  1. Guess I will weigh in on the discussion as well.

Regardless whether you support Huntingdon football or not, there is NOTHING wrong with saying that the game against Westview was one of the worst offensive showings by any football team. How can you explain fumble after fumble with no one even touching them? It is either execution or mental lapse. Granted the coaches are not out on the field making the fumbles but they have control of preparation and who is on the field.

Someone posted earlier that all but 2 of the fumbles were caused by the center. I disagree. I won't give the center a pass, but the qb played a big part in it as well. Don't remember ever seeing the ball fumbled in so many different ways with no hits involved.

As far as "Swenson's" offense, has no one noticed that it is not the same offense that has been run for years? All of those records mentioned were NOT completed while running this offense. They are similar yes, but not the same.

Currently, Huntingdon is struggling with talent. We don't have the numbers or the athletic ability on the field we have had in years past. The bright spot of that is we should get better each week of the season. The one thing that I want to see if for Huntingdon to get more physical. In years past, regardless of how talented we were you could bank on getting hit in the mouth when you stepped on the field against the Mustangs. We just don't have that mindset at this point.

Right now, we need to improve in all aspects. Players need to get better, coaches need to get better, and fans need to get better!!!!

    GO STANGS!!

  2. What you say is true stangfan. Fatigue could be a problem for most teams in our area who are accustomed to playing only half the game. What I mean by that is having a defnsive squad and an offensive squad. Who are not playing both ways.. These boys from UC have known for months that they would haVE TO GO ALL NIGHT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. They have conditioned themselves for extended play.

I know what your trying to say, but it doesn't hold up. One of the things that the UC coach said after the jamboree against Mckenzie was that conditioning was one of the problems. You don't fix that in 3 weeks time.

All any good back needs is one good step to get past a defender. I still believe that if UC is playing most of the secondary both ways the POSSIBILITY of big plays increases as the game goes on. I have not said that UC will roll over because of getting tired. Since Holder only plays on offense, he will still have strong legs under him at the end of the game. Advantage Huntingdon.

UC has a very good defense and IF they can take Huntingdon out of their game plan the advantage goes to them. I am also very interested in seeing how our defense plays against the UC offense. Our defense has done a pretty good job against the run all year but has struggled against the pass. I know UC can throw the ball, but can they consistently enough to sustain drives?

  3. Mr. Mustang, I was wondering when you was going to jump in the mix. LOL I agree with you completely. This is going to be a tough game, especially with it being played at UC.

Out of all the Huntingdon fans, there is probably no one that wants to beat UC more than I do. I feel about UC the way most folks from Huntingdon feel about Mckenzie. :thumb:

  4. These type games always comes down to the final 4th quarter. Union City doesn't have 70 players...maybe 40.

You only play 11 guys on the field at one time...that rule since the day of time.

Conditioning, now one will out conditon Union City....we have played to date counting our 3 hour scrimages....5 games. All which we have played decent in.

I will say this til games time, if it comes down to special teams, Union City may have that upper hand.

The passing game is in suspect. We can throw but can we defend. No matter what, games like these are what the kids practice for all summer long. May the better team win.

Yeah there are only 11 playing at one time but when your playing against a different group everytime possession changes your at a disadvantage. This is not a game that decent conditioning is going to work if UC is trying to have guys go both ways.

I will give UC a definate advantage in special teams, and it is a huge advantage.

As fas as the passing game goes, you better hope to see Huntingdon's passing game Friday night. If not, the running game is not being slowed down.

UC is very capable of winning this ball game if Huntingdon gets careless with the ball as we have done on occassion. However, without any turnovers I see this a 2+ td victory for Huntingdon.

  5. Ther is no one in West Tn can get any respect. IMP let me say i hope this does not affend any one. Before any team in West Tn gets any respect they will have to earn it. West Tn can send the best they have to play in a state championship and come bad home with the silver ball. I know you proud to be there but people you are kidding yourself it you claim to be happy with that silver ball. In the past West Tn has done well on occassions. But till West Tn does it on a steady basic the respect won't come. I know it can't be done ever year. Until West Tn can bring back some gold the respect will not come! Noboby wants to finish second i don't care what people say! I hope i didn't offend anyone! I would like to see West TN do it but till then its the same old story! Good Luck to all ! :thumb:

No offense, but using your same logic outside of a handful of teams in middle and east tn no one on that side of the state deserves any respect either. If only the team that brings home the gold ball is deserving of respect then everyone else doesn't regardless of what part of the state they are in.

It is very easy to look and see who wins a state championship and make a blanket statement that the best football is played in that part of the state. I have seen west tn teams win state championships and I have seen west tn teams get blowed off the field in the championship game. I have also seen middle and east tn teams get trounced in the finals too.

I agree respect is earned on the field, but it is not just from winning. Milan and Huntingdon(for example) respect each others program regardless of who wins or by how much. Both towns know that it doesn't matter who has the better team that year, it matters who has a better team that night.

High school football is alive and well in Tennessee throughout the state. No one should ever take an AP poll, fan poll, barbershop poll, or exit poll after a game as anything more than someone elses opinion. Opinions are like something else, everyone has one!!

  6. Definately looking forward to this one.

There is no doubt that Huntingdon has played better competition up to this point. Union City's offense looked good Friday night, but I don't think they will be able to control the line of scrimmage against Huntingdon as they did against Trenton.

This one could become a high scoring game if Huntingdon continues to have lapses on defense. UC qb is good and can burn Huntingdon if given time to pass.

One thing that could really factor in by the end of the game is fatigue. UC plays a lot of players both ways. If they try to chase Holder and Thompson down all night and play defense, I would expect some bigs plays to happen late.

  7. Considering the turnovers led to 10 Milan points and the final margin was 4 points, pretty safe to say the turnovers were one of the BIGGEST factors in the outcome of the game. Add to that, one of the turnovers was inside the Milan 10 which although not a guaranteed score the likelihood was pretty good.

It was not the call I would have made in that situation. However, I will also admit that I gave Huntingdon very little chance of pulling out a win against Milan. The job the coaching staff did in getting the team ready to play and the overall gameplan was excellent.

If your smart enough to know what call to make everytime, you need to start coaching. Just think about the fact that the execution of the play wasn't pefect either. Holder could have pulled the ball down and ran with it. Thompson could have broken the interception up.

Regardless, this is not the place to be calling out players or coaches. It is amazing that a game played and coached so well, you would pick out one play to comment on.

It was a great game. Congratulate the players, coaches, and fans(well all but the one that blew the air horn) on their efforts and an amazing atmosphere for high school football.

  8. The Thompson kid does play defense. he is the starting saftey.

Really? That makes me go hmmm. I did not notice him on the field for Defense until the 4th quarter. What about Holder?

Actually Thompson is the starting weak side outside lb in a 4-4 defense. He was on the field most of the game on defense.

Holder does not play on defense.

  9. Congrats on a good game.

Milan had just enough players out and banged up to equalize the playing field. Yet another outstanding game to add to the history books.

Good luck the rest of the season. I am really gonna miss not having the opportunity to get even during the playoffs.

  10. this game came down to a poor coaching play. You have a great running back who can catch and a very decent QB and you throw a hb pass. That shows a lack of confidence in your playmakers. Also a weak effort by the dline in the 4th. Swenson really needs to evaluate his talent and get some confidence in his players bc that was terrible. Good job to the guys they played as well as they could and almost pulled out the upset...could have if not for coaching....

I will agree that I would have called a different play than the one Coach Swenson called. However, if the play would have worked everyone(including myself) would have been talking about how great a call it was and caught the defense offguard.

Yes, Huntingdon could have won the game but didn't. The difference in the game was the 3 turnovers at the end of the 2nd quarter. Unless I missed something, Coach Swenson was not on the field during those plays.

Get ready single A, Huntingdon is for real!!!!!

  11. Either UC or Huntingdon should be playing for the 1A championship every year that they play at thier size. If they dont, then the season wasnt what it should be.

BTW, Greenfield plays Humboldt, Trenton, Union City, and Dresden in the regular season. They are all much larger schools.

There is one VERY big difference between Greenfield's and Huntingdon's schedule though. All of the games you just mentioned are required due to district obligations with the exception of one. Dresden was an optional game and I believe they were 0-10 last year.

Huntingdon's optional games are: Westview, Milan, Camden, Union City, and Dyer County.

I understand completely the argument of wanting to play schools that are the same size, but it is not going to happen. There are just not that many schools the size of Greenfield, Gleason, etc. There is always the option of consolidating with Westview, for example, if size is what your concerned with or giving up football all together.

Your point is well taken on wanting to level the playing field. Huntingdon played for years as the small school in a bigger division and had some pretty good success. We have cycled through some years where the talent has not been as good and the record showed accordingly. However, the opponents we scheduled were still the big kids on the block.

Instead of trying to bring the competition down to where your at, raise your level of play and go after them. Trust me, the games are a lot more fun when you beat those "larger" schools. Granted there are often times a lot of bumps and bruises that come with playing those games.

Milan has the overall edge in the series with Huntingdon but it has made for some of the best high school games I have seen. We look forward to playing them even if we know the odds are not good because luckily the number of students does not put any points on the board.

  12. Guess everyone could elect to play in 6A and then TSSAA wouldn't have to decide how to divide everyone up.

I know the current system has flaws but there is no way for everyone to be happy.

There have been a few years recently that if Huntingdon was already in A they would have won a state championship. We played for years just being a few(less than 10) students over the breaking point to be in A. Huntingdon has lined up and played against em all. Milan does the same thing each year.

    Now back to the game.

There is no doubt that on paper Milan has the better team going into tonight. Huntingdon can gain a lot from this game regardless of what the scoreboards says at the end of the night. With that said, I also believe with good play on our part and maybe a break or two, Huntingdon can win this ballgame. My biggest concern is still the same as it was before playing Westview - our defense. We are subject to giving up too many big plays currently.

Look forward to a great game tonight.

    See you there!!

  13. I have enjoyed the exchanges between Huntingdon and TCA fans. There is nothing like this time of year and the way fans get behind their respective teams.

With that said, I will give my thoughts on the scrimmage. I honestly believe that without the turnovers Huntingdon is a better team than TCA. However, I have seen many "better" teams get beat because of turnovers. Turnovers are very much a part of the game and for the scrimmage, Huntingdon was beat because of it.

TCA has an impressive qb and some talented recievers. The run game had limited success other than some designed roll outs.

After watching Huntingdon's two scrimmages, I feel that our run defense looks pretty good but our pass defense has a ways to go. Offensively, things are coming together. We eliminate the turnovers and we are playing ball control football.

  14. It still amazes me for a school the size of Huntingdon we will have 60+ kids out for football every year. I dare say there are not many if any schools that will have that kind of participation. That is just one of the things that makes Mustang football very special.

The schedule that Swenson has put together for next year may very well be a test in survival. If we can get through the regular season without many injuries, we will be more than prepared for the playoffs regardless of what our overall record is.

  15. Not sure if overrated is the right word or not, but I believe Milan fans will agree that this team is no where close to the teams of 98,99, or 03. I am not trying to take anything away from a very good Milan team. Honestly, I hope they can make it to Murfreesboro and win it all.

Right now the level of football in West Tn is not where it was a few years ago.

  16. Only the first two rounds go by seeding. After that the home team is determined by the bracket.

The winner of Huntingdon and JCS host the next game. The winner of that will host the winner out of the Lewis Co. side of the bracket.

Yeah, I thought the same thing until reading the playoff info listed.

Here is the info from TSSAA.

In Class 2A, the higher seeded team shall be the host school. If the two schools are the same seed, in odd-numbered years the top team in each bracket shall be the host team. In even-numbered years the bottom team in each bracket shall be the host team.

  17. You're right..He is probably looking at the brackets which does say at Huntington but if two teams are in the same region...the top seeded team will play a home no matter what the bracket says.!

Huntingdon and Milan are not in the same Region.

After reading the playoff info, I think ya'll are right. Not sure why they would publish the bracket showing home field though.
