it really seems like basketball is out of control with football a close second. when softball is being played the gym ought to be closed and no basketball going on. let the kids be kids and have a life. if they chose to go and shoot so be it but these so called "mandatory" voluntarly practices need to be done away with
I think basketball was the 1st "out of control sport". The rise of AAU basketball really led to that. I also think Baseball, Softball, volleyball and soccer are all nearly, if not totally, out of control now. I agree with the question when is softball "season". When is baseball, volleyball and soccer "season" as well? I know some kids love one sport and want to play it year round, but I also think that it is a shame that kids have to make a decison about what "one" sport they want to play at such an early age. If we want the popularity of our sport (whatever that sport is) to grow shouldn't we encourage more participation instead of saying that if you are not comitted solely to one sport then you should not be playing. By essentially forcing a small number of kids to focus on one sport are we ultimately limiting the number of people who will follow it and support it. I do not doubt that we are improving the caliber of play but will a kid (and her family) that focused exclusively on soccer for instance ever really care about softball, volleyball, etc.? I by no means claim to know all the answers but I do think our focus can get to be too narrow at times and that could very well have a negative effect.
Also I am not sure that football is not actually the most most "in control" sport that is left. No AAU football, no travel football, no football exposure tournaments. 10 days of spring football and the regular season with some pretty strict limitations on off season practices. Yes it does take a tremendous comittment in terms of weights and conditioning but the bounaries of the actually season are pretty well defined. I know of alot of football coaches that open weight rooms early in the morning and a various times throughout the summer so kids can continue to lift and still play their other sports. I also know that there are some "out of control" football guys as well (just as there are out of control coaches in other sports).
Just my humble opinion which I hope no one finds too offensive. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Let me tell you this, and friends...I have experience in all of this. Not professionally but with life itself. Some good and some bad.
Here is the bottom line from my view-point having a daughter in high school who plays more than one sport yet going to college to play softball.
Let them play until they come up with the conclusion "on their own" that it is time for them to concentrate on the one sport they are going to play in college. Do not let another coach get in the way and do not let a travel coach get in the way. If the travel coach limits players to one sport in the summer...I can understand that...but if your daughter wants to play then let her play and find a travel coach that allows it.
Do not let a high school coach of one sport bully your kid into concentrating on their sport forsaking the others. Step in as a parent and resolve it. Take it nicely to whatever level you must take it to but "protect what your kid wants to do".
Yes, with your kid playing multiple sports may make her "a jack of all trades and a master of none"...but that is fine as long as she enjoys what she is doing. But again, in most cases as they mature they realize the reality of what they are doing and the goals they have for themselves and the success they want to have at the next level...and it normally takes care of itself. But, it is YOU (the parent) that keeps the road open for you kid to play as many sports as she wants. And, it is you that protects that right against coaches who try to force kids into "their" sport.
Bottom line is... "LET EM PLAY" ! /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
Great post! I agree 100%. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

We got hit hard by a cell at 8:30 this morning. 25 min. downpour that has thrown a big monkey wrench in the plans. Brentwood City parks is working the fields but we might not have a decision until 2:00. So we could be cancelled, delayed or good to go at 4:00. As soon as we have a firm decison I will post it here.

A late night update for those interested.
As of right now we are ready to go on with the tournament with the normal schedule. The fields will be ok as long as we get no or minimal rainfall. Any significant rain will force us to push everything to Sat. Keep your fingers crossed and hope it somehow misses us.

Where is Darkwa going to college?

First off I promise I am not trying to stir anything up but I am just curious. Did he attend Ensworth Middle school (lower school)? What school is he actually zoned for? He is a great athlete and someone will be very lucky to get him at the next level.
