the classification. They DEFINITELY have better facilities than public schools of their size!

I didn't say their are no broken homes in private schools. I just said much, much fewer. Most of the kids come from stable homes. The level of discipline and stability that are present at private schools is probably the number one advantage they have over public schools. That is a HUGE factor. You act as if it is no big deal. And, in addition to that, the ability of private school kids to go to camps and get private instruction is well above that of your typical public school child. Money makes a difference. Am I saying all private school players do that....NO. BUT, there are many more private school kids who get additional instruction in the off-season than public school kids. The whole situation is apples and oranges.

That said, I like the publics playing the privates with the multiplier in place. I like the idea of playing better competition. It can only make you better if you want to excel.

You can stand by what you have said. However, you can also remain to be ignorant!

  9. Please, can you tell me what real advantages (not PERCEIVED advantages) that private D1 schools have that do not also apply to magnets and open zones? Not whining-just answering devils' question.

    Yes I can.

REAL ADVANTAGE #1: Coaches. Privates schools don't have to have coaches who are teachers. This gives them a much larger pool from which to choose from to be their coaches. How many public schools have former NFL players beating down the door to coach??? But, there are several private schools who have former NFL and college players coaching them. At some (not all) private schools, the head coach has no other job. He can spend an inordinate amount of time preparing a game plan/reviewing film that a public school coach cannot do.

REAL ADVANTAGE #2: Environment. Coaches at privates schools get a pool of atheletes that come mostly from good, solid homes and very, very few off the field problems. Discipline is not hard to establish at private schools as you must have it to even attend the school (and stay there). Public schools deal with so many broken homes, undisciplined players, etc. The coaches have to spend a lot of time establishing discipline with students who don't live that way. Discipline and fundamentals are so very important in high school football.

REAL ADVANTAGE #3: Equipment and facilities. The supporters (parents and alumni) of private schools funnel lots of money into their athletics programs. This provides state of the art equipment and facilities for many of these private schools. Public schools are constantly struggling for money. Don't need to say much more about that as we are all taxpayers!

Those are the three biggest REAL ADVANTAGES. They are not perceived.

  10. Carnac says: "I see this thread being moved over to the Public/Private debate in the near future"

Do you really want to know what folks think about this? Ok...

I think it is a very manipulative and subjective way to organize classes. I thought so last year and I'll continue to think so until the complaints are dealt with fairly across the board. The advantages of magnet and open zone schools are not addressed at all within this system. I've watched as upperclassmen statewide have struggled this year to step up to another level (some during a rebuilding year) wondering aloud what their school did "wrong" to be placed in this situation. I do think that they have learned that life, indeed, isn't fair and that you do the best you can with the hand you've been dealt.

If that lesson has been learned then they are all champions in my book. It is, after all, what we want for our young men and women- to learn life lessons from sports.

The only thing that I see as a positive is that the whining has subsided for a year, but that's just me.

Please tell me of a magnet school that dominates in football? The magnet school is academically based, period.

The privates do have advantages that the publics don't have. The multiplier does even out those disadvantages. It is not unfair. So, YOU need to stop all of YOUR whining!!!

  11. the refs gave ND the win they had so many bad calls that cost white house the victory

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh! :lol::lol::lol:

Just curious.....do you guys get a trophy for the case because you made it to the state quarterfinals? Hmmmmmmmm?! So....to recap.....one team's victory earned a championship.....another team's victory earned a long busride home! Can't wait 'til Week 10 next year!

  12. I may not like White House, but bringing down Ricky Ladd definitely takes more than one hand. He is a very impressive runner who can not only fake you out of your jock, he can lower his head and get the extra 2 - 3 yards. If you only put one hand on him, you won't bring him down.

And, who cares if he is getting 93% of the offense.....everybody knew you had to shut him down to win and few have done it (he had early season injuries). Make no mistake, it was Ricky Ladd (who Greenbrier knew they had to stop on the final drive) who won the game for White House. Trying to shut him down is much easier said than done.

I was very impressed with Ladd's performance and hope he has success at the next level.

  13. Once again.....failure to know the FACTS before they post......THE White Hose Men's Club!

In the 6 years I have been in Greenbrier, we have YET to have a single team reach the 40 player limit. That means not a SINGLE player has been turned away. As a matter of fact, the first year we were in the league when my son was six, we got in late as newcomers to the area 2 weeks after their season had begun.

That is part of the HATE that exists in then so-called Men's Club based on eroneous information. They make up their facts to suit their own biased complaints. You guys know nothing about the Greenbrier program. It is quality run top to bottom......you will make up any story you can to explain why you can't beat us.

I could tell you all day the false stories told about Greenbrier, but I won't. Keep living your world of hatred for Greenbrier.....and maybe one day you will see the light realize your shortcomings are due to your own ineptitudes!

p.s. not going anywhere! My son will graduate from Greenbrier HS as did his older brother (part of that phenomenal senior class)!

  14. Greenbriar couldnt beat our Jr Pro program this year either.Greenbriar couldnt beat our Freshman team and lost to our middle School team in a preseason scrimage.Think this is why he is bitter.Shouldn't the Mens Club try to beat every team that they play?As far as the reference to the KKK that is the most childish post I have ever seen.Catfish has never said anything that stupid, and thats saying alot.Hate us all you want. You cant love what you cant beat, and we have bragging rights until next October.

Also I would much rather have a sign that says STATE QUARTER FINALS than Region Champs and I think your players and coaches would say the same.

Only for the record, Greenbrier took 2 of 3 games from White House East this year in Jr. Pro. My son's team (11-12) won their game. I am only bitter about the high school game!

Titans, your post is typical of the Men's Club.....distorting the facts. As a matter of fact, my son's team has only lost to White House East twice out of 7 games! And, they have never lost to WH West....but of course....they are your red-headed stepchild....aren't they?! :)

Y'all want to talk about classless.....in last year's superbowl between Greenbrier and White House East, we were at Cheatham Co. HS where both sets of fans have to sit on the same side. Every time WH did something good......their fans didn't just cheer.....they turned to the Greenbrier fans and were yelling at US! Talk about bush league and classless.....parents acting like that over little league football......now THEY should be ashamed of themselves!

So, maybe I should be a bigger man than this.....but that is just one of many incidents that I have faced the last 6 years.

  15. And a question......And I only ask because I don't know any or never been a member..... (of the mens club OR the KKK) But how do you know our Mens club is 2nd only to the KKK in regards to hate????? Just what else were you involved in SC?????? Sounds as if you speak from personal experience but, again, as I did earlier with another fan, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and allow you to explain yourself.....

But if my assumption is correct, it would explain your hate......

Yep....I do have first hand experience with the KKK and racism.....I was disgusted by its presence in my area. I even wrote a letter to the editor of our local paper (small town like Greenbrier) blasting it. That is how I know about it. Talk about ignorance at its finest!

And, I have seen it to be just as bad here in Robertson County. That is the one negative I have come to find (but, that doesn't mean it is representative of the whole county.....just like I am not representative of all of Greenbrier). Heck, I had a black man as a groomsman in my wedding (with photos to prove it).....AND, I chose to accept a teaching position in minority-filled Metro when I could have had a job here in Robertson Co. I love working with those children every day! So, don't even try to go down that road with me!

And, is the Men's Club the 2d most hate-filled group? I don't know......do you understand "making or emphasizing a point"?

Dandy, I know you think you are intelligent and can out debate anyone.....but, trust me, you will never get the better of me in that area! :):):) You constantly use flawed logic just as you did in trying to infer my knowledge of the KKK must have come from being a part of it. How shallow of you in trying to be slanderous ..... and far from being logical.

  16. Nope....please notice this is still the "Round 2 - Greenbrier vs. White House" thread. So, you aren't on here talking about your next game.....we're still talking about last night.

Don't worry.....I won't clog your thread with Notre Dame. Don't have much to say about that other than what I already said.

By the way.....this is how I like it! So, the more you "keep it going"....the more I LOVE IT!

  17. You know something Fatkitty you might want to find another team to root for because it will be along time before they win another. Maybe 23 years or so. I don't think your heart can take all the stress.

Oh yeah....now that was a VERY CLASSY post! I love the hypocrisy! Another reason to keep on with the serious distaste for White House!

  18. I can at least respect that you have finally came out with your true feelings..... You hate us.... I can live with that, but I don't believe, I'll go re- read posts, that we accused your side of denegrating our team....

When you operate in the realm of hate, as you now claim, reason takes a back seat..... Because it is reasonable to accept that our neighbors would root for the home county team..... or at least have enough "class" to keep it to yourself.....

But I wouldn't call you rooting for ND classless....... I would call it classless to post it here, but I would call it bitterness, rooted in your hate.....

One day, when you are thinking straight, maybe you will understand the difference......

Never claimed to be using reason. Reason would say not to act in the manner I am. However, the disgust I have come to develop for the people from White House has overruled my sense of reason.

Sadly enough, most of it comes from the Jr. Football folks in White House. They are some of the most classless people I have ever met. Talk about hatred.....those guys scheme every year to try to beat Greenbrier's teams as if their life depended on it. My gosh.....it is just little league.

That so called "Men's Club" y'all have is the most hate filled group I have come across outside the KKK. They're so bad, we had parents from there calling calling me about having their kid play in the Greenbrier program because of all the shenanigans. So, I'd say to clean your own house before you chide me for my lack of reason.

That said, there is a major flaw in your logic. Why is it "reasonable to accept that our neighbors would root for the home county team..... or at least have enough "class" to keep it to yourself....."? First, due to the arrogance of the Sumner County folks, WHHS no longer represents Robertson County. So, you are not a home county team. You are no different than Station Camp, Portland, Beech, etc. The fact that the counties split schools gives Greenbrier all that much more reason to hate White House!

Second, I am not from Tennessee. Where I grew up in South Carolina, you rooted for two teams each week.....your school and those who were playing against your archrival. That was a fact of life. Believe it or not....there is life outside of Middle Tennessee....not everyone believes what you believe. I guess that is why I get so sick of the supposed "love fest" on here between Greenbrier and White House.

And, of course I am bitter. Anytime you lose to your archrival you SHOULD be bitter. I'm sorry. I grew up in a different mentality than that. Not much of an archrival if you only dislike them one game a year. Heck.....that is how I feel about most other teams.....but my archrival.....I am going to root against them 365 days a year!

So, go ahead Dandy......continue your love fest. I'll continue to operate without reason and have a very strong dislike for my archrival!

  19. You guys from White House have a distorted view of what "class" is. Nobody on here denegrated your team. They went out and earned the W. I stated as such. I have a ton of respect for the White House football team. Part of why you dislike your rival is because they are good. So, kudos for the job they did.

HOWEVER, that does not mean I have to pull for you to win next week just because we are "neighbors". With "neighbors" like you, who needs enemies! And, we have to root for somebody in next week's game. So, the fact I choose to root for Notre Dame instead of White House......that makes me "classless".

Is it any different when rooting for college teams. Most UT fans love to root against Alabama and Florida, etc. And, if Vanderbilt were consistantly good, they would root against Vandy, also. So, don't throw around your Holier Than Thou attitude on me! I don't like White House and will almost always root against them! I don't cuss 'em. I just don't like ya!

    At least I am honest.
