1. First of all I stated it like that because the Cards are just 5 games better than the Braves and the Braves are in a much better division playing with a bunch of rookies due to all the injuries!

    825695883

And the Cardinals have been playing a bunch of bench players too due to injuries to Walker, Edmonds, Molina, and especially Rolen. So don't give me injuries as an excuse.

  2. how in the world does cheerleading get more scholarships then baseball?!?

    825692615

Title IX. It doesn't account for the fact that it's the men's sports that pay for the women's sports...it just requires equal scholarships.

  3. Does anyone else besides me think that priority #1 for Jocketty and the front office before July 31 should be to get a younger outfielder who can take some of the load off Walker, Sanders, and Edmonds this year and then take over either right or left fireld next year?  I love those three, but they ain't spring chickens anymore, and where a major strength has been previously, I see a major exclamation point for trouble this season.

I know it should improve a little once we get Rolen back in the lineup and Mabry can assume duties of filling in giving guys a night off, but I'd still like to have an everyday guy out there to help.

    825691285

Two problems. 1) To get a younger everyday-caliber OF, you're gonna have to pay a lot. Do you want to give up Wainwright and Reyes? It might take both to get the type of player you're talking about.

    2) What do you do with this player when Sanders, Edmonds, and Walker are in the lineup?

As for the Sosa suggestion from Fuggly...bleh, I don't want that idiot associated with the Cardinals organization.

  4. i say go for the money he would prob be in durham a few weeks into the season if he does well, and you can't just turn down that kind of money it's stupid to. he could end his career messing around at the college level; the minors are in place to get young talent players ready for the next level - just my opinion -

    825687979

Um, no, he wouldn't probably be in Durham a few weeks into the season.

Unless you're talking about the 2007 season.

  5. when kyle waldrop was drafted by the twins last year they used his first name to steven i think it was if bryan morris go to motlow next year he will just be renter in the 06 draft

    825687321

He may still get picked before next year's draft...teams can still negotiate with JUCO players until a week before the draft.

  6. I've understood that all college coaches, or athletic departments WILL respond, either by letter or phone call to inquiry letters by athletes interested in playing baseball for their program. I'm trying to gain infomation concerning contacts made, vs non-response issues. (Thanks in advance for any help.)

    825686251

Not ALL reply, but most of the college coaches I know (and that's quite a few) will evaluate pretty much anybody they find out about.

  7. Yeah when a A team does that they make a movie about them.  You are talking about exceptions.  I'm talking about the rule.  By the way, how many teams can stay on the field with those guys?  Be honest, not many.

    825685463

Nobody made a movie out of the teams I'm talking about. The line between 3A and 5A in football is a lot bigger than it is between AA and AAA in basketball.

I'm saying how about you guys drive 5-10 hours, spend the gas, and hotel money for a change.  We are tired of doing it.

    825685463

Um, we were driving 5 hours and spending the gas and hotel money when it was in Chattanooga.

  8. First off, I think the city of Memphis will be glad to give up Spring Fling.  I understand the sports authority down there lost money on the venture.

    825685547

They lost money, yes, but they aren't in business to make money directly. Don't expect us to not put in another strong bid.

  9. Bzzt...wrong. It's 598 miles to Fort Erie, Ontario, which is the closest Canadistani city to Bristol. It's 503 miles from Bristol to Memphis.

    Bzzt...wrong

    From:

    Bristol, TN

    To:

    Cleveland, OH

Driving Distance: 450 miles Driving Time: 8 hours, 11 minutes

Cleveland to canadian border is 30 miles through Lake Erie for a total of

480 Miles about 50 less than Memphis

    825685286

I'm curious how exactly you're planning to drive across Lake Erie.

  10. I also believe that thier should be a blind draw after the Region Tournaments are complete to see which Regions face each other in the Sectional Series .. that way we would have the best 8 teams reguardless of geography...

    825685211

A blind draw in that situation meaning that, say, Dobyns-Bennett would have to go play at Germantown in a sectional? Pass.

And a blind draw doesn't do anything to ensure the best 8 teams making it. If you drew region 2-AAA against region 8-AAA, I guarantee you would have been sending two of the best 8 home the last two years.

  11. You do realize that it is closer to Canada from Bristol, TN than it is to Memphis.

    825685254

Bzzt...wrong. It's 598 miles to Fort Erie, Ontario, which is the closest Canadistani city to Bristol. It's 503 miles from Bristol to Memphis.

I love my state and am proud of our accomplishments.  I just want things to be fair.  Like classifications.  Why is football the only sport with five classifications.  In District 1 AAA Dobyns-Bennett or Science Hill have won the District Championship in Basketball every year since 1990.  Twice Tennessee High, the other city school in the conference, made it to the state.  Baseball, they have won it every year except in 2003 and 2004.  Those two schools have a minimum of 600 more students than any other school in their conference.  How is that fair?  We are all playing for third place.

    825685254

Because football is the sport where number of total players (and therefore school size) matters the most. I've seen 1A basketball teams (or equivalent from other states) that can compete with good AAA basketball teams. It's rare, and I haven't seen one that could hang with a AAA title contender, but I have seen some that can stay with good teams. I haven't seen a A or AA football team that could even dream of staying on the field with Riverdale, Maryville, Melrose, etc.

The TSSAA needs to be consistant with all of their policies and actually listen to the schools AD's and Coaches when they have something to recommend.  The TSSAA should be totally reorganized.  As far as the Spring Fling, they need to understand that about a million people live northeast of Knoxville and we deserve the same consideration as the rest of the state.

I know I'm crying and a little jealous, ok a lot jealous, but the current systems has failed.  It is time for a change.

    825685254

Well, here's the thing...what would help that? If it's in Murfreeboro instead of Memphis, you've got a 5 hour drive instead of 8...still requires hotel, taking off work, and a lot of gas.

I do agree, there's room for improvement in the TSSAA overall, but I don't think you'll find any equivalent state governing body that is really well-liked in that state.

  12. I didnt say A.I. had nothing to do with the recent "coaching carousel", I'm just saying you can't put all the blame on him

    825685250

He's the one constant, and he's more than earned his reputation as a guy who blows off practice...there's no quicker way to run off a coach than to let your star blow off practice repeatedly.

  13. 1 field can play as many games as 4 fields if the games are scheduled correctly. Less travel time more convenient.

Biggest reason is $$$$$$$$. You could play on less fields if they played more games a day. But if they do they couldn't charge for sessions. All broke down to spread out the money.  More locations more money to hosts.

    825685108

The TSSAA is requiring six fields together, even though you're correct, the tournament could be scheduled to work with just four fields.

  14. Interesting.  Maybe those instructions and signals should be taught to HS umpires as well and then some of the problems would never occur; however, it seems strange that what works in regular season can't work in tournaments.  It seemed to work fine in the district and regional games I called.

    825685090

Again, half the state tournament sites have press boxes (and by that, I'm talking about boxes elevated behind at least 20 rows of bleachers)...most high school fields I've seen either don't have press boxes or have press boxes close enough that it's no different.

In bigger venues with bigger crowds, signals have to replace verbalization as the primary communication to your scorer.

And of course, aside from CBHS and Briarcrest, there's no home team in the state tournament, just teams batting first and second. The scorers are provided otherwise.

  15. Opperman, I respect what you do, and like I said the scoreboard is for show.  It doesn't matter to us if its right or wrong until a coach treats it like it's official.  As far as the ego comment is concerned, it's not about what you suggest or recommend we do, it's is what we are taught.  Furthermore, when it comes to the official book, we operate the whole season from the standpoint that the home team has the official book.  If someone from the tournament is keeping the official book, maybe they should be at field level.  I've yet to see a minor or major league umpire signal a sub to the press box, have you?  How do they keep it straight?  I'm simply asking and not trying to be smart, but if we did everything to make everyone's life easier, what kind of focus would we have on the game?  Finally what is the official signal for a sub?  The only thing mentioned is that the umpire-in-chief should announce each substitute, if they are reported that is.

    825684950

In tournament play, the site is responsible for the book, not the team that wins the coin toss.

At a facility like USA Stadium (or Gagliano, or U of M, or almost every site used), the official book is in the press box and is usually kept on computer, and field level is not very good for that.

And I'm glad you brought up pro ball.

I'm one of the scorers for the Memphis Redbirds, and as such, I can assure you that EVERY substitution in major or minor league baseball is announced to the scorer in the press box.

The umpire will wave at the box, then point to the new player, and if it's a defensive sub, he'll indicate whether it's a straight switch or a double switch (umpires have different ways of signaling that, but you can tell when you watch for it). If you're actually at the game, you'll notice the PA announcer doesn't announce the new batter until the plate ump "announces" him. It's basically the same in college ball, though some umps miss a sub occasionally.

Pro teams almost always have numbers on both front and back, and when the umpire points to the new player, you know what you're looking for.

  16. ATTA BOY!!  someone actually knows something about the game within the game...who cares if the pressbox has it right or not, as long as the plate ump and the official book is kept correctly...when the ump is standing out from behind the plate and writing on his lineup cards, he is not wasting time, just doing his job making sure everything is as should be concerning the lineups and recording all pinch/courtesy runners and subs etc.

    825684769

Except that if I'm the official book and you don't signal a sub to me, I may not have him, and therefore the official book doesn't have it right after all.

Geez, don't you love umpires' egos when somebody suggests they could improve their communication skills?

  17. I guess you dont need good timing in the pressbox but on the field it is crucial..we are taught to first see the pitch, call it , and then signal..if you see an umpire jerking his right hand in the air before the pitch hits the mitt, then he stands a very very good chance of calling a few ba-ikes or ste-alls.  Then you and the fans would be all over him for being too quick..too quick is as bad as too slow...I know the plate umpire you are refering too and I happen to appreciate his timing..he does an excellent job both in the field and behind the dish...Maybe you could ask Mr. Dale Ford.(25+ years in the majors) what he thinks of this particular guy...He was very pleased with his work...maybe getting out of the pressbox and behind the dish would change your whole perspective of umpiring if you tried it.You would an even better seat for the game if you do..

    825684756

Maybe you'd understand why the scoreboard was wrong about every five pitches if you tried to keep track from the press box. Or if you tried to broadcast the game from the press box.

I only had trouble with balls and strikes for one umpire in the whole tournament. Maybe I'm not the problem on that.

  18. www.fixedit.com

Probably the best around. New version (shareware) will allow user to upload box scores to a webserver (makes for easy printing).

    All screens are viewable.

All the pay version allows for basically is printing off of pages.

    825684766

FixedIt isn't awful, but it's got a lot of problems IMO, especially in the area of substitutions.

I can't help you as far as good and free. I use The Automated Scorebook, from http://www.statcrew.com. It's probably the best out there if you need to send files around -- almost all colleges and minor league teams use it. But it's $350.

It's definitely the best system to use as a broadcaster if you combine that with the $350 program that does the XML viewing. But of course, that's a LOT of money, so it's not an option for a lot of people.
