1. If that's the case, that could be a great help for him. I know from experience that if you've got the physical tolls they are looking for, they will teach you to play the position. One of the hardest things for a kid is coming into the unknown world of college life [which is a huge adjustment anyway] & then having your coach tell you he is going to move you to a new position that you have never played before can freak you out. Mentally it can be a huge adjustment. Hope Kevin gets a chance.

That may be true but Kevin Smithson could play a number of positions.

The kid is like 6'3, 240 and is strong as an ox.

  2. There is something everyone on this board needs to realize. What a D1 college coach looks for in a player has almost nothing to do with a kid's stats or accolades as a HS player. Most of the time they want players to be a "blank slate" when they come in, cause they are going to teach you their way of playing whatever position they decide to put you in.

How in the world does Cody Romans get a scholarship at UTC?

He wasn't even the best QB in the city.

I was going back over some stats from last season and here are the top QB's in Chattanooga as of the first of November, 2005:

    1) Kevin Smithson (Temple) 165-305 for 2,910 yards

    2) B.J. Coleman (McCallie) 119-206 for 1,917 yards

    3) Caleb Wilson (Rhea Co.) 115-209 for 1,906 yards

    4) Zack Woods (Ooltewah) 84-138 for 1,450 yards

    5) Bradford Turner (East Ridge) 69-123 for 1,360 yards

    6) Curt Bureau (Sequatchie County) 89-177 for 1,123 yards

I'm not sure which of these guys are Seniors (except for Smithson).

How does he not get any consideration from the Mocs?

He had almost 3,000 yards passing in 2005 and in 2004 he had 2,702.

He made All-State in both seasons.

Yes. I know he plays for little Temple, but the kid is a good QB.

    Somebody is missing' out.

  3. Brent Hayes was the most overrated LB i've ever played against. Ask anybody that played against him last season. They guy could've been great, but he always had someone or something to blame for his misfortune. He didn't play hard because he thought his coaches stunk. This time last year ya'll predicted him to go to UT, tack another letter onto that, and thats where he went.

Where did you come up with this garbage? Do you know Brent or have you ever even talked to him? What misfortune did he have that he blamed on anyone? I know he loved his coaches & will always have a good relationship with them. You are entitled to think he was not a good player but for you to get on here & say he blamed others for anything & question his effort when you've probably never even talked to the young man at any length if at all says a whole lot more about your lack of integrity than it does about Brent Hayes.

  4. Ooltewah[/url'> "whoo whoo"' date='Oct 22 2004 - 01:09 PM']BRENT HAYES IS A TERRIFIC PLAYER, BUT DOES NOT HAVE THE SPEED FOR A DI LINEBACKER

You guys kill me! What D-1 school do you coach & recruit for??? You wouldn't know what they look for in a D-1 recruit if it bit you in the butt! I could care less about your opinions, [they're like armpits, everyone's got 'em & most all of 'em stink], but to state junk like this like it's fact amazes me. Give the guy some credit. He's played well enough to have some schools very interested in him as a MLB. You know, some Owl players will be recruited over the next couple of years & I hope all Pounder fans on here will applaud them & hope they can go as far as their dreams can take them & I for one will never get on here & bash them in any way. I hope any of our area kids will know I want to see them play at the next level. I'll pull for them every step of the way. But I get so sick of Owl fans [who probably have never played beyond the HS level] slinging dung about whether Brent is good enough, in their very limited knowledge, to play college football or that he's overrated. You know, that's all I've seen from Tyner fans as well. By the way, I went to see Demonte play in the playoff game against David Lipscomb & The KY-TN AllStar Game & frankly, he didn't play very well in either, but I sure wouldn't get on here & rag on him when I've seen him in only 2 games of a great HS career. I know Demonte & think he's a great kid & want him to get to Knoxville & become the great player I think he can become & I wish you people could encourage Brent to do the same, but i seriously doubt you have it in you.

  5. Imaowl just because your from Ooltewah doesn't mean you have to disrespect one of Central's players. How many times have you timed Brent Hayes in the 40 that you know how fast he runs it? Also, how can you say that he won't play linebacker for a D1 school? Oh wait, maybe UT, Marshall, Missouri, and Nebraska will agree with you. Probably not.

    825392429

    Irish,

Every time Hayes is mentioned in any thread, Imaowl has some smack against him. I sure don't understand the burr he's got in his butt, but I know Brent, he's a humble & respectful young man who's never said or done anything to this guy to deserve disrespect. Nobody on here knows what Brent went thru last year to get back on the field this season & play at the level he has played. Many guys would have hung it up. Brent will be an asset to whatever program he goes to at whatever position he plays, cause he has those intangibles that come from something called "HEART'.

  6. How can a team with 3 or 4 division 1 prospects do so bad? Coaching?

    825392071

Didn't ask you that. I asked you when have you timed him & what school do you rate talent & potential for. As for your question, 3 or 4 Players cannot play all 22 positions on the field. Inexperience at critical positions can make for some tough nights.

  7. I am a pounder fan, don't get me wrong. i live in the community. I know the pressure of playing a qb at a much higher level than you kids could dream about. I played in Atlanta at a school called southwest dekalb. Then i went on to play at Georgia Tech for four years as a wideout. So, trust me, i know the game. I also coached for five years and was an offensive coordinator for two. #4 is a good leader and posseses the talent to be a good qb, but after he had a good showing against ooltewah, it's been the me show and not the offensive arsenal that central is capable of putting up. #8 had a good showing friday night, and he looked more natural back there, moving around in the pocket hitting wide open receivers. Nothing frustrates an offensive coach or even a good qb than to find a wide open receiver and have the ball dropped, as nothing frustrates a wide receiver to be wide open and not get the ball.

Defensively, the kids took some bad angles and missed some tackles, that happens. But also, there was a definite weakness up the middle when you keep blitzing your linebackers from the outside, and Rhea county gets a center and a fullback on your middle linebacker, and no one else is there until you've gained 10 yards. As an offensive coordinator, what the defense was doing by alignment, is a dream.

When you guys realize it's "central purple pounders" that take the field, and not me or I, you can write your own ticket. i hope you find it, and hopefully it's not too late. Everyone that is around the program or comes to a game sees that. Guys talking trash to the visiting crowd instead of concentrating on the game. You can hear in the stands the profanity used on the field. Sometimes you get frustrated but if it's that loud, you have a problem. You should be kicked out. Run the play, get up, get back in the huddle, call the play and do it again. Not one of you has done anything so amazing that you have room to talk. We're talking trash with a 2-6 record. Who's listening?

    825390398

    Guru,

Great Post! This team has all it takes when the attitude becomes "my team", not "me". I hate hearing some of the kids, after a loss, talking & high-fivin' about a big play they made. When you lose, there are no big plays except the ones you allowed your opponent to beat you with.

  8. I'm sorry but there is no way Brent can run a 4.7 40... He is 4.9 on a good day! He is a good linebacker though. He won't be linebacker in college. Maybe fullback or d-line!

    825391536

Man, what is your problem. have you timed him? he ran a 4.85 in july at Alabama & tripped on the start. That was the first day doctors allowed him to run full speed since his surgery. He's being looked at by a number of prominent schools as a LB. Guess they need to check with you before they go any further.

  9. Who fears him?  Central is 1-6... I wouldn't say too many people fear him!!!

    825369179

You'd fear him if you were man enough to lace on some cleats & go head to head with him. He can't play 11 positions on the defense, but he does one heck of a job at his position.

  10. Good post, blueraider. It was a great game. Both defenses were very tough, making numerous big plays, but what a finish! I hope this win will really show the Pounders what they can accomplish when they come together. I think we can make it tough on some region foes the rest of the way. Best of luck to Cleveland from here on out.

  11. Something big is going to have to happen at Central for them to have much of a chance to win another game this season. I know the players have lost confidence in the playcalling & the lack of discipline is evident. It hurts to see it happen. There are 4 or 5 seniors on this team who want to win so badly & have worked so hard & care so much but it takes alot more than 4 or 5 to make a team. The attitude of alot of Central's players reminds me too much of the 0-10 team 3 yrs. ago. It doesn't hurt to lose. Right after a loss, they're laughing & talking about where they can party. I know those seniors & captains are ready to clean house & find the guys that want to win. They would rather have 11 players play both ways that care than be 3 deep at every position.

  12. I think Jones ran the score up on the Owls last year.  I think there will be a message sent this year.  I like Ooltewah by a Bunch.

    825331949

What? I don't think that pulling the first team out with 9:00 to play was running up the score. They had 56 at the end of the 3rd qtr. What was he supposed to do, put the JV in after halftime?

BUT, on to Friday's game. Central can make this a contest only if they can eliminate the mental errors they've been making up to this point. I think they came out of the 2nd half last week feeling they can address those. But, if they continue to have 5 TO's & 10+ penalties, the owls could cruise.

  13. Why does their offense struggle so much? Is it inexperience? or coaching/playcalling? What is it? They have the athletes, and that quarterback seems to be decent enough not to lose a game for them. Maybe they'll grow as the season goes along. Good test this week though.

    825320666

I think you could say all of the above. Inexperience at the skill positions definitely shows, i.e., averaging 5 turnovers/ game. Also, I fail to understand the romance with the shotgun formation spread offense. If we were running the West coast O & throwing 30-35 times a game, I could see it, but 3 out of 4 plays from it will be an inside handoff & any pass out of it will be a fly pattern. Way too predictable. I think they will mature & start to iron out the mistakes. Our biggest problems have been way too many turnovers & way too many penalties.

  14. Well I don't exactly know that much about Warren County except that they have lost 5 strait. Central is coming off the huge season opening loss to Notre Dame. I think that Chattanooga Central will bounce back against a weaker team this weak though. Central really needs to work on stopping the run. As well do they need to work with there passing game. I don't think they will need these to beat Warren County but they will need them on down the road.

Insider, they did stop the run. The defense allowed 98 yds. total offense. Simple fact is, they have to stop turnovers & penalties. If you don't give the other team the ball, you don't get beat when your defense allows 98 yds.

  15. We did look like all talk. The o-line, which I thought would be a real strong point on this team, blocked no one. We showed no run game, Hixson was in the backfield when the handoff was made. On defense, Central never contained on the option & overpursued leaving the cutback wide open & Swofford & co. made them pay. We've got a lot of work to do. Good job, Hixson, you came out with some fire & made a statement.

  16. I don't want to leave out Curt Jones at Chatt. Central. Took over at a school that hadn't had 2 winning seasons in probably 20 years. Had an 0-10 season in 2001. Took the team to a 5-6 mark in 2002 with a playoff appearance. Then went 8-4 in 2003 despite some critical injuries, won Central's 1st playoff win in forever before falling to Maryville in the 2nd round in an excellent game. I expect better this year.

  17. Lol. Didn't central lose most of their offensive firepower as well?

Central didn't lose many on offense, but the ones they lost were big [Despaux, Davenport, Geter]. They have some real talent moving up in those positions. Looked good in spring, but unproven in game experience. Defense will be extremely tough with 10 of 11 starters returning & healthy. Nobody will have an easy time moving the ball on this group.

  18. Ela, I think you're right. There is definitely no lock for region champ this year. I'm sure for looking for Central to win it, cause they're my team. But they do have some big holes to fill. They have some good young talent at QB & RB, but they are unproven, so it may take a few games for them to settle in. Hopefully having a few non-region games early will let them get some confidence for a tough region schedule.
