  1.

Lets not sour a truely classic game by nitpicking about officiating or other lame excuses as to why one team couldn't pull away from the other.

Now, Kaz . . . If you're referring to my post, I never mentioned anything about the officiating. I was simply pointing out a major statistic in the game. The two teams were nearly even in ever major statistical category (free throw percentage was dead even at 71.4%, field goal shooting was nearly even (31% to 29%), rebounds nearly even (Oliver Springs +3) and turnovers nearly even (Oliver Springs +3). But O.S. outscored Oneida by 10 at the free throw line allowing them to make up a field goal deficit that saw them hit 50% less field goals than Oneida. The free throw line was clearly the difference, wouldn't you agree? That was my point.

BTW, lest it appear that I'm knocking the officiating, fouls were nearly even, too (Oneida +5) :thumb:

  2. Will this game take to much out of the winner? :( Will Greenback or Coalfield be a much fresher team for Thursday game.

I'm sure Coalfield/Greenback will be every bit the dog fight that the second game of the evening will be. :(

Faith+1 once again shows his ignorance Re: the situation of the student section and the benches. I'm sure Oneida would've gladly traded benches and worn the home whites last night. Unfortunately, Cosby saw it differently. That's fine, because not only did it fire up the Oneida players and give them extra incentive to take it to Cosby, but it put the students in a situation where they could actually become a factor, which they obviously did, getting under the skin of several of the players and taking their attention off the court.

Anywho . . . I know I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game. If I were being honest, I'll repeat what I said earlier in the week: I think Oliver Springs wins this one. But I'll gladly admit that I'm an ignorant fool who don't know nothing if Oneida pulls it out. :D

  3. Wednesday's matchups will indeed be a pair of great ones. The Oliver Springs/Oneida matchup should be a lot of fun. If Oneida plays as they played tonight against Cosby, they can put themselves in a position to win. But it'll take a great effort, and a couple of ladies will need to step up and knock down some shots from the perimeter.

I didn't necessarily think that Coalfield/Greenback would be that great of a matchup, but after watching Greenback tonight, I believe it will be. The Lady 'Kees have definitely improved since I saw them last. Oakdale simply didn't have an answer for Greenback's interior defense. Coalfield struggled a little with Harriman. Of course, Harriman deserves credit for a spirited effort, but if the Lady 'Jackets play Wednesday night as they did tonight, Greenback might find itself in Thursday's championship game. I really think, though, that this game belongs to Coalfield. Simply too many weapons. . .

  4. Well nobody asked for my opinion, but here's how I see it shaping up: :thumb:

District 4 could very well pull off a first-round sweep. Greenback is District 3's best shot. That isn't to say that Cosby can't upset Oneida; I just don't think it will happen. I don't think Oliver Springs or Coalfield will be challenged in the first round.

Greenback-Oakdale will be a good matchup. Greenback is clearly the favorite, but don't count out Coach Fred Snow and his ability to get his team prepared. Going up against the likes of Oliver Springs, Coalfield and Oneida night in and night out will have this bunch prepared. If Greenback slips up any, Oakdale will pull off the upset.

Oneida-Cosby will also be a good first-round matchup. I think that, in the end, Oneida will prove too much. But they play these games on the court and not on paper for a reason, I reckon. :thumb:

Assuming that Oneida and Oliver Springs both advance past the first round, one of the best two matchups of the tournament will be Wednesday night between those two. The other of the two best matchups will be Coalfield and the winner of Wednesday's game in the championship game.

I'm hoping that the Lady Indians end Oliver Springs' season on Wednesday night, but if I were picking, I'd have to go with the Lady Bobcats as Region 2-A champions. There are three potential state tournament teams in this tournament, IMHO. It's a shame that (at least) one of them will have their season ended this week.

  5. You Don't Know Me, I might not know you but I do agree with you!

(Sorry, that sounded like something that Kazam character would say ;) )

Seriously, though, Oneida has put a couple of good games together and the first two games they were right there with Coalfield even though they arguably didn't play their best in either game (particularly the second). As if either team needed any added motivation in this rivalry, the opportunity to avoid that automatic elimination game in the first round of the region should be it!!

Looking forward to a great one!

  6. Listen, I am as much a Scott fan as anyone on this board. I graduated from there a Highlander back in the '90s and I remain a Highlander today. But why do you all insist on coming onto Oneida threads and making a rearend out of yourself? The mere fact that Oneida is still alive in the postseason while Scott's season is finished makes your posts here even more ridiculous. It's also silly to be talking about something that happened back in December. Talking about how your freshmen could beat Oakdale is just about as silly as it would be if Bearden or William Blount were on Scott threads talking about how their freshmen could beat Loudon. Classifications are in place for a reason. If they aren't, why has Scott appealed to TSSAA to be moved from Region 2 in football? Now, boys, it isn't as if you're having to come over here to defend yourself, because I haven't seen any Oneida people on any Scott threads talking smack. Stop embarassing Scott County people who hope for the success of both local schools.

  7. Just to be fair....in the boys game, Oneida shot 25 free throws and AC shot 2...so maybe it evens out.....I think I saw Stiltner talk to the refs between games......

Perhaps . . . the difference is that in the boys' game, it didn't impact the outcome of the game. In the girls' game, it very well may have.

  8. youdon'tknowme is right because I was looking at the scorer's table and saw the same thing. Don't blame the Oneida people. Blame the referees.

Perhaps the other two officials (besides the one who made the call) saw them and decided to ignore it to even things up a bit. :thumb: Ladyndnmom has it right: 23 fouls on Oneida as opposed to 11 on Anderson County; 27 free throws for Anderson County as opposed to six for Oneida. That win should have an asterik next to it.

    Just MHO, of course.

  9. Congraulations girls! Scott wins over Catholic.

They have been working hard and getting better all year.

It was the first district win in 7 years.

    Keep it up girls!

A GREAT win last night for the ladies. However, it wasn't their first win in seven years. Their last district win was in 2003.

  10. Last night Oneida beat Greenback by 28 points and it is the first time all season that I have seen them play all 4 quarters. It was a very good team effort and at last the selfishness was not there.

Good luck tonight and follow up last nights great showing with another win.

I thought it was their best game of the season so far. Hopefully it is the sign of things to come. . .

  11. Highlandermom, I'm not going to try to get on here and tell you that you're wrong. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I do disagree with you, though.

First, as others have already pointed out, simply being an upperclassman doesn't guarantee anyone the right to play. There are players who come and go through four years of basketball at the high school level and never start one game. Unless they get into the game for mop-up duties, the only recognition they're going to get at the varsity level is on senior night. Is it fair? Heck no, it ain't fair. But life ain't fair, and - after all - high school is preparation for life. I have heard some argue that we've made too much a business out of high school athletics; that we've put too much importance on winning and losing, and that every level of school-endorsed athletics should be like Jr. Pro basketball, where every player is guaranteed of getting game action in every game. Well, that's a whole 'nuther argument for a whole 'nuther day.

Regardless of all that, I don't have the privilege of attending all the practices at SHS so it wouldn't be for me to say whether he gives the younger players more PT because they're better players or because they are executing better or for an entirely different reason. But I do know this: Scott High School is paying Chad Marcum to do one thing: Develop a successful girls' basketball program. And if you're going to put your trust into a coach to run a basketball program, especially when he actually has to build the program, you're going to have to give him a little time. Halfway through his first season is WAY too soon to start criticizing his coaching methods.

In the meantime, my personal opinion is that Coach Marcum is a very good coach. In the games I have had an opportunity to attend this year, the team is obviously showing improvement. Coach Kries started things in the right direction last year, and now Coach Marcum has picked up where his predecessor left off and has continued moving the program. Every time I walk into the gymnasium at Scott High, I see those banners from district and region championships in the early-to-mid '90s and I'd love to see another banner join the old ones real soon. But it takes time. I don't think anyone thought that Coach Marcum's team would start competing for the district championship overnight. I know that he didn't feel that way. I had an opportunity to speak with him at length about his team shortly before the season started and he said in no uncertain terms that there would be some really difficult moments that his team would have to work through to get to where they wanted to be. One of the problems is that he inherited a team that is really down. That will make the task of returning the team to district championship contention an even longer one.

But it is just astounding to me that I hear as much criticizing at SHS as I already hear. It hasn't gone unnoticed. I was talking to another coach from the area a few days ago and his words were "It's no wonder they can't keep a girls' basketball coach up there at Scott County." And I can't help but wonder: If the critics are this vocal already, after just a few months on the job, what will they be like by this time next year if Scott High doesn't yet have a winning record?

You have a good coach. Don't run him off.

  12. It's amazing how much difference one player can make, ain't it? Last year's trip to Jimtown was so much more enjoyable than the couple of years before that, and I'm afraid much more enjoyable than tonight's trip will be. No one has been able to stop Ms. Brown yet. The opposition can't stop her on the court, and (unfortunately) Tech couldn't stop her from getting away to MTSU.

Hopefully the rest of the team will forget to show up tonight. :o

  13. Tough game. Scott didn't play particularly well, but credit AC for doing a good job defensively to take away what Scott wanted to do offensively.

I hope that the next meeting in Huntsville won't see the Highlanders have the misfortune of drawing Mr. Shay as one of their officials. I have never seen one man make so many blatantly bad calls that favor one team in my life.
